What kind of sadistic monster designed those access points for a normal wear item?? Holy snap ... that's beyond insane. Good on ya for figuring out how to get to the struts, let alone changing them!
I have to do this exact same thing to my 2011 Journey, so I greatly appreciate the time you took to go through the entire process practically step by step! I also have the third row seats, so the details on taking those out and reinstalling will additionally help smooth the task.
Dude !!, that was stellar work right there. I just did my rear blower motor this past summer here in Phx, temp was 110 that day. I can't believe the work involved with the Dodge Journey for anything south of the second row. Good job on those struts, thanks for posting.
You made making the decision to have my rear struts replaced by the garage, an easy one. Having cancer in my spine and the bending over and reaching would be too painful, It’s a darned shame that the so called engineers are better at designing puzzles than they are designing reasonably repairable automobiles, it makes me miss my 50’s an 60’s cars.
My 2009 Journey has perforated slits slot where the nuts are. Once I removed bottom tray of suv, I saw and was able to get to those two screws without doing all this work. I saw a spot on his vehicle wherein he could have done what you suggested. I would never do this job his way. I dont believe it was intended for owners to have to do all this themselves or by others to access those two screws. Dodge has a simplier way. He, among others, cant see it.
Really good job on this one, it's really surprising that is was that difficult to get to the top bolts on the struts. Not just a little surprising. Nice to see the other half in the game. Yeah Monroe is the way to go!
Curiosity thanks! Just got notification that I’m going to have to reupload some of my previous videos with voiceover since RUclips doesn’t like the music I used in them. Keep a lookout for those. If you look closely you can see I changed clothes 3 times cause it was 3 days it took to do this.
When you do it yourself it takes time to do things. I took my daughters Hyundai 2010 and made it new again but it took over the winter to do so little by little. She was not using the car at the time so I was able to go over everything, trans fluid and filter synthetic (Amsoil), Brakes complete and I mean everything with pressure bleeding, (you can buy pressure bleeders on Amazon and others. They work really good. Resurfaced the steel wheels and painted, Oil Royal Purple and synthetic filter. Front struts with Monroe quick struts, rears with the Monroe matching shocks. Cost about 1200 but it will put another 10 years on the car. Detail and out the door.. Horn stop working and that is this weeks project along with another oil change.

One main worry is that I don't know if struts decompress to install and risk going past bolt hole and not being able to compress without tool? I seen shocks installed once and mechanic attached top then cur plastic strap holding it compressed out of box, and as soon as it extended just right he pushed bolt through bottom bracket. If he missed it he would have been screwed. Is this not a worry on struts?
You can buy a complete set (struts and coil springs) that are already set up and ready to install. Then all you have to do is remove the two-top strut bolts and the bolt at the bottom of the strut. May cost a little more, but no need to worry about a spring compressor and if you are using it correctly.
Made in mexico by Fiat complicated to work on for instance power stearing hoses alternator starter rear struts 19 in tires all are lenghty time to repair and expensive if you go to t o a dealer but other than that I love my 2011 journey with 167000 km on it
How do you like your Dodge Journey when it comes to reliability? Also I notice you have an awd model, do you have any whining when accelerating at all? Thanks for the video, I think I need to replace my front struts, they don’t seem to be leaking but they make a noice when when going over larger bumps slowly. I’m not sure if I have the guts to do the front struts though, after watching your vid I think I can do the back.
Honestly I should have spent a little more money and bought a better vehicle. The reliability is good for me as far as the engine and trans but the rest of the car is garbage. No whining while accelerating for me. That could be power steering. I need to replace my power steering cooler. it is leaking. Just a lot of bad quality parts on these journeys and that is why they went from $18,000 to just under $9,000 in a couple years.
Arches Mechanic I totally agree with you, we bought a 2014 Dodge Journey rt awd because it was the cheapest with the most options and I honestly like the way it drives and looks, plus I saved 5k. I was going to buy a Toyota Highlander but I thought why not save some money lol, It’s my first and last domestic car that’s for sure. I had a Hyundai Tucson before this journey and not a thing broke on it for years. How long have you had you journey? Have you posted all the problems you have had with it on your channel or is there a lot more?
Jason B I have posted in a playlist all of my problems. I had to delete the best video due to the music I used in it. The biggest problem I have had was the rear hatch wiring harness will start breaking wires in between the vehicle and the hatch where the rubber boot is. It has never left me stranded. Other than the wiring it’s just been poor build quality. Front bumper falling off due to broken clips. Interior seat trim breaking due to a drunk and stoned dude getting in the passenger side. The transmission has been acting funny lately. I think it just needs drained and refilled. Haven’t had time to look at it yet to see though.
How many miles are on your journey? I got a 2011 with AWD, Pentastar V6 and about 156k miles on it. So far its been good for me, minor hiccups a long the way.
Thankfully I have a 2009 journey sxt that has no value left on it. Iam cutting through the panels with my grinder and that steel cover to get at the bolt.... No way am I going through all this what size socket?. I finally gotta job for my extra long extension socket bar. Little bit of duct tape afterwards and in 30min- 1hr. And ever need replacement again just peel that tape off.

