I have a 2012 SXT 4 cylinder, 2.4 L, front wheel drive with 156k on it. I've driven from Texas to Guatamala and back twice and it's been our daily shared short journey car inbetween hammering over the Sierra Madres . As a family we really hammer this car with dog in the back, camping gear on the roof and sometimes bikes on a rack at rear. I've had to change the thermostat and the waterpump. The rear lights went out so I had to fix the wiring with electrical tape and just a week ago a rear side window stopped opening so I'll have to fix that. It started using oil about 30k ago and so between oil changes I have to top it up with a pint or two.. I change the oil every 5k +/- and have done the transmission services on time. I think I change the anti freeze every 2 years. My wife chose the car for the leather seats and sunroof thing, I'd never owned a Dodge before always Ford, Nissan or Toyota. This has been the toughest and most reliable car I have ever owned. I guess I got lucky! I don't want to talk about the Sonic we bought...

We had a 2013 with the V6 and no issues with just over 100K miles.
We traded for a 2017 Journey GT with the V6 and it is now over 100K without any issues.
    Just normal maintenance.
I even tow my 18' roundabout boat with it.
We normally get 27 mpg on the highway, towing the boat is 17 mpg and running in 5th gear on the highway, towing at 70 mph.
    No issues.

The Journey seems so hit or miss. I own a 2012 with 160k on it. Heater core and radiator had to be replaced. The 3.6 in mine had to have the cylinder head replaced which was quite common for the pentastar v6. Mine doesn't owe me a thing, it always starts and always gets me home. Every feature still works at 11 years old! The 62te transmission hasn't been touched and has been troublefree. I'd gladly buy another one.

@@rizzz007 I would recommend buying one if you care about: third row seating, rear ac, and 20k brand new. Because ekf the price the car is cheaply made and develop problems as they age. They're not that bad if you take care of it and do preventative mantinence, but some things are stupidly designed and hard to replace. Ex. Take off left wheel to get to battery, right wheel for alternator, rear struts you must take off all panels nearly, etc.

I guess I’ve been lucky, I have a 2014 that has been doing really well… At the moment it needs struts which I do find a bit strange since it’s only 49,000 km (which I think is around 30,000 miles). Otherwise, I’ve been thinking of switching to another vehicle that would be more practical for camping, but I can’t bear to tear myself away from this one, it has never let me down.

I have an 09 SXT and have not had these problems per se, but others. Mind you I'm not the first owner, but some things I noticed are that several of the electric controls have stopped working, and it's not the button assembly. Also the engine mounts and control-arm bushings are pretty bad. There are any me things in this car that are way more time-consuming and harder to fix than in other cars. This six-cylinder engine is pushed up against the chassis and makes it hard to access certain things.

Frist happened 3 years ago, I replaced coil & plugs, didn't fix it. I swapped an injector with another cylinder, cylinder 1 was still bad & the one I sawpped with was fine. It eventually stopped. Now it came back & saying 1 & 4 misfire. along with Intake manifold runner potion A & Throttle/Pedal potion sensor/switch. I'm thinking the Current sensor on battery is bad

My wife bought a 2015 SXT V6. Trans was leaking at 60k had dealer fix it, they forgot to replace trans fluid so trans failed, they put in a rebuilt trans and it groans/struggles off the line. Suv has 142k, new trans also leaks, motor has oil puddle on block, radiator has a hole in it, rotors are warped, suspension is bad, motor mounts are bad, it just has a lot of issues for a 6 year old suv. I have a 21 year old infiniti car with 227k on it that I drove way harder, has way less problems, and is still more reliable. Her Jeep liberty before that had a bad trans before 100k too. The mechanics I talk to agree these are crap. The newer mopar stuff has transmission issues and poor build quality in general. Buy foreign or buy American fleet models to get better drivetrains.

Dodge should get out of the 4 cylinder game. Bought a 2010 SE last April from a dealer with only 120k on it and since then it has had a faulty rear blade motor, rear passenger door seal leaks, key fob issues(not battery) , master window and lock control issues(replaced myself) crankshaft sensor (causing misfire, also replaced myself) choking and dying while idling, leaking thermostat housing, steering wheel airbag issue (airbag fault makes car horn go off at random) and worst of all the whole rear suspension had to be replaced because the camber angle got worse and worse since i took it of his lot (within 7k of driving it the rear suspension sagged worse than grandmas flaps). That last one may have had more to do with the filthy rat salesman who sold it to me, but the previous records showed 1 owner and I even called the dealership in Woodbridge to confirm prior accident history prior to the salesman taking ownership of it, and all seemed kosher. Now I'm in the hole. Ffs never again.

Buy this car if: you only have $20k and want a new car, need 7 seats, want an SUV, and want AC in the back. Do not buy it if: you can afford anything better. I have a 2014 SE (base model 4 banger). The build quality of this car is terrible and it is basic, however, it has only broke down 1 time at 170k miles, so thats good. My biggest complaints/problems I've had: oil leaked REALLY bad, started using synthetic oil and its much less now. Valve cover gasket is leaking and the oil pans always do. Suspension is cheap and bouncy. Combined with it being FWD it wobbles on turns if you hit a bump. It had A LOT of warranty work done on it including catalytic convertor replacement and random lights coming on. The airbag sensor decided to stop working. My blend door actuator (there's 3, it controls the climate) is clicking because it's malfunctioning. I had a big coolant leak from cap stem, easy fix. The battery is in the length side wheel well and is difficult to access and builds corrosion because of exposure. The alternator is on the bottom of the engine and you hage to take a wheel off to access it.
I wouldn't recommend this car, it's dodge junk, but it's cheap and runs. 4 banger is a little more reliable than the 6 but so extremely slow it painful. Mileage sucks on both. They are hit or miss with reliability. USE SYNTHETIC OIL WITH THIS CAR. If you can afford something better, get it. If not, be prepared for shitty dodge engineering. Basic maintinence like spark plugs and engine works is easy.
    overall don't get this car

