I very recently discovered my mother, who I lost at 12 years old over suicide and depression, owned a black 1992 MR2 turbo. My father told me how much she loved the car, and always wanted something sporty as she got older, but the day after the final payment was sent in, the MR2 was totaled in an accident by another driver when I was about 4 years old, so I never got to see the car. I'm 18 now, and for a long time I was never interested in cars, especially in middle school, being one of the quiet, edgy kids, seeing them as something for "The Jocks". I'm more mature now, and I've grown out of my edgy phase, and I'm a lot less of an introvert, and watching this channel, starting about 2 years back, brought me out of the idea that cars where just for meat heads, and have become a bit of a car enthusiast. Even after my mother has passed ever time I'm in the garage working on my regular car now, I can feel a bit of my mother in me, and relate a little more to the woman who kept so quiet, but will forever and always have a huge impact on my life. Thank you Mr. Regular, without you, I would have none of this.
You should find one (eventually, when you have the ability to get one) and try to make it as close to hers as you can, It will never be hers, but she'll be smiling down all the same. And, assuming by our message, your dad is still here, he could help you make it closer to hers. You might even give him a bit of joy as well. I'm glad you got to see how cars can bring people together.
Yeah man, I've been privileged to have driven a couple in anger... They're like that old Chinese curse: "May you live in interesting times..." loved every minute of it though..
2nd gen turbo scared the hell out of me. It went something like this. Carving country corners, in control, feeling great, maybe going a little too fast for up coming sweeper, yep too fast, stabs brakes, suddenly not in control of mister 2 at all anymore, feels like giant pin just went through middle of car, tail swings around, car now facing opposite direction, holy shit what just happened,, stabs brakes furiously, car stops unharmed, pulls off into someones driveway, get's out of car to shake off jeebies .. God i miss that car so much.
I learned respect for the MR in a 1989SC AW11, best car I ever owned. It showed me the face of god when I went into a corner too hot and lifted off of the throttle just before apex.
So I’m 22yro, inherit some money and foolishly buy a ‘90 MR2 in 1992, got a great deal. The owner just wanted to get rid of it. I found out why a few weeks later. After I had my own experience with ‘snap-oversteer’. I’m going way to fast into the corner let off the throttle and SCREECH... I go spinning like a top across all 4 lanes of the road. 720 degrees later, in a cloud of burnt rubber the car stops, the dashboard is lit up like a Xmas tree and I’m jumping out of the car with a surge of adrenaline that has me shaking like a wet puppy. Oddly a couple days go by and the previous owner call me ‘just to see how I’m liking the car’... I find out it’s more like, I hope that kid didn’t kill him self and I should have mentioned that the car likes to go ass first at the apex.
@@garthdyland.6258 Yes, the old snap-oversteer is exactly what i was describing without actually saying it - but i knew MR2 people would know exactly what i was talking about. ; ) This is a car that demands a experienced driver if you want to push it hard. Even then it can be very unpredictable. Sort of like a mini version of the Carrera GT in that way i suppose. Still, great fun - just be careful with the damn thing.

Really? I'm sure your not thinking of the same car, there are plenty of cars much more ugly. The Fiero was one of the best looking 80's cars. Plus the base coup looks nothing like the fastback GT.
To me where thy messed up is the back, the way they mixed the rear "hardtop"looking window, the taillights, the rear bumper, the way the whole car looks at the back ruins the sporty front and the performance it may have had (I don´t really know the specs) I preffer a Spirit R/T when it comes to looks
I own one and yes the braking is always scary. You have to use both arms to keep the steering wheel straight when you brake hard because it's pulling towards right or left depending on which side of the road the car decided to die. Drive it casually with one hand at the bottom of the wheel and it's DEATH Oh my god I love my MR2
Pow3rus Not saying that you should drive it too fast, but what really helps with fast cornering on the MR2 is left foot braking. Perfect technique for this car!
Also, for those of you who really wanna know how to 'drive' drive the car, its a matter of progression. Its not like a rwd where you can just swing it out and recover, or a fwd that's plenty forgiving with under steer. You have to learn to trust the car to grab through turns without braking. Of course, you don't barrel through turns with WOT or jerk the steering wheel over. Everything is elegant, graceful movement. Brake before your turns to slow down, then feather your steering and throttle and be amazed at how the car responds to you. I do it regualrly, because the experience is simply intoxicating.
The bottle example is a little more accurate if you view the car body/frame as the water and the wheels/brakes as the glass jar. The jar wants to stop but the body/frame wants to keep moving. But since everything is bolted together the whole thing will move like the water, which is why the front suspension compresses under braking.
I don't know about that maybe it would help, but I would be willing to bet that better rear brakes, meaning larger diameter or higher pressure, would significantly improve handling if not fix the problem all together. Bigger brakes on the back or smaller brakes on the front would change the acceleration and instantaneous velocity about the center of gravity and since nobody really wants smaller brakes anywhere, put bigger ones on the back.
