I'm joining you on this journey. I have a B-flat whistle, and I'm about to order a Tony Dixon Low D. Thanks for the inspiration 😊

Welcome! It's great to have you. Have you been playing your B-flat long?

I've been messing around on B-flat for a few years, but not seriously. I played the bagpipes for 10 years, and I think this helps me. I can't contain my excitement about learning the low d whistle 😊

That’s great to hear. I’d love to know what you think of the Tony Dixon after you receive it. It’s one of the ones I’ve wanted to try and play. Yes, I am certain that being a piper helps a great deal. I’m visiting family in Pittsburgh, and I had a great time chatting with the friend who has been a piper for many years and who is now playing whistle some as well. His only comment was he finds that he does his ornaments in a piper style. There’s nothing wrong with that.

So glad I found you. I grew up taking piano lessons and then self taught myself the bass guitar. But recently fell in love with the low d whistle and now I am learning it with you. It is a bugger going from the second highest note on the scale to the highest-the one where you have to put all the finger down at once. any advice on how to master that?

Patience and persistence. 😂 actually, think back to your early piano days when you were teaching your let hand and right hand to do different things at the same time. With the high B, C Nat, C sharp, and third octave D you are balancing breath pressure with good hole coverage. It took me some time and now and then I still have issues. Fortunately, I need to play the C’s and the D when I run scales more than in tunes. I did publish a fingering chart a week ago and walked brought it. That may help. Some alternate fingerings are available that may help.
At times I thought I just had to blow harder, but at that time I realized how important covering the holes well is. All that is why I started off with patience and persistence.
Please keep me posted, and thanks for the great question. It’s a brick wall we all hit.

"dawning of the day" is also known as "raglan road" a song made a hit by the Dubliners (it's sometimes a march 4/4 sometimes a waltz 3/4

Indeed. I amazed by the number of names and settings each tune can have. Speaks to the strength of the aural tradition.

it helps me to think of the flesh of my fingers filing the holes - seen from inside the whistle the flesh looks like domes

      You are right.
It is good to think about it as sealing the hole with the fleshy bit of your finger. With the sax our concern was to push the keys. Now, we need to ensure the opening is covered or our tone will be bad.
There are times when you want to partially or gradually cover or uncover a hole, but for the most part using the fleshy bit of your finger to completely cover the hole is best.

@@LowDWhistle sax players have it easy! (only teasing) one thing that mentally bugs me with the whistle is i play the violin and the cello, and with these you shorten the string by adding a finger on it to get a higher note... on the whistle you add a finger and it lengthens the "string" or "tube" and gets you a lover note - sometimes part of my brain freezes over thar-t! lol
