Hi. I’ve been a penny whistle player for over 15 years and never upgraded beyond a few variations of the basic D Feadog. After watching your video I’ve just ordered a Clarke which sounds amazing. Thanks for the re-invigoration which your outstanding videos bring!
@@lyncharose7912 clarke original requieres a lot of air, and its really hard to play jigs and other fast melodies with clarke original. i play it for almost 2 months.
I started learning the recorder and the violin, then realized that both are heavily used for folk melodies, well it's usually a whistle but recorder works the same, except it has two double holes at the bottom, has& finger holes instead of 6 and a thumb hole slightly further back so you don't sound flat in the upper register, but essentially if I ignore the bottom C or E and never uncover the thumb hole, hey, I'd say the whistle is diatonic vs the recorder being chromatic but you can play a whistle chromatically or even microtonally by half holing it!
@@5688gamble I strongly prefer the recorder. I wonder if you (or the very talented presenter) could compare them? I find the recorder so easy to play, but whenever I try on the whistle it blows my ears out, so I can't even begin to practice.
My MK pro low D whistle arrived today and it plays beautifully. I am glad that I reached deep into my pockets to purchase it; well worth the investment. Thanks for being on youtube.
What an enjoyable presentation. The whistles were interesting, but the presenter was amazing. She is talented, lovely, and has a wonderful outgoing personality. A pleasure to watch.
I started playing with the clarke sweet tone whistle which certainly is easy to get consistent sound from. My favourite is the Clarke conical whistle with the wooden plug which is tuneable by heating glue and moving the plug a bit. I also own various generation whistles but find most to be shrill except the b flat which is lovely. Feadogs and various other cheap whistles are located in numerous locations because you never know when you need to play a tune or two. Waiting in the parking lot or for road delays etc. I bought a soprano d and low d from mike Burke whistles. Very nice tone but the low d is easy to overblow and sometimes a little stubborn in the bottom end. Overall I’d say learning to play is a great pass time and stepping off point to play Celtic music on other instruments plus a whistle is easy to carry along. Being a by ear musician I’d say buy the basic book that comes with a cd so you can hear what you should sound like is the best advice. This plus never mind music critics because you will be squeaky and shrill in the beginning. Cheers from Canada
Thanks for the video. With my MK low D I glued a patch of non slip rubber where my right thumb goes. It makes a world of difference to the slipperyness of the tube.
MK PRO is top notch, whistle so nice and warm. I bought it 3 weeks ago after watching you video, and wanting to replace my Goldie for that flute tone. And wow I low it. Thank you so much for such informative video. Now my Goldie is already sold. And I just love this whistle, but is definitely not for beginner, because it requires good air flow control. But I love it way more then any other whistle I know. Thank you Cuttie, and keep your videos coming.
Thank you for the reviews! I had a bit of trouble with the weight and slipperiness of my MK Pro until I bought some Monster Grip plectrum grips. They're small, self-adhesive silicone pads, and one under each thumb makes a big difference. Been using them for over a year now, and the adhesive hasn't marked either of the whistles I have them on. I've no connection at all with the manufacturer, I'm just a whistler with arthritis. 😊
MK's are awesome. I have a low D and Low F pro models which are tuneable. They are one of the easiest low whistles to play because of the closer finger spacing. They sound great as well. I was lucky enough to meet Misha in Glasgow when I dropped in on a session while at a conference. I was showing the locals and one of then said Mish is standing at the bar having a beer. So I met 'my' maker! Nice fellow
Twenty odd years ago I was playing a gig during the interval an elderly chap approached the band and gave us all a special edition Clark C whistle he was one of the owners of the Clark whistle company. I still have it haven’t tried anything better other than my Dave Williams ebony D flute.
I prefer Susato Whistles. They have a very clear tone, adjustable for tuning, and they come with thumb rest to hold them up. The rests really help with the low D whistle.
I brought a tin whistle after watching your videos. I learn For the love of a princess on the day I brought it. After seeing your Low D I feel like investing in one
Hey so glad I found your video. I just started to play my Low D Alba again and after hearing you play on the Low D MK Pro I got totally excited. I might get myself one of those. I know a few Japanese songs that would sound amazing on the MK Pro. Thank you!
