Nissan S13: The Japanese Fox Body. Today, you get a double-review. Here are two S13's from 1989. One is a USDM and the other is JDM. My cock is still on dial-up.

Actually, these s13 Silvias came out in May of 1988 (they were 1988 model year), with the Oldsmobile Cutlass Convertible Indy Pace Car edition (the only ones with heads-up-display) being made available to dealers only after the day of the Indy 500, which was May 29, 1988. There were only 50 of them made, and they were only offered to 50 particular dealerships, and, strangely enough, GM bought most of them back and destroyed them for some reason. So technically Oldsmobile wasn't the first.
VirusTornado I really, really, REALLY hope Mr. Regular knows who Phil Ken Sebben from Harvey Birdman is. I assume so from his other references in the past.
Primer2tone Garage Yea, the 12 valve from the Nissan pickup, but the 240SX version had a bit more HP. They put the KA24DE in the Frontier, though. I had a 1997 Nissan hardbody pickup and it definitely could have used the extra torque and HP of the dual cam. The 3.0 V6 wasn't much better though and even the VG33 that went into the Frontier was a bit wheezy.
So, Japan got the Silvia and the 180sx, and we got the 240sx, which looks like a Silvia with a 180sx front, except the fastback looked like a 180sx all around. And then everywhere else the 180sx was the 200sx except the 2 generations after were the S14 and S15 Silvias, but in the US the 200sx was a completely different car. Why did they have to make this so confusing.
And to throw more spanners in the works, sometimes the car names didn't even relate to the fucking engines!!! For example: The UKDM Nissan 200sx S13 actually has the CA18 (1.8) so it should be called the 180sx; but no, they decided to just randomly call it the 200sx for no fucking reason. Same goes for the JDM 180sx Type-S, it has an SR20!! So it should be called a 200sx Type-S inst.... You know what fuck this.
@@thenutbucket5971 Exactly. And it has a name, actually. "Onevia". It has started from Japan, when owners of the jdm Silvia were drifting and crashing or not, so they would buy and install the front end of a 180 to the body of a Silvia. So 180 (One-Eighty) + Silvia = Onevia. It was so popular as a modification in Japan that it had its own calture. In North America though, the Onevia was sold as the 240sx s13 Silvia. It was even featured in Initial D.

Eh, I like giving cars a bit of a personal touch. I would keep most of it stock, Change the wheels maybe, lower it a little bit. If it ever has engine problems then swap it out. Once I save up enough money I'm going to try to import an NA from Japan (because why the fuck not?) and the only thing I'd change is the rims, and maybe lower it a bit unless the engine blew or had a shit ton of miles, then swap it out for a 1.8 or 13b. Yeah, slammed/hellaflush/jdm bro cars are nice and all but I really prefer clean, simple stuff.
This review takes me back 17 years when I had a 92 S13 fastback base (lightest one with roll up windows, no cruise, etc). It was all stock but very fun to drive. The 5 speed manual felt like it was from a $50K car. Nissan did go way cheap on the interior. The fabric on the seats was like sandpaper and they were very poorly designed/uncomfortable. In those days the drift fad had not yet hit the US so S13s were still around in good condition and for little money. I paid $4500 for mine, 1 female owner before me, 9/10 condition of the car with everything except the stock and working except the radio, with 75K miles in 1998. These days they are butchered so badly in most cases. I always wanted to buy the newer "Kouki" 97/98 car but prices are ridiculous for such an old 4 cyl car. They fetch $8-10K if all stock, in 8/10 condition, with over 150K miles.
I haven't seen anyone talk about this, so I just wanted to mention how much I love the outro song. I love how the particular excerpt fits the ending note of the review, and I'm glad the full song is available on your album. It's beautiful.
