Scott’s Low D Whistle Journey
США
Добавлен 25 май 2011
I have long loved Irish music, and have finally purchased a Low D Whistle. Please join me on the journey as we learn to play this beautiful instrument.
I have played the saxophone for many years, and this is my first step into an Irish whistle. I am convinced we can help each other not only to play, but to enhance our skills.

Communicating Mood as we Play our Low and High whistles
In this video I encourage us to learn to convey emotion and mood as we play our whistles. We are developing our abilities in playing the instrument, adding ornamentation, expressing emotion, and conveying the mood of the story that the tune represents.

Reflections from my First Session Playing both Low and High D Whistles
I so appreciate your videos and training tips. I’m going to start doing your recommendations on scale exercises
Thank you very much. I'm glad to hear. I know they will help. I'm just happy being able to share the things I'm doing myself.
Love the chanel, learning to play along with you 🎵🎵🎵
Stephen, welcome and thank you so much. I love having a community with whom I’m learning and whom I can help. It is so much fun!
I would love to learn Bachs flute sonata in E minor the andante
That is such a lovely piece. Hmmmm. There are some accidentals in the piece that are unusual for a whistle, but I'll see if I can come up with something that will work. I guess we could do some extra half-holing. I'll mess around with it and see if I can get it to work for us. Thanks for asking!
Great topic
Thank you - a favorite of mine.
Scott greetings from Ireland just wondering what low whistle are you playing it sounds beautiful.
So glad to have you. I’m playing a Howard low D with their balanced head. I really enjoy it.
No manipulation intended at all, but with the surname Howard, they should give you a deep discount
The room is an excellent enhancement to the whistles. Very enjoyable.
Thanks so much. When I want folks to hear the whistle without distortion I play somewhere else, but that is a really fun corner to demonstrate a great sound.
I almost didn’t watch the video about the Lir, because I’ve decided I don’t want any more whistles. I want to want the ones I have and play them and I could actually listen to your video and still decide I want to want the ones I already have and not buy anymore.
Great phrase. Yes, it is good to be confirmed in what you have. I felt like I should introduce it since it is new to the market.
Yes , it looks lovely and you deserve it, I do wish I could add it but… Truly, I can only play one at a time and my budget is limited. I have several, I want to be happy with what I have.
I agree. If I wasn’t doing the channel I would probably just have a couple. But I do enjoy trying them out.
Another excellent video. I pulled the trigger on a Lir Low D this morning, about an hour before I watched your video!
That’s funny. I hope you enjoy it.
I need to learn this song, you convinced me
It is so lovely, but I’m still working on playing it gently which is hard with the high notes
It reeeeally has a lot of similarities in appearance to an MK Pro
Indeed it does
Whoa, you got it?? Super curious about this video and how it compares to the MK Pro.
I’m looking forward to making a comparison video.
When I heard you first play a scale, I thought no, that's too much chiff for my taste, but after hearing you out to the end of the video I absolutely came around. However, as wonderful as it is for you to be in a position not to have to consider price, keep in mind giving that as advice may alienate some of your viewers who aren't as fortunate. Like it or not price is realistically a factor for many people in today's economy. Of course, if you really like the whistle, it's always fair to say you think the value is as high as the price. Thanks for all you do, I really appreciate getting to hear new whistles.
Thank you. I completely agree that price is definitely a big issue. I think that’s why I say put it on the list. If you have here you really like, get the least expensive. I am honestly spending more than I ever intended when I started. The Lir is clearer than many, and having borrowed one of their high ads I was imagining it would be a clean tone.
Scott you really need to get yourself an F whistle !!! lol honestly they are so gorgeous it's the nicest key in my humble opinion.
I know I need to, but too many low Ds to play. I need to,push it up my list
I got an F from Generation on the recommendation of FoolishFrankie's channel and his tutorial on the solo from Call me Al. I'm very happy with it, especially after applying some plastitac below the sound hole for the comfort of nearby ears who just might not feel like Paul Simon at the moment. 😅
Sounds like great fun!
Here's another thing, i now have the MK pro low d (powder coated ) the low G also powder coated and the low F (absolutely fippin gorgeous ) by MK . NOw the Low F is polished not powder coated and is slightly less mellow as a result, very interesting actually. MOst importantly it's not as slippy as the powder coated ones but the tonal quality is definitely different.
also the low G MK is difficult in the higher octaves it's hard to have consistency there (i'm getting better) it really wants good breath control. One of the whistle tutors in the facebook group said the same in his review on the MK whistles Ben Walker, if you do a search here on youtube MK pro whistle review Ben Walker whistle tutor you'll find it. Now i want the mezzo A also they are just gorgeous whistles. Got the F yesterday been playing that thing non stop since then.
That’s all great to know. Thanks.
Could you please play that side by side with the Kerry busker and the MK would love to hear the tones in comparison. Also try to explain the air requirements in comparison because i know the Kerry is very easy on the air.
I will definitely do that. Thanks for saying.
