I work at a grocery store, and an older woman (maybe about 80 or 85) needed me to bring her groceries to her car. "A teal Civic," she said. When I got to the car, I was amazed. It was an EH2 just like this one; definitely garage kept, that loud teal paint and body were in near perfect condition, the interior was clean and still a deep gray, unfaded by the sun, the rear cargo area carpets were recently vacuumed... I couldn't believe it. Her plate number indicated that she was the first and only owner of the car (plate was about 20-22 years old), and she apparently babied it all those years. Babied it to the point where even those mid-nineties NJ plates, notorious for fading and peeling quickly, were in perfect condition as well. What an honor and privilege to see such a showroom-quality EH2 in 2018.
Early-mid 90s Japanese compacts/sports cars are simply some of the best cars ever manufactured. Something magical about them. Small, affordable, reliable, cleanly styled, well engineered cars, and they often don't even need to be fast in order to be desirable and fun to drive!
Owned a 2016 fiesta St and find my 1998 celica st202 far more rewarding and exciting to drive guess its just the feel of the older car gives it more character
Hell, even Toyota’s econoboxes 20-25 years ago got better mileage than a Prius. But for the same reasons: no weight, no safety, no features, and a tiny little engine connected to a five-speed manual.
@@andrewwalker9960 It's really emission requirements that explain the differences in economy, not so much the weight. The VTEC-E is extremely lean burning, so it has tons of nasty emissions, especially NOx. You cannot sell an engine like this now days, it's too dirty, especially on a local pollution level, the pollutants tend to stay low to the ground, so people breath them in. It's like the worst combination of gasoline engine emissions, and diesel engine emissions.
@@psikot MPG depends a lot on the driver. Unless there's something wrong with the car, I can get better mileage than the EPA rating in basically everything. Most people drive very wastefully, chewing up gas and brake pads for no reason, and so will fail to match the EPA rating.
I came here to look at an old Honda, not to get feels. Actually, scratch that, this is why I'm here. This show (for a lack of a better word) is now scarily relatable. And that's why I love it.
In 2001 I bought my first car with my own money. It was a 1994 EJ Civic Coupe, and let me tell you, I treated that car like shit. I ragged it out and drove it EVERYWHERE, including a 130 mile daily commute to my office in Knoxville, Tennessee from the mountains in Scott County Tennessee. It had > 200K on the ticker when I lost control and put it into a telephone pole in 2003 at what the investigators said was about 80MPH on impact. I should have died. I have still never found a car I loved more. It saved me from death in spite of myself and my own stupidity. This review is everything. So many memories. Rest In Pieces 1994 EJ Civic Coupe
Benjamin Smith that's crazy, I knew a Mexican guy that rolled his 4 door eg from someone who hit his back end after he took a corner too fast, and that thing was mangled,he surprisingly lived with minor injuries and lives to tell that story.I told him the same thing his parents told him...god saved your life, but he's athiest is what's so fucked up.
Joshua Schulz it's not impossible, there's been a handful of cars that have made it to one million. And on a Honda like this? I don't doubt 500k. My friend is a huge Honda enthusiast as is his whole family and he said his kids first car will be a 95 Civic with 600k miles haha
Worked at honda for 7 years. 300k was quite common. 500k was a bit more rare as most 2nd and 3rd owners did not do maintenance. That said you would see a 500k car more often than you would think. Our used car manager had a 88 with over 600k and on original motor and trans.
I feel that another reason something like this won't exist is because I don't see an 'average' consumer getting something with less than 100HP, purely out of mis-guided principles.
@@psikot How about aluminum-reinforced ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene for $30,000? Won't be as rigid, but if you only care about lightness it'll do the job and then some. Same stuff that they use for NASCAR crash bumpers.
@@psikot Extremely loose ballpark estimates. I'd have to do a material study and cost analysis to give you anything more exact since a UHMWPE frame with 6061 aluminum braces for rigidity hasn't actually been done yet at the scale of a full-size car.
I mean, it's good to have enough power that you don't get run over by a semi when getting on the highway. But that threshold scales with weight, and a light car doesn't need gobs of horsepower to meet that threshold.
You hardly have to have a job if you own one of these. So cheap to drive and fix. I think I spent a total of $17 the last 2 times my car broke down, combined over like 4 years. I drove mine for 21 years and it currently has 585,000 miles on it.
These were from that one moment in time where corporate interests and human interests somehow aligned. I bought a 1992 Nissan 2WD pickup for $1100, drove it seven years changing only the fluids then sold it for $1100. That object was at least as helpful to me making my way in life as any single person I've ever known.
@@Gamer-db6xp It's been parked for the last few years since my grandma passed her 1997 Civic Ex to me. The mileage hasn't changed. The body and floor were so rusty that even though it ran like a dream, I didn't want to fall through someday. It was kinda rough looking where this '97 looks like it's still new.
As a driver of a EH hatch, this video nails the feeling of the whole car perfectly. It is the perfect incarnation of everything we want to remember 90s cars for, and is pure bliss to drive. Can't be mad in one, since there's nothing to be mad at. One of the best cars Honda ever made, and I have yet to find a car that embodies its sense of pure joy better.
The only car I've found that was more enjoyable to drive than an EH/EG hatch, is an ED/EF hatch (or CRX). Everything is lighter, everything is even more simple and mechanical. The interior is much more spacious and airy, the dash and wheel and gauges and even ergonomics are comparatively un-modern. It's got a CABLE clutch! In my opinion, the EF generation was the last Honda that was obviously made by a motorcycle company.
The segment of this video about the car meaning more than just a car really resonated with me. I drive a 2002 v6 mustang with a manual transmission. it's my first car. Its got more comforts that this car for sure, like AC and power steering (sometimes i wish it didn't with that noisy ass pump but oh well), but for me, it really does mean freedom and independence. I've gotten lost in it, I've been stuck in the middle of nowhere when my crappily rebuilt alternator gave up, I bounced around an empty parking lot like a frog with parkinsons while learning to drive stick in it, I've pushed it hard enough to hear air getting between the windows and the weather stripping, I've drifted in it by accident because it lacks traction control and I have worn out tires, i've learned to work on cars with it, i've experienced all these great things that I'm going to carry with me as fond memories for the rest of my life. Its got imperfections, but its 100% mine, and I love it. I've always liked cars, but my little underpowered wannabe muscle car made me love cars. You get it Mr. Regular, you get it.
@@derekj.tejeda267 exactly. I just got my first car, an 08 acura tl. It creaks, lots of the plastics and seals are fucked up. The v6 doesn't produce as much hp or get as good mpg as a turboed 4 banger, but I still love it. Simple to fix too.
Had a 2002 4dr civic ex-g with sport package that was the only way you could get 15" 5*2 spoke made also by enkie. I still have them, mint never seen snow or salt up here in Canada. They cost 1000.00 to replace one rim in 2002. Wish I would have kept the ground effects when I got rid of the car
@@puffnpluky76 I did tires on a late model odyssey and when I was scrapping off the sticky weights I saw the wheels were Enkei wheels and was extremely surprised
"Today we spend less time experiencing memories and more time editing them..." This why I love this channel. Between all the jokes there is always so much truth and actual depth to the show.
Makes sense. They cut so much out of everywhere else that they were able to splurge a bit for better fuel economy where it matters. And there's an adage I learned from racing 1/8th scale buggies - one gram of rotational weight is roughly equal to two grams of static weight. There's no sense not to go with the lighter rims if it means better performance or fuel economy.
