    The most underrated part of any MacBook IMO is that they run as well off battery power as they do when they're plugged in. That's very important, especially for someone on the go. I learned the hard way when I bought a surface pro 4 several years ago that even that thin and light device with no dedicated graphics ran poorly off battery power and just fine when plugged in.

      I got in around 2015 a MacBook Pro 2010 (one of the best notebook at its time and without dramatical failures like the 2011+ GPU failures.) for 400$, the owner even replaced the battery at apple before he sold it. Still working awesome in 2020, got like 3 weeks ago also a new battery (Yanec, damn awesome batteries, +400mAh/6Wh compared to original battery)
      I dont know why so many people still believe used apple products are so expensive, they are not, you only have to find a nice deal, which is hard to find since some Mac users even try to resell their 1-2 year old MacBook for like 80% of the original value to get "for cheap" the newer model. I found so many like 3-5 year old macs, working ofc for cheap, especially from the users which hate the overheating/soldered SSDs and the bullsh*t apple is doing to prevent the users from fixing their own "Pro" products.
      Thats why i even say the newer MacBook Pros dont deserve to be called Pro... any professional usecase will include:
      - service, which is some sort of impossible at apple machines
      - data recovery, say hello to the T2 chip and soldered SSDs, data recovery is going to be impossible
      - battery swaps/Ram upgrades.... something you should consider in a "Pro" product....
      With this facts in mind, the last MacBook "Pros" were made in around 2013, newer MBPs are not "Pro" anymore, only some kind of nice looking notebook with decent performance. Therefor, the prices are dropping faster compared to older Macs. But yes, still very often overpriced.

    • @thomasvartanian5949
      @thomasvartanian5949 4 года назад +1

      @@0xC272 I agree that we do not buy a laptop for resale value, but it's great to know that when you're ready for an upgrade, you can actually get value out of it. Like the MacBook Air 2012 I own, it performs today like I bought it yesterday, and if I wanted to sell it, the price (8 years later) for a used one trends at $450-$500. So if I wanted to buy the newer $1,000 MacBook Air, I could save $500; that's half the price. Fair?

      @-- Ye, it's why in most big tech companies offices are filled with ThinkPads (running Linux) and MacBooks. If you have to rely on that tech and have to pay your employees significant wages, any downtime due those devices failing costs you quite a large amount of money, more than the initially higher investment. I think IBM even released some numbers regarding MacOS and Windows laptops and found that MacBooks amortized themselves big time over the years, if you factor tech support and down-time into the equation.

    I got the MBP 16 and I absolutely love it. It's my first Apple product (not counting an iPod nano). I'm a grad student and my research requires lots of coding, so having 8 cores 16 threads for parallel jobs, a unix OS, and fantastic gestures for multitasking make it perfect. There were times when a class assignment took >10 minutes on my friends computers, but took me a minute once parallelized. I've previously had to dual boot windows and linux mint, or get ubuntu on windows which has it's own problems, but with mac OS, I don't need linux. The speakers and microphone are outstanding and I've never had such large battery life on a laptop. The graphics can easily handle 3D modeling software like Fusion 360 and you can tell Apple notices what their customers are doing cause you can natively view 3D .stl models in finder. The screen color temperature auto adjusts to your room so well that you'll not want to go back to your windows displays (which are either slightly blue, or really yellow in night mode). I set up bootcamp, and sadly a few features of the touchbar don't seem to work there, but it's otherwise perfectly fine. I was able to run COD WW2 with medium settings at the max 60 fps, although COD can't be a great experience at 60 fps IMO. The keyboard is very quick and responsive. The laptop does run quite hot when doing any intensive task, and of course I would have preferred having internal access to the ram and storage like you do with many Windows laptops, but that wasn't gonna happen with Apple.
    I will say that if you're not planning on making use of the multitasking or coding-friendly features of Mac OS, or if you plan on actually gaming with it, you should probably save money and get a Windows machine with NVIDIA graphics.

    I've been a dell laptop user for almost 7 years (inspiron to xps). My only issue is always the same. After 2 years of using a dell laptop there could be a sticky liquid leaking located on the lower part of the screen near the hinge. When it comes to macbook pros, my issues are rubber lining and lcd panel. When the rubber lining is damaged; let's say due to heat during clamshell mode, using of alcohol near rubber lining, or screen protectors. There is a chance that dusts, small rocks, or small materials can be trapped near the location of the damaged rubber lining, and when you close the macbook it could damage lcd screen. First it will show black lines and then after a week it will be entirely black screen. This happened to me before, a small particle of my comb got stuck near the rubber lining and when I closed my macbook, it did permanently damaged the entire screen. Just want to point out that these are based on my experience. I don't have any intentions on discouraging anyone to buy these wonderful devices.