I bought my 2012 dodge journey new and have 194,000 on it. Same engine, tranny, no electrical problems. I have replaced some stuff and always maintained it with a master mechanic. I know these don't have good reputations and it is not a high end car by any means, but it has been a good road car and reliable. First Dodge I ever had. Every manufacture has their rough cars, especially if it isn't their high end models. Most people don't get problems fixed right away and they don't have someone they can trust.

This is known as FIAT Freemont in Europe. Buying this car was the miserable decision of my life. Problems are waiting in queue. One goes other comes. Alternator of this car is the worst. My car started draining the battery, took it to FIAT, they kept it for like a week and said the battery was fault and there was nothing wrong with car. Few months later problems appear again. Took it to Fiat. Same story, battery is fault. Replaced 3 batteries in 1 and half years but FIAT didn't wan't to accept that the Alternator is faulty. Took the car to a private garage, he ran all the tests and found the alternator was faulty. Since the car was broken and FIAT garage was involved and they didn't fix the issue, I have no faith in this BRAND. This single problem costed me roughly around 3000$ (FIAT visits roughly 1000 and private garage + alternator extra 2000). and it other issues as well costed me lot of money. Timing belt was broken, its uconnect never works. One of its engine belt broke before the time of replacement. The most sick car on planet Earth.

Mine just may of hit the end of the road. Got 313,000 miles out of it. Timing chain went tonight and did catastrophic damage to bunch of components. It whipped around and tore through a lot. Probably going to let it go. However I would buy it again for sure!! It was reliable AF until now!!

Bought a 2013 Journey SXT from a dealership 2 years ago for $9000. Had 170,000kms on it & I've had to put $5000 worth of work into it. New transmission & passenger side half shaft @ 200,000kms, new blend doors @ 215,000kms, & all the routine maintenance (oil changes, air filters, etc). Heater isn't working correctly now so I'm going to flush the core & change the coolant. If that doesn't work & I need a new heater core ($2000 job), I'm scrapping the car. We had fantastic luck with Dodges in the past (1992, 96, & 2010 Grand Caravans), but I'll never buy another Journey

Dealer said they never found any problems every time it dies.

In a one year span, heater core failed, thermostat failed, water pump failed, head gasket failed, and radiator failed. It ran hot all the time no matter what got replaced. And I'm pretty sure towards the end, the transmission was going. First generation and hopefully the last. Anyone who over owned one these should be compensated for pain and suffering.

If journey is dead and you want to put in neutral to roll, inside of box between seats is a little opening to put screwdriver to allow stifter to move. The wiring harness inside of rubber boot on rear hatch hinge, wire tend to break due to twisting screwing up all door locks and security.

That's actually about right. It's popular to bash Chrysler quality these days. The chances of major problems in any modern cars, whether Toyota or Dodge, in the first 150k miles is tiny. People like you usually don't comment just to praise a certain car when it works as expected, because it's taken as granted. But the rare few who had problems will whine loudly, making it look common when it's actually not, their voices amplified by bandwagon jumpers who think bashing Chrysler quality without ever having owned the model, puts them into the cool crowd.
Although , having owned the model, and changed the battery on it, I wonder what kind of sadist decided to put it down there...

I bought a used 2017 SE, cheap version,, in late summer in 2017 from a Dodge dealership. with 3,100 miles, yes 3100 miles, they had over 10 of these cars and probably used it for service rentals. I paid a total of $15,321 out the door, they wanted to charge me $15,900, I walked out the door got in my car and was driving down the street when the manger call me back and agreed upon my original price. I laughed when the salesman told me the were big sellers, yeah right you got 10 sitting on the lot. I have over 38,000 miles with no problems so far, I plan to replace the battery during the summer as it is a hassel to replace and I don't want to have problems when least expected. I use synthetic motor oil, changed the spark plugs at 30,000, and air filters every 20 000. To me, some of Dodge's recommended service intervals are spaced out way too long.

Well......some of the Journeys manufactured in 2012 and from 2013 onwards have some Fiat components that are not as reliable as the Dodge components. You have to check your oil because very high oil consumption is the norm. Infact there is a class action lawsuit in process right now against Dodge for this very problem. You can Google that.

With my 09 Dodge Journey, I've found the location of the battery lends to battery failure in cold weather. My battery gets cold during nights and non driving times and drags the battery down as it's located down behind the drivers front tire, removal of the battery requires removing the drivers front tire, fender skirt and then turning the wheel all the way to the right to access the battery. Also splashing through puddles can split your battery down the side as mine did a couple of years ago and led to battery acid going everywhere!

    • @stevenleighton1947
      @stevenleighton1947 3 года назад

I've never had to take the wheel off my 2012, 4 cylinder to change the battery. I've driven off road on rocky trails a lot and forded streams without problem. Maybe you are missing the plastic underbody protection that fixes to the front bumper? I's a big piece of moulded plastic that I've broken twice but it protects the battery as well as under the engine and transmission. Good luck!