These were the sought after trim & rim combo in the drag racing scene. It had less soundproofing & other weight-deletions that the drag car will eventually go. I think this is why you enjoyed every bump in the road! Cause every bump had that tension of “rigid-yet-smooth” from that Honda double-wishbone suspension ❤️ Well done review… you seem like it had an existential change on you!
I have an all original red 1994 VX, (looks just like video) with 323,000 miles on it & original clutch & engine. I bought it with 92k in 2002. Still drive it 45mi each way to work every day. I recently tuned it up, put synthetic oil, running super unleaded, & removed the A/C belt & it's running better than ever. Has some oil leaks of course, but not that bad. I'm shooting for 500,000mi if possible. Even installed a Bluetooth stereo :) The 1994 VX was factory rated at 51mpg while the 1995 was 55mpg. Don't believe those numbers folks. You can get _MORE_ depending upon your driving habits. If you drive 50-60 mph, you can get 60+ mpg!! I've personally seen 57mpg out of my 1994. There are internet stories of people getting up to 75mpg with a couple mods. Besides the tremendous mileage, you'd be amazed what fits in the car. It actually seats 5 adults more comfortably than newer cars I've been in. There is tons of leg room in the back. The space in the hatchback is incredible. I used to load it up with tons of stuff to go work on properties & helping friends move, who couldn't believe how much fit in there. I love my car and refuse to sell it, no matter how many friends tell me to get rid of it. Still get offers for it on the street. I've got an Audi A3, 88 Porsche Targa, & a motorcycle, but will keep the Civic till it dies..or I do! The Civic was bought to replace my 3-cylinder Daihatsu hatchback (43mpg) that wouldn't pass smog, which was another fantastic car one notch below the VX. The A3 was bought to replace the VX, thinking it had it, but has been 4 years...still going. I've rattled my brain for years wondering WHY..WHY...WHY can they not make a car like this again? This car is over 20 years old and we've had numerous technology advancements since. It's all crap if they have to resort to funky hybrids that barely match the numbers of the VX. Sorry, but there is no excuse. Recently, car makers have started releasing small cars that get MPG in the low 40's, which is still a joke. Incidentally, the 1994/95 VX was rated in the top 5 most gas efficient cars of all time. It actually has been mentioned in recent articles where the author complained that some of today's hybrids can't even match the mid-90's VX.
I used to have a '89 civic. It was still running like a clock when I sold it at 367k miles. Glad to hear that your civic have no problem racking up miles. You should consider making a video if it reaches 500k. Good luck!
The biggest problem is safety, and the fact that manufactures don't want to risk putting out a car that might make the brand look cheap. I'm from America, and here (Not sure about other countries) image is everything. Being seen in an old or even slightly aging car isn't fashionable or it doesn't feed the 'successful' image that almost every non-car guy American wants to be seen as. I have a '99 Civic and I get constant reminders from my family and friends that it's old and stuff like "You're still driving it?" or my family (Who work for Ford and always were spoiled with new cars and fancy lease deals) outright refusing to ride in my car (Such as to go somewhere) because of how old and "Unsafe" it is. My old Hatch got totaled when some chick in a newer Malibu was texting and crossed the center line. Considering I own another Civic (a 6th gen) I was alright. The bitch texting was fine faced no issues other than crying because she totaled daddy's car, and I was hauled to the hospital because of the condition my car was in, but I was completely fine other than neck stiffness. I get that these cars aren't as safe as modern cars, but when you need crash protection at a high speed accident and don't want the modern BS such as computerized everything in modern computers, a 6th gen Civic is a great choice.
Fubar Garage I can't stand people who glue their face to their phone while they're driving. It pisses me off that they don't care about themselves or others enough to pay attention to the road.
Those alloys were actually standard for the VX. They were used because they were lighter than the standard steelies. Therefore; better mileage. It was also one notch ABOVE base. It had 22 more hp than the base "CX" model, as well as an 8k tach with a 6k redline, plastic bits on the underside to improve the aerodynamics, aluminum alternator bracket, aluminum driver-side engine mount, as well as a lightweight crank pulley. But both the CX and VX had an interesting feature which was a little shift light that told you when to shift for the best gas mileage.
Bavarian Banshee This car was part of my childhood, my dad had a purple one of these, same year and engine and probably the same trim. Our last car was a 99 Civic with a D15Z6 engine that looked exactly like this cars one, even down to the engine mounts and air filter box. It had a little "Econo" light on the dashboard that made you feel better and power windows. Just a car that was great at being a car. I want another 90s civic. Side note, at the time my dad had a purple Civic my mum had a Volvo 480 with POP UP HEADLIGHTS which was the best thing ever when you're 8 years old.
I don't think it had 22 more ponies. I believe it had 105hp and cx had 115 and si had 126. Cx had vinyl seats and the passenger side exterior mirror and side body mouldings were options
Dear Mr Regular, My friend bought this very car (well, the 75hp EX model, because EUROPE) last year. I now drive it everyday to work, because my 140hp Volvo C30 is being repaired. You brougth a tear to my eye, because you're right in every point about this car. It's fun, it's light, it's bare bones and is a pleasure to daily drive. I love you.
This is the video that taught me that speed, looks, and price are not the defining feature of a great car. It's the experience of driving and working on it.
I can say you definitely pointed out all the reasons I only really buy late 80s early 90s Japanese cars. They just feel like the perfect cars to me and I don't need or want all the extra stuff that comes on newer cars. I like old American stuff as well but after owning one I got my fix.
1990s cars are becoming more popular because all the reasons he has discibed. The number one complaint about new cars now are the infotainment center etc.
MotorMouth93 back in the day those wheels were hot. Hot like stolen off every VX. lightweight means less wheel mass Which means faster times. oh and the bodies where hot too. no option means less weight and easier to strip for track after you swap in a b series.
Every video like this makes the rest of youtube look garish and trivial. This video should be placed into a time capsule; preserved for future generations. Thank you.
why do we need triple exhausts, fake air vents and edgy-complex design on the 2017 civic type R when a 1995 civic sir looks cool with such a simple design.
Hello There yeah, I dont have this version in Europe And on most popular website with used cars there are only 30civic V gen Its like nothing, 2 are crashed, 4 is from england And other 3 have automatic gearbox Rest is meh or poorly modded
Mr. Regular, Roman, and co., You group have inspired me, my life, and my soul because of your great works, I listen to your videos every day, even if I already watched the videos, I listen to them by ear as how you guys do your reviews because they give me knowledge in a way like poetry, pleasant to hear and entertaining for hours on end. Monday's are never the same for me ever since I heard of RCR. keep rolling on strong fellas!
I'm sure it could with proper care. Same thing goes for a great many cars, really. As for rust, spray it with Fluid Film. It'll at least make some sort of difference getting rust-prone surfaces coated in an oily substance.
Yep. I had a 93 CX. Bought with over 100k miles and less than 10 years old. By the time it hit the decade mark it was going through about a quart with each fill up.
@@KS-xo3oh the only problem with the R18 is the cracked block issues that were fixed under warranty. The 8th gen civic had some transmission issues but the engine was solid. I drove one for almost a decade and had zero problems
Gordon Freeman There is some truth to your statement. I owned a new 1991 Civic Si and a 1994 Civic Si and both of those cars made you feel like you were getting more for your money than you really spent.
