For the turbo nerds here is some more stuff I learned about the OLED display verifying my findings with some experts:
-The pixels on this display aren’t what you’d see on a lot of traditional Pentile-type displays, which have double the amount of G subpixels compared to R and B (because your eyes are more sensitive to green).
-The B subpixel area is twice that of either the R or G subpixel area. That is not a surprise: Considering that blue OLED decay is much faster than that of R or G, use of twice (or more) area on B enables half or less J (current density, mA/cm2), which reduces the B aging rate.
-We were curious if the B subpixel pairs were independently driven or if Samsung cheated when making the panel and driving them together, effectively giving you 1080Ps worth of B pixels. An image was created with a single white pixel on a black background and we verified that the B subpixel pairs are independently driven with the microscope.
-It was speculated that the screen might look weird because the blue pixels aren't on the same center line as the red and green ones. I looked at a totally green screen but the dirtyness was still there, making the screendoor effect theory more solid.
-Part of the “dirtiness” is mediocre “Mura correction”. Since each individual pixel is emitting it’s own light on an OLED panel it is important that it is properly calibrated so the brightness of each pixel is the same. This information gets baked into the firmware of each individual OLED display, and if the calibration wasn’t done the whole thing would look horrible.
-Certain vision astigmatisms will make you a lot more sensitive to pentile layouts, it is possible I'm just really sensitive to this and you might be fine.
-These Samsung OLED panels are basically impossible to properly colour calibrate. There isn’t enough power to run the whole thing at max brightness, so the colours/brightness of the scene can change depending on the total power draw of the panel.
-All of these artifacts are imperceptible if you’re about 2’ away from the display, but are noticeable at about 1.5’ (fairly typical for using a laptop).
-I was able to see the individual subpixels with my naked eye on the XPS 15’s IPS display, but had to get uncomfortably close.
Anyway, if there are any display nerds with more info hit me up @AlexTheGreatish, this was a fun little rabbit hole. -AC
very interesting read, thanks!
*ignore this im an idiot that doesn't know shit* Oled, (or maybe just amoled idk) screens have alot of smearing with blacks.
Thank you for this. As a photographer whose work is entirely dependent on color correction, I will make sure that this laptop isn't something to recommend.

I like your new haircut 😊
The Pixel Layout needs to be in a video on LTT discussing screen quality. This was extremely cool.
A video comparing all of the different screen types and variations within those types would be awesome
Yes!
Yeah, hopefully this becomes something that they will always do for now on.
Yes!! At some point OLED only used two subpixel per pixels, resulting in basically just 2/3 of the "advertised" resolution. Also, _please_ add camera sensors to the mix as they only have one "subpixel" per pixel.
this please

You're talking about the channel that spent ~$140k on RED 8k cameras and peripherals 3 years ago, only for them to be replaced later this year by 6 BlackMagic 12k cameras they got for ~$60k.
A couple $100 on LCD microscopes is chump change.
once you buy them, you can use them indefinitely. doesn't add to the budget, also justifies buying stuff.
@@pawala7 It should be "invested" instead of "spent". Linus explained very well on TWS that there is just no way for them to lose their money on those Blackmagic. Those cameras can give them a ton of content or they can just flip them for profit
@@pawala7 its a joke
@@ngdnhatanh Gonna have to disagree. Their content doesn't look noticeably better than it used to, and they're never going to flip them because they're set on using them. So, that money was effectively wasted.

Alex: It has so many ports
My old laptop: Oh really
the hp envy 17 from last year had a dvd port in it which is wack for newer laptops, but much appreciated - I/O is something I wish we had more of
I don't really see this as an issue though, especially for an ultrabook. In fact, its better than most ultrabooks and comes close to gaming laptops.
it has 2 USB Type A (Mouse and Keyboard)
An HDMI (External Display)
2 Thunderbolt (Multi-purpose - ethernet, HDMI, DP, USB, Serial, external GPU, UHS-3 SD readers)
3.5mm audio combo jack
A Micro sd card slot (This I could see being near pointless...)
IMO, this is miles better than VGA, DVI, Mini DP, HDMI 1.2/1.4, in thicker enclosures.
You want to do real work as a photographer/videographer/cinematographer?
Buy an external UHS-3 card reader and don't use the crappy USB 2.0 interface SD card slot in your laptop.
You want to have low latency high speed internet for gaming or downloads or connection to NAS?
Connect a 2.5Gb or 10Gb ethernet adapter to USB-C/thunderbolt.
Need to connect a total of 3 monitors at 4K 60Hz for programming or editing? (The UHD 630 can do alone this without the 2060mq too, although most ports are configured to the dGPU).
Use HDMI 2.0, and two USB-C/Thunderbolt to DP cables.
Double thunderbolt on old laptops?
@@haxorinator8219 Or instead of having to bring a trillion dongles with you just plug something into pre-built ports. As cool as USB C may sound it ends up combining many ports into one and having to bring extra stuff because the manufacturer cheaped out on development costs sucks and may prove difficult over time. Not mentioning the annoying replacement of barrel jack charger with usb c as well on many laptops noways, which is a plain downgrade from a freely-rotateable and very secure port. But oh well "progress" happens, just like the Win10 losing customisation functions of Win7 crap.

