His sense of humor is often overlooked!!!! They really fired off on all 8 cylinders, and you could see it in Mike Campbell's face!!! And she was quite charmed by him!!!
Playing an old classic on live national tv instead of the current single you would expect, is exactly what The Last DJ represented. Yeah, they're still promoting by being there. But it's almost sarcastic and intentional to play a near 40 year old song while they're there. If the show producer really did suggest it, he/she probably gets it and is a fan!
Wow.....if he called me "sugar"....I'd probably pass out....got to love him ....just the whole package .....so talented, witty, funny, and with a sense of what's happening in music and the world. Did I leave out sexy???
Beautiful! Love this song and love the lyrics. Interview was very funny, didn’t realize what a great sense of humor Tom Petty had. It would be nice to hear this song at the Fleetwood Mac concert. Stevie also sings this fabulous song , ‘I Need To Know’🙃😜✌️🦆
You gotta check out tom petty radio on Sirius. He does host some segments (some 350 episodes I think) where he plays cool jams he likes, and full of his deadpan, obscure and silly stoner commentary and jokes. It's like he's still here with us.
Katie was such a cutie. Tom entertained me as a 15 yr old. In 1978. One of the best ever bands of that time period. There were so many then. Unlike today.
My friend brought over some new records. New music. The album had just come out that week. That was when we had djs that played what they liked. It gained done air play and away they went. I had no idea how prolific and enduring they would become. But driving around at 16 with American girl blasting, singing along as loud as possible, well these songs reflect our lives.
Dam, the torpedoes I still cant believe hes gone, seen TP and the H 11 times and would have gone another 11 never be another like him RIP Tom PS for those seeing it the 1st time Tom was one of the coolest, funniest and nicest guys in Rock N Roll or in just plain life, check out Here comes my girl and the interplay with the band hugging winks etc. they loved him
The original 'Drum Loop' laid, 'by me' (James Lewis) for the original recording of this song.. is , in my opinion ... the baddest ass groove of all TP songs... yea , it is... It was 16 bars of me whacking open hi hat and slammin snare drum.. to just the right 'Human Tempo'.. onto two track machine ... ( Drumstick on mic stand..holding tape reel across the room to machine... then transferred to 2 inch tape big machine for 4 minutes.. Then all other tracks laid over, etc...But 'Core Groove' I laid ... set it all up... Real hard to dilute or get away from that 'BAD ASS GROOVE I LAID... Thank you very much !!!
dont know why it still bothers me but some damn fool wrote he was flirting with her. 1. plastic hair and complete ignorance of his music; 2. just married the love of his life Dana. Fans are exactly what that word means; fanatics. Leave the man alone, especially now that he is no longer on this earth; he did more than most to aspire to the sky.
They're on FIRE here, ... but as usual, Network TV turns the volume down too low on Tom's mic/vocals, so the lyrical verses can't be heard quite as easily. I guess they didn't like Tom using the ghastly phrase "dancing naked" during his intro very much.
I don't know why this bothers me, but I think this gig pre-dates his marriage. I was very moved by his bio, and more than ever feel that people's privacy should be honoured. If you love this artist's music; celebrate it as people do, by adapting it to your own life; it's how it gets passed on.
James Lewis whether or not you were the drummer, Steve Ferrone, a fabulous drummer, did not really get the feel correct here. Ferrone always plays square correct beats. Like a Swiss watch. The hit recording was quite a lot different.
Just my opinion, but Tom's voice was a million times better than the "sacred" Mr. Dylan. When Bob sang it was so difficult what words he was singing. Tom Petty's singing gave so much expression to the words.
You are an ass. He was fending off a woman whose hair spray probably needs a carbon footprint. He was making fun of her , get it???? 2002 one year married to Dana Jesus get your gossip right
the hair. the voice. what a talent. i still can't believe he's gone. thanks for your songs. they are my jukebox.
High school ! I wore my hair exactly like it. So did all the other guys
The greatest band I have heard in my life! Hit after Hit!!!!!!!
His sense of humor is often overlooked!!!! They really fired off on all 8 cylinders, and you could see it in Mike Campbell's face!!! And she was quite charmed by him!!!
Yeah for sure, she wanted him...lol
What’s not to love! He is a blast😘
Yeah, he’s takin the piss 😂

Love his sense of humor! Such a great guy! ❤️❤️❤️

Always the best of his generation. Can't touch this.
Haha ... Tom showing who really had the talent. Absolutely love it!
"It's called 'I Need To Know', sugar!" 😂🤣😂🤣
Tom with his ol’ Southern charm. 😂😂😂😂

Always Loved Tom And The The Heart Breakers Since 79 with Don't Do Me Like That!
He was very loved in my household his music has been the soundtrack to my life.

Tom come back!!!!!
That was one of my favorites back in the day! Simple song but powerful !!
I'm just lost...He was so great...
Me too... lost
This is awesome
He was the best ❤
I will always miss him like a spiritual advisor and a sweetheart
I don't know why it bothers me but I don't like that she missed two band member names. They're important, I'm glad Tom corrected her.
Markus Pritsch she actually got it right
She said "Ron Blair on bass...Scott Thurston on guitar...." Markus.

@@JRAFF145 I think Tom P was in a playful mood. Katie had it right, TP was playing around.
Hahah....She got it right....
I miss him being alive on this earth until ressurection John 5:28'29 .
Legends forever
most likely someone had to tell katie who Tom Petty is.
Right...
lKatie Couric certain has to know who Katie Couric is in order for her to interview him.
lol, that is wy he made that weird comment of dancing naked!
Katie Couric has to know who Tom Petty is in order to interview him
I'll bet your right.
That was fun!
This is cool!
"The producer asked us to go into our back catalog..." Probably because they were gonna play 'When Money Became King.'

Nice of you to read a little about the band before the interview Katie "got canned" Couric.
He corrected Katie but she totally nailed the band introductions
I believe I see his wife Dana in the audience
Yes, pretty sure she is over @ front right, inside the fence.

i really miss that guy
Tom , Roy Orbison and George Harrison / the Wilburys in heaven
He was so funny. ❤️
The Last DJ could be his best album.
Killed it.
3:00. Good to go
Thx. My life just got a few minutes longer.
Interesting, they dropped the whole song from E to D, a whole step.
They’d been up all night I guess.
♥️😎👍👣

She said "Ron Blair on bass...Scott Thurston on guitar...." Thomas.
What the fuck is this and how have I not seen it 😂😂😂😂😂
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Start with the third album, 'Damn The Torpedoes!'. Such a great album!
Mike Campbell looks like Beetlejeuse.
it's showtime! 😆

tom was HARD CORE flirting with Katie!!

Tom should quit flirting, Kate told him to lay off on National Television ,,, Lordie
What could a dumb ads like you even know anything about flirting, get something to do low life.
