The story of a stranger going to a small town, discovering hidden darkness, and usually losing badly, is a standard in folk horror movies. It's fantastic in this film that Angel wins by deliberately changing the tone to an 80s action movie, where the hero generally comes out on top.
The original Wicker Man was one such horror movie - starring Edward Woodward as the unfortunate cop from the mainland, come to investigate a mysterious Scottish island (Midsummer Isle) in the search for a missing person

Fun fact: almost all of the Neighbourhood Watch members are veterans of stage and screen, but many of them are known for their roles in horror films and as villains. To wit... Edward Woodward (Professor Weaver) famously played another overly-straitlaced cop who found himself investigating sinister doings revolving around a fanatical cult of villagers in the movie The Wicker Man, and was also the original lead of the TV series The Equaliser. Timothy Dalton (Simon Skinner) was Neville Sinclair in The Rocketeer. He also appears as Rassilon in the Doctor Who story "The End of Time" and was James Bond in the late 80s. Billie Whitelaw (Mrs. Cooper) was Mrs Blaylock, the Satanist nanny of Damien in The Omen, played Violet Kray (mother of Reg and Ronnie Kray) in The Krays opposite the Brothers Kemp, and the voice of Aughra, The Keeper of Secrets from The Dark Crystal. Eric Mason (Mr Cooper) was the Executioner in A Man For All Seasons and made small appearances in the likes of Fahrenheit 451, Blood on Satan's Claw and Grave of the Vampire. Stuart Wilson (Dr. Hatcher) was the corrupt cop/gun-runner in Lethal Weapon 3 and Don Rafael Montero in The Mask of Zorro. Paul Freeman (Rev. Shooter) was Indiana Jones's rival archaeologist Belloq in Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Ivan Ooze, the crazy purple villain from Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie. Kenneth Cranham (Mr Reaper) was Dr. Philip Channard in Hellbound: Hellraiser II and Jimmy Price in Layer Cake. Tim Barlow (Mr Treacher) was an ex-soldier who took up acting in the late 60s, mostly in small roles, but the reason he's playing Treacher is that he lost his hearing in the 1950s when testing a high velocity Muzzle Rifle for the British Army and was deaf until recently, when surgery to fit a cochlear implant allowed him to recover some of his hearing. Julia Deakin (Mary Porter) was in Pegg and Wright's sitcom Spaced as Marsha the Landlady; her husband Ray's actor, Peter Wight, is best known (to me at least) as Brian the Secuity Guard from Mike Leigh's Naked, starring David Thewlis. Patricia Franklin (Mrs Roper the shopkeeper) appears in the Winchester from Shaun of the Dead, and was a regularly appearing castmember in five of the Carry On films. Rory McCann as "Lurch" is obviously the Hound from Game of Thrones but before all that, he appeared in commercials for Scott's Porage Oats. And Alice Lowe (Tina the shopgirl) is in LOADS of stuff, but in particular she's known for Garth Mahenghi's Darkplace, the movies Sightseers and Prevenge (which she starred in, wrote and directed *WHILST HEAVILY PREGNANT*), and the Black Mirror interactive movie Bandersnatch.
This is maybe one of the few "perfectly" written movies, in that almost LITERALLY every line in the movie is a set-up to a future event or a payoff for an earlier set-up

