Yes I agree. I’ve been riding for a few years and I still learned more about riding. More about areas where I lacked practice. I’d recommend the class to anyone who rides motorcycles. I’m going back to take the advanced rider course with my own motorcycle soon.
@phillippeharris5557 New York DMV doesn't provide classes for cars and motorcycles. You'd have to practice on your own, take the classroom safety class on your own, and then make an appointment to take the "road test" in front of a DMV Evaluator, (DMV doesn't provide the bike). MSF provides the classroom instruction, riding practice, and the bike, and you take the "road test" in front of your MSF Instructor. Once successfully completed, you'll get a card to present to DMV, and your motorcycle permit will be upgraded to a full motorcycle license. MSF all the way.✌🏾
@@JustaGSXR No bike registration needed, just have to renew motorcycle license at same time car license and paying the $36 extra. For anyone watching this. I just took the course last weekend. It’s not hard and it really builds your basics as a rider. I’d never been on a bike before and had not a single issue with the class. The only thing you would have to do on your own time is practice throttle control and shifting especially if you’ve never driven a manual before
Kind of crazy but I've been riding since 1970, Sturgis three times and Daytona twice. Still riding after 11 bikes and a whole bunch of miles. And never have yet got a mc endorsement, even stopped a few times with only warnings. But now at 69 been thinking taking the course just to have the endorsement, your never to old to learn something new. I have always light foot brake & preloaded throttle when on dead stop turns, slow turns or U-turns & turn your head where you want the bike to go. When you rode dirt bikes and choppers and drove semi tractor/trailers in your early life you learn what keeps you up, along with common sense speed and following distance.
Had him as an instructor as well, he made sure we knew what we were doing, enjoyed taking his lessons. Also he has some crazy skill, casually riding the bikes to pick up the small cones off the ground while leaning over or even just when he’s demonstrating the lessons. He was a pretty cool guy.
This brought me back a little ptsd from doing the course, but was one of the best decisions I made. 16 years later I still use what I learned in these drills.
Haha same! I remember my last day, the hours of drills right before the test... the anxiety was real. Passed on my first try. Thank god, not something I want to do again.
LITERALLY just took this course in ohio. Had a dude bragging about riding years and "forgetting hes so experienced".... he got hollered at more than anyone and almost failed the course.
The 500cc v-twins Harley provides are a great bike to learn on. 1st and 2nd gear are speed-throttled and they are low enough to flat foot. It's good to get experience with a 'heavier' bike at low speeds and duck walking. This is more real world than a 150-300cc bike. Half of our class already owned bikes, a few seemed like veteran riders and we had maybe 4-5 GREEN riders. Maybe a quarter of the class didn't pass =o Mainly, going outside the slow speed turn and hitting cones or going outside the cone course. The staggered cones were tough - even if you can do them 4 out of 5 times, at the end, you only have the ONE shot. If you did them 50/50 during class, then the pressure was high. Honestly, I think if you didn't pass this class, you would still have a very good chance at passing the DMV course (if you are old enough to skip MSF entirely). EITHER way, pass or not - it's a great thing to do - especially with HD, these bikes, and the way the class/course is set up. You were in a different city, and things looked very similar to ours. Except our course was built from scratch on property they purchased, and we had a real toilet. woot High speed breaking - be sure to get enough speed in second and downshift during the stop to end up in 1st. You'll have to do it again if you didn't go fast enough. I don't know if there's points lost for doing it multiple times but def get into 1st gear, they want you to pull away after stopping. One of the BIGGEST things they focus on, and you'll see this in many videos, is - Keep your head and eyes UP and TURN THAT HEAD when you turn the bike. They want your helmet INTO your shoulder if possible - and use your peripheral vision. If you LOOK and turn your head like a professional, it will help your riding immensely. The bike goes where your EYES go. They HAMMER it constantly - so do it. They will wave constantly - HELLOOOO!! - UP HERE - WHY did you hit that cone you were LOOKING at?? - HELLOO! pretty funny actually, but get those eyes UP. Step 1: Get a class. Illinois doesnt have 2/3 sectors running right now so you've essentially got like 6 classes for the entire state. They're all booked full and the closest to me is over an hour away.
This is such a great video to see, especially since when I took the class it was at a HD dealership in Wyoming and we only had two of the HD bikes used here. Great stuff to see especially since riding season is getting closer every day up here in Wyoming
I went to my msf course this past weekend and i never had been on a motorcycle before, and after an hour struggling to find the friction zone and just as i was getting the hang of it i was asked to leave. I told them a few times it was ny very first time. I thought this course was to learn, i was shocked and discouraged being i had no way of practicing beforehand. And i have to pay even more money? I barely got an hour of time to learn on an actual motorcycle
Yeah I started the free msf course in my state years ago. I took the classroom portion and got a perfect score. When I told them I had never ridden a motorcycle before, I was advised to not take the riding portions of the class. They said it was “technically” for beginners, but if I’d never ridden before, it would probably be too advanced. I couldn’t believe it. I never went back.
Best advice I can give is Do your best and don't take it at a HD unless you want to risk getting an Audit and having to do the DMV test. Only people that failed MSF class I took where a few people that wouldn't speed up just a little to help with turning.
Why did you wait two years to get a license? Insurance? “I might as well get it fixed”. It took you two years to came to that conclusion? At least you did it. Congrats.
I’m not sure if they will use the small cones in your class. It just depends on where you take the class. The cones are small but you should be able to see them as you get near them. Let me know if they used cones that small in your course. Good luck!
I would’ve liked to take the test at the dmv but Texas requires us to take the MSF Course. I could’ve saved some time by testing out but I had to take the 3 day course instead. It’s ok because I enjoy riding and I had fun riding another motorcycle.