Im a subaru guy, and i think this is your best video. Not only because if you're a bad influence you drive a wrx or an s chassis, but because the 240 is finally, and rightly, identified as the grandfather. This car is old. Given i would have liked you to mention how not too long before this model it split chassis and branding with the Z cars. But im just typing a small review. 10/10
It really isn't, although I can see where you come to that conclusion. Every day, people with raped compacts drive by my house. There's a house right by me with a new Supra, R35, RX7 FD, S2000, BRZ, MR2 Spyder, and a seventh-gen Civic hatch crowding the street. As far as I know, the only unmolested cars are those first three, but who knows what that poor Mazda's been through. It just looks stock is all. And God almighty, do I wonder what the hell that owner does for a living.
can't go wrong with a light turbo rwd car with massive after market support. it does suck that it's harder and harder to find clean examples but it makes seeing a clean Silvia more special. They're just badass cars too. glad Australia has plenty of them, all with CA or SR motors.
With all of the Top Gear issues and that all coming to a halt, I'm so glad to have found this channel. You guys are fantastic, and I'm always looking forward to Monday mornings now. I learn something new from just about every video, and it's got the perfect amount of fart jokes and humor to go with it. --Vote for Neal-- --------2016--------
It took a while to get around to these, but this might be the best RCR episode ever. Not as metaphor-laden as some nor as quirky as others, but sometimes the straight-up exposition on a car and its place in our culture is enough, as it is here. Very, very well done.
Hey man I'm a 2020 graduate 22 years old I live in Oklahoma I can remember ever since I came across the 1989 Nissan s13 Silvia I fell in love with it no other car on this planet could top that now I'm going to try and do whatever it takes to get me one of these things bone stock two-tone gray nothing in this world will make me happier maybe like a family with kids or something but that's all I want out of life is just some car.
Answer me it's not just some car it'd be me completing a lifelong goal and using my wipers trying to turn but dude your channel is so f****** cool I think you're the best car reviewer for this the way you insert jokes fam you know the culture
could you imagine; every 240sx you see has a full interior, no zip ties, the body is a uniform color because panels havent been replaced after drift oopsies, and the best part, no drift tax! in the words of louis armstrong: what a wonderful world it would be!
Did America get both the 180SX and S13 body styles with the 180SX front end on both? Because neither of these cars is using the 180SX body (the purple one is using the Silvia body).
I lived in Sasebo Japan for 14 years. I owned the JDM Silvia. same color, except previous owner installed the RB20 inline 6 cylinder. Probably the most fun driven car I have ever driven. no I live in Seattle and daily drive a 2010 Mazdaspeed 3. fun- but not the fun rwd drive in those Japanese mountains on a cool summer night... ahhh memories.
@@josephandreuccetti8043 they're great cars, and an even better platform. You're just missing the point. There's literally nothing the S13 does that the FRS can't. Lol
1989 Nissan 240SX, the official car of: wearing obey snap backs and tank top shirts, being roughly 22-26 years old and spending over a grand on suspension before you fix the body and paint. "Because camber is best suspension" -S13 owner
So accurate on the suspension part for me! Got fortune auto 500, and a dent on the fender of my s13 but don't care because the dent is physical and the suspension is mechanical
RegularCars -I find it interesting that you drove a 'Onevia' (Silvia with a 180SX/240SX hatch) front end on a Silvia coupe) S13. It should be mentioned that in Japan, the middle and late (chuuki and kouki) 180SX came with the SR20DET. In the first year of the 180SX, it came with the same CA18DET as the PS13 (coupe) Silvia. The RPS13 (180SX hatch, e.g, the 180SX Type X, etc) came with the SR20DET as well, but -WAS NOT- renamed to '200SX' (which is a whole nother bag of deeznuts). Another interesting thing is that for both the S13 and later S14, there's lots of parts compatibility with the R32 and R33 skyline GT-R (so you see a lot of 'OEM upgrades'). Like you said, platform, platform, platform. Also it's not so surprising that these older cars have very low miles, as your importer friend will probably tell you. It costs a lot to run a car in Japan, and people definitely do not drive as much given the local infrastructure. The car culture--and commuting culture--is pretty different. In a lot of places, you just don't need a car. Oh, and I enjoyed the engine code talk; Toyota's engine codes (type, chassis family, then features) is also really easy to understand. I don't get why US automakers don't do this.
