A Faster Way to Learn Korean Numbers | Tutoring My Brother

  • With only half an hour, I taught my younger brother the Korean numbers. He learned how to count using both Sino-Korean numbers (일, 이, 삼) and Pure Korean numbers (하나, 둘, 셋). We also talked a bit about when and where each system is used, and some tricks for memorizing the numbers.

      50 - 쉰
      60 - 예순
      70 - 일흔
      80 - 여든
      90 - 아흔
      51살 = 쉰 한살
      99살 = 아흔 아홉살
      100 = 온 but usually use 백 (sino-korean)
      132살 = 백 서른 두살

    Fun Fact: in Choson Korea when a coronation was taking place korean officials shouted 천세 which literaly means 1000 years.만세 means 10,000 years and was used for the chinese emperors until 고종 made 대한제국 or in English the Korean Empire✨😆🇰🇷😉

    Next, time you should teach him family vocabulary. Like mother, sister, nephew. Oh! And then have him draw a family tree and write the family members' names in it. EXAMPLE:
    엄마 --- 아빠

    언니/누나→남동생→여동생
    I know it's not a good family tree, but I can't do very good with this keyboard. I'm sure you get the idea, though. I know he said that he likes to talk about his family, so maybe you could keep this in mind. (그리고 삘리가 대단한 선생님이에요!)

    Why does korean have such an organized system and then all of a sudden they just throw 10,000 in there. You can’t just say 10 one thousands? Instead of saying 10 ten thousands you could just say 100 thousands. Or instead of saying 100 10,000s that’s when you could make the new number
    The system makes sense because 100 is 10 10s, so they make a new word. 1000 is 100 100s, so they make a new word. but 10,000 is only 10 1000s. Instead of the pattern of 1000 1000s. They break the pattern for no reason at 10,000😭
