I bought this car new in 93, a year later sent it to Peter Ferrell in Virginia to be "reworked". End result was 600HP. Not sure what he charges now, but back then it was extremely expensive, hate think what they charge now, if they're still in business. BUT, they did make an incredible insanely fast RX7. I sold it a year later to an Arab, (I lived in PA,he might have been the only Arab i had ever seen in PA) I sold the car with ALL THE WARNINGS needed. He shrugged it off. He totaled the car 3 hours later and then tried to sue me in court claiming he didn't realize the car had been heavily modified. Thankfully I'm the type of guy that insisted on him signing off on the notice he was purchasing a legit racecar and not a stock RX-7. Anywho, we got to court, his attorney made the most ridiculous claims, in the end they wanted me to reimburse him for the totaled car, and pay for his extensive hospital stay and medical bills (apparently the tree he hit while airborne nearly killed him)....i didn't have an attorney, but I did have photos and the signed paperwork stating he was aware of what he was buying. The judge looked at the photos of the car and engine bay and immediately threw the case out. Pretty much stating it was ludicrous to assume the man did not have knowledge of what he bought simply based on the photos of the engine alone. I miss that car, although it was bright ass yellow. I'll never forget sitting at a redlight right after i got it back from Peter, light turned green, I let out the clutch and within a split second was facing the wrong way in the middle of the intersection. Butthole puckered, aint gonna lie. I should have kept it, i'll never have another car like that. RIP RX-7 You're not forgotten.
Thomas yates When I had my stock RX8 you could literally drop the clutch and it would drift itself. I can't imagine that many horses pumping through and NOT puckering my butthole.
I honestly want one just so that I can keep it stock. Bring a 100% original 90's FD to a car meet. It'll probably be the most awed thing there, even over the 800hp GTR in middle of the parking lot.

Dirceu Corsetti Well no. Mine is a GSL-SE and my girl was more of a classic, chill girl rather then a Goth girl. She loved old stuff and had an old jazz vinyl collection, and she loved my GSL.
Valentin Filipov the car, not the girl. It's a GSL, not a FD and every so often something small goes wrong and I have to fix it properly. The funny thing is with the stock twins it's not gutless at all. You have full boost by 2500rpm and with the 4:10 gearing outside of 5th you are going to move briskly.
Once you accept the triangles into your heart it's a commitment for life. People tell you you're stupid and say your engine is one road trip from blowing an apex seal but we don't care. We drive rotaries because there is something about revving out a rotary that you just don't get from a piston car. yeah you can drop an ls engine in it and make more power and be more reliable but nothing is more satisfying than beating the hell out of a rotary!
I had two Hondas that had their timing belts snap and destroy the upper half of the engine. The engines were removed and cleaned, then put back together and placed back in the cars. I didn't do the work and the cars were driven normally, not raced. Rotary engines only have like 14 moving parts, and replacing the apex seals, side seals, and springs isn't really hard. You just have to remove the engine to do it. I have 87k miles on my RX8 and compression is still good. I had another RX8 that had the same amount of miles when I had to sell it, and it's seals were good. I had worse luck with my Hondas and their timing belts, which sucked because they failed at 20k miles or so.

All jokes aside, you are an incredibly talented writer and an equally proficient orator. Congratulations on being the only channel I actually check for new content.
I can understand why people do it, as I love the LS engines and how easily they make power, but I wouldn't want to ruin the handling balance of the car. That being said, the aluminum block LS engines are around 450-550lbs, so it's not too crazy.
This channel turns the ideals and emotions placed behind cars and their following and turns it into a dynamic experience. Every single episode, I feel encompassed by new points of view and compelled to experience all these vehicles, regardless of quality of rating. Cars can act as time machines, not just demonstrating the technology available at their period of production but also the social and economic attitude of the time. Many praises out to Mr. R and THE Roman, another week, another entertaining masterpiece.
Just buy a trashvette c5 for half the price and be on your merry way, the people who swap the rx's just want straightline speed and thats what the vette is good at it.
+Mikael K "Making 300 horsepower to the crank, which is 59 more than it was rated for which was 261." It's impossible to argue that he didn't just say 300 is 59 more than 261.
