In maintenance, SHIT HAPPENS! Learned back in 1998 about Seafoam. Did everything I could to get a 1968 Johnson 20 horse running good. Double checked everything to include the carb. Had an occasional miss and rough starting? Let that engine sit all winter with seafoam in it. When I would walk by It all winter I would pump the fuel ball. When spring came, I put the muffs on it and started it. The thing started right up, smokes real bad for a couple of minutes and then ran like a new motor? Since then, I use seafoam in everything that I own with zero problems. Once a year, I put a whole can of seafoam in my auto oil change for 3 to 5 thousand miles and it cleans your system spotless. Good stuff for all gas and diesel engines.

My father always ran our 15hp Evinrude out of fuel also. He even would pull the choke and start and run all that remaining fuel out as well.
Only rebuilt the carburetor one time in 20 years he was alive. I still have it.

Getting that last few drops of fuel by pulling the choke sure is good practice but I found over the years that the "weak link" is the line running from the tank to the engine. People just let it sit full of fuel which slowly but surely desintegrate the insides of that line. Priming your motor the next time around just fills the carb with rubber debris, the longer the delay between usages, the more debris it generates. Before leaving for the lake, I always stick a fuel connector on the engine's end of the line and sqeeze the priming bulb untill it spits out clean fresh fuel. Regards !

I still have a 9.9 Sail Master and a big box of parts around here somewhere. The engine ran great last time I ran it, but it has probably been 15 years. I have a long shaft kit and a whole long shaft leg too, but I think the leg is a 74, but it is still the same generation.

For those that wish to check there voltage of the ignition, CDI has a Peak Reading Voltage adapter part # 511-9773 with leads attached AND #511-9773NL without leads.
    With is about $112.00.
Voltage on omc early cdi is generally 150 + between Brown and Brown and Yellow wires. I've seen 400 volts on a real hot ign.
Engine must turn at least 300 RPM'S to test properly.
Trigger OR timer base ( on OMC ) SAME thing is .5 volts + ( seen 20 + before).
On an OMC the WHITE wire is the ground wire , the other wires are the the ones going to each cyl.
Remember this also ! On a OMC power pack the coil leads ARE :
BLUE stripe #1. Green stripe # bottom cyl.
    NO stripe middle cyl.
Remember blue = sky or top cyl.
GREEN = GRASS OR bottom cyl.
Forgot to say you will need a voltage meter that is 400 volts DC or more.
    ( MULTI METER ).
    HOPE this helps y'all

This video takes me back to the early mid 80's when I was given a 1957 Gold and Blue Evinrude 7 1/2 hp with just a clutch knob on top to disengage the prop, reverse was spin the motor around 180°
When I received this motor I was told that the head gasket had been replaced and it would run but overheats rather quickly.
A test run proved that it did indeed run and overheat very fast, I did notice there was no water flow from the outlet port on the middle section.
Took the pump apart only to find everything was in good working order, was able to run a long stiff spring up both the water inlet tube and the water outlet all the way to the crankcase by measuring against spring length with no obstructions, replaced the rubber tube seat on the pump still no flow,
Now like you fast forward a few years cause I had given up on it, I had a dream one night as to what the issue was, I removed the head to check the gasket and found that someone had hand cut a head gasket and failed to put any water passages in the gasket only bolt holes.
I installed a new OEM Head Gasket and guess what? I now had water flow and cooling and I still have and run this very same motor to this day.
So the moral to this story is as well as yours Don't believe what you are told as people will say anything to get rid of somthing they don't want.
Glad everything worked out for ya in the end. Now you have a great running motor.

I think many of your viewers cheered as you solved the problem. Reading the comments l learned l should be running the motor dry at the end of the day. Clearing the fuel line is a great tip also. If your using a 4 stroke motor on a weekly basis in the summer. Should one run the carb dry too?
    Thanks again for your perseverance

Glad to see it's running well, nothing wrong with those speeds at all. I remembered you having it running fairly well a couple years ago. Maybe something happened lugging the banana around and then kept chewing on the gasket the more it ran.

CDI ignition is the best by far.
In the 25 years of useing there products I don't believe I've sent back 2 maybe 3 units.
There TECH side is more then great.
When I did need there assistance together we would walk thru the issue.
If I found a rare issue I would call them and see if they ever ran across this seemingly rare issue. At times they had not and was glad I called.
We are ALL learning and it never hurts to share idea's.
You won't go wrong with CDI.
At one time a long time ago the company was called RayPair.
    Ray was a wonderful guy.
I remember him always saying, he had no use of the surface gap spark plugs. ( mercury )
He always recommended using the J gap ( old school ) plugs.
And he was correct in my opinion.
They idle better with J gaps .
The L77JC4 is the L76V surface gap heat range.
I use L77JC4 IN MANY Mercs. Plus the QL78JC4 ,Extended nose plug.
Just one heat range more. And in a little fishing engine like here that sees a lot of idle or trolling speed it doesn't hurt to have one heat range higher.
Also. Some older outboards have high compression.
I recommend using premium fuel and 40:1 fuel ratio.
Motor will last longer because the higher obtain will help keep dentenation down.

Another Awesome video 👍👍👍👍.. Just one Question what was for Supper ? The 9.9/15 Big secret did have one last secret the head gasket. But I do remember you checking compression on it .. The looks of gasket kinda seems like maybe whoever had it before might have had head off and when they put it back on it wasn’t quite lined up and they push the bolt through and it cracked it then the water just started to slowly eat gasket away. But look at the 9.9/15 now She running like just came off the shelf. It should last another 35 years Sounds good and seems to have good response time . Those speeds are just right for it . The Good Enough looks good on the water . Great drone footage. 👍👍👍👍👍Only thing missed seeing Ol Glory 🇺🇸at the beginning.. As always Sir thanks for the ride along and Keep’em coming.

For the longest time I wasn't sure why my 15hp Evinrude was hard to start after it was tilted up. My 30hp Evinrude showed me why. Fuel runs out of the carb when tilted way up. The 15hp has an airbox that catches the fuel and then dumps it all back into the carb when lowered back down flooding itself. The 30hp has no airbox so no problem starting it but wat a mess.

A 15 is a 9.9 with a large venturi carb AND the REED stops set higher to allow for more fuel to enter. !
Use to be an inspector for APBA ( AMERICAN POWER BOAT ASSO. ).
    the J ( BEGINNER CLASS RACE ENGINE ) IS A 15 HP WITH A 1/2 " RESTRICTER PLATE that makes a 15 a 6 hp.
Then when age limit is no longer an issue you take the restricter plate out and you have a 15 hp engine for the A stock class hydro or runabout class. 250 cc class in the alki world of boat racing.
