This movie is based on a novel from the 60s where a girl has similar abilities. That original girl is the "aunty witch" here. Her last leap ended up erasing everyone's memory, so you get this sad bittersweet feeling seeing her knowing she never remembered.
This is just my opinion but, Chiaki saying he’s waiting in the future and Makoto saying she has something she wants to do have something to do with the paintings. Maybe one of her purpose became to save the painting to the future so that Chiaki can see it. And this is their meeting in the future.
The countdown on Makoto's arm went from '00' to '01' because after Chiaki "fixed" the accident with Kousuke on the bike, he also undid Makoto's last leap. Makoto says as much just before she decides to make that one final jump. And since she is going back to before Chiaki use his last leapt, she undid it for him. As least that is what she hoped would happen. That is why she anxiously confirmed the extra count on Chiaki's arm after handing him the used-up walnut and said "just as I thought!". But there are still many inconsistencies in the film that one would be best advised not to think about too much because it was entertaining enough and didn't really need 100% logical consistency (like how is she going to "come running" to see Chiaki in the future, unless it is the very near future, or Chiaki really likes older women, or why, if Chiaki undid Makoto's last leap does Makoto still remember using up all her leaps?)

It's like.. accept responsibility that your path bears issues and you have to suck it up and accept that they are yours. Deal with it. Kharma demands responsibility for the self to be gratefully emancipated and dissolved. Maybe it's conscious like that.

So he needed someone to take care of it and keep it safe. And thats why he’s. kind of deceiving this girls into falling in love with him and telling them he will be waiting.
That’s just fundamentally untrue. By ‘world’ do you mean outside Japan? Because he has been popular in Japan since his time working on Digimon. As well as the Digimon Movie that managed to become a minor hit in the States. He’s also been Oscar nominated for Mirai, which did not deserve its nomination whatsoever.
Guys watching it again made me realise the aunt said at 47:30 he said he would come back like chaike said to her . And the aunt is working to restore the art . And mokoto said she would also save it for him . Is like the same . Maybe someone just want the painting to be save all time and come back in time to assign the work to somebody. I believe that Chiaki's desire to see the painting in the future is what helps give Makoto, purpose, or atleast something to strive for. Once he sees the painting in the future, he will have no reason to go back to her time. If he does go back to that time, it won't be to see her. What the two of them had was fleeting, it was a product of summer. Summer love. He fell in love with her time and wanted a summer romance, with the kind of girl who would allow him to enjoy that time to it's fullest. She however was not comfortable with the whole more than friends thing, which is unfortunate because that's all they'll ever have, in that time line. She'll preserve the painting but spend her life with someone else. Imagine if she was his mother! Thank god they didn't kiss. Imagine if she was his first love, from a specific time line.
This movie is sooo good, next time you guys should (please) react to "Tokyo godfathers", is one of my all time favorites, there also "Millennium actress, Paprika..". Great video

Because of that leap, time rolled back (1) from zero to one, Chiaki took her bike instead (2) with the broken brakes. As you go back to the tempura a lot, consider all the shitty HS things you've seen in the movie, he could totally blame her for trying to actually set it up, probably with some water or other thing that would splash oil, with the cabbage still being an accident.

I remember when I first watched it, I immediately googled blogs on it, cause I was in disbelief on lack of a solid ending or conclusion of the future. The comment that grabbed me was that this movie ending was Fan Fiction fodder. Truly, we got such a vague idea of what the future is like and when that future is. Then learning about the history of the Aunt Witch made me even more frusterated lol. But that vague ending and uncertain feeling made it stick with me.
The point of this film is that you can't waste your time because you don't know what might happen. Telling you what might happen would go against that exact point, so the movie doesn't do that.

12 years later, I remember when I watched this for the first time. It moved me into ruining my life with bad choices.
There's a couple on a bicycle when they're next to the river. I think it's symbolic of the two of them traveling through time, together.