I found as soon as you replace your exhaust/downpipe with a mandrel bent stainless unit and go high flow catylitic converter it cools the engine down ALOT
I think this is one of the best reviews of the RX7 I've ever heard. It seems like the point of this car is simply missed by many people and the only thing it has going for it is the high RPM limit... Which isn't even that big a deal in today's world but you have exposed that it is so much more than that and I hope other people start to see this too. Not to get everyone on board with it but just to accept it.
hershtian vxv I would not recommend that at all I have a friend who did that and it was bad you'd be better getting something like a 944 or 924 porsche about the same price too or a decent ls powered camaro it would be a lot more budget friendly and a lot faster too
The way you combine a delicious gonzo presentation style with a truly interesting and informative technical/historical/cultural analysis of these machines is in my opinion genius. I love your reviews.
The FD is one of my favourite cars of all time (thanks, Initial D), but I don't think I'd ever be able to bring myself to own one. The reason is I knew a guy who owned one and his ownership story is just a lot of maintenance. The car is rather reliable for everyday use, he never raced it, but like all 20 y/o enthusiasts he drove it hard. He drove it hard to school, he drove it hard for milk, he drove it hard back. And it's constant maintenance, cause if you don't maintain it, the car doesn't drive hard anymore. Not by the driver's standards anyway.
I do all those things with this car, drive to get groceries, to get gas, to the mall, to get gas again, and also during Autocross events. So far it's held up pretty well, although I think my diff bearings are on their way out. But that's a pretty normal thing for a higher mileage car regardless of rotary. If you take good care of them (like most things) you should expect average to modest maintenance. Driving a rotary "hard" (I.e. Revving it high frequently) is actually good for the overall health of the seals, whereas always putting around town can be more harmful overall. 👍
Mark Lee There's nothing wrong with owning an FD. They can be quite reliable. A friend of mine had a bridge port FD that was boosting 1.5 bar on a T04 60-1 for four years. The only reason that car stopped running was because a freeze plug rusted out. The only problem is that they're not idiot proof like a lot of popular cars are.
koopatroopa187 Problem with japanese cars is they spoil us in that sense. Provided you don't slam it, a Civic will run forever and a half. Rotaries introduce a lot of compromise to the equation, hence why I think it didn't really catch on. I think it'd add an interesting touch to Back to the Future though, if DeLorean came through with the idea of a rotary in the DMC-12.
The intro is nothing short of amazing. I'm probably going to keep it burrowed at the back of my mind for the rest of my life just for it to suddenly pop up in my head at the worst possible time.
Regular Cars just became my favorite RUclips channel with one video. Hahaha I've been debating on buying an FD RX7 and then I found this video. Amazing.
for thoes who have yet to become aware of why people like the rx7 here's a run down. -incredibly light for the power output. -very small rotating mass means you can have a very light clutch and the gears just slide into place. -you can... no, you must rev the s*** out of that thing because a rotary has very little power in the low end and it has twin turbo. -red line at 8k rpm means it screams. -even stock it rides like a well tuned sports car set up as a daily driver. and yes it is unreliable, fuel hungry and honestly not very fast(compared to a v8 in a rx7). but if you brought a rx7 because you want practical you have the wrong reasons. the rx7 is all about pure driving pleasure.
I love these. I think they are so beautiful too. The technology seems super fun too, but I'm just not sure I want to take on the responsibility for rotary engine care. Even if I never own one, I will always appreciate them.
If you have the money to buy an RX7 you have enough money to buy and maintain an RX8. Or you can get the 7 anyway, it will be slightly more reliable, more baddass, and probably bankrupt you.
Robert Rowley "yeah, but it really wasn't that iconic." So, winning numerous awards including C&D's car of the year every single model year it's been in the U.S, numerous racing victories with the IMSA GTO 300ZX keeping an unbroken bonneville salt flats speed record and being probably the best selling 90s japanese car "wasn't that iconic"? You really wanna try revising history because F&F culture is blowing up a car with not nearly as much allocades? Really buddy?
I like rotaries for an infinite amount of reasons. But the main one is that they can take any beating. I don't think any piston engine can survive at 9k+ rpms all day at the track. Just take care of it and it'll do whatever you want it to.
@@sieravirs1107 most aren't designed for that high of RPMs, but that wasn't the statement made, the statement was any piston engine. Next off the Honda S2000 engine can hit 9k and that is a street car... so his statement is still invalid
@@sieravirs1107 and most rotary engines don't crank out high RPMs on the street either if you just drive it. Yes rotary engines rev very high, but they are a proven failure of a engine overall.... and I like them a lot, but the engine is not worth it in my book.
