I think that's one of the reasons I like WRXs, and especially STIs. The people who own an STI, even a clapped out, modded to death one, LOVE their cars. They might not even understand that love, and it might be a horrible Bobby Brown abusive "Lifetime Restraining Order" kind of love, but they love their STI. And in my mind, that's better then people who lease a base model Kia Soul because "Well, its cheap and I like being higher to see over traffic".

seriously. as hilarious and well intended as this review is, I'd rather drive this car due to its racing pedigree, I mean that's why people drive these cars and others like it. You don't need other's recognition to drive a car you truly appreciate and enjoy anyway
Maybe. I live in Illinois and it annoys a lot of people when you pronounce the "S". So I think I did that purposely to be funny and to upset people who live in Illinois.
It's like a $16-18k car the last time I was looking at them regularly, if that. Not exactly heinous, but definitely more than most 19 year olds should have. Still, there were kids at my high school driving new BMWs/Benzes while I was putting around in a car that had been pulled kicking and screaming from the 1980s. Seeing as the STi's only valued at maybe a sixth of what a lot of those kids got to drive, it's not too extreme. Shit, even the preppy girls who got new Corollas at the time were rolling around in wheels that were technically more valuable
techno.logic I went to high school with a kid whose dad bought him a brand new STI. He totaled it about a month later. For the rest of the school year he drove his dad's '78 Corvette pace car.
Come to Seattle, and check out Chinese UW students driving brand new Maseratis, Audi R8's, ///M3s and C63 AMGs that Mom and Dad got for them, when they probably never even got behind the wheel of any car before they came to the USA to study, its really absurd.
Fun Fact: Manufacturers that recall vehicles for corrosion in a salt belt states don't limit the recall to only those states. All states can and will perform the recall if the vehicle is believed to either come from a salt belt state or that may travel to a salt belt state at some point during the normal vehicle's lifetime, which is impossible to know for most vehicles. Also, that fact wasn't as fun as I anticipated.
@@Redmenace96 It's not an OJ reference. What he means is that even if though all of the stereotypes about the sti and the people that drive them and put gaudy ridiculous mods on them are true, that doesn't mean we cannot accept them as just other people that love cars and love working on them, albeit with different tastes. If the glove fits, ie. if they actually are an axe wearing dude-bro, we can still respect them and put forth an effort to understand what it is they love about the STI.
See the reason I want one of these is the World Rally Championship. When I was growing up I first saw these on TV driven by Petter Solberg and the like, I wanted one so bad. That idea lives on with me. I'd like to have a new one but the gas mileage is so bad I'd rather wait and buy a 997.
Lol, I had a sti (2004 in fact, way back in 2006) when I was 19 so I got a big ol pile of salt to watch this video with, but turns out I was an awesome 19 year apparently because I knew how to use google and not do all that stupid shit. I wasn't my first "fast" car at least and I loved the thing more than anything before or since. Fun fact, I sold it to a family who was buying it as one of their son's first cars. He wrecked it in 2 weeks. Very sadaru I also went the wingless route, turns out it makes a difference on the highway much to my surprise. The vertical fins seriously keep it straight at highway speeds. And you can definitely burn through 1st with very minor bolt ons safely ;). However, stock kind of sucks for all the reasons you mentioned. All you need is full exhaust + ~real actual tune~ and a gm solenoid and poof, you have a raw exciting responsive car. If you want a stock STi just buy a WRX, youre just wasting money. bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzrrrrrrrtttttttttttttttttttttt WATER IC SPRAYERRRRR
A stock sti is better than all these riced out stis. Everyone mods and kills it. I have a stock and I'm going to keep it that way. From New to 1million miles
YES PLS. I've been requesting this forever hahaha. I could say he could come to Canada to review mine, but that's not gonna happen so ya. Also Manual would be a better review.
A few years ago I bought my 02 WRX. The guy molested it pretty bad, and even had a box of various STI stickers he was getting ready to paste all over it. 4-5 years later and I'm STILL trying to get things the way they should.. he screwed it up that bad. Still trying to find a decently priced ac assembly, and the time to get the radio working. Also gotta take the time to get the backlight on the console working again. It runs decently after the recent 8 month engine rebuild project I did, but not quite where I think it should be. Next will be swapping out whatever injectors he haf with OEM ones and tuning the car.