It has coil overs from the factory. Yes, that incorrect terminology matters. If you had stated after market shock and spring, like you did with "proper tires" that would have been correct.
I finally wrecked mine on the New Jersey Turnpike during a rain storm. I pulled out in front of two semis and hydroplaned into a full spin out. Luckily an old couple in a Volvo knocked me into a concrete guard rail. I was able to walk away unscathed. This car was a flying death trap.....but damn, what a way to go.
"But others, like us, are complicated.... We need a vehicle that matches our own mental states...." Omg, it's SO HARD to explain this to someone who is content to drive whatever... I can't just own a generic Corolla or Impala or Taurus or whatever, and drive it because it's "just a car".... No, I need something with panache, something with project potential, something with substance.... But people like my parents just cannot grasp that about me... "You should get a '93 Olds cuz they soak up miles and never die!" Yeah, I'll stick with my 4-series and my broke-dick '94 Isuzu Pickup...
i feel this aswell, i cant stand my ford focus. i need something that makes me want to actually drive and has some excitement to it, potential for mods and some character.
Joe: Actually, I have... I drove Isuzu Pickups for the past decade and change for that very reason; cuz I know them inside and out and can fix them easily and cheaply... Further, because they're next to bulletproof, and don't require constant fixing like some other cheaply-made welfare wagons... Plus, they look good as hell dropped to the ground, or built into little trail crawlers... Project potential! :)
CK's channel. I forget other people are older. I'm 23 and I assume everyone else is as young as well on the internet. When someone is 23 and says "I can't just own a generic Corolla or Impala or Taurus or whatever" you could see how that sounds terrible. Sorry about that little misunderstanding. I had a Mighty Max for a few years, it looked pretty cool, and it would have been a cool project car, but it was the antithesis of bulletproof.
Becoming a bigger and bigger fan of RCR. As a mechanic, almost degreed engineer, and husband to an English lit major, I really like what you guys are doing. I can get stats on any car at anytime, because internet. The review you provide doesnt focus on the easy info to get. I dont need that. I can get it. It focuses on the experience, which allows me to understand the car in a way that is not readily obtainable. On why whatever car you review could matter. Add the humour and it's just awesome. Please keep up the good work.
man, the way popup headlights come up and the lights flash on... its just so stunning, i'd buy an mr2 just for that. sad people aren't making popup headlights anymore :(
I believe it's against the law for vehicle manufactures to design cars with pop up headlights now. I'm not sure why, but if think it messes with aerodynamics or some safety rule.
TheDudeWhoCommented Both, actually. They make already bad car vs. pedestrian odds even worse for the pedestrian, and are against the law in Europe, where there's a greater incidence of pedestrians being hit by cars. But they're also a poor design aerodynamically compared to just sculpting the headlamp into the shape like a C6, and add extra weight and complexity to motorize them. There's simply no upside to them whatsoever, except that they're so cool to raise and lower.
TheDudeWhoCommented Fun fact, in Australia Rolls Royce hood ornaments have been banned since the early 1980's, but they couldn't ban pop-up headlights without banning most imported cars.
04dram04 that's a joke compared to the raw race car potential of the mr2. a toyota being called a poor man's ferrari is such a praise. even if your pride don't like hearing something like that ;)
Probably one of my favorite cars of all time. My first one almost killed me (bought it when I was 19 years old, drove it for about 3 years without any problem! Then one day, understeer followed by snap oversteer with the transition from pavement to grass at around 65mph slamming into a thicket of young trees. Had to pop off the T-top to get out of the car). Second one was an utter beast. 315whp, stripped down a bit so it weighed ~2600lbs. It was scary fast when that turbo was fully spooled around 4500. I was still young, dumb, full of cum and came in too hot around a corner and again, understeer! Nailed the curb, hobbled it home, insurance declared it totaled but I bought it back and sold it to somebody within the MR2 community who could treat it better than I could. Bought an E36 M3 afterwards which is far more forgiving and also a fantastic car (to drive, and also if you're a maintenance masochist [which I'm not unfortunately]), but man.... that itch to get another MR2 never goes away...
do you know what rev those cars were? were they pre 1993? im also 19 and looking to buy one and possibly submit to natural selection but the more i hear people talk about the snap over steer the less im convinced its a driver error. back then were you aware of how to properly drive a back heavy car aswell?