I wish I could have a hatchback in a manual as my daily. Everyone I tell that to doesn't understand. They think bigger trucks and SUVs are better. Which, yeah, you have good crash protection and ground clearance, maybe even comfort. But a hatchback doesn't have to be uncomfortable. And they aren't meant for off road. And if everyone would put their eyes on the road instead of their phone, well, the roads would be safer.
Well said, when i was looking for another car, everybody was fucking HELL BENT on getting me to get a tiny sport car or a SUV, but i would immediately flock to the big old 90s sedan or an old hatchback.
If you want the spirit of this car in a manual hatchback, I’m super happy with my 08 Yaris and they are cheap, easy to find, and indestructible, even if their manual isn’t hard linkages so it’s a little more vague than the Honda manuals, but it’s waaaaay easier to find in good shape and also get 45 mpg if you don’t drive like a complete sociopath
(old comment, yay) Get a manual Fit, it's so similar it's almost funny. Even the new ones are 90s Hondas disguised as modern cars. Low power, lightweight, good manual, decent handling. Only problem is that it looks like a minivan, lol.
In 1996, I was 25 y.o. and bought a 6th Gen Civic DX hatchback brand new. My purchase was based on my needs at the time: fuel efficiency and cost. My '96 hatchback was red, 5 speed manual, no power windows, no a/c... just as bare bones as this '95 video. Such great memories. I sold it in '15 and it's in good hands. Thanks, Mr. Regular and The Roman.
We called it 260 or 460 AC, 2/4 windows down and doing 60 MPH. Which reminds me, remember when 55 MPH was considered "fast" and 65 or 70 MPH was almost OMG fast? I can still remember doing 75 MPH for the first time, thought I was going to die. Now, I do 75-80 MPH almost dailey, in town, on 2 lane highways. Oh how times have changed.
Jamie Williamson Move North. 104 on the way to work should be a radio station. Rent a car with a/c when you go back to visit your people living in a hot traffic jam.
Sums up 90's Hondas perfectly. If you have never experienced a 90's Civic/integra then you must do yourself a favor and try it. Not fast at all, but might be the most fun you will have in a car with under 150hp. I recommend a Civic SI, Del Sol with the B16, or the integra GSR!
I'm becoming scared to watch RCR anymore. It seems like every few videos Mr. Regular makes you question your existence. Cars are time capsules more than anything else I can think of, highlighting the passage of time.
I’ve been seeing this channel pop up for months without actually visiting it. Boy am I glad I did. Everything you said about how simple this car is, but it’s yours, you own it and the memories you make with it are unique. This is EXACTLY why I’m a car guy. More specifically an OLD car guy. Everything now is engineered to boring perfection. You don’t get that thrill of working out a dodgy repair on the side of the road with your mini tool box you keep in the boot anymore.
Philip Rosenthale yup, I have a 92 civic si hatch, red like this one. 382 000 kms on but still runs great. I checked my fuel mileage last week, 291 kms on 17 litres of fuel works out to 3.8 gallons to 180 miles. 46 miles per gallon combined city highway driving. Not too shabby
Why CAN'T they make a car like this again? Why CAN'T they take a risk and put a woefully underpowered motor in a lighter car with all the safety requirements, but nothing else. Why CAN'T they sell a car with actual manual windows and mirrors? Why do we NEED the cheapest car to do 0-60 in 8 seconds, and seat 5? Why not put the money into the extremely efficient motor with a very generous gearing and diff ratio. Why CAN'T we have a regular NA motor deliver 70mpg? Answer? Because the American consumer cares more about dual zone HVAC and how big the LCD screen in the gauge cluster is, and how many ways the passenger seat is power adjustable, and if it's got a WiFi hotspot so all their 4 year old's digital devices will connect so they will shut the hell up on the 40 minutes it takes to drive them to daycare in the morning. And, yeah... the answer is always Miata.
goodeggpro The closest I've come is my base model '07 Cobalt. No power windows, no power locks, no power mirrors, no power seats, manual transmission, no abs, no cruise control... I do get air conditioning, power steering, and an aux jack... and airbags. I don't think you could find something like that on a car lot today.
I love how thought provoking and thorough these review are. Halfway through dude blows my mind with how he connects our liberated younger times to our current all-too-connected times. Really insightful.
0:12 meanwhile, i am daily driving my miata with snow tires in massachusetts and have driven through two snow storms the miata is a better winter daily than most cars, actually, EXTREMELY fun
nope! Bone stock miata. although putting a small plow on it is an interesting idea, i think you can buy light weight plows designed for easily putting on and taking off.
This episode brought me far more joy than it probably should have. I am generally not a “Honda person” but this is the first one I liked. It’s nostalgia. It’s those memories of fantasies of freedom. It’s trash, and perfect at the same time, which is next to impossible to find now. Thank you for this 🙏🏽
*I just cryed inside* you and I were in the same grade same year and my mom had one of these. Times were SOOOOO different man but it was when I had my first fight as a kid, when I first rode "the bus home", wow man you Make the Most Amazing RCR VIDEOS in the history of "Me". I appreciate you man so much ❤️💙💗 for you just being you. I was born in 1984, and in 1995 I was 11 and man o man this really took me back, and made me think about "the good ole days''.
...and the only one you ever seem to need... ...and the only one you can't seem to find when you need it... ...and the only one you'll pay $4 or more for to get just the one just to avoid buying a whole 'nother set...
Mr. Regular: your narration of the hypothetical experience of owning a car like this brought a tear or two to my eyes. I've not seen that many of your videos since I subscribed, but I can safely say this is my favorite because of that segment about memories. I have a 96 Ford Ranger that's been in my possession for over 20 years and for the last year it's remained idle because I can't really afford to run it anymore and have contemplated getting rid of it. But I know that the day that happens I'm gonna bawl like a baby because of all the memories I have with that truck. I feel so sorry for kids today because they're never going to experience things like we did growing up and how 25 years ago things were so much simpler. Thank you for this video Mr. Regular! And to the 245 people who thumbed down this video, please do humanity as a whole a favor, and go play in traffic till the expected desired result occurs.
One of your best reviews, hands down. I’m only a year older than yourself so hearing you break down the difference between now and 1995 is audible gold to my ears. I wax nostalgic while feeling wiser because I know how to use a map. Thank you for this. Keep up the good work.
My friend bought a 92 VX and it has air con!!! It amazed me to see an AC compressor but have no power steering. Previous owner installed new suspension in the rear (with nice gold control arms and new trailing arm bushings), new clutch, dual core aluminum rad, and a red mugen valve cover. Made me come back to this video to remember some of the minute details like the two piece hatch.
An unmodified old Civic (or crx) is much more interesting than a modded one. Somehow there is more passion in its raw simplicity than in bodykits and exhausts.
I could never own an early-mid 90s Japanese compacts without tastefully modifying it in subtle ways. I can't own anything without personalizing it in some way.
I wouldn't be so sure that those numbers are overly-optimistic. Old cars could pull phenomenal gas mileage if you tried. For example, '84 RX7 claimed it could get 29 MPG Highway from factory and I have matched that claim.
Bought my first car recently, its a '96 Civic Fastback with a mere 1.4l engine. I love every bit of it, especially when I drive the back roads and let it come to life, revving >7.000 RPM. Hondas were, and are, something special. I still can't wrap my head around the concept that the cars I saw in my childhood will soon be classics. I'm not even that old.
Honestly one the best videos I've seen. The whole philosophical part at the end really caught me off guard the first time I watched this video, and it still resonates when I watch it again. Experiencing life as it is should be more appreciated, and more experience should be made by making mistakes. Thanks for making this video. This is great stuff, maybe include more insight stuff like this in future videos. It really takes me back and makes me feel like I'm driving the car in that time period.
