  • @HydroFilmsProduction

    This exercise was the make or break moment for all of us during our test session. Right before examination, the instructor set up a mini course for us to practice on freely for about 20 minutes. I ran the U-turn like 5 times to try and get the feel for the balance, friction zone, and right amount of press on the rear brake. Because I KNEW if I failed this thing it would be because I didn't do the U-turn right.
    The day before I was turning so wide, kept dropping my feet, stalled the engine, I was too scared to counter weight.. It was overall very ugly. But moving into the 2nd day I managed to improve massively. On the final examiniation, I managed to stay within the box but ended up putting my foot down. The nerves were really getting to me and it also didn't help that I was first. I believe my mistake was I didn't have enough counter weight going on it. But thankfully, I didn't drop the bike and managed to pass the course.
    Unfortunately for one of us there, they dropped the bike on the U-turn and immediately my heart sank. I left that day feeling so sad despite getting my endorsement, mostly cause I had heard it was that students 2nd time around the course and you never want to see your peers fail. Could've easily been me as well if I had panicked and done anything else.
    I wish anyone luck who's got a rider course coming up. Bite the bullet like me and either put your foot down (if you happen to stay within the line) or even better cross the line and put no feet down. Just eat your points and don't drop the bike. You'll be fine, trust me.

    • @MotoJitsu
      @MotoJitsu  2 года назад +1

      Lol that’s actually not even allowed by the instructors to do that but it is the MSF and they do all kinds of weird stuff lol

    • @TheLouisianan
      @TheLouisianan Год назад

      I made that mistake of putting my foot down rather than going out of bounds. Failed by 1 point on the box and was told that I should've just gone out of bounds rather than put my foot down and I would've passed with an 89 overall (missed 1 point hitting a cone on the weave and aced the rest).

    Love your channel ! Your advice and then the people actually practicing what you are explaining is so, so important. I used to work in an office on the seventh floor across from a motorcycle and motor scooter dealer. I saw several new owners drop their beautiful machines before they got two blocks from the store - went too big before having experience and working up to that size bike.
    And remember - dirt bikes, street bikes, and scooters are not 100% interchangeable skills ! They have dangerous differences in required finesse situations. I'm 75 now, and I was an off-road guy mostly. Now my "speed" is a 150cc scooter, which I dropped the first week, in the gravel of a parking lot).....can't fling a scooter around like a motocross bike...:(( And without a clutch, scooters are in my opinion a bit tougher to control in emergencies.

    Well done, nicely explained. I had a hard time with this over the weekend, dropped the bike twice during the drill, but learned from it and passed the test. I dropped the bike because I wasn’t using the throttle at all, just relied on the clutch. I’m a big guy and was on a 250. I rolled the throttle a little and when I needed that extra power it was there through the clutch.

    Those are the keys to the box, been coaching it (MSF) for years, nicely done. When I do a static demo showing counterweighting and head turn I too stress that clutch, 1/4-1/2" is all you are working with. I find some struggle on the second turn as they coast through turn one and loose momentum, get them to let that clutch out a little and they make it through once and the confidence comes. Always good stuff on your channel.

    I just passed mine in Florida. It also helps the shift your weight from right to left on the seat. If you're turning right in the box shift your your butt to the left on the seat. Overall the test is a breeze and this part wasn't even that hard and I hardly have any riding experience.

    I look forward to practicing this when I get my bike on Monday. It was scheduled for me to get it yesterday, if the seat replacement was going to do the trick. I dressed up in proper attire with full helmet in hand sweating it as to how I was going to tell them that I really did not want to ride my bike home yesterday. The seat was a PERFECT fit, placed me exactly where I need to be. No other costly modification's required. I will implement the optional clutch of choice to reduce hand fatigue during practice and day rides. The reason why I did not want to ride my bike home yesterday was due to several factor's. It's Biketoberfest here this weekend and the dealership draws a large gathering. 1.There wouldn't be any available space to familiarize myself with the bike, and there wasn't. 2. Alcohol is served and I was concerned about pedestrian's not paying attention to where they were walking. I was pleasantly surprised that they understood my concern's and we agreed that it Monday is a better day for me to ride my bike home. The salesman was completely impressed by my self discipline because he said that he would be frothing at the mouth to get on and go out on a new bike, lol. The dealership has a huge parking lot, plenty of room to familiarize myself with the bike and do a run through on the basic technique's. Another bonus, I found out that it might be free for me to take the course because I bought a bike there. Honestly, I would prefer a practice environment set up that you do. I'd gladly pay you something for your time. With that said, I am also looking into private arrangement as an alternative option. On a lighter note, you make me laugh every time you say, "it's Harley, not sure which one it is though" yet, you know your metric import's. I am the opposite, I think, "it's a metric import, which one, I don't know" ... Thank you for another awesome video!

    You are so right when i first did it, i did not use the whole box, fearing I would go over the line. It was super tight and i touched the ground. Second time around i nailed it. Disagree about brakes. I used some rear brake to slow down a bit during the turn

      You can use the brake of course, I just recommend getting good without it first

    Nice channel !! Really help me to prepare my practice set up for Spring !! Ya we still have about 3 feet of snow here 😂!! Do you ship your book in Canada ? I would not ask for the French version 😜 but seriously that book could help me to gain some confidence with practice excersise with my new bike which I didn’t make a lot of mileage in the last 2 years. And thanks again for the quality of your videos 🙂 🏍

    Thank you for all your time and videos. Have helped me tremendously.
    Can you go over when to shift weight and counterbalance vs. when you should push and lean into a turn? Seems like an obvious answer would be speed, but as a new rider I still have trouble with this. Have been slow speed practicing and counterbalancing, but also practicing faster turns where I try to push and lean. Hope this question makes sense.

      Many variables determine what you do per corner...takes time and more training and more miles of practice.

    I used the friction zone and gave a touch of gas just before the turn, coasted on the clutch through the turn and then back to the friction zone for another touch of gas through the middle of my 8 and coasted through my other loop on my clutch. After I figured out this trick on the second day (really in bed the night after my first day) I never came close to a line again.

    this setup (20 feet wide) is in between the white belt (24 feet) and blue belt (16 feet) parking slots drill in your program. I can do the white belt practice quite smoothly but I have difficulties in the blue one (I cant lean the bike enough 'cause of too low speed, I suppose). I think this setup will do a smoother transition from white to blue. Thank you.