It's entirely driver error unless you've done something wonky with your suspension setup. Anybody who says that their accident was the fault of the vehicle is just trying to shift the blame to preserve their pride. Honestly, both of the accidents I had in mine I would have had in any other car. I was just going too fast for the turn and it wouldn't have mattered what layout or drive wheels the car had, something bad was inevitable. I daily drove those MR2s for about 5 years and snap-oversteer was never an issue and I drove them quite spiritedly. It's an incredibly capable car even in it's stock form but as long as you're not a cock it's not going to kill you. I think the problem people have with it is that, for it's cost, it allows you to put yourself into a situation in which you're likely to fuck up much more-so than anything else in the same price range. It ain't out to kill you, but it also damn well ain't gonna stop you from trying.
And dude, you're 19. Now is the time to do shit like drive a completely impractical mid-engine 2-seater. When you're coming on 30 you don't want to look back at think "well, I made the practical decision and got a used Accord and it was alright, never had any problems." You want to look back and think "holy shit, that didn't really make any sense but goddamn it was fun!" And that's what the MR2 is.
im probably going to buy one no matter what people say but im more worried about buying a car i can only just barely afford only to ruin it because i panic braked or something. and i live in rural england so im surrounded by twisty, steep, wet, muddy, roads where going wide on a corner will cause death by oncoming tractor.
what a coincidence. i`m also 19 and looking for a mr2. i also see you have anime content on your channel, i too enjoy the cultural melting pot of neon and crazyness that is japan. i wonder why a affordable japanese sports car caters so much to young anime enthusiast
This is the ultimate attainable dream car for me, after already learning the aspects of all the types of oversteer, and being willing to safely practice with an mr2 if/when i get one, im confident, but humble in my ability to keep this car on the road without being at a standstill. These types of cars you have to respect, because if you dont, they will bite you HARD. And i like that.
Interesting fact about the MR2: They never sold well in France because the way they pronounce the name, em-air-duh, sounds a lot like merde, which means shit. So to the French, it was the Toyota Shit. True story. :)
Sort of like the story about how the Chevy Nova didn't sell well in Spanish speaking countries because "nova" means "no go." Cool story. Thanks for sharing.
The Mitsubishi Pajero is called the Pendejo in Mexico because of the spelling (and the vast numbers of dickheads who drive them). Also MR layout cars suck in snow, and France gets quite a lot of snow in winter, hence why France pioneered FWD cars (I love my 206 GTi).
Actually, someone working for Toyota in France (my guess at least) realized it would sound like "est merde", and they changed the name to "MR" (2nd gen), and "MR-S" (3rd gen). They had a lot of time to come up with those brilliantly innovative names, since they skipped the first gen entirely, never available to the French. Guess they still didn't sell that well in France after all. Source: fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_MR
this video literally made me buy an mr2.. i still like revisiting this video, it brings me back memories of when i knew nothing about this car. i never knew passion like this before. thanks internet
And even then the Toyobaru is lacking due to being less powerful than a late 90s model Maxima and having no STi kit for turbo or any other stock enhancements besides the usual expensive TRD shit.
I love my car. It really does its best to tell you when you are about to die. If you disregard those hints, and they arent subtle, you deserve to spin out.
the MRS is the culmination of shit and sad hope for the 90s. A MR2 that has had its soul taken away and replaced with conservatism. It would be a sad sad review
You couldn't be more wrong. As I said, throw out the 140 hp 1ZZ engine and replace with the 190 hp JDM 2ZZ. The car weighs 2,200 lbs. The 200 hp SW20 weighs about 2,800 lbs. You do the math, genius. Sincerely, a guy who's sick of the unjustified hate for the MR2 Spyder.
My points are #1) The MRS is over 600 lbs lighter than the SW20 with only 60 fewer horses and 2) no lag because NO TURBO. Boost the stock motor if you want and there's your 200 hp equal with the SW20 still with 600 fewer lbs to carry.
GT6SuzukaTimeTrials I agree with you. The 2ZZ SHOULD have been in there from the get go, but seeing that Lotus has taken that helm for their Elise it wouldn't happen (love politics). That's why I have put a 2ZZ in my MR-S and it's how it should've been.
I had a 1994 non turbo a few years ago. Petrol is expensive in the UK! So much character and a great engine noise right behind your head. The handling is sublime on a twisty road in the dry and quite terrifying when it's greasy and wet.
THANKYOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!OMGILOVEIT!!!!!!!!!!! SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!! we mr2 owners appreciate your love of our toy's, and you seem to "get" them so well, why are you not one of us yet!!!
Godmason That sounds nice. Those of us with a fast Peugeot GTi have to bow our heads in shame as an elderly person putters past in their diesel station wagon.
So that's why a lot of cars are rolling vaginas these days. Consumers blamed their driver-error on Jeep Wranglers being "top heavy" or the MR2 being "oversteer happy" and now everything is a safe pillow with wheels?
just got to drive gently in the snow. This is my SW20 fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/t31.0- 8/10547208_10154582884150277_6659619756198725767_o.jpg
I picked up one of these SW20's on its last legs ~10 years ago. Gradually restored/improved it, and eventually put a 600hp+ built V6 turbo setup in it. Love these cars. Have considered doing the same to an AW11...
