Happy Weds everyone! When you drive brand new cars everyday like we do, getting an opportunity to drive a classic like this car is a rare opportunity that we just couldn’t pass up! If you’ve had your eye on the FD generation Mazda RX-7, you won’t want to miss this review! Should Mazda consider bringing back this nameplate to the states someday? We think so!
@@cdb7876I'm not sure if there was a general MSRP across the nation, but he got the price from the original dealers receipt I still had from the original sale.
its that 90's joy that us old car owners experience and is lacking in todays new cars... my current car 94 probe gt 5spd.. daily driven for last 30 yrs
Cause forced obsolescence and copy and paste hand’s happened yet. Now all cubs look basically the same, really all that is being produced and are made to be traded in every 5-7 years.
The RX7 was voted the second best looking Japanese car ever right behind the #1 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4. This is when you don't include the obvious best looking Japanese car the Toyota 2000GT.
This is the epitome of "do what you love and you will never work a day in your life". I'm so damn jealous that there are humans that get to do this for a living. Had a long day but this put a smile on my face.
You were talking about the feel, this is why no matter how fast an EV goes, it never bets my V8 Challenger, the exhaust sound itself beats any fast EVs.
I owned two of them, an 82 RX-7 GSL and a 91 RX-7 GTU. He's right about the maintenance and emissions but I absolutely loved them. I would buy another rotary just to hear that wonderful, high-revving sewing machine sounding rotary!
For our 20th anniversary I bought my wife a 92 Miata (5 spd). It was red and had several boy racer mods including 17 inch wheels. Same color as that RX. I spent a couple years getting all back to stock. Loved that car but my wife only drove it a few times. She preferred an auto. Sold it for more than I paid for it. Great time for Mazda! Thanks for doing this video
Best looking car ever made, IMO. And as an FYI, the car was sold in the US for 3 model years (93, 94, & 95), not 2 years as stated. I bought my first FD in 1997, it was a used 1993 Touring model in Montego Blue. I bought it from a Mazda dealer, and literally days after taking it home, it experienced overheating. I took it back, they said they fixed it, and gave it back. Of course, it started overheating again days later. Took it back to the dealer, and they said the motor needed replacing. Good thing I bought the warranty. They ordered a crate motor from Japan, and 2 months later they had installed it. A few years later I sold the car. My 2nd FD was MUCH better sorted, and I purchased that in 2004, a red '93 R1. The previous owner had done all the necessary preventative mods to keep the motor cool and happy, and the motor had a fresh rebuild and was in amazing shape. Sold that car in 2008, I think, and I regret making that decision. Lol. Amazing cars, very small cabin, beautiful exterior/interior. Have a 2nd car if you own one of these. Very tough to live with as an only car. Lol. And, I understand, most people owning them today will absolutely be owning these as a 'toy', or secondary vehicle. I SO wish Mazda would bring back this body style, somehow, as an EV. No idea how that would be possible physically (it wouldn't), but that'd be the perfect car to me.
I really loved this one. How you went from your normal professional review to “holy S***t “ so quickly 😂. It reminded me of the raw emotion we used to get from cars in the 80’s and 90’s. It brought back memories of my first drive in the Renault 5 GT Turbo in the late 80’s, I still smile now thinking about it 😊.
The 1990s Mazda RX7 is one of my favorite cars ever, so RX7 content is always welcome. It’s probably the best looking car from the 1990s, and drives amazingly.
Aww, man! You’re making me nostalgic for my 1988 Mazda RX7(FC) that I drove almost 6 years! Man, I miss that car! It was a fun car to drive! It had 82,000 miles when I decided to become a grown-up and bought a small Nissan sedan. I had no issues with it, except that the air conditioner had gone out when I decided to trade it in. I wish I could’ve kept it forever!
Superb car, superb video, superb production values. Wonderful to see a presenter so enthused about this beautiful, unique car. As a former FD and RX-8 R3 owner, I can vouch for the presenter's determination that such rotary engine vehicles are a living, breathing mechanical presence.
I had a 93 that I bought in 95. I only had it for a year (and it spent months in the shop), but my friends and I still tell stories about that car! So many fun memories in such a short period of time
The fender vents are not actually fake. It's not designed for extracting air out of the wheel well, it's for the oil coolers on the RX7 to have a little tunnel around the wheel's fender liner, leaving the fender vents for heat extraction.
