      The extremely depressing thing is ... it'll likely take years before XPS/windows laptops catch up in most aspects, and even when they do on paper you just know they'll half-ass it somehow. Like Dell did with their speakers technically being pretty good but actually distorting badly and rattling at certain upper-bass frequencies. Also don't trust them to do proper FALD control in all circumstances...
      At least we still get upgrade-able RAM and storage I guess... sigh...

    XPS pops more because of the way windows handles colours. System-wide consistency is much better on Macs and the OS redirects the colour profile of the picture.
    If you go back and watch all your comparisons this has always been the case. I had both the laptops and only when you open two images in a colour managed application, the differences between the two are minimised

    I think benchmarks tell only half the story. As a professional photographer that switched from the XPS to the Macbook this year, I can tell you the difference is not in the export times but in the every day use. In Lightroom the way you can work on the MacBook and how instant the previews are once you change a setting or brush a region is just not matched by Windows unfortunately, even on a powerfull desktop. That is the main reason I actually changed. Render times and export times don't matter as I can do something else like reply emails on my tablet or phone or run them through the night. But every day use is far more important. Also because i switched from a Samsung phone to the Iphone, the level of integration is insane and it just makes your life so much easier.

    It doesn’t look like M1 will beat Nvidia cards for 3D work unfortunately, as apple opted for boosting video editing in the hardware, and has no hardware ray tracing. I do photography as well as 3D now, so I’d love be wrong, but I think my next desktop will have to be a PC unless apple makes more of an effort to support 3D apps like Blender, Unreal Engine, Maya etc in the hardware and not just the software.
    look at the render difference when Optix is enabled in Blender on Nvidia cards, it’s huge.

      The apps will need to be optimize for the M1 lineup. The alpha build of blender does way better than the stable version on the M1 chipsets.

      @@kshitizjha yer totally, but still miles behind Nvidia's Optix options. I think the M1's are great, and they will continue to get better with support, but I think they will still need some form of raytracing cores to compete with Nvidia etc. I'm sure M1max Duo etc, will have great specs, but then the cost will be double that of a similar PC build. I hope I'm wrong, but I feel like it may be a while before Apple focuses in that area.

    One question: did you use the Dell Color app to choose the screen colorspace?

  • @wademorales
    @wademorales 2 года назад +4

    I have a question about the displays. One thing I know when comparing the iPhone to the galaxy is that the galaxy comes from the factory set to a default of "Vivid". The colors are far more saturated and some might think that’s a good thing. The iPhone doesn’t have any modes to set the color. When I view a photo that I have edited on a calibrated color accurate display (Eizo CS2730) the colors on the Samsung are disgustingly over saturated and makes the photo look like a cartoon. It pains me that people are viewing my photo on that setting. The iPhone 12 pro is very close to looking like what it should. So even though the Samsung might pop and have some crazy colors being displayed it is kinda shitty until you go in to the display settings and set it to Normal. Then it better matches what most peoples color accurate displays should look like.
    My question is, does the Dell come with a default that is similar (vivid on the Samsung phones) setting as the OLED Samsung displays? If so can you set it to normal and compare. Also how do these displays compare when you actually calibrate them to display accurate color? One of them is actually correct and better looking once they are properly calibrated. An over saturated display might be pleasing to some people. For professionals it’s shit. Kinda like walking in to a store to look at tvs and they all look different. But which one is actually correct. None really until you calibrate them.

    Don't the colors on the XPS "pop" more just because, by default, it is set to display its full gamut - which is 100% AdobeRGB as measured by Notebookcheck? The MBP 16 M1 "only" covers 88% of AdobeRGB per Notebookcheck also. Did you have both set to the same color gamut? Like comparing P3 vs P3 and sRGB mode vs sRGB mode.
    This all breaks down anyway with Dell because Premier color used to (probably still does? Let us know!) cause significant color banding when controlling color gamut. So if I don't need to be in AdobeRGB mode (which most people don't) but rather in sRGB (still the standard for nearly everything non-HDR) then with Dell, you either deal with horrible banding or with cartoonish colors...

    Doesn't USB-C tap out at 100W? Might want to check the actual wattage that's being used to charge the laptop. I know my M1 Max MBP 16" is unable to keep up if I'm charging thru USB-C and I'm gaming. Probably why Apple created their own charging standard again...I hear though that USB-C is doubling the power wattage with the new revision, another round of stupid cable replacements Zzz...

    HDR is such a pain in the ass with windows and they need to get it sorted. That said, its too simplistic to say this is just a pro comparison. "Pro" what?? I'm a professional that uses my laptop almost exclusively, and no i don't need to bake videos for youtube. I'm really tired of youtube rendering bakeoffs as though thats the only usecase for "pros". Also gaming makes Apple a non-starter for me at this point, I don't care how good thier hardware is. Like most people these days, I don't maintain a "work" laptop separatley from my personal one so current needs are much broader than are ususally represented by most reviews and I hope that changes. In my world between these two devices the XPS 17 is the only real option. Obviously there is a smaller creative group where the macbook wins hands down.

Apple has a 10 year head start since developing A1 chips on their iPhone lineup. Apple just needs to scale the M1 architecture with minor improvements going forward to hold the lead.