Someone has to say it, the same laptop with an AMD CPU would be much better.
With no gimped cooling? YES!
Yup
They've been saying this for months when the latest mobile ryzen chips were released
Exactly
Main complaint for 2020 in tech
imagine if nothing else this was a 4900HS instead of a 10750H. literally everything else was the same how different this would be
@WILD CRACKS its never going to be released, a 4800h would be sweet though, better performance, better thermals, better battery, and probably cheaper xD
2060 g
Dude I know right! That is all I have been wondering since it came out. Why the F*ck isn't Razer, Dell, HP and every other company using the 4900HS in every thin and light performance laptop with 2060 - 2080 respectively? It would be an easy sell! The H version can be reserved for the 17in but HS should be a 15in standard. I mean WTF? The HS for those who don't know is an AMD - Intel Killer mobile CPU (4900HS to be exact) that crushes Intel offerings while consuming 35W. Intel uses 45W and struggles to keep up and at 95W it comes close to the 35W AMD. Let that sink in.
@@nischay4760 yeah R7 4800H easily beats R9 4900HS as they both have same number of cores.
@@chiefalpha8584 Your statement of "Intel uses 45W and struggles to keep up and at 95W it comes close to the 35W AMD" is horribly wrong, when current intel and amd competitors are given same wattage the amd one will win but if the intel one is given more power than amd one of course its gonna win. I honestly would not mind high tdp for laptop for more performance if the thermals are under control. The ryzen 7 4800H is rated 45W but when it is plugged in and is performing CPU only load it can pull upto 72W on some laptops and give better performance same is with the intel ones. About battery life when running laptop on battery the cpu TDP should be electronically limited to low power eg 20W, 25W, 30W which would result in better battery life.

Just because this doesn't come with a type C charger doesn't mean it can't be charged by type C. As you mentioned earlier, the 200 W charger keeps the laptop from losing power under load and type C can't deliver 200 W yet. The type C ports on this laptop supports Power Delivery (up to 100 W I think). Please do a little more research before saying stuff like this.
PD through type C is one of my favorite features and I keep an eye out so when you said it doesn't support it I remember most HP non gaming laptop have it and went online and checked.
Let's hope the EU does the same to barrel chargers on laptops as it did to barrel chargers on phones ec.europa.eu/growth/sectors/electrical-engineering/red-directive/common-charger_en
It would have been nice if they had tried to use a USB-C physical port with a non-standard charging voltage like Dell did on the XPS.
Not sure whats the point charging 200 W laptop with 100 W USB-C charger..
And my HP OMen has POwer Delivery too but IT CANNOT BE USED FOR CHARGING laptop but other devices. So maybe do some research too
@@AjdamusMagnus if you read my entire comment you would have found out I said that most HP non gaming laptops have it. I mean, you could attack me saying most since most low-end ones will not so I'm really referring to mid-range to top tier ones but OMEN. OMEN. Let that sink in. If that didn't sink in, The Omen line is HP's gaming line. Also, which model do you have? where does it say it has power delivery? I am legitimately interested if I am wrong as this will be the first case where, if what you are saying is true, it says PD but does not support PD charging of the device. A link to the product on HP's website would be swell.
As to why I want type c charging on a 200W laptop. Because laptops are not just for gaming, just like this one, a non gaming laptop. Most of the time, you will be doing productivity where 100 watts is ample to top up the battery given at a lower rate. not mentioning you could lump around a charger that is 1/4 the size and 1/2 the weight.

