  • Playing the second octave on your low D whistle can be confusing and frustrating. In today's video I'll explain how the low D whistle works and tell you how to play the second octave.

Hi. I’m a new subscriber based in the UK and I’m loving your lessons. My new low D whistle arrived yesterday and your videos have been really helpful. So pleased I found your channel. Going to try the second octave today 😊

I am so pleased to hear. Which low D did you select. Enjoy venturing into the second octave, and be patient with yourself if moving higher into the second octave is not easy. It WILL come.

@@LowDWhistle I bought the entry level Tony Dixon before I saw your review. I know it’s not the best but one of the reasons I went for the inexpensive option was because I have small hands and wasn’t sure I would even be able to play it. It is a stretch for me but I can do it. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money if I wasn’t able to play it. It’s early days but if I improve I will invest in a more expensive whistle 🤞🏻. Thanks again for the time you take in making these videos they are super helpful

Thank you so much, Wendy. Please excuse the delay in replying. How are you liking the Dixon? I know a number of people for whom it is their favorite primarily because they have had it a while and are familiar with how it plays.

@@LowDWhistle Thanks for replying Scott, much appreciated as I’m sure it keeps you busy replying to all the comments as well as making the videos. I think the whistle is OK, I don’t think it’s the best tone. I’m struggling with squeaky notes, the E and D. But I think that’s down to me and my small hands. I have to get my fingers in just the right position especially if I’m going from a G to and E then down to D. That said it would be interesting to try a more expensive whistle to compare. But it’s early days. I shall persevere I still have a long way to go on my journey ☺️

Wendy, I enjoy the conversation with everyone. I'm learning things, and I'm helping others learn. One of my retirement hobby / projects I'm really enjoying. Some of the less expensive whistles can be a little more squeaky, but you are right not running out to buy another whistle without knowing if you will really like it. Do you live anywhere near where someone might have a different whistle you could try, or possibly a store that sells nicer whistles (which are few and far between in many places.).

Super helpful on cleaning up the tone by not overdoing it on the air pressure increase. It’s hitting the second C and third D that is really wiping me out…

Sound advice for sure ( no pun intended !) I would say though that some low D whistles are far easier to get into the second octave with than others. The easiest I have found so far have been the Chris Wood whistles - and by far the hardest ( sadly because its tone is for me the best) has been the MK Pro. Not all whistles are created equal I guess !

Thanks for saying, Roger. I like the pun. You are so right. I've not played a Chris Wood whistle. I'll have to check them out. Some whistles are harder to play in the second octave because of design flaws, but many, like the MK Pro, are harder to play in the second octave so that you can be more expressive. So interesting. I've heard some manufacturers say that you will need to tame the second octave on their whistle.

Thank you for this great video, very helpful and pleasant to watch! ♥
I just bought a G whistle and now I am experimenting a little bit with it. :) May I ask you a question? What is the highest note on your Low D Whistle you can play? On my G whistle it's an E (transposed to the D flute it must be a high B...all fingers lifted in the 2nd octave, exept the index finger), but whatever I try to do, I can't get any higher. So I ask myself, is it me...or the flute? 🤔😅
Keep up the great work, I am a new subscriber. 😍

Thanks for your comment, and welcome to the journey. I hope life is wonderful in Northern Germany.
Most folks talk about our whistles, playing too octaves. That would mean I should be able to play a low D, a middle D, and a high D. You actually can play higher, but that can be quite a challenge. Everyone with whom I’ve spoken, said that playing from the middle of the second octave upward was quite a challenge when they first started. This is true, even for people who are long time Woodburn players. It has a great deal to do with breath control and the pressure at which we’re blowing into the whistle. You don’t want to overblow as it’s called, but you do need a little more air pressure to get the higher notes. I believe the same is true with the flute, where you have to be even more careful about the angle of you are blowing.
It is most likely that you need to give yourself a little more time and practice. Even as a long time saxophone player it took me a while to become comfortable playing the top of the second octave on my whistle.
Hope that helps. Please feel free to chime in with questions anytime.
      Scott