@@LowDWhistle look forward to that :)
With that curved windway at the top it looks a bit like they copied the MK? What are your thoughts there? I can say i have the high C lir and the mezzo A and they are both gorgeous to play and very easily hit the very highest notes very clear beautifully mellow at the same time and the air goes through like butter if you know what i mean.
The appearance is a good bit like the MK. I did at first take a look to compare them. It doesn’t have he same warmth in the tone, but the Lir plays so freely while still being expressive.
Wonderful to see timely and thorough whistle reviews. Lir is lucky to have people like Sean and yourself who are willing to experiment for the sake of all.
Thank you! It’s half of the fun, to be honest. I am just happy I could be one of the first buyers
Beautiful Scott. It’s great to see a young company with young energetic people over in the West of Ireland bravely entering into product development and serving the Music Community. Well done Lír. Look up the legend of the Children of Lír folks. We learned all about them in 4th Grade…a long, long time ago…thanks Scott.
My pleasure. I completely agree. Wonderful to see them jumping into making instruments for us all.
And yes, the Children of Lir is an amazing and fun story.
Hi. Bought me one of these. Sounds great, but it's made for a right handed player. I wasn't aware of that until it was too late to change the order. So, to all left-handed players, be aware of this. Luckily, my fingers are long and sinewy, so I can make it work with a little stretch. This may not be the case for some others.
Excellent point. I don't think he makes a left-handed version. Thank you for saying.
I'm a trained clarinet/flute player, so it drives me crazy to see fingers flying all over the place. My clarinet teacher told me that if you watch a really good player you will barely see the fingers move. As you say, just raise the fingers enough to get a clear tone.
Thanks for saying. I do find I tend to exaggerate the movement of my fingers when I’m demonstrating a tune. Otherwise I want them only moving just enough. Glad to have you in the conversation
Thanks so much Scott.
@@gerfagan thank you! I love the tune.
You are a whistle cheerleader
Yes, I will proudly wear the title of whistle cheerleader / encourager. I love it.
Excellent! Thank You.
Thanks!
I'm currently learning this, glad I've found this on your channel, I'm finding your channel quite helpful on my low d journey.
So glad to have you on the journey, and welcome! Glad you’re finding it helpful and this is definitely a beautiful tune to learn to play
Thank you for all the history. I had read the poem before, but I did not know the history.
My pleasure. It’s always good to know. We’re a tune came from if possible makes it much more interesting.
I’ve always loved this tune, Sinead O’Connor does a brilliant beautiful job with The Chieftains. That version is a must listen to. I’m so sorry she passed away so young.
I agree. I was going to use her version with The Chieftains as a prime example until I noticed that the Dubliners played it two different ways. You’re right. Her version is just amazing.
Question: how would you play this for the purpose for an accompanying of a singer?
In that instance I’d say you’d have to follow the singer’s lead. The instrumentalist is accompanying the singer, so it’s a game of follow the leader.
You know this one really well, I can immediately see how comfortable you were on the high d
Thanks. Yes, I felt very comfortable with this tune.
Nice idea!
Thank you for the passionate explanation of the historical context . Love Irish history and these tunes . Same with come out ye black and tans
My pleasure. I agree. Irish history and the tunes that tell the stories are amazing and captivating.
Not sure what it is about this one but I always slip up on the fingers on this… that said, I feel this is probably an air due to the mood, etc. I was going to try to mix singing and whistle/flute with this, but don’t have the skills yet.
I would love for you to do that. It sounds like it would be beautiful. Keep working toward it. I’m feeling air as well, but many who know more than I have called it a ballad or rebel song. I prefer either air or ballad.
6:58 Where did you find the Kerry D for $62? I only see it for around $125
Thank you for asking. It’s possible you’re looking at a different whistle, or someone is charging too much for it. I found it on the Kerry whistle website. Here is a link to the page: www.kerrywhistles.com/product-page/kerry-tenor-d
I hope this helps. Let me know if I can clarify anything or help in any other way.
@@LowDWhistle Ah yes I was conflating it with the "Low D" (Kerry Optima). Looks like I need to watch your comparison video on those!
No worries. It's easy to do. The Optima fixed head is $102 (ish). Listen also to some of Phil's videos on the Kerry Whistle website where he plays them each. Both the Kerry D and Optima play easily bottom to top. Yes. Listen to my comparison. It is hard to beat the Kerry D for the money. The Optima is a little more quiet with a slight buzziness. Both great options. I think it'd be down to the tone.
The Facebook group slow sessions sounds interesting, never heard of it, going to try that first I think!
I agree. I joined right away. Not tons of videos, but enough to enjoy and appreciate.
I guess a follow-up question: do you need to learn these mostly by ear? It seems that there are so many different versions to learn, it’s hard to know what to learn, then find out a different variant is played.
I know. SO MANY versions. I selected some tunes I knew, I assumed their version would be a little different. I played along as best I could and after a few times through I was OK. You hit on that big challenge - so many versions. You never know what you’re going to get, but that can make it fun. No harm since you are playing along with a recorded session.
@@LowDWhistle no trick to it then? Just gotta grab some versions and go then?