Wow, this is pretty accurate. Someone I know had their STI handed to them by their parents, as well as ten thousand dollars to make it fast: rotated turbo kit, big injectors/ pump on e85, and other miscellaneous bits, and it only makes 390whp. My other friend who bought his STI straight out of pocket has tuned and worked his car to where its in the 400whp range without spending a crap ton on stupid parts. Just goes to show the wide range of STI owners out there. There are good ones and bad ones.
Anybody remember, in about 2004 when the STi first came to the US, Hot Rod Magazine did a cover story comparing it to the then new Mustang Cobra? The Terminator Cobra. The cover was a blue STi and a yellow Cobra. I was about 13 at the time and my dad worked at a Subaru dealer. From that point I've always wanted an STi.
I miss the old car culture. Nowadays it's all about what others think of your car and trying to stand out the most or going with the trend. I remember when people did it because they liked it, because they wanted to, not to show off to others. And I feel like car manufacturers are catering to this new type of car culture, which is why there hasn't really been anything quite new and exciting for quite a number of years...
Nate Pranaitis agreed 💯👌 it doesn't help that all modern cars 2010-present look all the same and they all look like fuckin space ships in the inside with all of the unnecessary gagets n buttons.
Wow this is crazy cause i was a senior in high school and actually did a report from that article. Made me want one so bad. Have always remembered that. About 8 years later i ended up with a 02 wrx. Yes it is modded and loud. But each and every time i drive it i have fun. That is what makes a car for me. Still want a 04 sti lol. One day maybe.
Kudos to the owner for fixing the shit mods. Also I for one like the styling of this car, wing and hood scoop and all. Its a bit visually loud but its still pretty conservative. Nowhere near as bad as the new Civics lmao.
Love your conclusion. This is the argument I brave whenever someone I know comments about MR BIG DICK taking off at the intersection. They're not compensating for anything, they're just having fun with something they love.
I saw the owner and said wait, the owner of this car is a 19 year old wearing a flat brimmed DC hat. Then you said the previous owner was a 19 year old. Yup, a 19 year old gets a WRX and what do they do? Jack it all up. Cue up the Mr. Regular voice "These parts say racing so I have to put them on my WRX and it will be the most bad ass WRX because it has racing parts!"
love it. you forgot that any of these winter-induced-recalls, like the one for RAW FUEL LEAKAGE ON COLD START TSB all took like another 5 months to be applied to CANADA. Yes! winter seasonal caused recalls were actioned and approved earlier south of the boarder! anyway, I have a stock looking bugeye and all the tweeners look at it as a blank canvas for their next pep boys visit...
I really hope it doesn't get infected with the S13 issue on having no more, or at the most, a handful of unmodified cars. As time goes on, it'll be impossible to find an unmodified Impreza of this age....kinda sad, though I can see why they get modified to insanity.
I work at pep boys, and before you make assumptions, I only buy oil from there, not useless aftermarket items. But in writing because there are way more middle aged -> older people that come in than teens. Places like pep boys / AutoZone / oreilleys are getting smaller by the year because they keep losing customers, however service and commercial departments do great.
That fuel leakage issue was a strange one - I had to pay the repair out of pocket (despite showing the dealership a copy of the TSB), and then a month later Subaru of America sends me a check reimbursing the cost of the repair. I was happy to be reimbursed, but why not just do the damn recall? Afraid of negative PR? It's not like I didn't have some 4 other recalls done already.
"ALL WHEEL DRIVE WILL DRIFT IF YOU TRY HARD ENOUGH" me and my friends scream in the high school parking lot Sunday night as we crowd around my friend's moms Audi A4
Opinions on aircraft like the Embraer really go to show that there's two types of flyers. Type 1: Doesn't really like or care for the act of flying, doesn't really trust airplanes, just wants it to be over as quick as possible. They see the Embraer as a rattly, cramped, piece of junk, much like a snooty businessman may look at a WRX. They'd rather fly in an expensive, "Safer" aircraft, like a Gulfstream. Or, if they're not fancy enough to fly in a private jet, at least something made by Boeing. Type 2: Thrill of the moment, seat of the pants type flyers. These guys, myself included, absolutely love flying. The acceleration, the roar of the engines, the buffeting of the wind against the aircrafts body panels. We don't care how long the flight is, we'll never be bored with flying. Especially on an aircraft like the Embraer. You don't sleep on an Embraer, you observe. You feel. You understand that you are traveling over 400 miles per hour, through air and clouds, and you enjoy it. You are connected. You're no longer just a passenger, you are part of the journey.