The "DE" was not an up-trim engine. 1989 and 1990 240sx's ALL had KA24E's, none had a DE (there may be some end of model year overlap but I've never seen one in my life.) The engine was a stopgap yanked from the hardbody pickup. In 1991 and through 1998, every single USDM 240sx had a basically identical KA24DE. The KA series engine is very underappreciated. It takes mods like crazy and despite people's complaints that we never got a turbo motor, it's got tons of personality. I knew a guy with a ka24DE that had about 220 horsepower to the wheels without boost and it was a screamer. I've seen 500HP reliable daily driven KA24E's. They're absolutely indestructible engines. My first 240sx, a KA24E 1990, drank a quart of oil a week and never broke down. My second one, a 1991 DE, had 250k miles and ran like a watch. My third one has an SR20 stroked to 2.35 and made 557 to the wheels until I punched a hole in the #3 piston 15 years ago. I still have the car and promised my mother I'd only sell it if I didn't get into med school on my second try. But until that day comes, I will continue to open my garage door and have people walk up and offer me 10k for the rolling chassis.
The s13 will always be my favorite car. I used to have an 89 coupe in two tone green with the HUD. Best car I've ever owned or will own. I never raced, drifted or modified. It was just a fun daily driver that got me to school. Ever since it died and I was left having to sell it I've compared every car I've tried to buy to it and come away disappointed. I can't stand the way these cars are treated nowadays. I've been looking for over 2 years for one and half are destroyed drift missle/projects and the other half were totally neglected. The abuse these cars have received even from non enthusiasts is just insane. From 1989-1998 we only received 251,410 of them s14 included. Of that number only 191,658 are s13s. That's not a lot! Those numbers are from a quick google search and may be wrong, but still! These cars need to be saved. Prices for even the junkiest of these cars are going up and up. I agree with Mr. Regular wholeheartedly....please move onto the FRS....please...before the majority of these cars are all gone.
Please roman and mr regular do a documentary on the fall of NASCAR and the growing interest of drifting. This perfect metaphor for the change of thinking in american motor sports from gladiatorial combate of speed vs the more artful style of drifting.
I always wanted to do a CA18DET swap into my 91 240 but never got a chance to. With slight tuning it becomes incredibly fun and the revs, ahhhh the revs.
To everyone complaining about the modded 240, it's his car. He paid for it, he can do what he wants, and its such an easy car to personalize, who cares? If u feel he's ruining a rare car that should be kept stock, go buy one urself and keep it bone stock. Let people do what they want, id keep mine bone stock personally but there's no problem modding ur car if you paid for it.

And God almighty, do I wonder what the hell that owner does for a living.
the japanese foxbody. So true.
can't go wrong with a light turbo rwd car with massive after market support.
it does suck that it's harder and harder to find clean examples but it makes seeing a clean Silvia more special. They're just badass cars too. glad Australia has plenty of them, all with CA or SR motors.
Just finished my first SR swap and I remember watching this when it first came out. Love y'all!❤️
both cars are amazing
MrOTBxTrains and the dash on the silvia is a dream
MrOTBxTrains Shame about that stupid ass stance though.
Antspray1 i think it looks good
Cool you like a mod that makes the car worse in everything but shitty looks.
Antspray1 chill out
With all of the Top Gear issues and that all coming to a halt, I'm so glad to have found this channel. You guys are fantastic, and I'm always looking forward to Monday mornings now. I learn something new from just about every video, and it's got the perfect amount of fart jokes and humor to go with it.

Kormákur Jónsson Yes let's use the imperial system in a world where everyone else uses metric
+alexlam24 Yeah I use the metric system but the engines are called that.
It took a while to get around to these, but this might be the best RCR episode ever. Not as metaphor-laden as some nor as quirky as others, but sometimes the straight-up exposition on a car and its place in our culture is enough, as it is here.
Very, very well done.
oh god I love the Silvia. Especially in that weirdo green color it came in. YAWZA!
ModernDinosaur
Yeaaah that mint green with the chocolate underbody. I must own a dozen of those in various Gran Turismos.