i had one just like this same year and model. 95 vx manual. i was the second owner and it was 100% mint on the inside. I spent weeks detailing it and also spent a chunk on a better than oem quality ppg paint job. it was the cleanest and sickest 92-95 hatch ive seen to this day. that little vtec-e that could was an epic reliable engine withe really good mpg. all i had on mine was a nice k&n intake, neuspeed springs and some good struts. stock everything else well besides a pioneer premier head unit and 2 rockford tens. was my teenage dream car and in high school it was a magnet for everything.. litttteraly. tickets, women, friends, racing, shit talking, haters, lovers, you name it.
LMAO classic car. How time flies. I'm rocking a late '91 EG ESI hatch with an sohc D16. My family bought it way before I got my license. I picked it as a kid because I liked how it looked and sounded. Best random decision I've made in my life. This one is black and has power steering too so it's a perfectly fine daily driver. Now that I think about it, these hatches are starting to rust into the ground and disappear from the roads. A few years and a nice one will be quite a head turner to anyone who knows about cars.
I've been lurking on your vids for a while but i'd like to say that its insanely buzzy how deep you got reviewing this car. I never got to grow up in the generation you grew up in but damn, I've never heard so much passion and fondness for such a period before. Your style of reviewing cars is awesome, I love how you can instill a personality to these vehicles and nail the kinds of emotions most petrolheads would feel towards the rides they see on the street. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your videos! Keep on keeping on good sir :D
I miss life outside of modern technology. Every day I'm considering throwing away my cellphone, but then I realise that I need it for work.. and because I don't have a landline. My car is also from 1995 by the way.
I already barely use my phone and only need it because of my job. I wish I could just get rid of it completely because I barely use it, and don't want to keep it either
10:59 I've always bristled at folks whining about getting triggered, but oh my gosh did I feel a wave of frustration welling up at the mention of losing a 10mm socket. I can just hear it clinking its way down into the abyss.
Worst part of this video is now this civic price has sky rocketed thanks to Mr. Regular, expect to see craigslist postings that say "no rush to sell I know what I have" Also those rims are from a Honda civic hx.
Javier Molina this model has always had a higher used price because of people that want a economical car. even the crx Hf has skyrocketed in price too.
Not really here in my neck of the woods, I've found the HX model crx's going for $2,500, I just found a civic vx on Craigslist just a few minutes ago selling for $1,000 but looks to be modified a bit and the motor looks to be swapped out too.
Javier Molina yeah the vx model are highly sought after because they have a lot of lightweight suspension parts and they are the lightest of all the 5th gen civics.
touge volvo85 I'll stick to my SAAB, at the end of the day stock or not it's a Honda it will still get stolen or attempt to get stolen/broken into by someone, I don't have the issue with my 93.
My grandmother had one, bought brand new in 95. She passed it down to my mother in 2002. Mom drove it until 2010 until it gave out!! Great car. Holds alot of memories
I miss road map books. There was something fulfilling about looking in that appendix, finding the street you need AND in the correct suburb, finding the page and coordinates and using this knowledge to find out where you're going.
Dude your description of nostalgia throughout the vid gave me the mad feels. Weird how a car review channel can make me laugh and mourn the loss of youth, not in a negative way, but rather remembering yourself and the world as something wild and free while contrasting your current life of responsibility and restraint.
Lot of incorrect info here, but happy you did a video on the VX! First, the VX was NOT the base model EH2 hatch, the CX was. Actually depending on where you lived in the US it was either the second most expensive (to the si hatch) or the most expensive usually coming in around 11,500-13,500k originally depending on if you had A/C or not which was an option as well as rear speakers, with the si coming in between 12,500-13,800 depending on if you opted for abs or not and rear speakers. Now some VX corrections: 1.Those wheels are specific to the VX and are 13” lightest honda wheels ever made. In fact they grew an inch for the HF civic coupe in the next generation but design was the same. They didn’t use steel wheels because or rotational mass reduction with an alloy to help achieve that amazing mpg. 2. They get far better mpg than the 48-55 if you know how to drive it, and that’s without hypermiling. Mine would notoriously get 58-62 if kept in lean burn. 3. There is a shift light that uses vacuum to help you determine when to maximize your mpg. The engine was designed with lean burn and enriched burn technology. Under 2400/2500 rpms you are in lean burn, above you are in enriched burn with VTEC kicking in higher in the rpm band. 4. This is the second slowest eg/eh2 hatch, the pecking order is as follows for the hatches in terms of speed castes to slowest. Si, DX, VX, CX 5. This is one of the rarest civics ever made and the lightest eh hatch out of the batch so finding a clean one is like winning the lottery. Most were the choice for swappers because they were the lightest 6. They were super safe, and still are today. I hit a tree head on at 60mph (thanks minivan mom on her cell phone running me off road) rolled 2 times once rams landed upside down in a creek and my 24 year old airbags still deployed! (94-95 hatches all had passenger airbags standard). I walked away with a bloody nose that’s it. These things were built tough for a little hatch, I would argue safer than any new little car.
I really appreciate the information andrew! I have 1992 vx myself as a first car and so thankful that it is a vx. Ive been planning to modify the suspension and get bigger wheels( both already i bought) but after reading this and watching this rcr video I think I'll just get another hatchback and use it as you rather messing with my stock baby girl. Now if you could tell me i should drive it or how to learn more about lean burn i would appreciate it... For some reason my dash doesnt have the eco light sensor telling you when to shift
Wow. That rant gave me goosebumps. And about choked me up on all my own memories. And it’s why I own a 98 civic hatch even today. I’m now 43 years old and I don’t want to believe it. Shit, it was so different in 95. Just made me remember how much better life was. Having to go to the store to buy music and videos and listening to ska punk. That was an unsuspecting emotional journey while watching a video bout a Honda Civic. amazing job. Thank you for that.
It wasn't until the most recent model that the Prius actually managed to reach this level of efficiency. Earlier Priuses were stuck in the low to mid 40s. And even the modern Prius can't do that while also providing an actually fun, engaging driving experience.
Best car I ever had a 1992 Civic VX. Those wheels are correct stock. Had them on mine. They were special lightweight rims. also the trans was geared special to get the MPG"s. I once got 800 miles on a tank grannying it!!!
I concur and was about to comment that those are stock VX wheels. I don't think they were used on any other model and would now be considered very rare.
man i keep coming back to this video, but not because of the civic but because of your soothing nostalgic talk about the 90s, dude... this is amazing, thank you so much for this
This an old video but man. Spot on. The first car I ever bought with my own cash, not gifted and repaid or financed or borrowed was my 1995 Honda Civic EJ coupe. It was my first manual transmission, no abs. No tachometer. No power steering. No AC (it was equipped but the r12 was done) aI think it had a blown head gasket, but still could get up to 120. I had to wire the AC fan to blow to help make the trip on my 45 mile commute. I still got phenomenal gas mileage. I never crashed it, but I did have a bad tire blow out on me on my way to work stranding me on a California interstate for a sec, though when I went to get to my scissor jack a patrol truck helped me out. The tire blew off a piece of my bumper. I loved that car to death. I got regular washes and waxes for it from my work garage. I miss that car every day. I miss driving stick. I yearn for another unmolested Civic every day. If you have the opportunity to buy one, please do. Thanks for this memory RCR.

