- As you know by now the big secret on this motor is it is not a 9.9 it is a true made from the factory 15 hp. It just has a 9.9 hat on it. Well as you know it died on its' maiden voyage and I am working to get it running again. Now it will not go back on the banana boat because it is too small. I am working on a 35 hp Johnson for the banana but I still think that will be too small as well. My target boat for the banana is a 50-70 hp. I want it to be stupid fast.

Today I took my 1990 Johnson 15 out on the water for the first time after a complete rebuild. She had been left to rot and hadn’t run in over 10 years. She ran like a champ today. @RMD I can’t thank you enough for your series on this motor, as it helped me a ton with my rebuild. Channels like this are what RUclips is all about. Thanks man!

First ! You are doing a great job with Hoop🐾 don’t mind the negative energy! Hater’s gonna hate ! Move on , you’re doing good! On the star link , usually can get 100’ cord & don’t do anything permanent until you see the best spot for your signal . It will search from ground level & find the best signal. Mostly just protect your wires & equipment from damage due to varmints & elements. The mobility is your friend! As far as the cover over your door , just do a small extension with your current roof pitch to cover your door & window to get you through winter. You can build a gazebo style later as time permits. Do your separate storage for fuel , gas tools & outhouse. Use the bus for your sound studio & upgrade as time permits. Use the carpet & tarp to cover windows & sound proofing acoustics. Most folks will give you good ideas & advice but in the end , do what’s good for you & Hoop ! It’s one step at a time & mostly get prepared for winter . You’re taking good care of Hoop , puppy food , bed & toys & he will be your faithful companion, not anyone else! He will grow into his own independence soon enough but will guard his territory with you . Dogs are very good learners & territorial. Anyway, enjoy your video content & proud of you! Encourage here ! I was given a 1989 15hp Johnson that hasn't run in years. I changed the water pump so far. It has great compression and spark. I'll be ready to fire it up in a couple of days. Your videos are very helpful. Thank you RMD, looking forward to part 2.0.

Been working on outboards for 10 years as a hobby. Omc is one of my favorites and especially 9.9-15. Those plastic bowls crack really easy if tightened too much. They especially crack when they tightened unevenly. I always tell people on the forums evenly snug the screws with blue lock tight on them. Doesn’t take much pressure to crack those sadly. Great work on your motors

So many people want the long shaft on their boats for pusher motor. I think I better keep what I have if I ever want to sell it again. I don’t own a boat ,so when ever we get a cabin to rent it seems like the boats are for short shaft. Like your channel 👍

I had the same thing on my 15 evinrude the top plastic plate cracked , the previous owner had super glued it and it worked fir a few Years but finally gave up, I bought a new one (expensive part) and installed it and worked great, it doesn't take much of a Crack to mess up the performance . Thanks fir the Great Video

I have the same motor. I did the same thing with the cover. This was to get around the limit on motor size in my local lake's HP limit. I bought it on ebay.

I had the problem with carb top plate engine would start and die, ended up replacing top plate no problems after. Ran great. Would have like to see the exhaust seals for water pickup on the exhaust pipe.

I have seen reeds bent like that. I have just flipped them over and they work and seal fine.

so boss man I started my 9.9 up the other day for the first time after a carb rebuild, fuel pump rebuild and new water pump and......it broke a rod! couldn't believe it, now i'm in search of a good used powerhead
Good Luck, they are hard to find. That's just bad luck on breaking the rod.

Well, according to the very khowledgeable gentleman behind Brandon's Garage (utube channel), it is of paramount importance that no light shine through those reeds when held up to a light source. He did a great series on rebuilding a 15 hp that is a must for all DIYfers. Fuel pumps on those move so much fuel that I doubt that your crack would be the culprit. Probably could still keep the bowl sufficiently supplied ... but I may be wrong ! Anxiously waiting for the final verdict !
I finally got all my parts in and I will begin reassembly. Stay tuned.
My first comment, after your part 1, nailed the cracked bowl as the source of the fuel leak but I am not with you for it to be the problem with the running issue. I still maintain a coil problem (or ignition power pack) Having said that, I think your leaf valves are ok and the loose bolts may have contributed as well. Also you could have performed a leak down test that may have narrowed down some other issues with out needing to teardown the powerhead. I realize you do that partially for educational purposes. I look forward to the next video.

