My first car was a 17 year old 1986 regular Buick regal 2 door, and sure it wasn't as fast but it was essentially the same car and just an absolute pleasure to drive. Opening that GIANT window, where your elbow cannot even touch the back when your arm hangs out. Love it.
SpaceManDawn I definitely miss it dearly. It was a crazy car to drive around town. Folks waving, giving you thumbs up, people wanting you to floor it. I would park it and folks would be waiting for me to return so they could ask questions or share their story about their past Grand National run-ins. I don't regret selling mine particularly, because it needed a paint job, new window/door/t-top rubbers, etc. and I didn't have the desire to take that project on. I just miss the experience of driving it. It made me feel like a kid again, riding in my parents old 80s GM cars.

I've always loved my Buick Grand National, always. But after watching this video I am so in love with my Grand National. This video is hands-down the most comforting video to watch for a Grand National owner. Thank you for sharing this I think I've watched this once a week just to know that I own a Grand National.
“The grand national isn’t death... it’s life that is just masquerading as death” might my favourite way anyone has ever described a car. Video was amazing, I’m not the most knowledgeable when it comes to cars but I’ve always had a personal obsession with the 86 grand national. Most definitely reignited the fire inside me to buy one when I can
10:40: "Easier to tune than a Trombone." As a trombone player I love this joke and it is super easy to tune a trombone since you basically play a tuning slide! :P
I'm glad someone on the internet can appreciate some of the advantages of an automatic transmission. Everyone believes if it's auto it's garbage, not the case there are pros and cons too everything
Well Despiste in my country (Argentina) Usually calls the autos as "Sissy transmission"; But in my opinion they never or ever know about the existence of this and the GMC Cyclone.
"The bitter taste of a smokers nicotine kiss..." Well, damn. A video about a car just made me genuinely blush. I've no idea which memory is taking its time to surface of of that but you done had to wake it up didn't you?
Mr. Regular; I really love how you contextualize cars and owners in the culture of their day. It makes the reviews way more interesting and insightful. Keep it up
The GN unset the balance of power at GM when Buick built a car faster than the Vette, which earned the Grand National the nickname The Vette Killer. Let me tell you the Chevy division was none too pleased to take a back seat to the Buick in the later 80's... but thats the way it was back in glory days of the Grand National.
Wayne Jones This(among other things) is why I love Buick. They put whiney Chevy in it's place after decades of them crying to corporate every time they thought their line up was in danger from another division.
But your not mentioning that the Corvette could still beat it on a warmer day.The Grand national at 35 degrees outside could break 5 seconds 0-60 but when it was 75 plus outside The time Rose to 6 seconds or more. That's the hidden secret that grand national owners know but they won't tell anybody. On say a 90 degree day an 85 automatic Corvette will beat any grand national because the Corvette won't be as affected by the heat.
@@danielwatne5535 All you have to do is add alcohol and that problem is fixed. They actually had a plan for methonal injection the dash even has a light called "power injection" When they couldn't get the alcohol injection past safety standards without a major redesign they axed the idea. With alcohol they cars were 12 second cars from factory. The cooling effect from alcohol helps even when the temperature isn't very cool. Also in colder temperature the cars were above 300hp on stock cars this was also confirmed by a lead designer.
Vault Boy® Agreed I had a 1987 Monte Carlo SS but it could never hang with that 0 to 60 time with a 305 V8. I did drive a T Type turbo a GN just not in black and it was awesome.
Other than under the influence of high quality MDMA from the late 90s, I have never felt more empathy with another human being than I did with you for the 20 or so seconds of giggling in this video. I giggled like that behind the wheel once... I had a Cletus Duke kinda shop swap out the stock 280 cid V8 for their junk yard's 350 Rocket in my '80 Olds Cutlass about a week before. The carb was shot, and I didn't have enough cash left over to have them fix it, so they set it at a fast idle, and I got it back from the boonies to downtown Halifax using just my brakes. it was a sad, sad week. Thursday, I used my high two-figure pay cheque to buy a carb rebuild kit at Canadian Tire, and spent Saturday rebuilding the 4bbl Rochester. And re-rebuilding. And before my high school shop teacher stopped taking my calls, re-re-rebuilding. Finally, the carb was back in one piece, and not pissing gas all over me, the engine compartment, my neighbour's windows, and her flower box in a manner that made lawn sprinklers jealous. I back out of the driveway, and give 'er some gas. Fail. Nothing changed. I went for a drive anyhow, in a funk as blue as the smoke from a chainsaw. Well, some minutes into that drive of shame, I found myself first at a stop light. It turned green, and I angrily shoved the gas pedal about half way. It stumbled and nearly stalled out, as expected... and then the now warmed-up engine digested whatever bit of schmutz that had been clogging its works, and the Olds surged ahead suddenly, with a rush of torque that seemed like it'd never peak, not unlike what I figure the GN's turbo lag felt like. And I giggled. Just like you. And gave it more gas, and giggled harder. Just like you. Thanks, Mr. Regular. You made my day, with a Nah, and a giggle.