Also, the "non-disableable" traction control is not Toyota's fault. It's being mandated by Government. Thankfully Toyota gave us the Pedal Dance to fully disable it.
Sort of, but that doesn't explain why American and German sports cars are still fun. RCR's Celica GTS video actually explains it perfectly. The Japanese car makers really didn't know what we wanted as far as sports cars in the early and mid 2000s and most people went American or German. Japan lost big on this and has since moved to a much safer business model selling us family cars like Accords and Camrys because they knew that we'd still buy those cars over the American counterparts.
I got behind the wheel in a laser blue SW20 Turbo a few years ago. In winter. In northern Sweden. In snow and ice. Did I spin out? Well yeah. After about 5 minutes. Three times in a row. Even with studded snow tires. I'm used to my front Engine, rwd Volvo 240 Turbo. Perfect for fun in the snow or on dirt roads. This thing on the other hand is fun but damn does it kick back. Great car otherwise.
Cool review of a great car. I had a non-turbo 1990 SW20, and it was easily the best car I've had. The build quality was excellent, everything in the interior felt solid in a way that's rare in new cars these days. And with the engine right behind me, I'd peer out over it through the beautifully curved letterbox of a rear window, and pity the fools left behind as I floored it away from the lights. Magical.
Still have my '91 Black SW20 T-bar. Every time I take it out, you get smiled and waved at. People, namely the now early 30's, love seeing these cars. Reminds us of grammar school and easier times.
This is the best car review ive ever seen. providing me with helpful information on how rear wheel drive can be dangerous, as well as keeping me extremely entertained.
The infamous "INSTA DEATH SNAP OVERSTEER OMG AHHH" can be easily prevented by driving smooth, and corrected for by paying attention and knowing to NOT TURN TOO MUCH WHEN COUNTERSTEERING! that is the main problem, idiots who have no idea what it is capable of buy it, think it will act like a normal safe "hold me pls" car like a civic. they go alittle over the tires limit then BAM they get struck with instant fear "WTF DO I DO OMG" so they WHIP the wheel to the outside and BAM flips back around when the car finds grip and SLAMS into the wall back corner first.
My first car was a 1987 Fiero GT. I wouldnt let any of my friends drive it because of the very difference you were describing, braking late into a corner would be disastrous. Brake early, gas out early, thats the formula for RWD Mid-rear engine, but front engine fwd teaches the opposite habits to new drivers that can hurt them if they drive something new.
Bought my first one 3 years ago and then totaled it in a snow storm because I didn't have anything else at the time. I was younger and dumber but by far it was my favorite car I have ever owned and I'm hoping my project mr2 can get back on the road someday and bring back some good times. Thanks for the video
That visual engineering with the jar literally got my mind racing,, ON RACING. It feels like I have instinctively been understanding it. Having had my eyes on this, it’s on my mind now. Mixed with some critical thinking, I’ve just gotten faster. Thank you so much RCR!!
Obligatory: Headlights go up! Headlights go down! Yo, you should find a Ford Probe GT. It's got a headlights go up/down button that doesn't even turn on the lights! :D Also, I really /really/ want one of these. You think it's better to find one as barebones as possible?
...how can you feel the heat from the transmission lol. I've owned one of these, and even completely stripped, you can't feel any heat unless you press your hand on the firewall.
I own one as well, the transmission is completely behind the driver. I felt the heat of the transmission driving my friend's Miata, but never in any of my MR2s.
It saddens me that most of these are now rusted, 200K+ miles, oil everywhere, riced up with big rims/spoilers, broken flip-up headlights, or crashed :( I know that wasn't really a sentence but you get what I'm saying.
Artyom Timiryazevskaya Let me cheer you up: have a 220k mile one with nearly no oil loss, only original Toyota parts nearly no rust whatsoever and even upon close inspection looks brand new in some places. And here in Germany there is a relatively big community of people owning and caring for their SW20’s and SW10’s. Gonna drive mine till death. Or until it kills me. Hope that doesn’t happen
Roads Untraveled That's what I like to hear from people until they find out that I swapped it. I enjoy all 3 versions, I stuck with the MK3 since everyone hates it while I don't. Eventually I'll get a good near stock condition 94 / 95 MK 2.
jaypinoy83 good luck, they only made like 90 mr2 turbos in 95. They are a collector's item because that's when the car was "perfected". 91 & 92 are the more raw versions.
Blaine Chappell If you're talking about the US market only, then yes, there's only about 90 of them. But I live in Canada and we import cars a lot. They made 5,000 MR2's in 1994. Not that hard to find haha. I've got a bone stock and all original 94 GT-S.