My Dell XPS 15 from 2019 has a gorgeous OLED display, no grainyness or reflections.
Yeah... Good thing you noticed that OLED image quality issue. I was wondering how the heck they managed to squeeze in a 15" 4K OLED touch panel in a $1500 laptop when you can barely get IPS screens with 4K touch at that price point. This old tech explains it.
But this laptop with a normal IPS LCD seem to be a good bargain in todays ridiculously priced market space.

I really like the Envy lineup. The x360 is an amazing laptop!

Aside from the screen wobble (I'd have to judge the actual screen in person), I like it. Also like seeing they adopted good cooling practices normally seen on gaming notebooks as well. This is generally the notebooks I like - not game focused, no gamer looks, but still capable of gaming in a pinch when called upon.
Yeah, I feel as though in recent years HP is becoming a big competitor to large Laptop brands like Lenovo, Dell, and even Apple. Hope they succeed because their laptops are very well made and have solid performance. Best of all, they are way easier to fix than a MacBook (Cheaper I bet too)

bruh it sounded way better on the video. maybe it did sound diff irl
its just yours headphones/audio setup sucks
It was just in a position to be picked up better by the microphone. Especially when heard briefly, people tend to equate louder with better, but you'd have to listen more closely or hear it better to pick out the differences in frequency response very well. The bass was mostly just "missing" on the HP.
Some people like flat music and some like bass
HP laptops usually have awesome sound in light of the limitations of the speakers' size since Bang & Olufsen tune the speaker setups for HP
The blue pixels are actually larger in size because their materials tends to deteriorate quicker. Making them larger means they don't need to be as bright per area to achieve the same brightness as blue and green. Less bright OLED pixels deteriorate significantly slower.
Honestly HP always disappoints me, when I started uni I needed a powerful laptop for some cad and rendering stuff and I went for the 2019 HP omen 15 because specs seemed good for the price, Long story short first one the gpu dies in 2 days, got it replaced, second one came with a screen issue and a broken fan, and third one came with a gpu with a bunch of artifacts, this over a period of a couple of weeks, so eventually I complained enough to HP that they gave me a refund rather than a replacement, so I went for the ROG Zephyrus 701GWR and that one has no issues. My friend got the 17 inch omen instead and in 2 months he got a dead gpu too, and my father has had an HP ultrabook, I think it was the specter line and that laptop was littered with issues too, HP laptops seem good on paper but in reality they are pretty bad, also customer support is a big pain
I concur. I was buying and preparing laptops to accompany a high tech product my employer sold. Long story short, all of the HP's required lots of time and effort to remove bloatware and most of them developed issues. My own laptop is a Lenovo 17" with i7 CPU and 16GB RAM. I bought it a few years back and whilst I am ready to upgrade, the damned thing won't die.
Just bought this envy with the 10th gen i9/ rtx 2060 maxQ/ 32gb ram/ 2x 1tb m.2 an 4K Oled. It’s an absolute beast of a laptop. Contrary to what I expected, it does not overheat....at all !. Quiet even under heavy load( fans are surprisingly quiet) . First thing I did was to dismantle the raid O array in bios, then reinstalled windows from a thumb drive and just installed the minimal software from hp’s website somI could get the colour calibration profiles. Now I can use 1 m.2 for Windows and apps, the other m.2 for projects and scratch disk. Disk read and write is blazing fast on both drives ( +/- 3200 read +/- 2990 write) . Makes working with photoshop a breeze. Battery life, as expected is not on par with the XP’s or MacBook Pro ( around 6 hours for general use), probably would be a lot better if I used something else than Chrome for web browsing.
The price for these specs completely blows out of the water any Dell, MacBook Pro or Lenovo with lesser specs. With the money saved, I was able to add another great Fujinon lens , because after all, my hobby is photography, not computer use ;)