I hid it (barely drove it) for two years at one point when I was finishing up school... It hurt me inside. This car is meant to drive, otherwise it's resting inside, Covered 👍
Deniz Pamukcu You bet. Sweet wheels. I looked them up and noticed they cost a grip though. LOL! Now I'm debating selling my 2000 Gibson 1960 Reissue Sun burst Les Paul so I can pursue some of those. Eh, it's not like I play guitar anyways. And I still have my Strat if I wanted to. Well thanks.
I love the FD RX7. The design is so... simple yet smooth. I think its one of the best examples of 90s car styling. On another note. It looks like a big brother to the NA miata. Which is sweet.
I know this comment is 8 years old... If it wasn't for the pop lights, I would say much closer to NB. All the body shapes are there, especially with the hardtop on, just more subtle. It may be copium though, because I have an NB.
Just recently bought a Yellow RX7 FC S4 with 132,000km original engine and apex seal. Everything is stock beside downpipe, dual exhaust and bodykits. Daily it with no problem. Turning heads everywhere she goes :)
The brake booster bracing isn't exclusive to just rx-7s. I've done it on an 05 mustang, and it really helps to firm up the brake and clutch feel, especially under hard driving

R and THE Roman, another week, another entertaining masterpiece.
anyone that puts a v8 in ANY rx7 should be shunned for life
I don't think so. I've seen many of those and when you think about it, it makes sense :D
Just buy a trashvette c5 for half the price and be on your merry way, the people who swap the rx's just want straightline speed and thats what the vette is good at it.
So, for straightline they can buy Shitrolet Vette. RX-7 is for pure driving.
Biturbo cancer :V why y'all shitting on the vette?
But the FD is smaller. owo
I love the gonzo journalism style. I love your writing/commentary just as much as I do the cars. Thanks man.
I hear Wankel and my mind goes 'HITLERHITLERHITLERHITLER!!!!!!'
Nelson Marsh felix wankel was actually kicked out of THE PARTY for being to crazy.
Regular logic: 261+59=300
Referring to the whp, not bhp.
There's a difference.
+Mikael K "Making 300 horsepower to the crank, which is 59 more than it was rated for which was 261." It's impossible to argue that he didn't just say 300 is 59 more than 261.
+no1ymfan1 who cares

He's an English major, remember.

R-ROTARY? *MASAKA!*
I miss my RX-7. 😔
what happened to it?
+Farid Nicolas Wakim I got old and needed a "real" car that didn't break down every month. 😔
me too!! i had a fully rebuilt fc drift street car. totally regret selling it!!
so much fun to drive!
i sold mine for the same reason.. but the irony is all my other cars are less reliable than my fc, go figure
At Least you had the opportunity to have one. :)
For me driving one would be a dream.
That goth girl reference is fucking hilarious. . . and correct.
+1 interwebs sir
We all are secretly clawing about for that goth girl now after this video
I found as soon as you replace your exhaust/downpipe with a mandrel bent stainless unit and go high flow catylitic converter it cools the engine down ALOT
One of the COOLEST cars ever made!
God damn, that goth girl/blonde cheerleader comparison. Primo.
It's STILL achingly sexy
It's the Yamaha Banshee of the car world.
Or the kawi 750 triple.
Oh it sounds like a WAILING BANSHEE but that shit gets my dick T H R O B B I N G
It really is
Nope, its the Yamaha R1 of the car world. Even sounds like one in the power band
Omg I lost it at the intro. at work I seriously tell everyone about these engines........ sigh
what self respecting rotary owner doesnt?
clayton8or_2 Rotary owners have self respect?
@@Robert-jv4hf laughs in @hertlife
Are you telling us anyways?
0:56 "it dont matter if you win by an inch or a mile, winning is winning!" Lol
I think this is one of the best reviews of the RX7 I've ever heard. It seems like the point of this car is simply missed by many people and the only thing it has going for it is the high RPM limit... Which isn't even that big a deal in today's world but you have exposed that it is so much more than that and I hope other people start to see this too. Not to get everyone on board with it but just to accept it.