Years ago I remember an friendly elderly customer With A shiny red 2 door ford maverick. 1 owner minty fresh, red whit gray black plaid seats.
Early-mid 90s Japanese compacts/sports cars are simply some of the best cars ever manufactured. Something magical about them. Small, affordable, reliable, cleanly styled, well engineered cars, and they often don't even need to be fast in order to be desirable and fun to drive!
I'd love one for all of those reasons.

Toyota: Our Prius gets amazing miles per gallon
Honda: *coughing* We did it better with a econobox about 20 years ago
Hell, even Toyota’s econoboxes 20-25 years ago got better mileage than a Prius. But for the same reasons: no weight, no safety, no features, and a tiny little engine connected to a five-speed manual.
Source on the mileage? Toyota lied, did Honda?
@@andrewwalker9960 It's really emission requirements that explain the differences in economy, not so much the weight. The VTEC-E is extremely lean burning, so it has tons of nasty emissions, especially NOx. You cannot sell an engine like this now days, it's too dirty, especially on a local pollution level, the pollutants tend to stay low to the ground, so people breath them in. It's like the worst combination of gasoline engine emissions, and diesel engine emissions.
MPG are lies.
This vid made me buy a 96 civic hatch, I love that thing like I love my mama.

I have a 1992 Civic VX, white, that I bought brand new and it is still my daily driver. 504,000 miles on it, still looks great, no rust, fun to drive.
Kenneth Hausmann um 504,000 miles?? im calling bull. 300k is amazing and 400k is impossible, but 504k?
Joshua Schulz my 2003 crown vic p71 has 678k miles on it and it's still running strong
Joshua Schulz it's not impossible, there's been a handful of cars that have made it to one million. And on a Honda like this? I don't doubt 500k. My friend is a huge Honda enthusiast as is his whole family and he said his kids first car will be a 95 Civic with 600k miles haha
Joshua Schulz my neighbor has a 1988 VW Jetta GLI 5-speed with 408,000 miles and its still got so much left in it.
This can exist. A carbon fiber car with 100 hp, at least $70,000.
@@psikot
How about aluminum-reinforced ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene for $30,000? Won't be as rigid, but if you only care about lightness it'll do the job and then some. Same stuff that they use for NASCAR crash bumpers.
@@VestedUTuber Source on the price and strength?