"carb rebuild kit"... uh-oh. "rebuildinging"... .. wait for it.... "Rochester" *SHUDDDDDER* A 2bbl progressive Rochester is one of the few pieces of auto tech I've ever looked at and wondered "How did these things work *new*, much less worn?" Special. Screwdrivers.

Yeah, M*A*S*H* was the best. It taught a very important lesson that so many Americans seem to have forgotten, war is bad. I can't remember the last time Hollywood produced a show about war that didn't glorify it.
I have seen so many channels for car reviews... none of them is like yours. You tell a story every time. With so much passion and love. This is how a true fan talks about a vehicle. Absolutely outstanding!
If the GN is the hit album, and the GNX is the hidden track, then the '87 WE4 Turbo Regal is the "previously unreleased" track you see in an ad 10 years after the band broke up. Imagine that same exact GN with chrome bumpers, your choice of colors inside and out, and various aluminum parts to bring the weight down. That was the '87 WE4.
My father drove an '87 GN until my grandparents sold it after his death in 2006, when I was seven. The memory of his car has always been somewhat of a fantasy for me, and I've searched without luck for years to find the one he owned. Fortunately, I inherited his restored '66 Nova. Thank you for making this review, as it has been nostalgic for me.
There's a local car garage near where I live and a guy has about 30-40 of these things in varying degrees of condition some more worked on than others. It's scary actually haha
As a European, I'd never heard of the Grand National. I somewhat knew of the Regal's existence. I really want a GN now though... Can't find a single one for sale in my country :(
Alfred van Kuik Weird. I knew about that car a long time ago, and im also european. But you're right. There's not a single one in the second/third hand american cars dealers or internet. GNXs are probably even more rare.
Alfred van Kuik , don't feel bad, there are only a handful of 86-87 GNs/T-Types I've found here in the US, and only one GNX...and that last one is pricey ($75K US, it's number 503, claims to have been fully restored to as new). Local to me, too, so I'm considering selling organs. I'm also one of the few who'd rather have a T-Type, because not black, and kinda fly under the radar.
Cool Cadillac Cat I would prefer the T-type, because I wouldn't feel bad about modding it, and if I owned one, I would want to mod the hell out of it. You know, IRS rear, full cage, etc...
they forgot to mention that the GN was better in performance than the 86 corvette, and that they were stealing corvette sales, that's why GM took them out.
If buick had been allowed to make a smaller car that was more of a 4-5 seater 2dr instead of a 2+2, and given a RWD platform with this engine, and the option of the 200r4 or t-56 they would have thrived. Unfortunately Buick could have just beefed up some internals, used a bigger turbo, and called it a day. That would have eaten a ZR1 in a church lady car, so it didn't happen. If they let Pontiac do the same things in 89 the TTA would have been the king of the hill. GM protects the vette! A lighter weight manual trans vehicle that was RWD with the 3.8sfi would have reaked havoc on the whole industry. GM is a shit company because they let politics like this get in the way of progress.
I will own one of these before I die. I've wanted one since I was 6 years old. In 1991. This is probably your best review yet. Good job. Do an IROC-Z next? If you can find one that hasn't been hacked back together a hundred times...
Hello. Australian here. I'd not heard of the Grand National until the Run the Jewels released their 4th album. It get referenced a lot in the songs, and is on the cover. Great album BTW.
The 1985 Chrysler Le Baron GTS 5-door sedan did have a Mitsubishi-sourced 2.6L I-4 as an optional normally aspirated power plant, but otherwise was powered by a CHRYSLER-sourced 2.2L I-4, with or without a turbocharger.
I have to admit I am slightly addicted to youtube. I have seen all before these eyes. From golden retrievers sexually assaulting young boys too diy testicular cancer inspection demonstrations. But his I must say is the best video I have ever come accross on youtube. Well done sir, I take my hat off to you.
Mr. Regular's great grandfather, Archibald G. Regular, wrote a weekly column called regular coach reviews in his local newspaper, the creamed corn Gazette.
"Eh there's no point to talk numbers. Go watch any other the hundred or so Grand National videos and mini-docs and Black Air if you want to listen to someone read an instruction manual to you." Regular Car Reviews in a nutshell.