Didn't even get a 10th of the way into this video before like, comment, subscribe. That was the most surprising/intelligent/talented transition in any car video I have seen in my life. You're my new best friend. Cheers!
I want one! my dream car: this, with an ls1 swap and a transmission swap to a quattro (which is actually compatible with the ls1) plus a reasonable spoiler and new tires. maybe new brakes and new springs too.
Why buy a car as your "dream car" and then drop an ls1 and basically make it no different than any other car? The sw20 has potential in its own without being lazy and trying to drop an ls1 in.
It's easier to put in a 2JZ turbo. Since the Altezza was offered with either the 3S like the MR2 or the 2JZ (non-turbo version of the Supra engine), you can mix and match parts to get it to run through the MR2 gearbox. You'd be surprised at how much it costs to fit an Audi gearbox and an LS1 in an MR2 and tune it to 800hp (you're looking at $8,000 for a turbo kit at least). It would be cheaper to build one of the hundreds of mid engined LS1 kit cars that weigh half as much as the MR2 and keep the engine at only 400hp.
I just drove the N/A version of this last week. I am 15 and it was the first manual transmission car I've ever driven. Drifting it in a stone parking lot was pretty fun haha.
I sold my 94 uk na sw20 about 2 months back after about 7 years because the sills had rusted through and I find myself looking for a replacement turbo. Everything you've said is true. These wee cars get right under your skin. Fantastic visceral cars. Luv and Peace.

It's crazy to think that Toyota made like 4 sports cars at one point in time. Now they just make toasters and washing machines.

Really? I'm sure your not thinking of the same car, there are plenty of cars much more ugly. The Fiero was one of the best looking 80's cars. Plus the base coup looks nothing like the fastback GT.
To me where thy messed up is the back, the way they mixed the rear "hardtop"looking window, the taillights, the rear bumper, the way the whole car looks at the back ruins the sporty front and the performance it may have had (I don´t really know the specs) I preffer a Spirit R/T when it comes to looks
xsbgtr don't worry about it. The fiero is a piece of shit from day 1.
I own one and yes the braking is always scary. You have to use both arms to keep the steering wheel straight when you brake hard because it's pulling towards right or left depending on which side of the road the car decided to die.
Drive it casually with one hand at the bottom of the wheel and it's DEATH
Oh my god I love my MR2
I was thinking about getting one, so I shouldn't buy one :( if it's that dangerous
Levi Ackerman Buy the NA, drive carefully, brake really early and you are fine.
Pow3rus NA? how can i find an mr2?
Pow3rus Not saying that you should drive it too fast, but what really helps with fast cornering on the MR2 is left foot braking. Perfect technique for this car!
Levi Ackerman NA not the turbo
Also, for those of you who really wanna know how to 'drive' drive the car, its a matter of progression. Its not like a rwd where you can just swing it out and recover, or a fwd that's plenty forgiving with under steer. You have to learn to trust the car to grab through turns without braking. Of course, you don't barrel through turns with WOT or jerk the steering wheel over. Everything is elegant, graceful movement. Brake before your turns to slow down, then feather your steering and throttle and be amazed at how the car responds to you. I do it regualrly, because the experience is simply intoxicating.
"One wheel spinning, the other wheel doing My Cousin Vinny"
THANK YOU FOR THIS
😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
S P E E N
The bottle example is a little more accurate if you view the car body/frame as the water and the wheels/brakes as the glass jar. The jar wants to stop but the body/frame wants to keep moving. But since everything is bolted together the whole thing will move like the water, which is why the front suspension compresses under braking.

INERTIA!!
also can be rectified by coilovers and proper tires
This car was a flying death trap.....but damn, what a way to go.
got totaled
Martin Smith Volvo's are so safe, they save others lives.
How damaged was the Volvo out of curiosity?

"But others, like us, are complicated.... We need a vehicle that matches our own mental states...."
Omg, it's SO HARD to explain this to someone who is content to drive whatever... I can't just own a generic Corolla or Impala or Taurus or whatever, and drive it because it's "just a car".... No, I need something with panache, something with project potential, something with substance....
But people like my parents just cannot grasp that about me... "You should get a '93 Olds cuz they soak up miles and never die!" Yeah, I'll stick with my 4-series and my broke-dick '94 Isuzu Pickup...
you sound like you have never been really poor. the kind of poor where if your car breaks down, you can't afford to fix it and make rent.
i feel this aswell, i cant stand my ford focus.
i need something that makes me want to actually drive and has some excitement to it, potential for mods and some character.
No prob... I used to get that feeling too, back in the day....