Ya am on this group for where I live for motorcycle few people said am stupid to not do the course other thing I said it be waste for me one person took it wrong way and thought I was saying the course is waste of money for everyone when that not true I was trying to say it was waste of money for me. I took my road test 3 months ago but I road on my permit for 5 years. A lot by myself because I don’t live in big town so if you ride smart cops don’t brother you and a lot of cops here rides too.
You were allowed to drive your bike to the course? I’m in Canada, and the only way you could use your own bike was to haul it in or have someone with a license drive it in.
But you can drive your moto with M1(which is just the written test). But in Ontario the M1 exit course I don't think they allow with our own motorcycle. You have to use the course motorcycle.
Hi! Thanx for this upload. Watching it just before I start my first motorcycle lessons. Got questions though… - Can you ride a motorcycle in the USA without a motorcycle license? 😱 - Is this MSF course the only thing you have to do and pass to get your license? I am from across the pond (Netherlands) and we have to complete a pretty extensive training, 2 practical and 1 theoretical exam for a motorcycle license. Even if you already have drivers license for a car.
The class is 3 days long. 1 classroom day with a written test and 2 field days on the motorcycle the third day is the test day. No you’re not supposed to ride without a motorcycle license. They don’t ask you for a license when purchasing a motorcycle so you’d be surprised how many people don’t have a motorcycle license.
I'm 68 and wear trifocals. I can see fine, but them parkin' lot zits are gonna be hard to see. 6" or so cones would be easier to spot quickly? Gotta finish the mods on my '18 V Star 250 to practice more before the MSF at LCCC they have now.
Would you be willing to elaborate on your experience? Did you just pass, or pass really well? Was it fun? Did you have any problems? Did you meet anyone you're still in touch with? @@MrEmt703
Let me ask you a question. I’ve been riding an automatic mini bike Honda Navi for about 3 months and I’m ready for something bigger and am looking at a rebel 500 or scrambler. Point is idk how to shift and haven’t on a vehicle in my life. Was shifting easy to learn on your own without the class?
Have you ever driven a vehicle with a manual transmission? The shifting is the same concept just that the controls are in different locations. You could also try to get a motorcycle with a DCT- dual clutch transmission which basically makes it like an automatic. Another option is to get a rekcluse clutch, this will make it so you don’t need to use the clutch when shifting.
Yes. The vast majority of license classes in the US are MSF BRCu. There are exercises for swerving and quick stop but the total course is about 11 hours on the bike plus some classroom time. It's better than having no class requirement but you can't turn out riders like in countries where they have tiered and graduated licensing requirements.
The bike shakes alot front twisting the back and when accelerating. Another part needed that going straight the handles wont wobble.Like a suspension or hard cushion but deactivated in a turn. Thinking
Hey guys, at about minute 13:25 (following the guy with blue shirt - Day 1 Accekeration/Breaking), the rider slowed down and the instructor says something about, "Fingers", but I couldn't make it out. Does anyone know what he said or was talking about? Thanks, great video!
Great video, hope you don’t mind asking but is this course something you have to take in order to get a MC license ? Do you know if the course is required in every state ? Thank you
It depends on what state you live in. Some states require you to take the course. Others require you to go to the dmv and take a driving test, they will give you a route and follow you.
Whichever way you want to go is fine. There were people who never rode before and they were able to pass the course. I had been riding for a few years before I took the course. If you like a certain bike and can get a good deal then go ahead and buy it. I would recommend the course because you wouldn’t want to drop your bike when learning to ride/practice.
Do the course and get your licence first. You don't know what you don't know so, have the discipline to at least get a basic understanding before exposing yourself to road realities and others to your lack of knowledge and skill. Buy a small and manageable bike at first. Learn the skills and earn the right to take on the bigger bikes.

