POV Motorcycle Skills Test - PASSED

  • This is the ALT-MOST (Alternate Motorcycle Operator Skills Test) which is currently used by twenty-nine states in the U.S. This particular test took place in Michigan with a private third-party tester. The test consists of a cone weave, controlled stop, left or right turn, u-turn, quick stop, and obstacle swerve, although not necessarily in that order.
    The only points deducted in this video were from me putting a foot down briefly during the u-turn, and from my stopping distance being a little too far for the quick stop.
    Bike used was a 2008 Kawasaki Ninja 250R. Filmed with a Drift HD 1080p action camera.
    UPDATE: I realize that other states/countries may have more difficult tests, but that is not the point of this video.

    Do you really call this a test? It's more like an activity.
    Come down to where I live, bet you couldn't beat it if you wanted to.
    Down in the Bikini Bottom, we only have one motorcycle teacher. Mrs. Puff, she's a tough kitten. It took me 5 years to get my motorcycle license. You have to jump and do 8 flips on your motorcycle, and you have to go fast enough to skip across the water. I had to go 657 miles per hour just to finish the test!

    Why is there so much hate on how easy this was...the msf course is 5 hours of class room and 10 hours of riding. They all go over the same thing this video did. None of it is hard some places make you do the figure 8 box and some don't...can't we just be happy that another person is on 2 wheels

    • @autech578
      @autech578 5 лет назад +12

      Amen. Nobody cares about the test we had to pass. Some are easier than others, but in the end, they all serve one thing: make sure you can ride on the street.
      Though I was confused whether this is the whole thing or not, is there some kind of theory classes or are you able to show up, deliver and get your permit?

      Here in Norway its very different when taking the motorcycle license. Here you can be 16 to ride a 125cc 15 kw bike. You have to complete multiple traffic courses and a theory test. Then you can take the driving course in the end. The difference is that you either drive with the teacher sitting on the back of the bike or him riding behind you. The riding course includes a part one: Tests in a area like this video with exercise cones. Then part two: You have to drive in traffic with your driving teacher either behind you or sitting on the back. If you complete that you have the a1 motorcycle license. The education system in Norway when it comes to driving licenses is very safe, and thats why so few accidents happen here also. But it's expensive:P

    Practice the quick-stop a few times so you feel comfortable stopping really fast and aren't afraid of losing control of the bike. On the u-turn: look where you want to go, don't be afraid to give it some throttle if you feel like you're about to fall over, and (this one helps a lot) lean in the direction opposite from the side you're turning on. If you're on a smaller, more agile sport bike like I was, the cone weave is a breeze.

  • @calcrappie8507
    @calcrappie8507 8 лет назад +100

    The test seems to vary widely state by state and country by country. I took my original motorcycle test in Alaska in 1976. The instructor sat at a desk inside a tiny building and told me to get on my bike and ride around the little building once. I did. I walked inside and he said I passed! I don't think he even looked up from the desk. In Minnesota (1984) it was completely different. Very difficult test. The lines on the figure 8 etc. were electronic and any touch would register as a failure. They had an electronic panic stop track where you had to reach 35 mph (electronic radar display in front of you) with a green light that would stay green until BANG it went RED. You had to absolutely dynamite your front brake (without lock up) to pass it. Lots of busted mirrors and turn signals had to be swept off the track because many flunked it badly. Many in line with me were on their 3rd or 4th attempt at passing the test. The ONLY way to pass was to crush your brakes and not dump the bike. The distance allowed for braking seemed like a postage stamp at that speed.

      +Dave Lee I don't know how it is now. I took that test in Eagan. I wouldn't worry about it, but do practice lots of slow speed weaving and stops in a parking lot before you test. Brake in a strait line and plant both feet at the moment of stop. I passed on a 1000cc Kawasaki and others were there on Harleys, so it is passable with practice.

    Damn im so nervous for my driving test this tuesday!
    But mine is more difficult, we have to do:
    1. Get a task about a part on the motorcycle u have to check details to know if its good enough for driving and explain the consequenses etc.
    2. Do a daily check of the bike, checking lights, signals, breaks etc as fast as u can.
    3. Do driving test on a track which includes, Countersteering in 80 km/h, 80 km/h emergency breaking, cone driving, turn techniques and breaking while in a fast turn.
    3. Driving test on the road, which is hard as fuck cause they fail you for details like possition, being too polite, driving too slow for long distances etc.

      The point of the test is to evaluate your basic riding skills. It is your responsibility as the rider to be careful and safe, not the government's job to protect you from yourself. If someone passes the test, immediately buys a liter bike and crashes it into a tree, it's their own fault. Squids can be squids all they want, they're only risking their own life.

    it does make you consider the ability of someone delivering a test when they apppear to be so stuck on having to read the script without being able to deliver it confidently and informatively.
    Also all of those lines and boxes on the site make it quite confusing for those taking the test.
    Surely a more professional location could be arranged.
    Whilst the test is not difficult, it would be nice if they gave the applicants the best chance of succeeding by improving their testing processes.