The '85 LeBaron GTS did not use a Mitsubishi engine, it used the same 2.2L Turbo engine that Chrysler used in all of its FWD turbo cars of the era. The only Chrysler vehicles that used turbo Mitsubishi engines were all rebadged Mitsubishi vehicles. (Conquest, Colt, Talon, Stealth)
Gabe Clendenning That depends on how you look at it. You can get one in the 12's pretty cheaply and surprise people on the streets with a hell of a sleeper. I used to own a few fwd Chrysler turbo cars....I've moved on since though.
I had a few 2.2's back in the day, but never a turbo version. I still remember a Car & Driver article that went on and on about how great an import small car was, and in the same magazine was a one page article about the Omni GLH, which outperformed their feature care in pretty much everything, and they still dismissed it.
My absolute favorite car of the eighties! My best friend picked one up new in 1985 at 18. Had the most fun ever! Great car! Thanks Buick for having the guts to go 'rogue 'within GM to produce an iconic masterpiece!
Thank you! I knew someone had to correct this cat! 84-85 Cars are NON-Intercooled (often called "Hot Air" cars) 86-87 Cars (RPO LC2) are the intercooled cars. If memory serves me, the actual factory tune in an 86 is also different than that of an 87 and the 87 GNX have a completely different tune than the base 86 & 87 LC2 tunes.
Joe11Blue I'm kidding, I do have a soft spot for them. So long as they look factory and don't have a front mount where the bumper used to be haha. RB30et wasn't ever in a skyline was it? R30 was... but not in turbo form right?
"hey Australia, this is our equivalent of your XB Falcon" *Mad Max interceptor conversions INTENSIFIES* also, Grand National is basically Pauley Perrette, as a 70's car.
Intercoolers started in 86. And the 8th digit of the VIN should be an 8 if it is a grand national. Trunk lids are able to be replaced so someone could bolt a gn trunk lid on a regal. I had an 86 gn and it was awesome, but id love a regal t type, because its a good sleeper and black sucks to keep clean.
In Mr. Regular's most recent video, he reviewed the third Gen Trans Am and mentioned that you could get it in a four cylinder variant. Is that the one that had the turbo?
I've destroyed more 200-4r transmissions than most have seen. I miss the days of the GN and the TTA. We had so much fun driving cars to the track and getting kicked out for 9 second runs and then driving it home. If only we had a transmission that could handle the power of the turbo 3.8l.
Great commentary. Ver enjoyable. Please note in 87 only Turbo Ts where factory lightweights with aluminum bumper inserts and aluminum rear brake drums.
LUKAZ G This unfortunately isn't a GNX. GNXs were reworked by McLaren with better programmed ECUs, bigger intercoolers, and better turbos. This is the regular Golf instead of a GTI, or a GTI instead of an R32.
obligatoryprofile a 13 yr old aussie kid would be unlikely to know it at all as they weren't sold by dealers over here. The buick 3800 was fitted locally to the holden vn commodore but only n/a, shame as the previous model had a turbo 6 offering but with a nissan engine
More like Buick Intimidator. It doesn't look angry, but it looks like if you stepped on its toes, it would show you why you shouldn't have. Its the guy at the bar at the saloon during the 1800's that doesn't say a word and the bartender already knows what he wants. Then when troublemakers show up at the bar and swipe his drink, shoots all three of them. With the same bullet.
Never forget my buddies T-type ‘87 ripping up the tires from just punching it at 30mph. Granted the cool October air was a welcome treat to the turbo but still. A G-body six cylinder ripping up the tires. In a Regal. He kept trying to sell me the car but I already owned a ‘84 Monte Carlo SS and 90 Mustang LX 5.0L. If you read this Sam yes I regret not buying it back in ‘90.
I have an 87 T' type. It's still blue with blue interior. I do get to spend my time discussing the differences or lack there of, between the two models. I like that she's underestimated.
@@Robert-goose1 - A cocky guy driving a Porsche would have thought the same thing back in the 80s until his car got smoked by this so called clunker. You definately got to be a mallenial hybrid (a rolling vigina) driver to make such an ignoramus statement about one of the most collectable cars ever.
Well done! I got a 84 hot air T Type in 1990. As i was a mechanic i joined the club. Thru the years i made the car very fast, not as fast as a 86/87 but close. I beat a LOT of v8s of the 90s

Cool Cadillac Cat
I would prefer the T-type, because I wouldn't feel bad about modding it, and if I owned one, I would want to mod the hell out of it. You know, IRS rear, full cage, etc...