Galen Acevedo hope it goes smoothly!
Thanks for the tutorial. I'm having to do this to my 2010 this weekend. Spent the extra $$ (only $50 more..) and bought a compete strut/spring set up.
PCC Telecommunications it’ll be a little different I think because it’s the previous model but should be similar

Damn all of that work to replace rear struts
SMKL32 yeah. A big pain in the ass

Shitty to heat about the cancer. Keep spirits up. You never know what miracles lie.
The 5 passenger models have access panels for the rear struts no disassembly required
Which models are those !, good to know.
This is excellent work bro
I think to make some opening in the trim panel to reach that nuts.

Great video man, awesome step by step 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Mannnnnn, I thank God for you. Where do I send your beer money 🙏🏾😂😂👏🏾😎
WarriorPriest keep it and get yourself some. You deserve it after taking this on!

Curiosity very nice!
Great job
One more question,...did you do the front struts as well ?
I didn’t. They weren’t bad. The tears were bad according to dodge.
Thank u
You said chalk the front tires after you jacked the vehicle up. What’s this do? What will happen if you don’t chalk the front tires?
I do this for safety in case the jack moves, the car can’t roll

Thanks for such a great and easy to follow video. I have a question, have you done a video on how to replace front and rear sway bar D bushings.
I haven't
How long did this take you to do? The garage is trying to charge me 5hours
Yeah. 5 hours seems about right. It took me 10 with filming and taking my time.
How long did it take you? Full day or more?
Shawn Hanna it took me a total of 6-8 hours
Arches Mechanic I have to do the same thing on same year of journey so thank you very much on the tutorial!
Shawn Hanna no problem. Pretty sure I covered it all. It also might have taken me longer since I was filming.

Great video couldn’t explain it any better!!!! How long did it take you?
Giovanni Loya took about 6 hours with all the filming. If I didn’t have to film it probably would have taken 2
Que pinche estupidez de desarmar media camioneta para poder remplazar los amortiguadores traseros 😡😡😡😡😡
Is this all wheel drive ?
Jonathan Peirce yes
Jeeze...😳🤯

Brad Ross I’ve seen it done like this before too. Why couldn’t they just have put in an access panel?!
@@ArchesMechanic The engineers need to be taking in a back room lol...
Brad Ross 5 passenger models have access panels!
What a horrible design, just for replacing a rear strut. You did an excellent job, even just by yourself!
Nah man I'm cutting right through the plastic then I'll glue it back together
Thanks man. I'm supposed to be a professional lmao.
For God's sake I work to replace a suspension, it takes work !!
Great job,but what a worst conception from dodge!