Funny how beginners course for safe riding, like changing lanes….is on a bike with NO MIRRORS 😂 FOLLOW BY instructors voice in riders thoughts when changing lanes on a bike with no mirrors having to shoulder check….look where you want the bike to go😂
The mirrors are removed so that they can’t be broken when the bikes are dropped. Also I always head check whenever switching lanes because all mirrors have blind spots.
I wish I had seen this before I took the class. By the way, if you show up riding a motorcycle without license to the MSF class I took, you are disqualified from taking the class.
youre allowed to drive without license over there? here in norway, if i wanted to drive with my own bike i would have to transport it on a trailer to the school
Some states in the US allow you to ride with just the written temporary test with some minor restrictions. Where I live, that is the case. With your Temps and for the 1st year you are licensed, you must wear a helmet, No passenger, no riding in the dark.
Man I’ve bikes for years and everyone says it’s easy to get your license but all them instructions make it seem so damn complicated, I also can’t see any of the lines or cones, is that just the camera cause it seems that way with every video
I’d try it again. Give yourself some time and try to get some practice in before you start the class again. Learn from your mistakes and try to improve in those areas. Try the Harley dealership, they should have a jumpstart trailer where you can practice the controls, shifting, friction zone etc. You could also try to get a friend to help you out in an open parking lot to practice your slow speed maneuvers and balance.
@@cruisermike thanks for your response!! I’m just going to take my test at the motor vehicles in my area then practice on a bike and of course jump start. I’m definitely trying again, not giving up that easy 😂
How did you get a motorcycle without an M license? Doesn't the dmv not let you register it plus the insurance company? Im trying to get a motorcycle before i go to a msf course to practice before i go and feel extra confident.
If you’re in traffic and it’s stop and go? Cease all distractions. You’re music, phone calls etc. pay very close attention to the vehicles around you because people will slam on their brakes and swerve into your lane. Practice practice practice harsh braking

