I'm fine with calling cars like this in the future "Chumbawumbas"
I took my driver's education road test in a Dodge Shadow just like this one back in 1994... lol 😂 The only difference is the version that I took my driver's test in was a hard top.
Dodge Shadow, the car you take on a road trip during cloudy, rainy days/afternoons.
My dad had a 1989 Dodge Shadow ES manual.
He didn’t get rid of it until he had it for 20 years to the day when he traded it in for a 1993 Buick Park Avenue in 2008.
That Buick is still his daily driver.
The ES didnt come around till 1993 so no he didnt
My grandpa bought one of these for $250 and we changed the headgasket. Forever made me love cars.
15:50 the wheels are almost in sync with the camera shutter it appears frozen in time
This is a perfect example of a pure-to-form RCR review. Absolutely splendid.
I love that you still do regular car reviews. And not move onto brand New Lamborghini and Porches!
Wow... a Shadow convertible. I bought a new '87 Shadow coupe with the 2.2L right out of college. Its interior build quality was atrocious and it was SLOW AF. Owned it nearly 8 years and 90K miles. It was reliable. Never left me stranded.

The text you couldn't read after the basketball image
7:22 there's a good line! I learned a ton about this thing; great video. Bless that Neon footage.
And Roman is killing it with the 311!
All Mixed Up!
every time i hear lee iacocca i always think its some spanish holiday.
I litterly clicked on this, thinking "my friend had one in highschool"
Lolololol right away
Say what you wish, we love our 90 ES turbo 5 speed 4 door Shadow
This was my first car when it was new... Good memories... Also the first car I wrapped around a telephone pole due to incredible understeer! Mine had the 2.2L turbo in it though.
Suuuure, blame the understeer. x D
@@nakoma5 That's my story and I'm sticking to it. LOL!
God, we had one of these turds back in the day, The "Shadow America" model, it was so stripped it didn't come with a radio or an antenna.
Parts of this car make me nostalgic for my Mom's 1992 Dodge Spirit, same steering wheel, same gauge cluster, and that 90's Dodge interior smell
Holy shit I just smelled it, too. How did you do that.
@@maverickofkain To be honest, I have no idea haha
@@dalehadley3283 the DODGE SPIRIT R/T and THE DODGE DOHC TURBO and
the CHRYSLER SHADOW JUVENIL TURBO were the most loved cars here in Mexico the turbo engines with amazing 265hp good cars before chrysler and dodge started make trash like the neon but I like the 1996 neon ACR and R/T with double camshaft making 215 hp and the experts said its super reliable compared with the base trash model
Hell, the Mopar interior in my Jeep TJ has survived 20 years of weather and abuse. It ain't pretty, but it didn't fall apart in a decade like contemporaneous GM plastic would have.
I loved my ES Turbo
I smoked those wheels in high school daily
Had one, gave up when it needed a third transmission. Ah, ...no. Also had it stolen once due to the super easy to steal sign on it lol.
My first college car in 2002 was a ‘91 Dodge Spirit ES with the 3.0 V6.
Never before or since have I owned a car with so much character, yet such wretched reliability.
Super fun car to drive, loaded with options, surprisingly peppy to drive, and always broken.
Early 90s Chryslers are definitely a guilty pleasure! 🤓
My buddy had one with a turbo, and a 5 speed. It was pretty cool back then.
How did 5 speed gearbox work on it? Was it good? I heard Chrysler 5 speeds consumed clutch plates often.
@@karoltakisobie6638 I never got to drive it but, it seemed like it worked nice. I never heard of him having problems with it.
"Sha-don't you know this is a Sports car son!!" hurr derr hurr!
I drove a Sundance (same thing) in ‘98. It was a tired, creaky, leaky old tub with an interior borrowed from the Omni/Horizon. I kind of miss it.
It's baffling to think they made several variations of this same car: the Sundance, the acclaim, the spirit, and the shadow.
@@normang3668 How different could they have all been? I mean they probably had the same engine and transmission, as per this one's exact specs from the minivan.. Same switch gear, same gauge cluster, door locks, radio/cassette deck etc.. Did they even have one with at least leather seats?
@@marcusdamberger Its not the same cluster. most of the parts are body type specific. each brand received different trims. the AA body was sold as a Spirt, acclim and lebaron so maybe it feels there were more. everything evolved from the 1981 Kcar, Id say the engineering is mostly shared but the parts between the cars differs for each application.
@@marcusdamberger it got pretty confusing at dealerships in.the 80s and 90s with so many K-car derivatives. Every year a couple more had hatched. The ugly part was that most of them were worse than the originals.
I have one of these but with the turbo. Can confirm it makes a great roommate. It only eats my MONEY
Best line ever spoken by a man in his 50's! 👍🏻
Love the 311 spin-off on the music. This engine wasn’t all that bad in my opinion. It was reliable and responded well to a good exhaust, 52mm TB from the 3.3 liter it was a direct bolt on, you could also split the intake manifold apart and port the crap out of it. My buddy used to have one that would run low 9’s in the 1/8 mile.