I greatly appreciate the in depth procedure of Michael's videos especially on the 9.9 and 15hp Johnson outboards. I own a 1990 Johnson 15hp short shaft and a 1994 Johnson 9.9 short shaft outboard. I'm learning myself on theses little outboards and I will agree that Leeroy's Rambling is a very good source of information.

Hello. I have a Johnson 15hp outboard ((1988 model with rope pull start). It appears to be identical to the one shown in your video. I recently had a mechanic work on it but I ended up taking to another mechanic as the first one was taking too long to fix what should have been a simple problem. However, when the second mechanic started working on it he noticed that there was a spring hanging loose on the choke assembly and we can't work out where it fits back on. It is where it connects to the lever that operates the butterly vane when the choke lever is pulled out and pushed back in that is causing us headaches. Would you be able to take some close up photos of the the choke assembly showing the spring please? Thank you in advance for any help you can give us

A great informative video Michael. I’m currently looking for a ‘74 to ‘78 9.9 to do a conversion on but to find one in decent shape with good compression is a tough chore up here in Ontario Canada. Now I can add a ‘79 as a possibility. I’ve got an ‘83 but as you said that exhaust pipe is different. Keep these great videos coming!

74-77 wwere the worst of the johnson evinrude years because of the head design. it would foul the plugs more. read up on leeroy's ramblings.
The Replacement carb cover plate is different, It is reinforced to help prevent warping/cracking and will have torque tighten sequence numbers molded in. You have likely seen this info but don't think you mentioned it.

@@Michaelsbackyardmarina yes if you get a new bowl and top plate they have numbers beside the screw openings. This is for tightening sequence.
Have a question for you...what color orange wire goes to which coil pack? I have orange blue and orange green. I did your trick with the putty knife on the powerhead removal, Worked like a champ!!! Btw I just received my new/used 9.9 powerhead on Ebay and she's a beauty! Hardly any carbon build up in the exhaust chamber looks like low hrs..paid a little more for it but it was worth it. Came from Michigan so definitely fresh water operation a huge bonus! My old powerhead and exhaust is HIDIEOUS!! Btw I screwed up and threw a rod or broke the crankshaft on my old powerhead I used starting fluid 😒😪 lesson learned!

I have a 1980 Johnson 9.9. I'm trying to figure out how to change the T-stat without pulling the power head. Have you ever done that?

Check the manual there should be a tolerance using a feeler gauge on that reed.

Well it probably goes without saying there may have been a heavy hand on the carb assembly at some point. My Dad always said, "easy does it boy!"
My take on it would be, if you want it to stay tight use Lock- Tight, not more torque! 😉
That would be my guess too. One old feller use to say "you don't have to tighten till the water runs out"

First off, I really enjoy your common sense approach to repairs. I have a 1990 9.9 that I have only run with muffs or in a trash can. There is white milky oil coming out the mid section exhaust ports and the prop hub after I stop it. Is this normal? The plugs look wet, but I haven’t had it on the water. I picked up a 15 1990 to do the carb swap. I noticed the 15 pumps water out the telltale and water out the midsection exhaust breather. Should my 9.9 have water coming out the midsection exhaust? Thank you!
Not normal. Sounds like you might have a gear box leak or a head gasket that is gone. Do a compression check.