I hope you get to review an FC3S RX-7.
ls7orBust fc is gonna be the first car I'm gonna get
hershtian vxv I would not recommend that at all I have a friend who did that and it was bad you'd be better getting something like a 944 or 924 porsche about the same price too or a decent ls powered camaro it would be a lot more budget friendly and a lot faster too
Ya I prefer the fc over the fd
ls7orBust FC3S Squad
Initial *DEMEROL* made me love FC's
The way you combine a delicious gonzo presentation style with a truly interesting and informative technical/historical/cultural analysis of these machines is in my opinion genius. I love your reviews.
Just noticed in the beginning, "reviews" is spelled wrong
Btw great video
WEEABOO!
WEEABOO WEEABOO WEEABOO WEEABOO!!!!!!!!
BUT YOU LIKE THIS CAR. Because it's better than an 86
+eXTCy BECAUSE 13B
BECAUSE TRIANGLES
BECAUSE BRAP
WTF IS A WEABO?
a weeaboo is a rude term for nonjapanese individuals who have an obsession with japanese culture
and that was a reference to his review of the AE86. The FD is a car in the anime he talked about in the AE86 review.
+crooklynsince1983 Weaboos are people who obsess over Japan while knowing nothing about it.
wow dude you sound just like the video man haha!!! :))) thats so cool youre so cool and funny
I think this might be one of my favourite RCR videos. Great stuff.
We need to get you behind the wheel of the FC and FB/SA RX-7's.
This is your best review. I come to back to it every now and again.
Mark Lee I feel like you have to enjoy doing that kind of stuff to own one of these cars.
Mark Lee Huh, Initial D made me hate RX-7's for a bit.
I think it'd add an interesting touch to Back to the Future though, if DeLorean came through with the idea of a rotary in the DMC-12.
before watching this i legitimately thought this would be a regular review. i subscribed 5 minutes in.
The intro is nothing short of amazing. I'm probably going to keep it burrowed at the back of my mind for the rest of my life just for it to suddenly pop up in my head at the worst possible time.
Regular Cars just became my favorite RUclips channel with one video. Hahaha
I've been debating on buying an FD RX7 and then I found this video. Amazing.
its 4 in the morning and im fucking wasted lets do this

***** seems interesting will watch later
Please do, it's worth being watched ;)
for thoes who have yet to become aware of why people like the rx7 here's a run down.
-incredibly light for the power output.
-very small rotating mass means you can have a very light clutch and the gears just slide into place.
-you can... no, you must rev the s*** out of that thing because a rotary has very little power in the low end and it has twin turbo.
-red line at 8k rpm means it screams.
-even stock it rides like a well tuned sports car set up as a daily driver.
and yes it is unreliable, fuel hungry and honestly not very fast(compared to a v8 in a rx7). but if you brought a rx7 because you want practical you have the wrong reasons. the rx7 is all about pure driving pleasure.
the analogy about the goth girl at the end of the video was pure gold
I find @RegularCars to be an excellent source for reputable in-depth reviews I can trust
I love these. I think they are so beautiful too. The technology seems super fun too, but I'm just not sure I want to take on the responsibility for rotary engine care. Even if I never own one, I will always appreciate them.
When you mute the video as fast as you can so your flatmates don't think your watching porn
i had to do that lol
I had to do that because my dad
i get what he means, i daily drive a 79 f150. and am currently running fedora and have a blackberry. my life is a daily challenge
your life sucks lmao
Great
Man I want an RX but I don't think I can deal with all the 'life support' :(
put a mazdaspeed 3 engine in.
If you have the money to buy an RX7 you have enough money to buy and maintain an RX8.
Or you can get the 7 anyway, it will be slightly more reliable, more baddass, and probably bankrupt you.
@Covert Cam nope, I'll slide into it like I slide into your girls DM's (just joking around)
just get a non-turbo model. How fast do you need to go in a school zone?
RR I’ve not seen a school zone on a track day yet 🤔
we need a T-shirt that says: "dick with cheese + flexing your biceps on the road = *picture RX-7*"
Only 1 iconic 90's JDM car left...the SUPRA
Robert Rowley Err, no. You forgot the Z32 300ZX.
Ventus Aerius yeah, but it really wasn't that iconic. If you want to include the z32, you have to include the 3000gt.
Robert Rowley NEEESSSAAANN SKYRINE!!!!
Mr.Knister NOT SOLD HERE. IT'S IMPOSSIBRRRRUUU!!!!
