I just saw someone today mention to not topstitch through the lining, but didn't mention why not. Thank you for explaining in detail why we shouldn't. I couldn't understand why my seams were so bulky and didn't know how to fix it. Your tutorials are excellent 👌
Helloooo, you have solved a problem that I have not been able to accomplish in years now . How to make that zipper look square on the corners....gosh thank you so much for showing this. I finally can make my bags with out this ugly sides I get....supper nice idea. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much for the video. You’ve made it clear cut regarding the top stitching. I have been sewing 40 plus years but new to zipper tabs and bags. Thank you so much.
Great quick how to video.Semi off topic but good info for zipper tabs for anyone reading, I was having such a hard time getting a good even top stich on my woven zipper tabs with my Janome M7 which is a semi-industrial. I found that interfacing my zipper tabs made a HUGE difference, that extra time is worth it for me and if others are having the same issue try it. I use little scraps to interface them of a very light weight and then normal woven interface weight. ♥
I appreciate the WHY behind techniques. If I can understand why or why not to do something, I'm more likely to remember the better technique. Thanks for this great explanation!
Thanks for adding in why *not* to stitch down the lining. My stubborn self has been doing it for so long that when I encountered those instructions in a purse pattern recently I went “pffffft, I’ll do it anyway.” It was the prototype/for me purse, so I’ll make sure to cut that out for future sale purses! Thanks!
Thank you! I will be trying this out and seeing if it helps with the pleats or weird tucks up under the zipper on the lining. One zipper pouch I think I ripped and re-sewed three times trying to get the lining smooth at that point. I finally gave up since it was just a little bag for me.
This was great! So many tutorials dont go over these details that mean so much at the end. I have struggled with this one, but now I think I can go forward and be able to get the finished look I want.
I LOVE it! Just recently, I was wondering how this exact method was done. I just got a new sewing machine last year. Love learning these different techniques.
Those ends do look good but for smaller bags I really love how much wider they open when one end of the zipper is folded at a 90 degree angle and no zipper tab there. In fact sometimes I just sit there opening and closing it over and over, squishing the left un tabbed side in towards the middle of the bag to make it open real wide and then zip it back up again because, well, I don't know, maybe I need a fidget toy or something LOL! Just did while watching your video with one of many of my peek a boo pouches that I always have around me 🤣
Thanks for explaining this so clearly. I couldn't remember the reason for not stitching down the lining when using zipper tabs, just remembered that I shouldn't 🤣😅😂. You are so inspiring to me!!
Leanne topstitch from zipper to zipper. I have tried that method. Thanks for the tutorial. I prefer to topstitch across but not the lining, like you. I just learned how to keep the lining away from the zipper. Everything is trial and errror.
I would rather you mention certain details for example as in trimming the excess seam allowance near the zipper tabs then to assume that a lot of us know all of these things. I’d rather have more information than omitting key details. Love your hair! How do you do all this and have a two-year-old? I don’t have that kind of energy anymore lol You have a ton of knowledge so you can talk to me like I’m a two-year-old any time😂😂
Thank you for this great tutorial! I have a silly question. Do you sew through the double sided tape or just next to it? I'm asking because I sewed glue-on velcro one time when I didn't have the regular at home, and the glue almost messed up my sewing machine! (Won't be doing that mistake ever again!)
Hi Lauren. It was great meeting you at SME TX!! I love this tutorial :) When sewing the sides together which way does the zipper tab go? Towards the exterior or interior?
I just saw someone today mention to not topstitch through the lining, but didn't mention why not. Thank you for explaining in detail why we shouldn't. I couldn't understand why my seams were so bulky and didn't know how to fix it.
Your tutorials are excellent 👌
My favorite way is from Rosie as in Rosie and David. She topstitches over the outside edge of the tab and not all the way from end to end.
The new sewing space for classes is absolutely awesome in so many ways!!

If you want a nice sharp corner on the bottom, take one stitch at 45 degrees (not a 90 degree turn). Sounds counterintuitive-but it works.
I can't seem to wrap my head around this one.? But I think I heard someone else say this same thing once awhile back before I sewed my first bag.
I learned that technique for making pillows. It’s odd but that slightly blunt corner allows for a sharper corner 🤷♀️
I would kiss you if I could! I just tried this and it really does work. I don’t have any idea why … 😂 but it just does.
@@Tenita79 I hope I remember that cool tip
I'm going to try it. Thank you!
The BEST EXPLANATION EVER! I so needed to hear this! Thanks
I appreciate all the tips you offer. I can’t think outside the box at all and this simple solution makes such a difference. Thanks!
Your videos are just SO brilliant- I’ve just got remember this technique 😥😁 it makes so much sense now
Best explanation of this technique I’ve ever seen. Lauren, you continue to be the very best! ❤
Thank you so much for the video. You’ve made it clear cut regarding the top stitching. I have been sewing 40 plus years but new to zipper tabs and bags. Thank you so much.
One of the best tutorials on zippers I have seen. I really dislike those bulky corners but did not know what to do. Now I do and I thank you so much.
Thank you so much Lauren. I just had this exact problem. Now I'll know what to do for the next ones. I really liked this video! You helped me alot.
I've seen this on other channels, but not so well illustrated. Thanks Lauren!
Thank you…this was very helpful. Could you share how you do your lining? If there’s a vid already, I’d love to watch. 😎

Sounds like a good idea. I wish we could see what that looks like. Is there a video anywhere of this technique?
@@sclmb not sure, I should make one! but surely there is a video on here somewhere
Baa haa your face at 4:34 just cracked me up so hard! it said so much without saying a word 🤣🤣🤣

Great helpful video, as usual. I am now sewing the lining opening side seams like you do. And it’s such a neater finish. Thanks for helping us all.
Totally had an aha-moment regarding this yesterday ❤

Is waterproof canvas a popular choice for a lining?
If so..why?

Great tutorial 🎉 will you be selling that sweater on your site? 🥰
Aw sadly these are only at SME’s! They’re all handmade!

I do sew through it
I have looked for the double sided tape. Do you have a specific brand you use?
Glad I found your channel! What type Juki sewing machine are to using and can it sew through leather?
It can but it isn’t meant for leather. Juki 1181
What are you pulling off on that fabric? :) I'm still learning.
It was likely double sided tape
Is that regular double sided tape or is it special type for sewing please 😊
Special type for sewing. I offer some at moremeknow.com
What type of material is the lining?
water resistant canvas moremeknow.com
What are the reasons that your zipper would be wavy? Thanks 😊
Ironing it first can be really helpful! But also if it’s pulled taught at any time that can affect it as well.
What juki is that one?
1181
What are the basic measurements for the #5 zipper accents?
I used a 2.5”x1” piece of non fraying material
@@LaurenMormino thank you 😊
That container with your pens, need. Where can I get it?
I got it at michaels
Hi Lauren. It was great meeting you at SME TX!! I love this tutorial :) When sewing the sides together which way does the zipper tab go? Towards the exterior or interior?
I fold the zipper towards the lining but it shouldn’t matter 100% since you won’t sew through them!
Perfect. Thanks so much.
You made it make sense. Devon are not friends...yet. Maybe.
❤❤
Thanks for a great explanation