We have a Johnson 9.9 86 1986 motor and the boat sunk and the motor sat on the bottom of the river for one day and we got it out we change the spark plugs and it ran fine then all of a sudden it just stopped but we ran it for 2 days and it runs great and then it just stopped running and won't start
good morning, I like your video. I have a johnson 15 hp 2-stroke from 1999. I bought it 6 months ago, I took it to a specialized mechanic to do a service since it had not been predicted for many years. The mechanic told me that the engine was really new and that it was really surprising that it was in those conditions. The issue is that I am from South American Uruguay, here there is only Mercury. And people say mine is not a good engine, what can you tell me about the quality of Johnson.
Johnson’s are great engines in my experience. Take care them and they will take care of you.
the tuned exhaust was put on in mid 80's to make up for the horsepower rating change from crank to prop hp.
the 9.9's and 15's from 1974 to 1985 were actually less powerful 13 for the 15hp and about 8.5hp for the 9.9s because they were rated at the crankshaft and you lose 10-15% power when doing 90 degree turns. (propshaft)

Cracked carb bowl and warped plastic top plate. Hold on to your wallet for the replacement cost.

Oh yeah I see that they're going for about 250- no problem there, I just wanted to confirm nothing else needed to be done on a 1990 evinrude... U mentioned that website Leroy ramblings and I read the whole thing with no concrete answer for a 1990.
on the 1994 evinrude 15 hp they did add a 6th screw on the top plate part #437985 it's like $55!
ain't that some crap. I bought a new top plate and it was expensive.
make a blank off plate for the exhaust and pressure test it once you get the reed plates in. double check the crank seals. but yeah carb is the biggest thing. reeds MUST SEAL.

Next thing to do is remove the thermostat and replace it . Remove exhaust side cover and check water passages. Check water discharge hose for clog ages as well discharge nozzle. Also check the throttle pick up is proper setting.After reassembling
After putting carb together, put a piece of fuel line onto carb and turn carb upside down and blow into hose and and listen for leaks.

Remove the spacer. You also need a short driveshaft and a short shift shaft

That Reed valve might be the problem because I was watching another program and they said that there should be no Gap it at all in there it was Danger Marine on RUclips

I think the timing is off on this motor may be a slip fly wheel key or the magnetic rain but operates the sensor could be out of place I don’t think you found the real problem yet I was a service technician in OMC dealer for over 20 years I’ve seen it all

Yep, allot to be said for old vintage outboards with all metal parts less gaskets, seals and orings. I have a few plastic parts on my 2000 yamaha and so far no problems yet
I have a 1990 Johnson 15 hp short shaft I've been working on. The carb top plate is plastic and someone had done a repair on it with JB Weld at some point in time. It did start up and run fine with repaired JB Weld top plate although I didn't want to take any chances with it leaking so I ordered a new carb top plastic plate and installed it.That top plate is like $125 bucks new ,the bottom fuel bowl is plastic also, it's like $40 bucks new,big difference in the price there for sure between the two carb parts. I have some fuel leaking from some where, but it's very minimal, like maybe a possible mist of fuel, but I can't see it leaking while at idle or when running it in a test water barrel from the carb.I'm suspecting now a possible hair line crack in the bottom fuel bowl after watching Michael's video.I'm also thinking it's happening at WOT,IDK for sure. I took the boat and motor to the lake last week and motor seem to run out fine. I did see some minimal fuel leaking from the little drain holes down the leg of the motor from the bottom pan after I pulled the boat and motor out of the water. Looks like I'll be pulling that carb off again and really inspecting those two plastic plates for hair line crack's now.
That's insane amount for just part of a carb. I wonder if one of those 3 printers could make one cheaper?
@@TimsWorkshopTJY I agree it's totally a insane price for a piece of plastic. The fuel bowl is high enough priced, but alot more reasonable around $40 bucks. I have no idea about 3D printing one,I know nothing about how that all really works.
a good way to find cracks in plastic is to spray with brake cleaner and watch it as it evaporates, the cracks will be the last places to evaporate.

If I may ask you a question.... did it just die or did it sputter then quit ? You know like a lean sneeze . If it did that then I’d say top block seal and carb if it just died I’d say it’s the charge pack and if it ran on one cylinder I’d say coil . It’s just my opinion ! And yes the 9.9 and 15 are the same C.I. Blocks just like the 20 and 25’s !
It seems to choke out on it's on gas. Lot's of fuel running out in the engine pan.

I still think it's electronics. Coils will work fine when cold but once the motor warms up it acts different. I think yes you have a fuel leak but I think it's dying due to electronics
