great step by step video! no useless chitter chatter or music like so many other people who blabber for nothing and try to be funny...you get right to the point!...I was going to change the struts tonight after work, but now that I see how stupidly this van is made (how ridicoulous that there is no access door for the strut bolts!!)..you just saved me a whole lot of trouble as I'ts going to take me a lot longer than I thought...so I'll save the job for the weekend instead of being up until midnight tonight!.. Thanks!
I referenced this very informative video before replacing my own rear shock/struts two days ago. It is very time consuming and somewhat stressful because you are constantly worried about breaking something plastic, and i don't mess around near air bags....... I was able to remove both the large (black panels) panels from the car without unbolting the upper seat belt anchors or any of the upper (light tan panels) plastic panels. No need to mess around near airbags! Just be patient and go slow with interior pieces . Taking the car apart and interior re-assembly takes longer than replacing the shocks/struts... Between careful dis-assembly, cleaning interior, doing the shock/struts, re-assembly of interior (very carefully), then a final wipe down, this took me about three hours to do.......hope this helps!
remove the rear seat that covers the plastic in front of the strut nut location and just cut the plastic side panel enough to get to the nuts and then patch up with some gorilla tape to hold the plastic panel back to gather then reinstall the rear seat and you will NEVER see what has been done, also save from removing all the panels and creating creaks and noise from loose plastic parts that never go back together again like they should....LOL
The hilarity here is that a video on "how to replace rear struts" is 75% about "how to take the rear interior apart" and only 25% strut replacement. Thanks, Dodge!
It's not as bad as it looks it's really not that bad I just did it right now but still it shouldn't have to be this involved to replace rear struts Dodge should be ashamed but then again this company isn't Dodge anymore
Thank you for making this video I just did this job now and I had the reference this video to see how to get some of the pieces out I can't believe all the junk that has to come out just to access the rear strut mounts on the top this video made it easier. I would say. Chrysler should be ashamed of themselves but this isn't the old Chrysler company anymore
You don’t have to take the top trim off, but it helps to loosen the seat belt pieces on the left and right sides….Also you definitely have to take the 3rd row seats out…Thanks for this video guys, it was a tremendous help!
Thanks for this. Just did the rear brakes and noted we have a busted rear spring. (It's still drive-able thankfully...Just snapped off the top curly) To the ones saying "Hey just cut a panel...." If it's your own SUV? No problem. If this is a customers SUV? That's not going to be an option.
Professional Mechanic. I always recommend springs. Springs fatigued just like struts. So now the new shock is doing part of the spring work. Shock has premature failure due to trying to hold up body weight that is the springs job
Thank you sir for taking the time and the effort to do this video and upload it. It certainly gives me the courage to do it on my wife's 2016 Dodge Journey Crossroads. I will use the Moog brand, since you recommend it, will not use the napa brand sway bar links. Thanks again.
Was it really necessary to remove the entire interior from the car? I have the struts sitting in a box at the moment, but this doesnt look like the 1 hour job I thought it would be.
Garry Humphries Boughtbused at about 60K kms. Now has about 101K kms. 3.6 engine is very hard on fuel in city but fine on the highway. Bluetooth module died and will cost a lot to replace. New battery, alternator, brakes all around, new tires, need a windshield, need rear struts replaced and rear control arms. Likely have to put into it in repairs about $2500 cad. Not sure if it’s worthwhile. I will stick with Toyota going forward.
Thank you for this video. About to do this job tomorrow. I always laugh when the domestic car makers wonder why their market is shrinking. Turns out that at least in the 2012 models there is a cut-out built into the panel in front of the bolts (for the two seat model but not the 3 row seat model); that can be cut out to fold out of the way to remove the nuts.
I tried to just pry open the the quarter panel cover but that doesn't work cuz there's covers inside on the bottom over the entire strut assembly this is why you have to take the whole damn interior apart
First off I wanna say thanks because you guys really do make it easy for people to follow. Can you please make a video on how to replace a water pump. I have a 2011 dodge journey mainstreet. Thanks.
I don't understand why dodge would not create an access panel for something like this, could probably make your own quicker and cheaper than taking all that time and trouble
You can back out the seat belt out the seat seat belt anchors a little but not off completely to give you a little room to pull those plastic covers down and out'. You don't have to mess with the white plastic pieces at all. Leave that stuff alone and don't disconnect the fan motor electrical OR remove the AC breather, it's bad enough as it is, it's a 5 to 6 hr. job by your self. Great car, unbelievable to have to work on.
Hey I thought about doing mines as well and was watching this video and seen your post. Is your model a awd model cause I have a 2010 dodge journey awd
No mine is not, but they may have, take out your cargo tray in the rear and look on each side for cutouts, it was because the 7 passenger has different plastic panels than the 5 passenger models
RUclips for the win. I was watching this video for my 2012, and my jaw was dropping lower and lower as I watched more of the interior come out. I was getting ready to cut a hole. And now I see theres an access panel.

The socket got stuck because the chrome caps are swollen. No need to clean the hub either, just use anti-seize for easy removal later down the road. If you chose to clean the hub, use a die grinder, not sandpaper. Really makes no sense in using only shallow sockets when deep sockets are a must for this type of job. You know you can use socket extensions on impact drivers. Also, most mechanics would use magnetic trays to hold all the bolts in so they don't get lost. Making it more difficult than what it should be by attempting to remove interior panels that you don't really need to remove. A better way to prevent damage to the CV axle is to hold the wheel hub assembly up with a jack. There are other alternative tools to use other than a screwdriver to push a bolt out, which can damage the tip of the screwdriver, like a punch.
This video is very incorrect. I replaced the rear struts of my mother-in-laws 2009 Dodge Journey this weekend and the interior panels do NOT need to be removed. The hatches will not fold up allowing access to the strut bolts. You can use a closed end ratcheting wrench to loosen the nuts. through here. There is some foam insulation in the way so I cut it out of the opening with a utility knife.
I'll be doing this job on my GF's 2011 this weekend, so I'll let you know if I can do it like you say, cause I don't exactly understand what you mean by "a large plastic tub in the rear of the car held with 4 nuts".... I guess I'll see when I get to it...

This is the best video I have ever seen on RUclips. Seriously thank you so much we would not have been able to do this without you. Amazing job 👍👍👍
So you have to dismantle the half of your interior in order to replace just the struts??
Horrible design

If this was engineered so it had studs on the body you could just remove the nuts under the car and compress the spring it will fall right out.
