I took my test in the 70's in the rain, the dude didn't want to do it because it was raining, I said "I rode down here in the rain for my test, you can give me the test in the rain, I said you can stand inside and look out your window". I passed lol

It was about 6 years ago I went to take this test on my 2011 Hayabusa. There were about 10 bikes there. All 250's and maybe one or 2 600s. They all looked at me like I was crazy. The only way I kept my Busa up in the circle was to accelerate and use my rear brake at the same time. After i passed the test, the instructor told me "next time, i recommend you slow down in the circle". If i slowed down, i would have dropped my 800 pound bike.

I have a scooter I'm going to take it on today and I spent the last three days practicing because it's so light weight I keep over-correcting or damn near tipping because at slow speeds you are practically encouraged to assist the turn with your feet and legs due to how light the damn thing is.

In Japan we had to know the course - they gave us a map of it to look at 5 mins before and made us memorize it. Where you had to drive between 2 white lines, we had a narrow ramp up to an elevated plank and then had to drive across the plank as slow as possible. Another part we had to lay the bike down and show them we could pick it up ourselves. Lots of small rules to re signaling and looking around, etc.

The California test looks so easy and relaxed. In the UK we have to take a theory test, a mod-1 test, which is off-road testing clutch control, manoeuvre at low and medium speed and the a mod-2 on-road test for 30 minutes. You have to pass in that order otherwise you can’t take the next section.

Just a heads-up to you guys. Don't just think you can walk in and pass the multiple choice test. Study the motorcycle handbook. I'm not kidding. Read every single page, then read it again. The test is tricky on purpose. Sometimes all 4 choices seem correct unless you REALLY know your stuff. It's not like the car exam, where it's just about traffic rules. No, this motorcycle exam goes into the physics of riding a motorcycle. And lots of situational best-practices. Such as where you should position yourself on the road when around other cars. Best way to stop in certain situations. What's the safest gear or helmet you can wear. Night riding requirements. Etc. I'm not dumb. I passed it. But it was hard. And I'm glad I studied.

Nice, here in Cali, they treat it as an add on to the car license. I believe you won't get the add on unless you have like a year of driving in traffic. So on the motorcycle test, all you need to show is the control over the bike. They focus on the slow ride because traffic in california is extreme. I guess they need to make sure you can drive in public area without hitting pedestrians.

Kevybear in the EU all the licensing for bikes are the same, some differ slightly in how they take the tests but it’s the same everywhere, in the UK we have the Motorcycle Theory Test (road signs, maintenance, hazard perception, etc), module 1 (motorcycle manoeuvres, slalom, u turn, figure of 8, avoidance, controlled stop, swerve) and Module 2 (road ride with an examiner), as someone that’s just been through all the stress of it and passed, this course is nothing, reminds me of the CBT (provisional motorcycle entitlement), nobody fails or passes the CBT either, it’s just training

Several years later when I went in to renew it, somehow they lost the record of me ever having a motorcycle endorsement so I had to retest from scratch, but at the time I didn't own a bike. A friend loaned me his Gold Wing (1100cc) which was just too big and too fast (even at idle) to go around those tight circles. After three times having to touch my foot to the ground, but EASILY driving into the street to turn around and back into the test area, the test person there realized the situation and passed me.

you need to slip the clutch and apply rear breaks and it should work well. It will take a bit of practice, but you'll get the hang of it. Also, suggest doing an offroad course. They are offered from beginner across all levels and you really learn how to handle a bike and gives you so much more confidence. I did a few of those in the UK with BMW on 1200 GS after getting back onto the bike after some 20 years not riding bikes. It's not only fun as hell but also really excellent for confidence and handling. I actually think that should be the course for taking the motorbike license. Be safe and best from the UK!

Days 2,3,4 learning to ride on the road with the instructor. Day 5, take test. Passed on a Honda MTX 125. This was in 1995.

With a motorcycle, a circle requires you to hold your line and maintain enough speed to not drop the bike. Honestly, I went through the MSF. They teach to look where you’re going as your body wants to go that way and the bike follows.
I’ve been riding for 8 years now (didn’t own a car for 7) and I can say low speed maneuvers are a skill riders riders shouldn’t neglect (especially while sitting in traffic in states where lane splitting is illegal).