I had an 87. With a few mods I went 12 flats on street tires . Very fun car .
Me: “I just need to hear your voice, GN”
GN: “Broooom! Brrrrroooooommm!”
Me: “
is this matt farah's million mile buick?
Ryukachoo Yes.
Robert Baratheon :v
Ryukachoo i dont get it?
SaigaExpress i'll tell you when you're older
***** Uhh because you have to have the Current mileage presented on documents in the glove box.
DEATH. CLAIMS. ALL. ...NAH!!!!!!
they forgot to mention that the GN was better in performance than the 86 corvette, and that they were stealing corvette sales, that's why GM took them out.
SMH. I swear people will claim GM killed everything because it was stealing Corvette sales, even the Cobalt SS. Hell, even the Aveo.
Daniel Mitchell the GNX even was faster than the Ferrari f40 in the quarter mile. Only the lambo had a faster time that year
The 3.8 was only in a very limited run (500?) of Indy pace car replicas.
If buick had been allowed to make a smaller car that was more of a 4-5 seater 2dr instead of a 2+2, and given a RWD platform with this engine, and the option of the 200r4 or t-56 they would have thrived. Unfortunately Buick could have just beefed up some internals, used a bigger turbo, and called it a
day.
Way faster than the corvettes .
This review was comically informative and awesome, great job! That BOV flutter sounds so melodic!
Loved this. This is one of the most epic cars of all time and you did it justice.
I will own one of these before I die. I've wanted one since I was 6 years old. In 1991.
This is probably your best review yet. Good job.
Do an IROC-Z next? If you can find one that hasn't been hacked back together a hundred times...
avmerhar84 My dad bought one of them new, and said he was actually happy when it was stolen, he hated it so much.
inudude15 LOL
All 80s camaros have been put back together multiple times lol, not exactly the pinnacle of reliability lol
kgisabeast I had a 1981 Camaro, worst car ever! The engine died before 100K, of course some guy bought it and souped it up.
Yeah I know a guy with an 87 or 88, sweet looking car but it seems like he's had to replace almost everything on it
This is going to get a lot more views now that Kendrick Lamar released GNX.
Ambitious and NOT rubbish. Clarkson, May and Hammond would be impressed with this video… pretty interesting and I laughed
With an overdose of sneering snark!
I saw one of these a couple of months ago and it was the most excited I've ever been seeing a car on the road.
Did you ever get your hands on a GnX?
The '85 LeBaron GTS did not use a Mitsubishi engine, it used the same 2.2L Turbo engine that Chrysler used in all of its FWD turbo cars of the era. The only Chrysler vehicles that used turbo Mitsubishi engines were all rebadged Mitsubishi vehicles. (Conquest, Colt, Talon, Stealth)
+Jaybee 100% true!
Some 80's Chryslers used the Mitsu 2.6 but it wasn't turbocharged.
+Jaybee thats not completly true, some of the sebrings (mostly coupes) had the v6 which if i remember right are mitsunishis
Gabe Clendenning
That depends on how you look at it.
But he said TURBO Mitsu's
Well done... RCR this is your masterpiece.
This is the best car review/philosophy/comedy RUclips channel, period! Dude, keep on making these awesome videos. I and many others love them!
Holy hell. How is it that a car review can hit me in the feels this hard. Seriously a work of art.
My absolute favorite car of the eighties! My best friend picked one up new in 1985 at 18. Had the most fun ever! Great car! Thanks Buick for having the guts to go 'rogue 'within GM to produce an iconic masterpiece!
Awesome video. Miss my '85. 2 critiques:
Intercoolers were '86 and '87
And in '87 the T-Type was rebranded the Turbo T
Thank you! I knew someone had to correct this cat!
84-85 Cars are NON-Intercooled (often called "Hot Air" cars)
86-87 Cars (RPO LC2) are the intercooled cars.
If memory serves me, the actual factory tune in an 86 is also different than that of an 87 and the 87 GNX have a completely different tune than the base 86 & 87 LC2 tunes.
The Australian equivalent would be the VL Turbo commodore
Alan Keane First thing I thought when I heard the dose. We should make sure he never gets his hands on a BT1, he might die from excited delirium.
Alan Keane Exactly what I thought.
Alan Keane Except this car is actually cool.
bummaggots What's not to like about a turbo Skyline stuffed into a Holden shell?
Joe11Blue I'm kidding, I do have a soft spot for them. So long as they look factory and don't have a front mount where the bumper used to be haha. RB30et wasn't ever in a skyline was it? R30 was... but not in turbo form right?