Yea it’s weird how they do the scoring. No points for a stall, but if you stall 3 times you fail the skills test.
Step 1: Get a class. Illinois doesnt have 2/3 sectors running right now so you've essentially got like 6 classes for the entire state. They're all booked full and the closest to me is over an hour away.
had to take mine in quincy from galesburg it was worth it i passed and it was during my birthday but it sucks only one sector is doing classes
That ffw scared the sh*t out of me, brother! I thought you're about to ride back to the future 😅
This is such a great video to see, especially since when I took the class it was at a HD dealership in Wyoming and we only had two of the HD bikes used here. Great stuff to see especially since riding season is getting closer every day up here in Wyoming
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm sure glad you are finally getting a licence. That's nice.
Smart man to get that license 0:43
19:28 LOL the old "you dropped some money trick" LMFAO i cant believe it lol
I went to my msf course this past weekend and i never had been on a motorcycle before, and after an hour struggling to find the friction zone and just as i was getting the hang of it i was asked to leave. I told them a few times it was ny very first time. I thought this course was to learn, i was shocked and discouraged being i had no way of practicing beforehand. And i have to pay even more money? I barely got an hour of time to learn on an actual motorcycle
That’s fucked up
Yeah I started the free msf course in my state years ago. I took the classroom portion and got a perfect score. When I told them I had never ridden a motorcycle before, I was advised to not take the riding portions of the class. They said it was “technically” for beginners, but if I’d never ridden before, it would probably be too advanced. I couldn’t believe it. I never went back.
@@TheTangTamer how tf are you supposed to ever learn 😂
Best advice I can give is Do your best and don't take it at a HD unless you want to risk getting an Audit and having to do the DMV test. Only people that failed MSF class I took where a few people that wouldn't speed up just a little to help with turning.
Got my class Monday! 😂😅
Why did you wait two years to get a license? Insurance? “I might as well get it fixed”. It took you two years to came to that conclusion? At least you did it. Congrats.
FYI about half of the people riding motorcycles on the road don’t have a motorcycle license. You can insure without a license.
I can’t see those small cones on the ground. I hope they don’t have those little cones when I take my MFS class.
I’m not sure if they will use the small cones in your class. It just depends on where you take the class. The cones are small but you should be able to see them as you get near them. Let me know if they used cones that small in your course. Good luck!
My class used the same cones, they are easier to see in person than on camera.
@@cruisermike
They used small cones when I took my class but it’s easy once your there. It’s not that bad you can see the cone.
If you can't get in the free class by your state, these are a good option
Exercise 1 is motorcycle familiarization, this is exercise 2 part 2 and part 3 at the beginning of the video
Never really rode a bicycle anywhere and I’m just tryna jump on one of these
I didn’t take the motorcycle course I did the road test throw dmv because I had two people who been ridding there hole life teach me everything
I would’ve liked to take the test at the dmv but Texas requires us to take the MSF Course. I could’ve saved some time by testing out but I had to take the 3 day course instead. It’s ok because I enjoy riding and I had fun riding another motorcycle.
@@cruisermike in Texas they make you take the course what the hell that just stupid ya I live upstate New York they have courses but am like am not going waste 300 for stuff I can learn from buddy’s. Other thing you paying to pass most the time less you really suck because my one buddy did the course he said there was girl there that crash she still pass I heard other stories about the same thing.

Right, some do have their learners before taking the safety course. Ignore my silly comment please!
Is the instructor with the orange shirt missing a leg?? And is it from a motorcycle accident??
He is, but it is from serving our country... because he's a badass. Source: He was my instructor too :)
Hi! Thanx for this upload.
Watching it just before I start my first motorcycle lessons. Got questions though…
- Can you ride a motorcycle in the USA without a motorcycle license? 😱
- Is this MSF course the only thing you have to do and pass to get your license?
Great video. Day 1 is tomorrow for me!
Good luck!!