Robert Rowley "yeah, but it really wasn't that iconic."
So, winning numerous awards including C&D's car of the year every single model year it's been in the U.S, numerous racing victories with the IMSA GTO 300ZX keeping an unbroken bonneville salt flats speed record and being probably the best selling 90s japanese car "wasn't that iconic"? You really wanna try revising history because F&F culture is blowing up a car with not nearly as much allocades? Really buddy?
Younr words are beautiful man it's even rewatchable, U made a good show with your hands. And I get the witness. Awesome!
love the commentaries! i like how ur on point with the year 93 lol... and 2015..
I like rotaries for an infinite amount of reasons. But the main one is that they can take any beating. I don't think any piston engine can survive at 9k+ rpms all day at the track. Just take care of it and it'll do whatever you want it to.
NASCAR race engines run at 7500 - 10,000 RPMs all day between practice and the actual race...
@@jameswest4853 and what about street cars?
@@sieravirs1107 most aren't designed for that high of RPMs, but that wasn't the statement made, the statement was any piston engine. Next off the Honda S2000 engine can hit 9k and that is a street car... so his statement is still invalid
@@jameswest4853 but it can't be reliable if driven 8-9k RPM most of the time
@@sieravirs1107 and most rotary engines don't crank out high RPMs on the street either if you just drive it. Yes rotary engines rev very high, but they are a proven failure of a engine overall.... and I like them a lot, but the engine is not worth it in my book.
Mmm yeah listen to that kit lens manually zooming
Also that FD is dead fucking sexy, I'm surprised you could find one that clean in the PA area.
Sean C I knew u were familiar from somewhere e.e
Eurobeat mixes! lol
I hid it (barely drove it) for two years at one point when I was finishing up school... It hurt me inside. This car is meant to drive, otherwise it's resting inside, Covered 👍
Deniz Pamukcu Very nice ride man! What kind of wheels are those?
Thanks! Wheels are Desmond Regamasters - Marquis Promada forged in Russia originally.
Favorite video so far, this is why i subscribed. Thank you Mr Regular
anyone come here after the LS swap quickie to see proper rotary appreciation?
like and fav before watching.. FD ftw
Sick build props for doing it right and keeping it classy
Dude I love your channel you seem to master the linguistic flow of satire severity...
was this film in Bethlehem PA? those steel stacks look familiar
+Andrew Cordero yep
+Andrew Cordero Wasn't there were they shot the opening for Transfromers 2?
+RegularCars I'm in Montgomery County, and I got a 05 Ford Ranger fx4 lv2. if you're interested in reviewing it
+joshstylegaming As a matter of fact it is. I got lucky and was on set as it was being filmed.
Andrew Cordero lived in Reading for a bit. Thought the background looked a bit familiar too.
The goth girl analogy is perfect!!!
this is a beautiful video still to this day
I watched the first 30 seconds of this video and immediately hit that subscribe button. Love this channel!
0:55 vaporwave as fuck
Also, putting an LS in one of these is like painting over a Rembrandt with dime store watercolors.
Just recently bought a Yellow RX7 FC S4 with 132,000km original engine and apex seal. Everything is stock beside downpipe, dual exhaust and bodykits. Daily it with no problem. Turning heads everywhere she goes :)
+MrMeoow91 Sounds nice :)
In my opinion, the FC looks and is the best
+landon womack also less complex and possibly more reliable ;)
+MrMeoow91 what more do you need?!
Dude you gotta get those apexes changed if you want it to last. They're high stress little shits it won't leak, it'll blow.
“Dehhh, this is a Mazda RX-7 FD. Twin rotor. TWIN TURBO” best line ever I’m so fucking dead
The brake booster bracing isn't exclusive to just rx-7s. I've done it on an 05 mustang, and it really helps to firm up the brake and clutch feel, especially under hard driving
When does 'Ima tell ya anyway" come out on wax ? I'm serious
best comparisons. Running linux on all your computers with no back up os. I died. LLOL
And when you said a cult following that doesnt seek approval. That made it! (I use to own a FC)
+Kevin Duong As an FD owner and Linux user, whose backup OS is a Live LinuxUSB, I can confirm. Haven't invented a latex allergy yet though.
One of the most beautiful cars ever designed in my humble opinion!
Yes
This man and his analogies. I thought the BF falcon analogy was good. But this, this is marvelous.