    Here in Japan, it's way tougher than this. First, there are two classes of licenses - up to 400cc, and over 400cc. When you come over from the USA with a motorcycle endorsement on your license, they'll only give you the 400cc version in Japan. To get the 400 cc version, you must take a 15 hour riding class at a certified driving school, that'll set you back about US $1200. When you finish, you then must then take the test on a course which you are required to memorize, which includes stopping on a hill just before the peak, going over railroad tracks (standing), weaving between cones, making an L shaped turn or two in a one meter lane with concrete barriers on each side, speed braking, and the hardest part - "ipponbashi", or "one line bridge". This is a platform which is about 6-8 inches wide, a few inches off the ground, but about 20 feet long. From a stop about 4 or 5 feet before you get to it, you ride on this platform until the end. You are supposed to do it in over 10 seconds, and to do that you must bring your bike to a crawl on the platform. If you do it in 8 seconds, you can still pass but if you fall off, you automatically fail the test and must come back on another day. The speed breaking part - they have a radar detector, you must bring the bike up to 40 kph as you enter cones then come to a very quick stop before you hit a line.
    It's a bit tough with a big bike but I passed it. To get the over 400cc license (think Harley), you need an additional 12 hours and $1200. All in all, it was worth it - makes you a better rider.

      +keeway4869 I was taught in the beginner rider course to turn the bike off by using the cutoff switch, then using the key. I think it will do essentially the same thing, but the cutoff switch lets you turn the engine off without taking your hands off the bar, then lets you turn it on again without taking your hands off the bar. I guess it is personal preference and the situation that you are in. If you just want to shut the engine off to talk to someone briefly then turn it back on, I would use the cutoff. If you use the cutoff all the time, you might start to forget to take the keys with you...

Where I live there are clubs who have members that will volunteer to help you learn to ride and some of them are minimal cost and some free. Gotta love the US of A.
    14 minutes of chit chat and 32 seconds of driving on a tiny bike, doing absolutely nothing traffic related at all. Yes, you were "braking", "obstacle swerve", "cone weave" - but this is not how you drive in traffic.
    When I took my drivers license here in Denmark (Scandinavia) it went down something like this:
    First of all, we have three different categories of drivers licenses, measured in engine size and age. 18-21 can only drive up to 250cc, 21-24 can drive up to 400cc and 24+ can drive anything.
    On the day of the test (after 29 hours of theory and passing the theoritec exam and 22 hours of driving), we waited for two hours fully dressed in 90 degrees until finally a 6 foot 5" fully dressed motorcycle Officer came to the school. One by one, (overseen by everybody else at the track that day), the Officer commanded us around the track with a walkie talkie. We did cones, full stop front tyre, full stop both tires, double evasize maneuver (cant recall the english word for this exercise), and everybody did all the exercises over and over until he was satisfied. I did my double evasize maneuver three times because he said I braked to early.
    When we had succeeded in the closed circuit track, about 45 minutes of "joy" riding, we drove in the traffic.
    60 minutes in rush hour followed by our teacher and a police Officer in a car behind. Giving commands every 30 seconds or so over walkie talkie: turn left, turn right, park here(even if its not allowed to park here, then just dont do or you would fail - he said to me park on a bus stop, lol).
    Everybody passed, but not one time did he smile or say good job. We all got this "You should join a safety course and get to know your bike on track days. Good day to you".
    I hated that guy - that day.
    Today I know he was freaking awesome, cus what did he do?
    He made damn sure none of us rookies thought we where the new king of the hill.
    Motorcycling is dangerous and to date I still have his voice in the back of my head when I think to much of myself riding my bike.
    I understand in the USA "its up to the rider to not buy a bike he cant handle". That will definatly NOT save lives.
    Stay low!

    • @TheGodDamnPope
      @TheGodDamnPope  10 лет назад +32

      The point isn't to save lives. The point is to hold riders' responsible for their own actions.
      Drinking alcohol can be incredibly dangerous, yet there is no test or rite of passage beyond simply turning 21. Wanna know why? Because people are expected to drink responsibly on their own.
      Theoretically you could save thousands of lives annually by lowering the speed limit everywhere to 20mph, but I don't think anyone thinks that's a good idea.
      Yes, the "US of A" is generally not a nanny state. People are allowed to decide for themselves what is in their own interest.

      I wish we could have done more in our basic rider course other than ride around in a parking lot. After I got my endorsement, my first time actually riding on a road I thought I was going so fast I was about to make the wheels come off of the bike. I looked down at my speedometer to realize I was only going 30.
      On the other hand, the emergency braking I learned in the BRC I took saved my life not even a month into riding when I topped a hill at night and a deer was standing in the middle of the road. So the course is useful for some things.

      ***** In my state it is considerably harder as well, there's something like a 50% failure rate for people who take the test without first taking a safety course. We don't have road exams because if you can ride a bike and maneuver at low speeds you can apply the same skills at roadway speeds (within the law of course) and you have to have your regular drivers license in order to get a motorcycle endorsement meaning that you already know the road rules. I wouldn't mind the both the car and motorcycle tests being much harder though, I'd rather drive with people who had to really earn it.

      This is only the skills test. First there is a course that you take that telly you about how to handle the bike, then you take the written test, then this(the skills test), and then a diving test on the street. The tests vary from state to state.

    I have some editing software, I've been working on learning how to use it. When I posted this I knew nothing about editing. You can still hear her if you turn your volume up a bit.

      OfficialVilky What if you the bike is not road legal? I have a 250f dirt bike. I'm guessing it won't be allowed.

      At the test you have to bring your own in MO, at the riders safety course they provide the bikes . At Harley-Davidson its called riders Edge and they provide the new Street 500cc bikes.