Well, I've learned something today. As many times as I looked in there, I couldn't see anything that it would possibly vent. Thank you for the correction. Sorry for the misinformation. Glad to know it's design was purposeful. It did puzzle me that Mazda would waste any time or material on something just for aesthetics on such a pure approach for a no-nonsense sports car. Hope you enjoyed the video otherwise!
Later RX7 are icons and will only appreciate in value like Honda NSX. Great video and please do more as some of the cars from the 90's are the best. I had a vw european corrado vr6 and still miss that car today. Refreshing to see such a car and also you were like a kid in a candy store. Been a long time seen you so excited about a car! Sure there's faster but you can't create that same experience. It also looks, drives and sounds totally amazing.
You said it's been about a decade since you reviewed an RX8, I've been watching you for about a decade. I'm glad you got to see and drive this car. Congratulations!
The FD truly is one of the greats. It checks nearly every box for what I look for in a fun sports car. The weight, the power, the sound, the handling. It's all there. Say whatever nonsense you will about the rotary but Mazda was and still is smarter than you. Absolutely razor sharp. Like a toy you simply can't put down. One of the greatest privileges of my life has been owning one and can't see myself parting ways with. Mine is fairly stock aside from a simple Koni/GC suspension, full exhaust, Nardi wheel, radiator and some good pads. Boom. Nothing fancy and it's absolutely killer. No extensive mods and zero nonsense which is exactly what the FD should be about. A true admirer of what Mazda set out to fulfill. I can attest, 10-12mpg when you're enjoying it and 25mpg on the highway.
Currently own a 95 cw FD. Anywhere i go the first question i always get asked is "Do you wanna sell it"... UH NO. Turns heads, dont see a lot of em and i love it.
I almost bought one in yellow. It was the R1 version. I still regret not getting one. I did have a blast with the original Miata. Mine was a 1990 in red.
Wonderful review! I grew up around these cars, all gens, used to see them in Montego blue all the time as a kid as that was maybe the most common color for early 93’s . I own a 6spd 07 rx8 and handles like heaven especially on coilovers and puts a smile even without the turbos of the 7. 232hp out of a NA 1.3 L that revs to 9k rpm is addicting
Another awesome video, this one is so special, my neighbor had one of these back in the day when I have my Scirocco, the look of Jubilation on your face as you drove this car just cracked me up. The Fiesta Flash
Mazda‘s made some great cars back in those days! My first convertible was a 91 Mazda Miata silver it was a blast! My brother had the RX7 and that was really fun to drive.
Always loved this channel. Pointed here from an rx7 group. Knowing that you're a rotard makes me like you that much more. Good review. Want to review a boosted rx8 next 😅
Wow that Mazda has not aged at all~~ ❤️❤️❤️ it looks so beautiful. It honestly looks like the first NSX from the front which is not a bad thing because the NSX is also timeless~~ also I did not know how unreliable this rotary engine was 😯😯😯 but props to Mazda for trying to make it work
Amazing review as always. The car is fantastic and so are all your videos. I believe you said this is your first drive with an RX 7 and I'm about to have mine as well which I would love to share with you all.
RX7 was a dream car growing up, slightly rare, exotic,Japanese, styled much different than most other cars. The final RX8 built on that line for its last era as one of the greats, Mazda had some great years, the RX8 was Mazda flavored but not the full car it could have been.
This and the RX 8 were my favorite cars growing up until I realized how much maintenance goes into actually maintaining them and the expense but great cars
Keeping this one for life! It was my dream car and I am lucky to have it. I could sell it and make a lot of money, but then where would I be? I would be regretting it the rest of my life. Hope you find a good one someday at a good price. They are good cars if you do your research and take the time to learn its needs.
would have loved one of these..I had the 87 turbo...variable boost control added and unfortunately turned up too high... apex seals went south with the dreaded no compression sound one day when I went to turn it over...of all the cars ive owned ,this one was still my favorite..crazy cool cockpit feel and superb seating.
Glad to see the original BOSE snake system is still there. I love the FD3S. Back then, I chose to go with the MKIV Supra Turbo. Because of the pseudo back seats for the kids. At least how I sold the idea to the wife lol.
Thank you for putting these out. The content and wisdom is so valuable. Too many people keep this tight to the vest but the real purpose we have as humans is to share our wisdom and gifts with others. Many thanks Robert.