The first really fast car I rode in was a 12 sec GN. I've also ridden in the GSX Portotype. Same owner. First time I saw car-bubbles too.
The mom bit makes me shed a tear every time. Man you mix me up inside sometimes. Thank you Mr. R
"hey Australia, this is our equivalent of your XB Falcon" *Mad Max interceptor conversions INTENSIFIES*
also, Grand National is basically Pauley Perrette, as a 70's car.
I'm just gonna...call my mum
Lol, I watched until the end end, and Mr Regular asked if anyone will loan him a GNX
The cornfields and narrow roads are also a pleasant sight! Reminds me of my childhood in Central New York. Great video for sure.
REGULAAAAAAAAAAAAR 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Someone gotta do it
They forgot to mention the 1980 and 1981 Turbo Trans Am
In Mr. Regular's most recent video, he reviewed the third Gen Trans Am and mentioned that you could get it in a four cylinder variant. Is that the one that had the turbo?
+Toto Africa , nope. in 1980, 1981 the turbo trans am was a 4.9l V8. \Drive did a video about it for big muscle. check it out!
with the little turbo light thingy
third gen camaro was 1982-1993, and the iron duke sadly wasnt turbo'd. poor little 90 hp engine
If that.
"It's the bitter taste of a smokers nicotine kiss"
-you're killing me.
Entertaining videos, its good shit.
you forgot the 80-81 Pontiac Firebird Turbo Trans Am...301 V8..210 hp
Love the prose brother. Very good work. Liked GN’s since ‘84 when I was 10. Your video here probably has me liking even more. Salud!
I've destroyed more 200-4r transmissions than most have seen. I miss the days of the GN and the TTA. We had so much fun driving cars to the track and getting kicked out for 9 second runs and then driving it home. If only we had a transmission that could handle the power of the turbo 3.8l.
When you list the other G-Bodies you forgot the Olds Cutlass.
Aw man I was expecting Matt Farah's million mile Lexus
Bryan Doherty Alas. This is not Matt Farah's million mile Lexus.
David Hoffnung Are you Matt Farah's million mile Lexus?
Bryan Doherty I was just expecting the "joke".
David Hoffnung No this is Matt Farah's million mile buick.
0:05 MUUSTAAAARD
Great commentary. Ver enjoyable. Please note in 87 only Turbo Ts where factory lightweights with aluminum bumper inserts and aluminum rear brake drums.
Regular car review are so rewatchable. You can pull any genre from what every year it is. And boom.
I'm from Australia and yes I know what a GNX is... And I'm 13...
LUKAZ G but your age means that you're unlikely to know it by reputation, which was the point.
LUKAZ G This unfortunately isn't a GNX. GNXs were reworked by McLaren with better programmed ECUs, bigger intercoolers, and better turbos. This is the regular Golf instead of a GTI, or a GTI instead of an R32.
No i just know about it because I'm into cars. I helped my grandad re-build his s2 e type... Which is now mine.
Good guess though :)
obligatoryprofile
a 13 yr old aussie kid would be unlikely to know it at all as they weren't sold by dealers over here.
Perfectly stated
Stayed till the end. Yes, I would love to see you folks review a GNX!
This was automotive journalism at it's finest. Great job.
So I get the impression that this is the Alice Cooper of cars. :D
The Bonneville was NOT a G body. Also only the 86 and 87 had intercoolers, not the 85.
I get the feeling this guy has studied literature. The language, the references, the images.
I have an 87 T' type. It's still blue with blue interior. I do get to spend my time discussing the differences or lack there of, between the two models. I like that she's underestimated.
This car THIS CAR was the pinnacle of gm. The way you explained it was absolutely perfect.
Love this car,, my cousin rolled his one morning when he fell asleep driving big dummy
dream car. not even modified just stock.
jacob mills A clunker is your dream car? I could only imagine a drug dealer or recently released prisoner driving this.
Robert so 1 year later, do you know wtf you’re talking about yet? Lmao
I'm a brit with an interest in cars, but I have absolutely no idea what a Vincent is.
Motorcycle
+Frank West Seriously? Did you even watch the fucking video? The car in this video is similar in spirit to a motorcycle, or a kit car!?
+Frank West what's it notorious for?
Vincent black shadow........
Well done! I got a 84 hot air T Type in 1990. As i was a mechanic i joined the club. Thru the years i made the car very fast, not as fast as a 86/87 but close. I beat a LOT of v8s of the 90s
Thank you for picking stone in love for the intro song! it's perfect!!
Gslash25 I too tip the hat for the great Journey tune!