I totally agree about the niceness of the Clarke Original. My love for it is why I use a woodblock when making my whistles, even though my customers beg me to use a different fipple material. Wood block just feels like part of the soul of the instrument imo.
I love it. Can't beat a wood block :) really rounds off the sound! Plus, it makes for the perfect instrument when learning to play - especially if you don't want to ruin your relationship with the neighbours ;) Clarke have a special edition '200' traditional whistle in nickel - might just have to get it... Pop a link to your etsy shop below - I'm sure everyone would love to take a look at your whistles :)
Well, I didn't mean to advert myself, but since you kindly offered here is a link to my current pre order listing on Ebay. Don't really use Etsy anymore. Always happy to help a fellow blower! Besides, I might want one...they're rather addictive. I'll be sure to watch through your videos to get an idea of how they sound. Plus, you could always subscribe as a thank you ;) hehe
Clarke was my first whistle, as well. I love the throaty sound of the wood fipple. I completely agree about the lung requirements, though. Now, I mostly play a Tony Dixon (my favorite, soundwise, and allows for some accidentals not easily played on other whistles) or a Susato (better for playing in pubs, where more volume is required) - both good whistle models, both tunable.
Stephanie, this video is definitely in my top five favorites… it’s one that has it all… that’s why you have so many comments… it’s very educational for beginners or potential whistle buyers and it is definitely somewhat of a performance video… the way you can play all those whistles is amazing… and you are so perfectly beautiful in this one… there is no other way to describe the way you look…you’re just perfectly beautiful! Thanks for the advice. I make a lot of videos on SEO for clients in work so thankfully I know a little bit about it! :) I'm not really here for the fame though :p just for the fun of it! And I like offering people something different to play, rather than the same old tin whistle tunes. That's precisely why I started the channel, I got bored of the same old songs played over and over as if no one could think of anything different or new to do...I'll never understand the appeal of repetition when there's so much to be explored! :D
I got a tin whistle a couple months ago to be able to play Fee Ra Huri for a school thing, I can tell you just watch some videos and fuck around on a whistle and you'll learn in no time. Whistles are much easier than most other instruments I've found to play.
Beautiful playing...my grandfather played...I am a harmonica player wanting to learn whistle. What I truly loved besides your playing was the impartial reviews...few can do that. Cheers
Jase Tunney Thank you 😄 glad you liked the video. Lovely that your grandfather played. My grandmother used to play piano but she's had arthritis for years... It was always lovely listening to her though. Guess you gotta learn while you can! 😉
Love the sound of the green one - I have a Chieftain low D and it is gorgeous, Just ordered an alto G from Shearwater so we'll see how it is. Love your review and your infectious smile :)
I love looking at whistle collections!! I have the MK Pro Low D as well. Also and MK Pro Low F.. A whistle I like as much as the MK is the Burke Low G/alto.. It sounds a bit pure.
Eric James I'll be growing my collection 🤣 everyone agrees it's a very addictive hobby! I have a new whistle on the way. A bass Bb. I wanted to try Alba but they weren't very accommodating, so I went for another Shearwater - not a polymer this time though! Hoping to branch out to different brands though ideally...
You play wonderfully... and make it look so easy. I really like the tunes you played and you've inspired me to start playing my flutes more and to try some different styles. In the meantime, I look forward to watching this review some more and checking out other videos on your channel. Thanks for the fun.
I found that it helped my original Clarke whistle to oil the wooden block. The wood is soft and quite porous, so oiling it makes it less absorptive of water condensation from the player's breath, and works to firm up the tone and response overall.
I have played the whistle 60yrs inc all you demo,my favourite all time whistle is the D chieftan.l paid £100 yrs ago.it is a large bore aluminuim giving a flute like tone and payed for itself in a fortnight busking.
I always wanted a chieftain whistle, but every time I went to buy one I always come accross a review saying not to bother for some reason or another...too much chiff, large air requirement, muffled sound in comparison to other whistles. I always thought they looked and sounded great though!