The RX-7 is one of my favorite Mazda, you can guess what's my other one. I like the simplicity of the interior, the sound of the engine. In my country ( El Salvador) is very rare to find one. However there's an RX-7 making 550 whp, that was 10 years ago, I don't know if the car has been upgraded to make more hp. It was nice to see Sofyan making a review of one of my favorite cars of all times
Actually the fender vent behind the wheels are functional and removes low pressure air from the fenders. When the air funnels through the oil cooler on both sides of the main intake it travels over the wheel wells and out through the fenders!
I love your retro reviews, every now and then I'll come up on some of your old reviews when you were just a young man. We need a comparison test with this, the 300ZX Twin turbo, and a 3000 GT VR4. Or a stealth but preferably the 3000 GT. Thank you Sofyan❤🎉
Just for the record. Rotaries run hot because there is no proper "exhaust stroke" to help cool the engine. Instead all 3 intake, compression and exhaust strokes are all happening pretty much at the same time.
That was an excellent video and yes ,the FD was a wonderful, zippy car. A friend had a 93 and a 95. Tough to work on though, and don't get me started on the vacuum lines. But otherwise, fantastic cars
Awesome, my brother had a fd3. Black with tan interior, at the time yr 2001 I had a supra mk4. Miss these cars and these times. Please grab a 94 supra to review next. Complete the best of the 90s 🍻
This era of sports cars have aged so well to me. The RX7, Integra, Eclipse, 300X and ofc Supra all still look good, even the interiors and materials look good.
So I guess Keisuke's yellow FD3S required engine oil change like every week since he was running up and down the hills on Akagi a lot; come to think of that Kyoko's black single turbine FD also required a lot of engine oil change since she is the uphill specialist in her area.
Wow! That RX-7 is clean! I really enjoy your content! I had no idea you were part of the LGBTQ+ demographic! Thanks for mentioning that. Sometimes in the auto enthusiast community, much like many other communities, you can encounter some prejudice and stereotyping. You represent us well and show that we are much more than the LGBTQ+ stereotype of our community! Keep up the great work! Also I had no idea that you had to put oil in the fuel in the RX-7. and yes, I miss that 90s design. I do currently drive some great Japanese cars. I have a 2013 Miata Grand Touring PRHT in copper red and a 2021 Tacoma TRD OR in red, both with a 6 speed manual. Every day I have a great driving experience!
Sofyan is true to himself, which is what all people should be. He doesn't have an agenda and doesn't push his personal views on the public, even though he could. He is very respectable about his preferences. As far as adding oil to the gas, you don't HAVE to do that, but it is much better for the engine as it NEEDS to burn oil by design to lubricate those apex seals. The car injects a little bit of crankcase oil with the fuel mixture but it's better to add more oil into the fuel tank when filling up, about 1/2 fl oz per gallon of gas. Just another weird thing to learn and do when owning an RX7.
I’ve said this for years - Mazda doesn’t have a huge budget like Toyota but they absolutely make mechanically near-perfect sports cars. Then in the 90’s and even to this day with the MX-5. 👌🏻
Man he went from a gentleman to freaking nut case when he put the pedal down! What a nut! He lost his decorum when those turbos kicked in. Screw that mindful shit, demure nothing, he's a petrol head!
Happy Weds everyone! When you drive brand new cars everyday like we do, getting an opportunity to drive a classic like this car is a rare opportunity that we just couldn’t pass up! So I guess Keisuke's yellow FD3S required engine oil change like every week since he was running up and down the hills on Akagi a lot; come to think of that Kyoko's black single turbine FD also required a lot of engine oil change since she is the uphill specialist in her area.
I always thought they were such beautiful cars
One of the classics of all time. Back in day I remember a lot of modded single turbo 400 hp-500 hp RX7's running around in the scene. Revs FOREVER !
I’ve said this for years - Mazda doesn’t have a huge budget like Toyota but they absolutely make mechanically near-perfect sports cars. Then in the 90’s and even to this day with the MX-5. 👌🏻
RX-7 pops up on my subs feed, you know i gotta click!
Man he went from a gentleman to freaking nut case when he put the pedal down! What a nut! He lost his decorum when those turbos kicked in. Screw that mindful shit, demure nothing, he's a petrol head!
You need to review more 70s/80s/90s cars!