This was hands down the most unique and entertaining car review I've ever seen.
man, the way popup headlights come up and the lights flash on... its just so stunning, i'd buy an mr2 just for that. sad people aren't making popup headlights anymore :(
Illegal LoL
My NA MX5 satisfy my Poppy headlight needs xD
I know, I had a ST182 Celica a few years back, flashing and popping the headlights up and down was hilarious
TheDudeWhoCommented
Fun fact, in Australia Rolls Royce hood ornaments have been banned since the early 1980's, but they couldn't ban pop-up headlights without banning most imported cars.
I've had my 91 mr2 for a little over a year now, and its my daily driver. I love this car autocross, mountain runs, its amazing.
That sleeping bag bit is frighteningly accurate.
ManDiC This.
So true
I like how your intro song was a remix of "music of the night" from the phantom of the opera
+U.S.Skyline BNR32GTR haha, my wife was listening from the kitchen and noticed that as well
I love the SW20, it was when Toyota made cool cars.
frs is pretty cool though
04dram04 that's a joke compared to the raw race car potential of the mr2. a toyota being called a poor man's ferrari is such a praise. even if your pride don't like hearing something like that ;)
A joke would be the crap ton of pseudo-"sporty" looking FF's that manufacturer's are producing. The FT-86 is far from a joke.
Have 26 yrs on my MR2. Quite reliable when maintained accordingly. Nothing like it. Unfortunately a vanished breed.
When you're coming on 30 you don't want to look back at think "well, I made the practical decision and got a used Accord and it was alright, never had any problems."
You want to look back and think "holy shit, that didn't really make any sense but goddamn it was fun!"
And that's what the MR2 is.
im probably going to buy one no matter what people say but im more worried about buying a car i can only just barely afford only to ruin it because i panic braked or something.
and i live in rural england so im surrounded by twisty, steep, wet, muddy, roads where going wide on a corner will cause death by oncoming tractor.
what a coincidence. i`m also 19 and looking for a mr2. i also see you have anime content on your channel, i too enjoy the cultural melting pot of neon and crazyness that is japan.
i wonder why a affordable japanese sports car caters so much to young anime enthusiast
And i like that.
the SW20 turbo is crack on wheels. after you sell it, you'll crave it again.
I waited so long for you to do an SW20 - and it was as good as I expected. I will buy one of these one Day. Dreamcar. Affordable Dreamcar.
I had a '91 non-turbo MR2 back in the day and i still miss it.
im almost getting my first car and i want this one so badly
@@almonte468 not a good first car lol. Only two seats. It was my first car though lol
@@albertptran ya i agree its gonna take some learning cause of the oversteer. i only really want a 2 seater coupe tbh.
Interesting fact about the MR2: They never sold well in France because the way they pronounce the name, em-air-duh, sounds a lot like merde, which means shit. So to the French, it was the Toyota Shit. True story. :)
Sort of like the story about how the Chevy Nova didn't sell well in Spanish speaking countries because "nova" means "no go."
Cool story.
MR were(sw20 and MRS) sold in France
Actually, someone working for Toyota in France (my guess at least) realized it would sound like "est merde", and they changed the name to "MR" (2nd gen), and "MR-S" (3rd gen). They had a lot of time to come up with those brilliantly innovative names, since they skipped the first gen entirely, never available to the French. Guess they still didn't sell that well in France after all. Source: fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_MR
Scorpio Assmödeus GTX1 Right, but that's not going to change the minds of any Peugeot drivers intent on mocking your foreign car for it's name, is it?
this video literally made me buy an mr2.. i still like revisiting this video, it brings me back memories of when i knew nothing about this car. i never knew passion like this before. thanks internet
RIP fun Toyotas
:(
the gt86 is a ton of fun
The '90s was the last decade when Toyota made anything exciting. Now all we got is a Subaru with a Toyota badge.
And even then the Toyobaru is lacking due to being less powerful than a late 90s model Maxima and having no STi kit for turbo or any other stock enhancements besides the usual expensive TRD shit.
Toyota did a majority of the design and tuning of the chassis. Yes it's a Subaru motor, but that doesn't make it a Toyota badged Subaru.
So I drive the most dangerous car in the world. Got it.
You'd better trade that death trap in for something sensible like a Caterham 500R or a Hellcat.
Slubber.nl did you just say the Caterham is sensible. LOL
I love my car. It really does its best to tell you when you are about to die. If you disregard those hints, and they arent subtle, you deserve to spin out.
Christian Gotsch haha! Absolutely!
Kevin Stump The joke
Your head
First gen MR2 also my favorite!
I really enjoy the songs, its something special.
Thanks for reviewing the 1st and 2nd Gen MR2.
Now, review the MRS. haha
MRS is my favorite. Lighter than the AW11 and more power with the 2ZZ Celica GT-S engine.
the MRS is the culmination of shit and sad hope for the 90s.
This is still my favorite review
THANKYOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!OMGILOVEIT!!!!!!!!!!! SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!! we mr2 owners appreciate your love of our toy's, and you seem to "get" them so well, why are you not one of us yet!!!