@ no to the car question. And I currently have a dct bike. Looking to move up and learn.
Is this all you have to do in USA, to get a motorcycle license??
Don’t you learn to swerve or make emergency stops and all the other stuff?
Yes. The vast majority of license classes in the US are MSF BRCu. There are exercises for swerving and quick stop but the total course is about 11 hours on the bike plus some classroom time. It's better than having no class requirement but you can't turn out riders like in countries where they have tiered and graduated licensing requirements.
It's crazy easy 😂
MSF course is free in Pennsylvania 😁nice video brought back some memories I remember the peanut one lol, ride safe ✌
If I’m from another state could I go to there for the free course?
Sadly no maybe if you move here and change your license over to Pa then move back lol.
Do they lend you the bike or do you have to bring your own?
The bike shakes alot front twisting the back and when accelerating. Another part needed that going straight the handles wont wobble.Like a suspension or hard cushion but deactivated in a turn. Thinking
Hey guys, at about minute 13:25 (following the guy with blue shirt - Day 1 Accekeration/Breaking), the rider slowed down and the instructor says something about, "Fingers", but I couldn't make it out. Does anyone know what he said or was talking about? Thanks, great video!
He was telling the rider to use all fingers to squeeze the levers.
6:24 did he say “two fingers on that brake lever is bad” ??? 😂😂
Yeah he said more than two fingers
Great video, hope you don’t mind asking but is this course something you have to take in order to get a MC license ?
Do you know if the course is required in every state ?
Thank you
It depends on what state you live in. Some states require you to take the course. Others require you to go to the dmv and take a driving test, they will give you a route and follow you.
Question should I buy my bike and practice as I've never rode before or just take this class first?
I just finished the course now I'm watching this video. Uh oh?
This was super helpful! Taking my class this weekend💪🏾 thanks bro

I was just wondering if the cones are easier to see in person. I am kinda nervous seeing all these videos and I can’t really see the cones as they approach hoping it’s more visible in person as I’m going for my class next month
Have my class next weekend with my local harley and I am very nervous (I have no experience) any suggestions that will help me in the class
I wonder if his limb loss was motorcycle related.
Great video!!
I only need a m class to ride a scooter...do i have to use a motorcycle?
What did they say when you showed up on a bike? In Rhode Island they say they will auto fail you if someone shows up on a motorcycle already.
I wish I had seen this before I took the class. By the way, if you show up riding a motorcycle without license to the MSF class I took, you are disqualified from taking the class.
I go next week.. first time owning a bike ... i wish i seen this code earlier.. i need my lil money 🎉... Jk wish me luck...
youre allowed to drive without license over there? here in norway, if i wanted to drive with my own bike i would have to transport it on a trailer to the school
It’s only illegal if you get caught
Great advice @@cruisermike
Some states in the US allow you to ride with just the written temporary test with some minor restrictions. Where I live, that is the case. With your Temps and for the 1st year you are licensed, you must wear a helmet, No passenger, no riding in the dark.
@@amanda1500 Yes... but you cannot ride to the actual course lol

did they already have bikes ready for others or did they bring they own bikes?

Man I’ve bikes for years and everyone says it’s easy to get your license but all them instructions make it seem so damn complicated, I also can’t see any of the lines or cones, is that just the camera cause it seems that way with every video
I took mine today and failed. Nice course anyway
That's dope👌🏾
If you’re in traffic and it’s stop and go? Cease all distractions. You’re music, phone calls etc. pay very close attention to the vehicles around you because people will slam on their brakes and swerve into your lane. Practice practice practice harsh braking
How much are they charging for the class these days?
The class is $249 for the full class. If you buy a motorcycle from the dealer they include the class with the purchase. If you are a part of the local HOG Chapter the class is $100. You can visit Alamo Harley Davidson for more details, tell them I sent you over.

if you dont have a motorcycle license how did you register and plate it ?
They don’t ask you for a license when buying a motorcycle. As long as you pay for the motorcycle and have insurance you can get the registration and plates. I’m my experience I’ve seen most people who are riding motorcycles on the road don’t have a motorcycle license.
so do you have to lean even though going below 20 mph ? because yall are leaning at around 10 mph - 15 mph