Extremely loose ballpark estimates.
This is one of the most philosophically beautiful car video I've ever, and probably will ever watch. For that, Mr. Regular, I thank you.

This video was absolutely perfect. From the music to the review. This is easily my favorite video you've ever made, Mr.RCR. Thank you.
You hardly have to have a job if you own one of these. So cheap to drive and fix. I think I spent a total of $17 the last 2 times my car broke down, combined over like 4 years. I drove mine for 21 years and it currently has 585,000 miles on it.
Honda mileage club?
These were from that one moment in time where corporate interests and human interests somehow aligned. I bought a 1992 Nissan 2WD pickup for $1100, drove it seven years changing only the fluids then sold it for $1100. That object was at least as helpful to me making my way in life as any single person I've ever known.
john4kc how many miles now
@@Gamer-db6xp It's been parked for the last few years since my grandma passed her 1997 Civic Ex to me. The mileage hasn't changed. The body and floor were so rusty that even though it ran like a dream, I didn't want to fall through someday. It was kinda rough looking where this '97 looks like it's still new.
john4kc are u gonna restore it?
As a driver of a EH hatch, this video nails the feeling of the whole car perfectly. It is the perfect incarnation of everything we want to remember 90s cars for, and is pure bliss to drive. Can't be mad in one, since there's nothing to be mad at. One of the best cars Honda ever made, and I have yet to find a car that embodies its sense of pure joy better.
Mneh I really want to get one, but I'm really scared about it getting stolen. Have you had any problems with that?