ONE OF US. ONE OF US.
All MR2 owners wave to each other regardless of generation. It's the love club.
Godmason very true!

That sounds nice. Those of us with a fast Peugeot GTi have to bow our heads in shame as an elderly person putters past in their diesel station wagon.

the "mr2" wave, its a peace or victory sign waved to passing mr2's, sad thing is i used to do it a lot more 10 years ago...
I can't explain how much NOT having center caps is bothering me.
"It's the James Dean of cars, either on of them." I lol'd out loud for all the wrong reasons....
This is my *favorite* Regular Car Review by far. So many fantasitcally true statements, it's a masterpiece
To be honest your 'physics' lesson was one of the best I've ever seen, you guys always have great videos and tell it like it is. Keep it up!
So that's why a lot of cars are rolling vaginas these days. Consumers blamed their driver-error on Jeep Wranglers being "top heavy" or the MR2 being "oversteer happy" and now everything is a safe pillow with wheels?
I own an sw20 turbo. its my daily driver here in canada. Best car ever
just got to drive gently in the snow. This is my SW20

Unless you're in BC, I would not want to drive an MR2, in winter.
Hope not during the winter!
This is one of my favourite videos on RUclips.
Luv and Peace.
I can't stress enough the warmth in my heart when I see you posted another video, especially one about a car I really like.
I picked up one of these SW20's on its last legs ~10 years ago. Gradually restored/improved it, and eventually put a 600hp+ built V6 turbo setup in it. Love these cars.
Have considered doing the same to an AW11...
what happened to Toyota.
they got boring, even their sports cars like the gt86 have non turn offable traction control
You can completely disable the frs/brz/gt86 traction & stability. Google Pedal Dance...
Also, the "non-disableable" traction control is not Toyota's fault. It's being mandated by Government. Thankfully Toyota gave us the Pedal Dance to fully disable it.
EPA and competition. That's what happened
Is this your favorite car, Mr. Regular?
SmileyLegoGuy AW11
RegularCars really? I thought it was the Miata with the headlights
OhCrapItz He he, headlights go up, headlights go down!
RegularCars Have you driven an MRS yet to complete the experience?
RegularCars any thoughts on the last gen. MR2 Spyder?
Am i the only one that spotted the Datsun 280ZX/280Z/240Z ZZZZZZ in the background at 5:45?
DanielKB I saw it also
"It wasn't up to manufacturers to make cars safe to accommodate your lousy driving habits in the 90's."
Ralph Nader has entered the chat.
There’s a difference between not accommodating an idiot and not accommodating any driver at all.
But fUcK rAlF vAdEr LoL!
mustang drivers should watch this physics lesson
This is the best car review ive ever seen. providing me with helpful information on how rear wheel drive can be dangerous, as well as keeping me extremely entertained.
I just learned so much about Weight in cars and front/mid/back engine cars! Thanks RegularCars !
That can also be prevented by 1993 to 1995 models.
I'm like that with my aw11
That 280zx in the background lol, do it
+Ty U. dude just saw it and came little
Saw that too lol
I like the self-effacing way you guys talk about yourselves, it makes the video even classier.
Bought my first one 3 years ago and then totaled it in a snow storm because I didn't have anything else at the time. I was younger and dumber but by far it was my favorite car I have ever owned and I'm hoping my project mr2 can get back on the road someday and bring back some good times. Thanks for the video
It should be noted that they made it with independent rear suspension from 93 on, much improving the snap oversteer.
it was always independent, they revised the rear suspension with longer toe links and strengthened strut towers
Oh snap, singing in Spanish. Followed straight into Highwind. Goddamn.
92 Turbo here. I'm still very much alive.
Barely
...after buying three NA half cuts to replace the fenders and bonnet.
Same here, but I learned all about snap oversteer when I learned to drift in a miata.
That visual engineering with the jar literally got my mind racing,, ON RACING. It feels like I have instinctively been understanding it. Having had my eyes on this, it’s on my mind now. Mixed with some critical thinking, I’ve just gotten faster. Thank you so much RCR!!
This video took my RCR virginity years ago. Still watching every Monday.
Obligatory:
Headlights go up!
Headlights go down!
Yo, you should find a Ford Probe GT.
It's got a headlights go up/down button that doesn't even turn on the lights!
:D
Also, I really /really/ want one of these. You think it's better to find one as barebones as possible?
You guys should review a mazda Rx7. Their a pretty cool blast from the past just like the MR2s
this car is famous for the supercar replicas
Nah, I'd say the Pontiac Fiero is a better candidate for being used for super car replicas.
Garry Koalman Fiero's chassi is as stiff as scrambled eggs and half of the chassi is plastic
Andrew Jackson
True, what I meant to say is that the Pontiac is a more popular candidate for super car replicas vs the Toyota MR2.
but me moms rocks that hyundai i10
poephooft This car deserves way more respect than to be turned in to linguine replica.