You're right. The PlayAlong Sessions RUclips channel provides an image of the music they are using. Otherwise we just have to listen a time or two and figure out how they are playing the tune. You will likely know the basics of the tunes, if you know the tunes, and you'll just have to jump in as you can. I play through a few times so that I am more comfortable by like the third time.
@@LowDWhistle guess it truly is good practice for the real in person ones then!
I definitely think so
Thank you!! Early too! Thank you for helping pave the way.
My pleasure. Helps me too!
Nick Metcalfe has just released a new album and it includes his version of this hymn.
I listen to the album this morning. His is such a beautiful rendition. Since he has been at a festival his store is closed for a few more days. I hope he took some time off to relax. I can’t believe I’ve never connected with him to get to know him and buy some of his whistles.
Canon in D
Thanks. Great suggestion
Beautiful done, thanks for the inspiration
My pleasure. So wonderful to find a good worship tune to share in the whistle.
Inspiring! gorgeous
Thank you. I hung out and played a few things. Just a great space.
Great room reverb
Thanks. It’s like just enough without being too much.
Well done, and all in one go!
Thanks. Definitely a rarity for me to do it all in one go. 😀
@@LowDWhistle it will get more common I expect ;)
I would like that, but the perfectionist in me will fight it and my discount video editing software doesn’t like big chunks.
A beautiful hymn played beautifully. Thank you. \\0//\\o//\\0//
My pleasure, and thank you. I agree, it is a beautiful hymn.
I purchased the new Kerry whistle to learn on and I'm very happy 😁. Got the hang of the pipers grip in a few days. Shipping was appx $22 from U.K. to Connecticut and it arrived in about one week and was very well packed.
That is great to hear, Paul. That whistle has to be the best whistle bargain going. It is a great whistle to learn on, to play. And to grow with.
Hi Scott, thank you so much for your, always bright and positive, encouragement. I have been learning the Irish high whistles for a few months now and following your path with interest. As a result, I have just ordered my first Low D whistle (a Kerry Optima) and can’t wait to get into playing (or at least trying to play) it. Also my thanks for providing the music sheet too which is extremely helpful. 😊
Thank you, Mark. I enjoy making the videos, and I really enjoy the community. Welcome to the journey. Let me know when you Optima arrives and what you think of it, i’. Certain you’ll be happy. The sheet music is also fun to make. Enjoy!
@@LowDWhistle Thank you Scott, I will and I will. 👍😁
Love this. Started to look into other types of music and tricks for the low whistle to branch out my knowledge. South African music Kwela using the Bb tin whistle was also one heck of a find.
Sounds fun. I’ll check it out.
That Nick Metcalfe Low D sells for $US99 so it would satisfy your criteria. I find it easier to play than my Kerry Low D and my Tony Dixon due to the holes 4/6 being not being in a straight line.
Ooo - thank you for saying. I need to get one of his. Funny thing is I was watching some of his content the other day. Thanks again
Excellent review and comparison. Great price point variation and explanations. I am a huge fan of anything Kerry, so I tend to agree with your conclusions.
Thanks. Yes, it is hard not to say, just go buy this Kerry whistle as your first whistle. Although the Goldfinch is also really nice. What I realize in conversations with folks is the others get a lot of love as well.
I took delivery of my Howard last week, my first low d. Starting to make progress, the hardest part was the pipers grip and the stretch. It feels natural every time i pick it up.
I’m excited for you. It does take some time to become comfortable holding the whistle and covering the holes. If you’re already making progress, then you’ll be great. Keep me updated.
Thought this was mostly just a concern for flutes actually. Oh, unrelated, any chance of going how to use the online "video sessions" you linked?
It is flutes more with regard to how rolling the instrument impacts the tone due to how the air moves over the air way opening. Yes, I can do that. Are you thinking (with the online sessions) of my going through and demonstrating playing along with one?
@@LowDWhistle Thanks. As for the online session I guess it would be just how to start effectively. It’s so intimidating
You are so right. That is a wonderful idea. Thanks for clarifying the question, and thanks for the great question. I’ll do that in a few days.
I’m thinking more about this and have started working on it. My goal is to have this video available Monday or Tuesday. This is such a great idea. Thanks again
@@LowDWhistle no, thank you! Looking forward to it. No rush or stress though!!
When I have a larger whistle that I seem to be moving my grip on I rotate the body of the whistle to the side of my mouth am playing from, producing better hole coverage. I leave the fipple in place. That usually works until I have found just the right spots for that particular instrument.
That is a brilliant idea. Thank you!
Ok, what’s wrong with me. I would love to play low whistle but on my Tony Dixon low D, I can’t get my hand position correct. Piper’s grip doesn’t work for me because I have small hands. So I just say F it and just go back to my D, Bb and A whistles. Help?
Thanks for asking. Which Tony Dixon low D do you have? I’ll check hole sizes and get back to you in a bit.
Also, is the main problem you’re experiencing the reach from the 5th to 6th hole? Or is it something else?
@@LowDWhistle kind of. But no volume at the lower register. My Tony Dixon is a little over 20 years old and is the tunable black plastic whistle.