hey i was wondering what do i have to search to buy the MK Pro im having trouble finding the one u have also do u know any other ones i should probably get i want to play jumpy happy soulful music thank you and i hope u reply
Thanks for your very nice review. I feel like I am following in your footsteps. I bought my first whistle 8 months ago and caught the bug. I have my share of Generation and Clarkes as well as a Dixon Low D. But my favorites are a Low D and Low E, both bamboo which gives a really nice rich low soft sound. Anyhow I though I'd post a kindred spirit, good luck with your progress and hope you're having as much fun at it as I am.
Jim Sande Thank you 😄 indeed, I'm having lots of fun, glad to hear from another enthusiast. Where did you get your bamboo whistles? I have a bamboo Chinese flute, but it's a completely different sound - less mellow and rounded than my other whistles.
My bamboo whistles are from a flute maker in Canada (British Columbia). I love them, the sound as well as the feel and look. Your MK is very beautiful and sounds amazing. I will check to see if they ship to Canada -- I may have to start saving for one.
I've been to British Columbia - but unfortunately that was before my whistle playing days - I'll be sure to keep an eye out for some bamboo flutes when I next visit!
I have one coming from Amazon that is a Clarke Celtic D whistle, good reviews on there, hope it'll be a good starter! Nicely designed and glad to hear Clarkes can be good.
@@CutiepieTinWhistle Thank you! It's kind of a shame that I'll have to get different ones to play along to certain songs in key but oh well. I have subbed and look forward to learning more from you!
Hello Mrs. Cutie pie, Everyone seems to like and prefer this video. I must say that it's one of your best. Simply because its very educational and you look fantastic. I prefer your creative performance videos. But I'm not quite sure which one I like the best. I do find myself watching the Moon River video a lot. Anything romantic will probable be one of my favorites. The Titanic theme is a romantic song. I'm looking forward to that one. I've been working on that one myself. Thank you for all that you've done and all that you will do.
I love all the standard whistle tunes such as Danny Boy, She Moved Through The Fair, Loch Lomond, The Rare Ould Times, Blind Mary, Greensleeves, Down By the Sally Gardens, etc.
Many years ago I saw “ The Chieftains “ live on stage and fell in love with the sound of the Penny Whistle,( my Grandmother was from Cork ). I taught myself on a Clarke original. I really should practice and play more. The sound of the old Celtic pieces are amazing and speak directly to my soul.
Haha! Yes, I know the feeling. I've just got a bass whistle, which is EVEN bigger - the finger stretch is outrageous - but it'll come with perseverance! :) i hope...
3:55 By paying a bit more for your whistle you are rewarded with a far better sound. I made some starts with a cheap one after I got me a CLarke. I believe this is where you should begin if you seriously think of making music. The MK ist just gorgeous by this warm sound.
It's the plastic part that makes it so raspy. The plastic mouthpiece ones can be put in hot water for just a short while to loosen up the glue that holds it to the metal so that they can be made tunable. I guess you already know that though.
....IMHO: That "Low D" green whistle sounds Wonderful!!!! S smooth, and soft, and clear!!! = Beautiful!!! Just a hint: double up a few large rubber bands, and slide them down the barrel, into the position needed, to provide a usable "thumb rest"!
Cutie pie, you look like an angel and play like an angel. I make quenas out of hardwoods. The flute of the andies. I would give you a tuned P.V.C. flute. It has a notched blowing edge and many people have trouble with it. Once it is mastered, quenas have lots of expression.
I have a Quena 😊 I'm useless at playing it though 😆 I'm convinced my chin isn't the right shape to be able to play it, haha, though it's probably just laziness and lack of technique!
Thank you so much for this review it has made me decide to order myself the Clark penny whistle with wooden mouth. It is exactly the sound I was looking for. ❤️
Didn't know that whistles needed warming up, that might be why My sweettone Clarke sounds like it does since i dont play much and usually stop practising after like 5-10 min
You have some great whistles there, I have a few and I love my standard sized(which I now know is a suprano from watching your videos ☺ 👍) sweetone D definitely lives up to its name lol. Iove your Misha summers one! 😍 I'm glad I subscribed to your channel ☺ as although I already play, I've never really knew all the terminology and what notes I'm playing as I have always played by ear. Thanks for showing us your awesome collection 👍
My favourite of mine is my low D burke, but I recently bought a ShearWater in K key and I'm quite pleased. About the cheap ones I prefer the brass with red piece cos they're sweeter than the blue ones which I find too harsh.
Wait. If you need to 'warm up' these whistles that means the bores were drilled into it hot. So why don't they just drill the finger holes cold so you can play them straight out the box? Doesn't make any sense. Or is there some weird assumption that blowing through it will warm it up over time? So they drill them warm? DO they drill them warm? That'd be such an expensive process from a manufacturing POV. Idk, call me skeptical.
Awesome! Finally have a trailer that I can escape to when I want to be alone. Won't make the dogs howl that way and the wife won't bug me by turning up the radio... I have picked up the tin whistle so many times throughout my life but never got any further than the scale... and I'm not very good at that either. Hope your video tutorials help. Love that Low D MK Pro...
Love your channel, I love the tone of the MK Pro. I have the Clarke in D, with the wooden tip it does give a softer sound which I favour over the plastic mouthpiece whistles. Still learning, and will be spending time on your channel :)
Thanks for being a guru on this. I'm totally noob but so long as I die me an old man with some floutin' skills, I'll be toutin' my way under and over. I'm scoping that MK pro in D, looking for quality at this point and the best range of notes, flats and sharps. Have you covered Salterello for us yet? Are D whistles not ideal for this?
@@CutiepieTinWhistle I've looked at a lot of different versions, but is the Dead Can Dance cover available within key? That's the version I could probably get my medieval jug band on.