I bought a 2018 STI for the 3 LSD diffs, the analog feel, and the adjustable handling dynamics. Also the minimal to no computer intervention. And the 6 piston brembos. And they make awesome turbo noises and the engine sounds like a wookie climaxing inside of a pissed off hippopotamus. And EJ’s have always been reliable for me even up to 700whp.
I knew a kid who was given a (blue) WRX STI after getting his *learner's permit*. Fucking guy had Colin McRae's race car and my dream car as a birthday present. Rich parents, there ya go. Edit- OH, and that recall you mentioned DID affect the Forester. I know, because I unsuccessfully tried to get my mom to buy a WRX, and she ended up buying a Forester. It was later recalled for the very same control arm problem.
Darn rich-kids huh? lol. My wife's stepdad did the same thing when she turned 16. It wasn't a STI, but it was a brand new car. When I got my permit I got to go Walmart and get my own set of keys cut for my dad's Chev Celebrity lol. Which was still great....and all the freedom it let me have etc. But a WRX STI ???....😠💰 I have mega-rich 1st cousin's, and you wouldn't believe the shit they had or got to do growing up to today. My father was a factory worker so I understand all that 😠💰 shit.
Hey, those "gifts" usually end up as anchors later on in life, when it's up to the kid to go out and produce enough money to make their own way in life. Don't think you got short-changed because you had to work for what you own. I know I sure don't, my dad worked construction and my mom has her own business. Being able to buy my own brand new 2013 MX-5 Miata (nearly) outright was a dream come true for a middle class 20-something like me. Every time I get in that car, I look around and think "Yeah, this shit is fucking MINE." Fun fact- My high school buddy's sister was given a brand new RX-7 for getting her license. Her dumbass boyfriend totalled it, and it was replaced with an Audi A4 or A6 (I forget). Okay, that's not fun, but it IS true.
My apologies, RX-8. That awesome-looking suicide door coupe, last of the rotary engines. Edit- I was never in it, but you could tell it was about as close to a stripped-down track rocket as you could ever hope to see, apart from the MX-5...
Nah, man. He means it was recalled for anyone who tried to listen to Sufjan Stevens in it. Turns out the stock CD player hated that album and would express its displeasure by peeing on the control arm. Subaru makes weird cars.
Originally, it was Ill Annoy, but then the legislature was like "oh hell, nobody will come live here with that name, but.. oh, it's so catchy--let's re-write it in a way that looks like Le Franch so people will come here anyway".
I like STIs cause i like light weight, turbo 4cyl, awd, manuals. You wouldn't think that's a difficult checklist but in my experience its actually very difficult to get that in a visually appealing car
I bought my blue 2005 WRX on February 11th 2005 when I was 25 years old (my dad cosigned). This was my first NEW car. Of course, I wanted the WRX STI, but that was a little out of my price range. I still have the car today and it's my daily driver with only 61,000 miles on it after almost 15 years (I don't drive much). I have had to take it to the body shop once or twice because of other assholes, not my own accidents. It is completely stock (I had grand plans for it initially, but changed my mind). The car has been super reliable and I still enjoy driving it. I have had many people inquire about me selling it, but there is nothing out there in my price range that I really want right now. I do get 20+MPG routinely.
I've had two V6 6MT Accords (the "6-6" if you will). They're a lot of fun, and affordable for just about anyone. Bought the second last year for five grand with navigation. Please, please, do a review on one of these! Come to SLC and you can review mine, lol. But I do think it's one of the most understated and underdiscussed cars in the realm of "car people".
When I was in high school, the WRX STI made 300 horsepower and the Mustang GT made 260. I thought, "300 horse?! Wow that car is so advanced, so high tech. Nothing can compete with that." Then the Mustang made 300 horse, and the STI made what, 305? Bridging the gap... Now the Mustang makes 460 (!) and the STI makes...305.
The crazy thing is the current gen WRX STI (which has a lot of its edges smoothed out & rawness toned down) is still considered one of the most RAW new sport sedans money can buy at the current time. Yet, in the 2000s the STI was still more tame than something like the Neon SRT4 and LanEvo 9? If that doesn't speak to the current car culture of what constitutes as a "sport sedan", I honestly don't know what does.
My uncle bought the hawkeye subie, and he's kept it ridiculously well, unlike the plethora of 18 year Olds which destroyed theirs. He kept it stock too.