I love those actually and the exact color is lime green two tone, *everyone looks at him for liking the s13 in that color* don’t look at me like that.
this is in my top three regular car views for sure
"Turbo from an S15"
So the pulled the turbo from a GMC Syclone?
Hey man I'm a 2020 graduate 22 years old I live in Oklahoma I can remember ever since I came across the 1989 Nissan s13 Silvia I fell in love with it no other car on this planet could top that now I'm going to try and do whatever it takes to get me one of these things bone stock two-tone gray nothing in this world will make me happier maybe like a family with kids or something but that's all I want out of life is just some car.
Answer me it's not just some car it'd be me completing a lifelong goal and using my wipers trying to turn but dude your channel is so f****** cool I think you're the best car reviewer for this the way you insert jokes fam you know the culture
road trip game with your buddy:
whenever you hit the the Wipers instead of the indicators you have to swap seats ^_^
+OmnipotPrime YES
i love this channel. and its even weirder when i look at everything and see my highway and my longs park. its so strange but i love it :D
If Gaston owned a car, it would be this 240SX.
This is quite possibly the GREATEST review you've ever done.
My first car was an S13. I've still got it. I'm building an S14 on my Channel. Soon to start working on my S13 hatch.
I had no idea these cars were out there. Thank you for broadening my knowledge of cars one video at a time!
the fact that they changed the headlights has always fucked me up with identifying them
The USDM 240sx S13 is basically just the 180sx
+Braden Spencer it's not a hatch tho
In this vid, the USDM pretty much a coupe with the front end from a hatchback.
SideWaysiscool Yeah, I noticed but it's not a 180sx
frank jones My comment was more just to correct Braden and clarify a bit lol
could you imagine; every 240sx you see has a full interior, no zip ties, the body is a uniform color because panels havent been replaced after drift oopsies, and the best part, no drift tax! in the words of louis armstrong: what a wonderful world it would be!
oh i also forgot. a engine that hasnt been bounced off the limiter by a wannabe keiichi tsuchiya
POSITIVE RACISM!!! Hahaha
I scoffed about Dan's paint color choice from the POV drive, seeing it now, it came out really really nice. You shut me up my friend lol
I swear these were made to be watched high
waited so long for this video. Definitely not disappointed :)
Speaking of Foxbodies, REVIEW ONE, PUH-LEEZE!
I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact the USDM car has the pop-up light 180SX front end conversion.
Thats actually how the USDM models came.
Did America get both the 180SX and S13 body styles with the 180SX front end on both?
Because neither of these cars is using the 180SX body (the purple one is using the Silvia body).
They got 180sx body with 180sx front and also silvia body with 180sx front. AFAIK there were no silvia front cars in the US
Kyoto-Moto wtf are you talking about 180sx and s13 are the same thing, usdm cars only came with popups if thats what your wondering
Kyoto-Moto yep
All those good mods but then excessive camber and stretched tires. :(
justfakeit888 two things that are very easy to change!
That USDM S13 looks like a riced Miata while the JDM S13 looks like pure iketani perfection; I need one.
Cool you shot it at longs park!
+derich bausher So many memories ;)
I lived in Sasebo Japan for 14 years. I owned the JDM Silvia. same color, except previous owner installed the RB20 inline 6 cylinder. Probably the most fun driven car I have ever driven. no I live in Seattle and daily drive a 2010 Mazdaspeed 3. fun- but not the fun rwd drive in those Japanese mountains on a cool summer night... ahhh memories.
really liked that Silvia
This was his best car review in my opinion.
The FR-S or BRZ will never replace the S13.
They will, but 20 years later.
They really aren’t that great. I’ve driven them a few times and honestly the FRS is over hyped.
@@josephandreuccetti8043 they're great cars, and an even better platform. You're just missing the point. There's literally nothing the S13 does that the FRS can't. Lol
Yeah but I'd much rather people use those as drift missiles because they still make them.
This is probably one of the best reviews yet
The best intro I've ever heard in my life. Hahahahahha
I am glad someone finally came out and said the 25 year import rule is antiquated. Yes, yes it is.