Shout out to Roman for the spanish bit of the song at the end, you nailed it.
LOL that sneaky use of final fantasy 7's soundtrack right at the end put a big smile on my face
First of all your reviews are genius. Second you gotta do the third generation now. It's only fair. :)
...how can you feel the heat from the transmission lol. I've owned one of these, and even completely stripped, you can't feel any heat unless you press your hand on the firewall.
I own one as well, the transmission is completely behind the driver. I felt the heat of the transmission driving my friend's Miata, but never in any of my MR2s.
OMG Phantom of the Opera
Got to drive one yesterday. Such a happy, fun car. I’m in love
I miss my 1991 mr2 turbo!!!! i'm still sad it was rear ended and totaled. One of the best cars I have ever owned. So much fun!
I think I spotted one of these today which is strange, cause I live in Alabama.
Btw 60 fps coffee hype!
It saddens me that most of these are now rusted, 200K+ miles, oil everywhere, riced up with big rims/spoilers, broken flip-up headlights, or crashed :(
I know that wasn't really a sentence but you get what I'm saying.
@@lefunghi6151 telling him that you have the car he wants but will never get probably didnt cheer him up lol
9:35 - 9:51 very well said.
I got a 93 MR2 when I was 22 and damn did I love that car. Still miss it to this day and I would love to get one again some day.
I bought one a year ago but sold it because I needed something reliable. I'm 22 years old and regret selling it everyday.
So much depth and personality in this review. Double thumbs up!
I hope you'll eventually review the 3rd gen MR2 / Spyder. I know it's not quite as "hardcore" as the old MR2, but they're now really affordable cars.
I hope so too. Yes, not as "hardcore" / performer as the MK2. Each gen had their own purposes. The MR-S in particular was going after the Miata.
Affordable cause they're slow
Aaaaaand they're gone. 😢
Saab Sonett broh!
This is the first video I watched from rcr and got hooked ever since.
Tnx Mr. Rcr
My favorite kinds of car are interesting cars made by mass-market manufacturers and assembled from boring OEM components into a cool configuration.
CRAZY FOR LOVE CRAZY FOR LOVE CRAZY FOR LOVE CRAZY
DOOT DOOT DOOOOOT DOOT DOOT DOOT
I like 80's 90's styling :-(
I guess this is why the Porsche 911 is dangerous as well.
that's pretty much why the 964 got labeled "widow maker"
same deal for the 1st gen Audi TT
Audi TT is not rear engine tough, but it is still dangerous.
Don't forget the Corvair. Similar problem.
Also the NSX, but it has a 50/50 weight distribution so its not as bad but still lol
My girlfriend almost blew a gasket with excitement when she heard your re written 'music in the night' cover.. well done Sir!
Didn't even get a 10th of the way into this video before like, comment, subscribe. That was the most surprising/intelligent/talented transition in any car video I have seen in my life. You're my new best friend. Cheers!
I want one!
my dream car:
this, with an ls1 swap and a transmission swap to a quattro (which is actually compatible with the ls1)
plus a reasonable spoiler and new tires.
maybe new brakes and new springs too.
Why buy a car as your "dream car" and then drop an ls1 and basically make it no different than any other car? The sw20 has potential in its own without being lazy and trying to drop an ls1 in.
blacknight1313 because it would be a mid engined v8 4wd car with 800bhp. how do you not want that.
martinshoosterman haev fun trying to pull 800 hp out of an ls1 with no space
RapeCaek Are you slow? a 2jz in an mr2? bahaha.
Review the mr2 spyder!
Luv and Peace.
i wish all car reviews were like this
I was planning on getting one by next year is it that dangerous? I'm scared now.
+Rafael De La Vega A car is really only as dangerous as it's driver. if you don't drive like a tool, you should be fine.
in 93 they updated the rear sub Frame and arms. to help with the snap over steer. 93+ are safer.
+Rafael De La Vega You'll be fine if you know when to push it and have fun. Don't just mash the throttle in a turn and all that other common sense crap. Be extra careful in the rain when on the freeway getting off.
+adrian cardenas 93+ is also more powerful
+Rafael De La Vega You'll be fine, I bought one in japan and I have to say that it is the funnest thing I've ever driven. It's not nearly as bad as they make it seem.
Same Bridge you reviewed the Aspen ??
some nostalgic reason for that .. or you just getting lazy ? :P
Or maybe he reviewed more than one car that day.
another FFVII song! keep it up
23 years on it still looks like a fresh design in my eyes. Well done Toyota!
I love that you wrote new lyrics to 'music of the night' from phantom of the opera for the theme song! I'm even more in love with this channel now than I was before hearing it.
