THANK YOU!!! I have played flute for about 7 years now and am about to start in college marching band which only marches piccolo so I went and bought one but was struggling with my embouchure a lot and your tips helped me SO much!
I have a concert this Friday and have to get the piccolo down fast , I’ve only ever played the flute so it was hard to play piccolo, my teacher never helped me so I’ve had to teach myself, this really helped me thank you so much :) !
Hi Angela congrats with your new channel - I currently play the concert flute and fife flute but not the piccolo. Incidentally, I play them only in the first two octaves (which is good enough for me). I'm a quick study when it comes to treble clef instruments; can you recommend a good fingering chart for the piccolo in the first two octaves? BTW: As for basics, can you please demonstrate the proper way to hold the piccolo with the right and left hand/fingers on their corresponding keys? This is a 'basic starter step' I'll need before I even begin. 😉 🎼 ♫
Hi Christopher, thank you for the comment and great question! If you already play the concert flute, you already know all the fingerings for piccolo - all fingerings for flute and piccolo are the same (except for alternative fingerings for intonation). So just don't equate it to fife, equate it to flute and you'll be fine! Great question on hand position. I believe I have a video on "how to play the flute" including where to put your fingers and put it together, but not one for piccolo, even though it's mostly the same, you bring up a good point. I'll get to it ASAP. Good luck!

This helped so much pls do a video on tuning some notes! My Ab I try to tune it everyday and it’s flat all day pls help I tried moving my head joint everywhere and I cant
Hi Layla! Sorry to hear about your tuning issues - I'll definitely make a video! Have you checked your headjoint cork first? If just one note is flat, moving your headjoint won't help, and can mess up the rest of your tuning!

Jenny, in the meantime, when it comes to piccolo embochure - there are different schools of thought, but I use the same embochure as I do for flute. The aperture is smaller for sure, but how I set up for flute and piccolo is the same: I make sure that the back edge of the embochure hole is underneath my lip in the same spot.
@UC9Y0bjMZa8YTJo3t59yGaYQ I know the Lowest note on the Piccolo Flute is D above Middle C, sometimes Piccolos can play down to Middle C (someday to G below Middle C giving it the same range as a Treble Violin) just by using an Extension joint. Because the fingerings are the same, it's actually just as easy to play as a C Flute, you need earplugs because it plays higher than a C flute. Piccolos come in 2 keys C (as in the video), & D flat (if you ever heard stars and stripes for ever, it basically transposes the piccolo part down a half step to a more beginner friendly key)

All piccolos.noe come only pitched in C, Db is very rare (despite what Sousa wrote for, they were not common then and are extinct now, but that is a different conversation) Piccolo CAN go to low C even without an attachment (which is rare- I've been playing 25 years and maybe seen an extension once?) To hit a low C you can cheat by putting your pinky over the end of the piccolo to lower the pitch. Works in a pinch but not on the regular (which you won't see unless arrangers are unfamiliar with the range of the instrument)
Because generally piccolo is not taught unless you have a good basis on sleep first. The fine motor skills need to be developed usually to get a good sound on a buffalo. In my teaching experience you only come across natural pickle players once in a blue moon at 6th graders. You can still take the tips I give you here and then look up my video on how to play the flute and you should be able to get a good sound. Generally when learning piccolo people want to pinch and that's exact opposite of what you need to do, so if you have a good basis on having a very relaxed embouchure while you play flute that will transfer well to the piccolo. Keep me updated!
Haha, I'm sorry about that, I feel your pain! You just have to do the best you can to make a bad one sound good, so when you get a good one you'll sound amazing!

@@AngelaMcCuiston That's kind of a stretch for me, I'd prefer the extra keys because it'll produce a warmer sound.