The Dodge Shadow is my favorite Honda!
Oh man this really takes me back! My first car was one of the 4-door Plymouth Dusters that were the fatter, slower, non-convertable version. Had the exact same interior as this one. What a shitbucket. Drove that thing around for almost 10 years
Sundance*
@@kgb4187 Shhh, it's a Duster
9:55 Damn, that lineup looks niiiice.
My girlfriend and I necromanced a dead 2.2L Shadow about two tears ago, and I found this video. Two days ago it was totaled, and I find myself here again. It was a shitbox, but we saved it and it saved her in return. Even with all its faults, despite all the things we had to replace, it was a good car.
i miss watching your videos when you would upload them at 4 AM so i could procrastinate in college :(
i miss college...
I miss being in college and ignoring myself racking up 10s of thousands of dollars in debt.
@@BanCorporateOwnedHouses ah you americans ahaha

I knew you were a man of culture
Holy shit i swear SECONDS before you said it I was thinking of my one friend from high school that had one of these. 😮
When I drive this car somewhere and someone comes up to me to talk about it, 90 percent of the time that's what they say 😂
Idk what is more concerning, that I laughed at the dad joke or that I understood it immediately.
My 92 dodge shadow convertable has the 2.5 4 cylinder it's not a performance car but it's fun to drive
Shareware doom plus enter the wutang sounds like a solid weekend
I love how that same engine was put in the base model Stealth and late 90s 3000GT's. They produced 161 hp as a car weighing over 3000 lbs...lol
Kid in high school had a new 3000gt auto with this engine.....thought he was the SHIT until he lost back to back to my 88 grand am with the quad 4 and my friends merkur xr4ti. Mind you we each paid less than a grand for our beaters.
Moooom, RCR is reviewing a 90's car again.
@Not The Technician I do though
...and still hates Mopars, of any era.
Like 12 years ago I had a MK3 turbo Supra. And on the highway I ran into all white Dodge Shadow turbo that looks straight out of the 1980s it even had that blue graphic you saw in cups back in the day. And from about 40mph to like 130 he was holding me off by a fender I was so pissed. We started creeping past 130 I was able to walk by him. I was pissed that this car was giving me the business lol
"...and a finger curls on the monkey's paw." You are a poet and a wordsmith.
Love the Dodge shadow
Definitely one of the A-tier RCR episodes
"Berb...! Freaking burb." lol
This is an awesome episode, mine is a 89' but it has the 2.2L turbo ll engine and a 5-speed trans. Cool to finally see an episode about the shadow on rcr
Had a 87 turbo myself comfortable ass car. Didn't quite get to build it up ..kid.. but was awesome also had the best taillights that year. Much better than the black striped ones
I had one of those cars and bought it new. It was a good car. I often would have four adults in it and it was just fine. The car had AC and it worked very well . No it was not a sports car or anything like that but it was a nice car to drive .
"The dad joke at around four and a half minutes made me laugh deep in my gut, and made me truly happy for a few seconds." - Me. A dad.
Put this car on a lift and you cant close/open the doors. There is literally an inch plus flex gap. Thats how flimsy these are
When this car came out I was still driving a 1973 Plymouth Satellite. Ugh.
Hmm.
That shifter really doesn't look like a 4sp auto.
They did have a 3sp auto oddly with lockup in 3rd. It would lock up at about 40mph after the trans heated up.
Being it's nearly a 500rpm change I could see people thinking it's another gear and not lockup.
9:51...thats like putting a fly, a worm, an ant, a dungbeetle (and it's ball of dung) in a zoo and showcasing them with a rhinoceros on the same information page.
Our local zoo has all of those except the Rhino. They wonder why no one ever goes there too 🤷♂️ they also feature various nocturnal animals but are only open 9-5 because they let a 21 year old college graduate run it as a resume booster for minimum wage
It’s still prettier than the ugly generic bubbles they make now
Fuck no it's not
As ugly as new ones
@@antonioederlopezlopez7341 I would argue even the new Dart is prettier than this
Your opening line, holy crap, I DID know someone in high school with one of these.
Had those rims on a 86 Charger. Wish you could find one of those things. I can hear it now 😂
"The way they represent their era... with the clarity of a near death experience"
My father had a '92 Plymouth Sundance (same car) 5-door when I was growing up. The rear bumper would fall off occasionally, but we'd just put it back on and give it a solid thump so the bracket would hold it in place with friction for a while. The trunk rusted away and we covered the hole with an aluminum sheet and a wooden board. I loved that car. It was the first car I ever drove, practising for my learner's permit. We "upgraded" to a Sunfire when it finally died just after I got my licence.