Fun fact, the VX's alloy rims were made by Enkei specifically for the VX, they didn't come on any other Honda.
Enkei makes all of hondas oem wheels along with many other car brands
Had a 2002 4dr civic ex-g with sport package that was the only way you could get 15" 5*2 spoke made also by enkie. I still have them, mint never seen snow or salt up here in Canada. They cost 1000.00 to replace one rim in 2002. Wish I would have kept the ground effects when I got rid of the car
Suboptimus Lime they weigh 6 lbs a piece
@@puffnpluky76 I did tires on a late model odyssey and when I was scrapping off the sticky weights I saw the wheels were Enkei wheels and was extremely surprised
They may not have been the exact same, I don’t know for sure, but the Civic HX (the fuel efficient trim of the sixth generation) had those wheels
"Today we spend less time experiencing memories and more time editing them..." This why I love this channel. Between all the jokes there is always so much truth and actual depth to the show.
So i did some research: turns out the VX EH2 did in fact come standard with alloy rims.
@Christopher White just 9 lbs! i once had a ef hatch i put a set of them on. they also came on the later civic hx in 14". still only 11 lbs
@@stussels every ounce counts for fuel economy
Makes sense. They cut so much out of everywhere else that they were able to splurge a bit for better fuel economy where it matters. And there's an adage I learned from racing 1/8th scale buggies - one gram of rotational weight is roughly equal to two grams of static weight. There's no sense not to go with the lighter rims if it means better performance or fuel economy.
Yep! Just like it’s semi-successor the HX.
These were the sought after trim & rim combo in the drag racing scene. It had less soundproofing & other weight-deletions that the drag car will eventually go. I think this is why you enjoyed every bump in the road! Cause every bump had that tension of “rigid-yet-smooth” from that Honda double-wishbone suspension ❤️
Well done review… you seem like it had an existential change on you!
Even installed a Bluetooth stereo :)
The 1994 VX was factory rated at 51mpg while the 1995 was 55mpg.
Good luck!
sabunassar You deserve a lot more likes for this comment.

But both the CX and VX had an interesting feature which was a little shift light that told you when to shift for the best gas mileage.
and ill add those wheels only weigh about 8 lbs. each. specific for the vx and reduced unsprung weight. i put a set on my ef hatch.
Nancy. DX(EG3) had 75, VEi(EH2) had 90, ESi(Si) had 125, VTi(poor americans never had it) had 160 hp
Does the cx and vx models use the same transmission?
Dear Mr Regular,

isn't the european EG3 called DX?
This is the video that taught me that speed, looks, and price are not the defining feature of a great car.
It's the experience of driving and working on it.
I can say you definitely pointed out all the reasons I only really buy late 80s early 90s Japanese cars. They just feel like the perfect cars to me and I don't need or want all the extra stuff that comes on newer cars. I like old American stuff as well but after owning one I got my fix.
1990s cars are becoming more popular because all the reasons he has discibed. The number one complaint about new cars now are the infotainment center etc.

Those are the original VX wheels. They used those alloys because they were super light compared to steelies.
MotorMouth93 back in the day those wheels were hot. Hot like stolen off every VX. lightweight means less wheel mass Which means faster times.
oh and the bodies where hot too. no option means less weight and easier to strip for track after you swap in a b series.

Bro come to Europe
If you want the spirit of this car in a manual hatchback, I’m super happy with my 08 Yaris and they are cheap, easy to find, and indestructible, even if their manual isn’t hard linkages so it’s a little more vague than the Honda manuals, but it’s waaaaay easier to find in good shape and also get 45 mpg if you don’t drive like a complete sociopath
(old comment, yay)
Get a manual Fit, it's so similar it's almost funny. Even the new ones are 90s Hondas disguised as modern cars. Low power, lightweight, good manual, decent handling. Only problem is that it looks like a minivan, lol.
@@LazerLord10 That's fine. Still all right. Only issue with the fit is that they can't really be tuned or swapped. Also worse build quality
I see nothing of value was lost when I got rid of cable 15 years ago.
ahhhh i just bought a 94 because of this video and i absolutely adore it

Manual steering is best steering. Hot in summer open window manually and drive faster.
I miss quarter windows and the extra protein
Kuddlesworth NA I just bought a 97 Toyota starlet with mechanical steering :D
Jamie Williamson Move North. 104 on the way to work should be a radio station. Rent a car with a/c when you go back to visit your people living in a hot traffic jam.
my saturn doesnt have power steering more power for me
Sums up 90's Hondas perfectly. If you have never experienced a 90's Civic/integra then you must do yourself a favor and try it. Not fast at all, but might be the most fun you will have in a car with under 150hp. I recommend a Civic SI, Del Sol with the B16, or the integra GSR!
Shawn Viveiros (cough,cough) Miata(cough)
Matthew Trent yes yes yes the answer is always miata
I've always found it strange the ITR's are so rare over there. Here (Norway/Europe) they are way more common than the GSR's.
I'm becoming scared to watch RCR anymore. It seems like every few videos Mr. Regular makes you question your existence.
Cars are time capsules more than anything else I can think of, highlighting the passage of time.
Now that he's a full timer, all he does is question his existence while sitting at home alone. Winter doesn't help either.
Dude's getting Morose.
"...and that's ok"
You may not remember where you lived, but you remember what you drove. I still miss my little shitbox, all the memories made in it.
You don’t get that thrill of working out a dodgy repair on the side of the road with your mini tool box you keep in the boot anymore.
mr regular has changed me. i would now be more excited about this than most of the sports cars i regularly see now
also oh god yes paper maps
Same thing with me lol. I met a guy with a bone stock EH hatch and we had like a half hour conversation about how hard to find they are stock
So great I had to watch it again. Old Honda's are incredible.
And, yeah... the answer is always Miata.
goodeggpro they do it's called the Nissan Versa. Ugly as shit, but that thing has NOTHING in it. Well the base line anyways
Sure... it's cheap and it's bare bones, but it still ONLY gets 39HWY mpg. I get that in my 2016 Miata. There MUST be a way to do better.
don't forget the mitsubishi mirage
goodeggpro Metal weight a lot, and there are a LOT of pedestrian and rollover safety requirements that need reinforcements.
goodeggpro The closest I've come is my base model '07 Cobalt.
Really insightful.