+Roger Toledo but did you pay for your suspension to be upgraded BEFORE you fixed the dent and possibly faded paint?
Yes, and the paint is fine, just has a dent
It's all one color
+Roger Toledo well point proven, although credit where it is due you are just above the average S13 owner, congrats lol.
Wow that stock Silvia is absolutely gorgeous
They go BALLLLLLZZZZ DEEP XD!!!!!!
I hope nobody ruins that beautiful Silvia. It's one of my dream cars for sure.
The japanese fox body. Thats pretty good
I've owned 2 13sec s13 hatch backs, that intro was on point!
That intro is too funny lmao
*****
Yahhhh :D
Thanks for the engine code love and the mildly subdued respect for a great platform.
- swapped S13 owner of 7 years
Prefer the stock Nissan, having a car as low as that tuned Nissan can't possibly be practical.
Do you have that guys contact info the one who imports cars ?
Andrew Zimmerman go here streetlegaljdm.com/
RegularCars Is that S13 the same that is for sale on the site?
RegularCars the silvia I mean
Drifter RX7 It is.
I would definetly buy the silvia in which Mr.Regular had his ass on uuuuunnnggghhh ( ͡o ͜ʖ ͡o)
I quite like how the S13 looks stock... but I gotta admit
That 240sx looks so much fun to drive
Hurry up and do a fox body mustang
Don Ahkbar But its soooo BOOTYFUL!
You will be granted one wish ... you welcome
they posted one this morning
I like the Silvia better.
2:37 that page-flip sound during the mod list had me on the floor. nice touch guys!
Do an R32 Skyline!!!!! if you ever get the chance.
Best reviews ever, this guy needs more subscribers. More riches to you good sir
So, if the S13 is considered the Japanese Fox-body, would it be fair to call it the "Kitsune Platform"?
twotailedavenger shut up weeb
AAAAAA WEEaBOO AAAAAA WEEABOO WEEABOO
yes it would be appropriate
I watched this video 2 years ago when first falling in love with 240s, I now own one of THOSE s13s, and I have no shame.
Come to Canada and review an S15!
One of your best reviews yet man. Thanks! :)
4 am and watching this
4:53 right now
The s13 will always be my favorite car.
Regular wholeheartedly....please move onto the FRS....please...before the majority of these cars are all gone.
just bought a two toned Nissan s13 with a pignose front
I cant find any of these in the us
the silvias are not in the us unless imported or you can get the siliva front end on your 240 too.
Please roman and mr regular do a documentary on the fall of NASCAR and the growing interest of drifting. This perfect metaphor for the change of thinking in american motor sports from gladiatorial combate of speed vs the more artful style of drifting.
I wonder... does the Almighty FINK drive a S13?
EM > FINK
Matthew VandenBerg FINK is extinct, Neal is real!
Formula21DI You made the same mistake I did. NEAL is just FINK's right hand!
Matthew VandenBerg FINK DRIVES ALL!! ALL HAIL THE ALMIGHTY FINK!!
Some stellar singing in this episode Mr. Roman.
3:07 That page though...
I always wanted to do a CA18DET swap into my 91 240 but never got a chance to. With slight tuning it becomes incredibly fun and the revs, ahhhh the revs.
ISIS coilovers? rly? lmfao
They're the bomb bro.
thats what i was afraid of
Kody Craven something something you won the internet today something something
Kody Craven Goddamnit, I'm gong to hell. I laughed way too hard.
Kody Craven Great bang for the buck
To everyone complaining about the modded 240, it's his car. He paid for it, he can do what he wants, and its such an easy car to personalize, who cares? If u feel he's ruining a rare car that should be kept stock, go buy one urself and keep it bone stock. Let people do what they want, id keep mine bone stock personally but there's no problem modding ur car if you paid for it.
Could we possibly get a link to Corey's Import depot?
Zach Stilger streetlegaljdm.com/
Thank you Mr. Regular
The audio of Balls Deep is now my new notification hahaha.