    Hi Tom,
    I got my XPS 17 a few days ago and two issues with it, of which one is maybe comparable to yours. My left speaker seems to be broken. It does play sound but very distorted, like the membrane has ripped. The sound via headphones is good though and I think you should have tested that, too.
    Second issue is my CPU fan, which only works occasionally. When it first turned on, I had a very high-pitched noise which was close to make me a bit dizzy, so I turned it off immediately and opened the chassis. Both fans are not obstructed mechanically and if you start the laptop while the bottom is removed it starts into diagnostics automatically. Just to find out "CPU fan not responding".
    I am having a Dell service engineer over very soon (since I don't want to wait another three weeks for delivery of a replacement device) who will replace both fan and speaker. But since that the fan works occasionally, I have the feeling the motherboard might be the root cause (hope not).

      This is true, but this is due to the fact that the Dell is using 10th gen chips, and the Mac is using 9th gen

      It does not matter. As he says the performance difference is likely too small to matter in everyday use and if performance would be that important you likely would fare better by using cloud infra and doing the heavy lifting there anyways. It's not that one of them play in an entirely different league performance wise.

    underrated for the dell is upgradeable memory, and 2 upgradeable internal ssds, true touch and stylus support, Nvidia support, Sd card, 4K+ super sharp screen, lower repair cost, face id and touch id, hundreds if not a $1000 saved if equipped the same.
    Safer future buy with new cpus, and no worry of Dell going to Arm processors and abandoning intel anytime soon.

      When I asked Dell, they said their touchscreens don't work with a stylus pen. Are getting one to work with the XPS?

    One of the best MBP16 & XPS17 head to head comparison I have ever seen.

    I've seen these compared before and side-by-side, the displays are showing very different colours. The XPS seems to have a magenta cast while the Macbook has a green one. I'm not sure how they can both be considered so colour accurate when they're glaringly different from each other.

    Great video, thanks
    I’m on the fence to buy my first laptop for photography editing, Lightroom and photoshop. I have the budget for either one. Just can’t make up my mind.

    You didn't address what would be one of the most important considerations: using Mac OS vs Windows. I have both laptop platforms but would never select Windows over the Mac OS. Nearly every day I encounter something on my Windows (Lenovo) laptop that needs addressing. That happens to me with my MacBook Pro one tenth as often.

    Someone were blowing that compressed air into that Dell... but really software or hardware, they gonna need to patch it ASAP. Until then, saving up for MacBook Pro.

    Both of these laptops are great but there are just a few small things holding them back - one the Dell side, some of the recent QA/QC issues are alarming - namely, the wobbly trackpad, some displays with dead pixels being shipped, and reported battery drain while plugged in on higher load tasks (might be a deal breaker for some workloads). One other one for me is that there is no version with AMD chips which would be amazing given their higher price-to-performance this gen. On the Macbook pro side, its the higher cost of the device paired with the expectation of better performing and cheaper ARM-chip Macbook Pros coming in a year or two. Non upgradable parts is annoying too (although this is likely something you have to live with for all Non-Mac pro devices in the future). I would say, wait for the next gen for both of these devices if you can as there are major positive catalysts for improved performance on both ends - Dell: better QA/QC, potential for AMD chips (probably cheaper too), much better GPUs on the horizon with Big Navi and Ampere; MBP: ARM chips (potentially cheaper) and Big Navi GPUs.

    Many thanks for the helpful review. I am a Windows user, who thinks that the Mac will be the future after sorting out its own silicon processors. Would you agree with that? And, did you move to XPS 17 as you were contemplating? I would love to see XPS 15 17 comparison. Thanks again

    • @apf14378
      @apf14378 4 года назад

      I do think making their own processors will be their tomb. You cannot be the best on chip desing, software design, hardware design all at the same time. Fighting android, fighting windows, fighting nvidia, intel, amd, even dell or many other integrators...even adobe and microsoft office... or microsoft direct x... you simply can't win, even if you manage to be the best on all those aspects for some years. They went up when they abandoned their own risk architecture and go for intel. They will go down now imho.
      Look at the macbook now, overpriced, underpowered. Look at the iphones, overpriced, old fashioned designs. Look at the absurdly overpriced mac pro... Look at the software available (adobe), even games... ¡even office suites! all them much better in windows and coming from third parties... they are already going down ...the ganius is not here anymore.

      @@apf14378 thanks for your opinion. I never used a Mac, but find it promising that they will be able to design all the components while others will rely on intel and etc. It seems like the difference between making your pasta at home and buying it from supermarket. Thanks anyway