Cars are often dirty in places with snowy winters because a bunch of road grime and brake dust gets mixed into the snow. The grime stays on the car after the snow has melted and few people wash the grime off during the winter since it might end up snowing again really soon.
I just remembered why I started using LibreOffice when I was 19 . Nevermind that it's quirky as hell , the weird formats, and how some fonts just refuse to work on it. _I use free software , and that makes me smart! I visit /g , so I know computers!_
Yep any "budget" performance vehicle is going to have its quirks. However if cheap interiors are a let down or reason not to own a "performance" based car... then I would suggest the VW Golf R... yes while it may not be as fast as the STI, the build quality is bar none. Both are right around the same price new and used.
MasterMech77 I don't mind rattles. My impreza rattles more and more from the dirt and gravel I drive on. I really do love the GTI. I would consider one when I can afford it.
+Adam Steele OH I do understand the rattles. Out of all the vehicles I own, my top two are a nicely modified 2010 Mk6 Golf R, and a lightly modified Scion FRS. Both are my favorite "toys" but for completely different reasons and they are total opposites of each other. The FRS rattles like crazy from day one... but I love the way it drives, it is so light and nimble, not much power, but that means you can full throttle it everywhere and not go to jail the moment you do. It also gets sideways very easily and can stay that way even at very low speeds, so makes it one heck of a fun thing. The Golf R is heavy, powerful, all wheel drive, and very well made... it's fun to drive in a completely different way compared to the FRS.
rosie684 tried? he was involved with multiple cases- the one he got nailed for he convinced some roadie chick to bring her baby with her when they wen to have sex and did all kinds of stuff to it. love the music, but yeah, hard to enjoy it now.
Make no mistake. This is an awesome engine. I have an '04 Forester XT with the de-tuned version of this baby. I bought it new as a left over for a great price. Paid it off a long time ago. Still have it as my backup 4WD car which spends most of it's time in the garage. The only thing I did was add a K&N air filter just so I never needed to replace it. Just clean it. The motor pulls SO HARD. So easy to crash with the Forester's shitty suspension. Rust will always be an issue with these cars in the salt belt. I still love it.
if you can find an sti without spending sti money? get a manual Subaru legacy gt. might be a bit difficult to find but they are like 5 to 10 grand cheaper for pretty much the exact same car. but hes right. the sti is a bit over priced. especially if you want a low mileage one thats in good condition. 2007 sti in good condition around here is almost 19 grand. do you know how much of a better car i can buy with 19 grand? theres a few 5.0 mustang gts near me that are in that same price range. making over 100 more horsepower. i can get a gto of the same year. nice car but they are too damn expensive for what they are.
That was the first new car I was going to buy. I waited two weeks to think about it and lost my first good paying job. I was lucky and disappointed simultaneously.
I had a 2004 STi for a while. Really liked it. It was stock though. So that's probably why I liked it. I averaged 28 mph on the freeway. But only 15-18 mpg in city and 12-15 on winding dirt roads... Heh heh heh. It was great until I was driving up a hill at a measly 45mph and the second crank bearing disintegrated. The debris caused the oil pressure regulator to stick, oil pressure reached close to 200psi and blew the oil filter off. Within three seconds as the power dropped like a fumbled football I managed to pull over and stop. But the engine shut off before I could. And it was over. Full rebuild required. Subaru wanted $7,000 for a new engine installed. Admitted that the first 4,000 STi's off the line had composite bearings that failed. But no, it wasn't under warranty because I was the third owner and it was 6.1 miles over the warranty period. (50,006.1) 😣😭 So I spent $4,800 having it built with top of the line parts. New cams with slightly longer lift periods. New lightweight pistons from Germany. Cosworth Crank, crank bearings and oil regulator. And more things beyond that than I can remember. Including a Kevlar clutch. Which I recommend. Unlike those ceramic clutches that are very uncomfortable to drive. The Kevlar clutch was a wonderful design. The engine was built for 600+ horsepower but tuned to just 340hp. It was fast, fun and easy to drive. Sounded fantastic and then I ran out of money and had to sell it. For me, I owned it because it's my favorite car ever. If I own one again, I too will use a low key wing and probably find one in a non-descript color like gray or white. Mine was blue. And it attracted police like bees to honey. I eventually got used to being followed everywhere when in any town. But it gets old quick. Even if it is funny when they discover a mid 30s man in a double breasted suit driving it and get the most confused look. Hahaha.