meanwhile, i am daily driving my miata with snow tires in massachusetts and have driven through two snow storms
the miata is a better winter daily than most cars, actually, EXTREMELY fun
is it stanced, with tire chains on the back and a snow plow on the front?? LOLOLOL
nope! Bone stock miata.
although putting a small plow on it is an interesting idea, i think you can buy light weight plows designed for easily putting on and taking off.
Being from Europe I don't understand the concept of having any sort of snowfall or sub-zero temperatures and NOT having winter tyres.
people in america get some big lumbering all wheel drive tank and put crappy all season tires on it thinking awd will automatically save them
All season tires, that are most popular here in the US, are just fine for light snow.
This episode brought me far more joy than it probably should have. I am generally not a “Honda person” but this is the first one I liked. It’s nostalgia. It’s those memories of fantasies of freedom. It’s trash, and perfect at the same time, which is next to impossible to find now. Thank you for this 🙏🏽
Your rant about the good ole days (our time...mid 90s) made me cry inside.
*I just cryed inside* you and I were in the same grade same year and my mom had one of these. "Memories are just failures we look back on with fondness because enough time has passed"
Most amazing and deep videos I have seen on the Internet.
I got a 01’ manual and I love this car. Everything is stock and simple. Love it!!
hey man, I just got 1996 Civic hatch CX and you made me appreciate it 100x more than I already did. thank you for your awesome video
One of your best reviews, hands down. I’m only a year older than yourself so hearing you break down the difference between now and 1995 is audible gold to my ears. I wax nostalgic while feeling wiser because I know how to use a map. Thank you for this. Keep up the good work.
This is my trusty daily, best money I've spent on a car.
I’ve watched a lot of RCR but I think this one perfectly sums up what I love about cars
Perfect Canadian car, the EH2! Get it??? It says eh...
I'll show myself out.
nice one
I laughed.
Chris Pederson That was gold.
you're not wrong! Back in the day, these things with snow tires were everywhere in my town! The perfect car, indeed. Holy crap it burns no gas!
maluorno they’re still everywhere on the west coast of B.C. I have on and I see lots around on a daily basis
This is one of my favourite regular car reviews just for the nostalgia aesthetic that was captured so well
An unmodified old Civic (or crx) is much more interesting than a modded one. Somehow there is more passion in its raw simplicity than in bodykits and exhausts.
I could never own an early-mid 90s Japanese compacts without tastefully modifying it in subtle ways. I can't own anything without personalizing it in some way.
Only Mr Regular can get me to watch a 90s civic hatch review. 55mpg?!
yeah these numbers are really optimistic. In the real world this car gets about 40mpg highway and 32 city.
Mojo it still has more heart and soul than a prius
Pre-2008 EPA fuel economy estimates were a little generous sometimes.
I wouldn't be so sure that those numbers are overly-optimistic. Old cars could pull phenomenal gas mileage if you tried.
For example, '84 RX7 claimed it could get 29 MPG Highway from factory and I have matched that claim.
Right, it would be more like 50pmg these days. Still great.
You made me think back to the 90's .. Best years of my life and at the time I did not even know it.. I miss the 90's

This makes me nostalgic for something I’ve never owned. The absolute beauty of hatches
Wow, 25 years. Drove to New York from Toronto in a 95 civic to see one of the first Dead shows post Gerry!
This is THE ShingoMobile.
Lucky guy. I'm saving up for the VTi.
I recently spent $1000 fixing the rust on mine. Best $1000 I ever spent.
Javier Molina yea same here with my Volvo.
Brilliant writer, brilliant observations.
Those are the correct wheels, honda used alloy's because they weighed less than the steelies.
A lot less. They're less than 10 lbs each!
which adds to the great MPG
Dude your description of nostalgia throughout the vid gave me the mad feels. Weird how a car review channel can make me laugh and mourn the loss of youth, not in a negative way, but rather remembering yourself and the world as something wild and free while contrasting your current life of responsibility and restraint.
BLIND MELON : NO RAIN ❤️
Tommy Siro wooooow we get it...you know the song too
Yes! SO MUCH 90'S. Lovely poignant ending, as always. It makes me happy seeing this car completely stock. Also, the Foo Fighters can't touch Nirvana.
Now some VX corrections:
1.Those wheels are specific to the VX and are 13” lightest honda wheels ever made.
Si, DX, VX, CX
5. This is one of the rarest civics ever made and the lightest eh hatch out of the batch so finding a clean one is like winning the lottery. Most were the choice for swappers because they were the lightest
"48 MPG city, 55 MPG highway. No Prius could do this."
What
WolfireGaming off just pure gasoline
It wasn't until the most recent model that the Prius actually managed to reach this level of efficiency. Earlier Priuses were stuck in the low to mid 40s.
And even the modern Prius can't do that while also providing an actually fun, engaging driving experience.
Best car I ever had a 1992 Civic VX. Those wheels are correct stock. Had them on mine. They were special lightweight rims. also the trans was geared special to get the MPG"s. I once got 800 miles on a tank grannying it!!!
800...Jesus!! I've got a 1994 & have gotten 550, but only granny for partial tank. I should try again.
That was full of fuel all the way up the filler tube and hyper-mile and granny driving the whole tank. Rolled into the gas station on fumes I'm sure!
I concur and was about to comment that those are stock VX wheels. I don't think they were used on any other model and would now be considered very rare.
Any tips on driving a vx
"Today, we spend less time making memories, and more time editing them." ... amazing.
man i keep coming back to this video, but not because of the civic but because of your soothing nostalgic talk about the 90s, dude...
this is amazing, thank you so much for this

No, this EH is an economy trim level. The EF in this couldn't keep up to an 86, its more likely Shingo had a higher trim model EG6

Damn, I was born in 2001 and this video made me miss the 90's as if I was there then.
I remember paying $0.99 / gallon for regular gas in 1995