To replace my old Frankenstein Office PC, I bought for just 333 € ($394) the HP 255 G7... an extremely cheap 15'' notebook with Ryzen 5 2500U (now 3500U), 8 GB DDR4-2400, 512 GB M.2 SSD... paired with an incredibly washed out 1080p TN panel, plastic case with a HDMI 2.0 (although the data sheet says 1.4b), two USB 3.1 Gen 1 and one USB 2.0, together with a DVD drive and full size SD card reader. Really good value.
Nice fearless flyers shirt, my dude.
7:22 OMG thanks Alex I was just having the same problem with my new monitor, moving it back on my desk totally fixed it.
"There it is, it's a laptop" -Alex, 2020
When you pulled the vapor chamber - it was connected/adhered by this black tape to the smaller radiators. Might it be a carbon thermal pad type of deal? Because THEN it might have a lot of sense.
"Let me just get a microscope..." I love you! 🤣
Liked the edition and the fact that he/she looked for the specs of the machine, like the display ratio, something that does not happen normally (specially in this channel)
Is it just me or does the HP laptop look just like the Razer Blade 15???
Pretty much, inside as well. They could have compared it to the Blade 15 as well.
I have to ask, my lap is about to kick the bucket. I have to say Alex, I trust you implicitly.
So I ask this: what should I be looking at for a 17”-17.3” laptop with OLED 4K, 32 Mb RAM min., decent graphics card that can handle photoshop and video editing (I’m not much of a gamer), fast enough chipset, good array of ports.
My current machine is DELL Inspiron 7773. DELL and I are having a failure to communicate (see litigation likely). I’ve only ever had DELLs.
So what do you think Alex⁉️ Can you help a brother out⁉️ Purdy please⁉️
HP wanted to beat the Dell XPS, just out of pure Envy
That is smartest laptop joke of all time
Dude this looks really similar to a Razer Blade 15 White Mercury Edition! Even the insides are awesome like the Blade with the Vapor Chamber.
"the way the pickles are lined up"
Just bought a HP Envy 17.
I deliberately avoided the OLED version. I hope it's as good as the 15" in this review.
I also want a barrel connector. If laptop USB charging is anything like mobile phone USB charging, then it'll need a replacement port after three years.
Usually HP = "Heating Pad"
Every HP I've owned has had a combination of heating issues, lots of fan noise, and poor battery life.
The price may be ok, but if it turns out to be another paperweight, or hand-me-down to my nieces / nephews then why bother.
Couldn’t agree more. I have noticed HP cuts corners in different areas to produce a product with great specs for a great price but in the end an inferior product.
I work on computers for a living, and Intel Optane also creates issues on consumer products. HP tends to use them a lot from what I’ve seen. I love the idea of optane but it not worth it for now.
they did get their shit together with the new OMEN though. that thing's a cooling beast...
Yeah, as a person who has used several Pavilions over his life, they do get hot and loud after a while. You have to clean them kind of frequently, but if you do so the price to performance of their machines are great.
Wow! I really dig the Fearless Flyers t-shirt. That's awesome!
when even the unboxing channel for LTT pulls out a microscope.
Surface book 2 still has the best screen on a laptop in my opinion, the color really pops, words are sharp, and on top of that, the touchscreen plus digitizer is awesome
No AMD version? sorry I'll pass.
If HP drops an Envy/similar laptop with a 4000 series Renoir chip, consider me intrigued, $1600 for a laptop that could easily be made better (Lower thermals, lower power consumption and longer battery life) it could easily be closer to $1400 if they went with that specs list instead
Look for Omen, it's the same without OLED.
@@floorgang420 Omen actually has OLED
I think they have AMD for the x360 version
The problem with Amd laptops is that their design sucks. Amd is superior in Intel as of now but there are not good laptops with amd. Can some one recommend me a 15 inch with Amd 4000 series
I bought this laptop almost a month ago. It is great for the most part. Battery life with it is ehh, when I am web browsing or doing stuff for school I feel like I get maybe 6 to 7 hours on the integrated gpu. Also in my opinion the fans can get pretty loud. The area right above the keyboard can get pretty warm at times and the power brick while charging and using the laptop can get way too hot, you could probably burn yourself with it if you held it long enough. Everything else is great, I love how the keyboard feels and the screen is the best thing I have seen. If you have any questions just ask. And ill try to answer them.
a year later and how do you like it still? Run into any major problems?
Why is no one talking about the i9 version with a 2060 max q 🤔
Overheat
Fair enough
Every XPS 15 we've purchased over the years at work has had issues out of the box. Some were fixed with board replacements, some Dell could never fix so they were returned.
"There is something going on with screen"
*Bring out a microscope*

I love how yalll grab the laptop and it like goes 90 degrees and are like wow so rigid but my school Chromebook is incredibly stiff
1:31 What's the opposite of peel porn called? Because this is it.
Also, can companies STOP making silver keyboards with white backlighting. It makes the keys hard to read in alot of mid to low light conditions when you'd actually want to turn it on.
agreed. it's so weird. Just got ours yesterday and it was one of the first things I noticed, in addition to the screen door effect on the 4k monitor. Not that happy.
I have the envy 13 2018 and the backlighting is blueish. It is weird