"In Gran Turismo One no matter what you do to the car it _gets better_
Heh.
The recall didn't pertain to sti's they have aluminum control arms. All other imprezas including wrx's and ' foresters were involved in it
Except the 2006 WRX. It did have the aluminum control arm. Then on 2007 they reverted back to steel.
Why anyone would live in a cold state, when you can live on the beach, is beyond me

"It has seats, they're not exactly impressive"
Well, are they... imprezzive?
“Just because the glove fits doesn’t mean you can’t still shake the hand that’s wearing it”
An O.J. reference, yes? But I can't connect it to the car.
The Focus WRC never had a roadlegal counterpart (you know, turbo AWD making close to 300hp).
Evan Wade Me too except I fist saw the rally car in Gran Turismo 4.
Diego Ruiz Well right now the rally Focus that Ken Block drives has the Focus RS
Evan Wade I wanted one because of the old Colin McRae games on ps1 and watching the rally's (I live in wales so there's a lot of em)
Good choice with the 997 and if its anything like the 996, in another few years they'll be really affordable. I'd love a black & orange 997 GT3RS.
Very sadaru
I also went the wingless route, turns out it makes a difference on the highway much to my surprise.

@4:53 "This is the car for the guy who's ever only owned one version of Microsoft Word. The pirated kind." Good one, Mr. Regular. Kudos and applause.

E - lame culture
Nate Pranaitis agreed 💯👌 it doesn't help that all modern cars 2010-present look all the same and they all look like fuckin space ships in the inside with all of the unnecessary gagets n buttons.

anyway, I have a stock looking bugeye and all the tweeners look at it as a blank canvas for their next pep boys visit...
I really hope it doesn't get infected with the S13 issue on having no more, or at the most, a handful of unmodified cars. As time goes on, it'll be impossible to find an unmodified Impreza of this age....kinda sad, though I can see why they get modified to insanity.
This comment needs more thumbs up.

When you hit turbulence it makes you feel like the world is ending.
Taint Slammer LV 2.
Aaaand we found a type two flyer

Please, please, do a review on one of these! Come to SLC and you can review mine, lol. But I do think it's one of the most understated and underdiscussed cars in the realm of "car people".
Ryan Agreed. I have an '06 6-6 Sedan. It's a keeper.

When I was in high school, the WRX STI made 300 horsepower and the Mustang GT made 260. I thought, "300 horse?! Wow that car is so advanced, so high tech. Nothing can compete with that."
Then the Mustang made 300 horse, and the STI made what, 305? Bridging the gap...
Now the Mustang makes 460 (!) and the STI makes...305.
The crazy thing is the current gen WRX STI (which has a lot of its edges smoothed out & rawness toned down) is still considered one of the most RAW new sport sedans money can buy at the current time. Yet, in the 2000s the STI was still more tame than something like the Neon SRT4 and LanEvo 9?
If that doesn't speak to the current car culture of what constitutes as a "sport sedan", I honestly don't know what does.

Cars are often dirty in places with snowy winters because a bunch of road grime and brake dust gets mixed into the snow. The grime stays on the car after the snow has melted and few people wash the grime off during the winter since it might end up snowing again really soon.

Subaru interiors rattle so much. Once you own one, you get used to it.
+Adam Steele
OH I do understand the rattles.
That is one of the dirtiest STis I've seen.

This is the thing that Mr. Regular left out in this video; how many young adults think they're rally drivers once they buy one.
eletor well, if you want to get into rally, an sti is a good choice
It is for sure. Maybe I'm just old and I remember all the dudes that talked about rally racing as an "expert" the day after they bought these cars.
if you can find an sti without spending sti money? get a manual Subaru legacy gt. might be a bit difficult to find but they are like 5 to 10 grand cheaper for pretty much the exact same car. but hes right. the sti is a bit over priced. especially if you want a low mileage one thats in good condition.
Hahaha.