You can always commission tutorials too if you want to guarantee your request gets covered. It costs around £30 and you get a tutorial, printable tabs and MP3 cover of any tune you like 👍 X
Could you tell me if I'm on track to play the low D. I can get all the notes, but more often than not, they still squeak and I find it difficult to place all my fingers over all of the holes at the same time. I am using a Tony Dixon one piece low d which I bought two or three weeks ago.

Beautiful! The whistles were nice as well.

Kendra Dehnert it's Kagome's Theme 😃 you can see it here:

If you'd like tabs let me know 😀
CutiePie hey love the Kagome's theme, would like the tabs or notes if you can? :)
Hello again! Tabs are now listed in the description of my Kagome's Theme video :) my apologies for the delay - modern life has many requirements that get in the way of the fun stuff ;) x

Like how you saved the best for last, beautiful tone of the MK.
Lovable :-)
I just got a Low D from Clover Flutes and I really like it, i may take a while the shipping but it was worth it.
You are beautiful.
Love the MK Pro .... You're superb! Thank you for this video!
It looks like a painting in motion. So beautiful 😍
Enjoyed the clip and the honest advice which is always helpful. Thank you.
I found one in a building that I own & am remodeling. The building was built in 1896, so the whistle is probably much older. It’s made in England
Oh very nice, hope you liked BC. Happy whistling. :)
I love the sound of the original D clark and the MK pro ♥ definetly going on my wish list
I have one coming from Amazon that is a Clarke Celtic D whistle, good reviews on there, hope it'll be a good starter! Nicely designed and glad to hear Clarkes can be good.
Should be great! I hope you enjoy learning to play 😊
That original clark penny whistle with a wood block is the first one I ever played as a kid. I still have it, the gold design is half worn away.
Great reviews and playing. Keep playing! Keep posting!
Thank you James :) any suggestions for tunes you'd like to hear would be much appreciated!
I love all the standard whistle tunes such as Danny Boy, She Moved Through The Fair, Loch Lomond, The Rare Ould Times, Blind Mary, Greensleeves, Down By the Sally Gardens, etc.
I'll see what I can do for you! Keep an eye out for a traditional medeley soon. x
The Original Clark whistle in the states cost $29 , I’m thinking of buying one ...Nice review ..thanks 👍
A perfect video: clear, informative, and some lovely playing. Thank you!
Thanks for the reviews. The finger stretching reminds me of playing Dave Matthews on the guitar.
Thanks! I just finished looking at the MK Whistle site.
I love the soft tone of my sweet tone. Also love my Clark but the wood comes out and easily bent
I really appreciate you making this video because I now want to start learning myself! Thanks for making it so clear. Subscribed!
the green one is just awesome
Oh my! The MK Pro I’ll be getting in the future for sure but not spending the money now. I am however ordering a Clarke Original now though
That MK Pro is beyond gorgeous! :) and £250 ain't bad at all for a good instrument. I want to play low whistle one day 😊
Thank you so much for this review it has made me decide to order myself the Clark penny whistle with wooden mouth. It is exactly the sound I was looking for. ❤️
I have an alto A from Shearwater, It was affordable and sounds really great, now I really want a bass Bb they do
I had the bass Bb, should be a video on it here somewhere 😊
@@CutiepieTinWhistle I may consider to order one. It is a key I compose in a lot I have an alto Bb.
hello stefanny, ¿whath is the name of the green flute, min 6:57? greetings from Michoacán mex. im sorry my english is bad.
Nice little demo 👍
Very helpful! I was thinking about buying a Tin Whistle and learn to play. Love the sound!
Beautifully melodic Stephanie .
Few people play Whistle in Taiwan. Your play is very cool!
I just loved hearing you play
Hey I have the clarke original as well! The wooden block is actually loose right now so I ordered a new one to replace it.
PlasmaCoolness when you have your new whistle, be sure to glue the wooden block in your old whistle. Always worth trying to save it 😄
07:36 Amazing I love that melody. You are incredible and from now on I admire you a lot. 😍
Yeah, is Kagome's Theme ruclips.net/video/OrUEZHqG_OU/видео.html

Well done! My collection of penny whistles is much like yours. The Low D is my favorite, without question.
Thanks for this video. You have a lot of whistles. And I like the green low d whistle more, the sound is perfect for my ears ^_^
I haven't covered Salterello, but send me a link to a version you like on RUclips and I'll check it out 😁 x
@@CutiepieTinWhistle I've looked at a lot of different versions, but is the Dead Can Dance cover available within key? That's the version I could probably get my medieval jug band on.
@@_swordfern you could always transpose it to D if it doesn't currently play in D 😊 I'll try and take a look for you, though it's a little busy here right now with Christmas requests 🙈.
I am using a Tony Dixon one piece low d which I bought two or three weeks ago.
wow i never saw that small instrument. thanks for sharing with us.
That MK Pro is lovely.
Thank you so much. Now I know I want a low D whistle!