5:20 "Fascism...wonderful" You are one of the few reactors who has noticed this little snippet of clever dialogue that turns out to be a portent of things to come. I love the whole crossword gag and it's callback during the gunfight. Especially the subtle touch where she fires ACROSS the street ( "Fascist!" ), then Angel shoots the flower basket that falls DOWN onto her head ( "Hag..." ). Another interesting point is the choice of gun she uses - an S1-100. This weapon has an fascinating history. The Treaty of Versailles after WW1 left Germany was under severe prohibitions regarding weapon development. The S1-100 was an Austrian / Swiss collaboration between Steyr and Solothurn. But..... not really. Because the Swiss company Solothurn was really a front for Rheinmetall who bought them in the late 1920's and the S1-100 was a development of earlier German designs. Rheinmetall also bought a majority shareholding in the Austrian weapon manufacturer Steyr for the actual production. In 1938, Austria was taken over - Anschluss. The Steyr factory and existing stocks of S1-100 weapons used by the Austrian police etc fell into German hands and designated the MP34. I'd love to know if this was a deliberate choice by the film makers to give this particular weapon to the character who shouts " Fascist ", or if it was just a coincidence.
I loved him in The Book Group, also starring Michelle Gomez!! and yes, Rory McCann is very handsome. PS - James Lance (Trent Crimm: The Independent in Ted Lasso) also has a big role
As a testament to Edgar Wright's skills: There are two long one-shots in Shaun Of The Dead, which were done on the first day of shooting. Edgar chose to do that because it was his first feature and the veteran crew didn't trust this young upstart yet, so he knocked out the two hardest scenes on day one to prove himself.
@@ehwren nah the sheer unexpectedness of “fingered up the duck pond” paired with Simon’s drink spit out is unreal for me. Judge Judy an executioner is solid as well
So few people point out the late legend Edward Woodward - the ORIGINAL Equaliser, long before Denzel got into it. Wonderfully foul mouth in the outtakes 😅
I'm not one of those guys who often watches director's commentaries but Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg do one for this film that is genuinely incredible. The amount of easter eggs and trivia they tell you about in it makes you appreciate this film even more, and it kinds of blows your mind with how many jokes you may have missed on your first watches. Also its funny you mentioned Baby Driver at the end. Long before he made that film he directed a music video for the track Blue Song by Mint Royale, that was used as inspiration and recreated for the opening scene of Baby Driver
Saw this one opening weekend! This is one of the few movies I consider to be perfect. Great writing, dead funny, amazing cast with awesome chemistry, whip smart editing and sound. I could go on and on. It pays off every joke and set up splendidly and swims through tone shifts effortlessly. If yuo haven't already, I'd suggest checking out every one of Edgar Wright's films. In my estimation, none of them are bad
Among so many perfect elements (that others have already commented on), the music over the opening montage is "Goody Two Shoes" by Adam and the Ants. Perfect tune for the perfect cop 😂
You've just watched a film with: A James Bond. Professor Slughorn from The Harry Potter series. Walder Frey and The Hound from "Game Of Thrones". King Vyseris from "House Of The Dragon". The villain from "Lethal Weapon 3". One of the villains from "Raiders Of The Lost Ark". The man who played Pompey Magnus in the TV series "Rome". The woman who played Queen Elizabeth in "The Crown". And the man who played the original Equaliser now played by Denzel Washington. Now THAT is a stellar cast.
Sharp script, great cast, awesome directing -- one of my favorite movies. Great reaction! Edgar Wright is awesome. Shaun of the Dead, Baby Driver, Scott Pilgrm vs the World. The guy is a fantastic director.
The Wicker Man was a major influence for this film, and its star Edward Woodward played the head of the Neighbourhood Watch. He was also The Equaliser back in the eighties.
Best reaction to Hot Fuzz I've ever seen! Amazing work guys❤️🙌🏻 As you loved this I think you'd love "Attack the Block". It's another Edgar Wright collab and it's also John Boyega's debut (he's a baby), it's also got Nick Frost and Jodie Whittaker (Doctor Who) in it. It's brilliant, scary and so funny.❤
The cornetto trilogy is one of the best ever and I think it’s criminal that Pegg, Frost and Wright have not made a movie together in so long now. Please give ‘Paul’ a watch though if you haven’t already.
If you love Edgar Wright’s stuff, his first project was a TV show called Spaced, also starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and a few others from the cornetto trilogy movies. That show was made in 1999 and 2000 and it still holds up beautifully.
This movie has one of the tightest scripts, ever. There are so many lines earlier in the movie which come back later. You need to rewatch it multiple times, but you’ll still miss some of the references. Like when the Andys say everyone is armed, farmers and farmers mums. Then the farmer’s mother has a shotgun and everyone in the town is armed. A reference that only Brits would get, the code for the evidence locker is 999, which is the emergency number in the UK. Equivalent to 911 in the US.
Just a brilliant film from start to finish with a superb cast. The best of The Cornetto Trilogy by far. Painfully funny scenes the showdown in the town when Angel returns is hilarious, a send up of Point Break and Bad Boys, and about every action film ever made. Just brilliant!
The thing about Hot Fuzz is that every time I fucking watch it, I find some new detail that had previously escaped my notice that enhances the larger narrative.
Here’s one way you know you’re getting old: finding out it’s possible for these guys to be knowledgeable be Edgar Wright fans who haven’t seen Hot Fuzz or Shaun of the Dead… cause, you know, the man has had a career since these movies came out.
I love your videos. It's weird because even though I've seen the films, they seem funnier watching alongside you, and I up seeing so many more things and appreciate them even more. So thank you.
Okay a lot of people don't know this but here's a little bit of trivia about Hot fuzz the Santa Claus that stabbed Simon pegg's character was played by Peter Jackson he was uncredited in the credits at the end but that is Peter Jackson the same director who did brain dead, the Frighteners and Lord of the rings
I'm glad this has travelled to the US, as a Brit this is one of my top 5 films. Perfectly written, with the perfect balance of action, comedy, gore, emotion, cinematography. The timing, the acting and the cut make it timeless and upon re-watching it, loses none of the charm. Knowing the plot makes it more fun seeing how everything is laid out, and with great acting and filmography it's a pleasure to do so.

Might be my favorite action movie ever. Its an homage that pays fan service but still creates its own narrative that rivals the legacy that came before it with legitimate twists, payoffs and callbacks that surpass even the legends
I still say it to this day, it’s a perfect movie. Action, tight script, plot never stops, always funny, I genuinely don’t have a single negative about this film. 10/10.
The first time I watched this I had a great time at home with a few beers. I've since watched other reactors and they have a great time. This is the first time I've watched a reaction channel have this much fun that I could share in just like the first time. That's special as there will never be a first time the second chance. Until now. It's a great cut for copyright law and everything a reaction channel should be. The writing was top tier, the film editing was mwah! And to repeat myself the reaction video editing for copyright is great. Thank you for the great time and I still have twelve minutes left to enjoy.
Hot Fuzz is GREAT✊🏽 The editing on the opening sequence made me sit up instantly riveted: I yelled WAIT we have to watch that editing again! Great fun smart hilarious movie, satirizing many things and none more than the legendary “deadly British charm.” (Deadly charm is not only British of course but they probably perfected it first, and coined the term)😉

Brilliant, nice surprise, thanks, the big guy (Yarp) was "The Hound" from game of Thrones.
Trolley boy Michael :)
Look up his commercials.
The Hound and this role do not show how handsome he actually is, lol.
I’ve seen this film sooo many times and never realise dhe was the The Hound before!
I loved him in The Book Group, also starring Michelle Gomez!! and yes, Rory McCann is very handsome.
PS - James Lance (Trent Crimm: The Independent in Ted Lasso) also has a big role
Paddy Considine (one of the aviator-mustache detectives) was King Viserys in House of the Dragon too.
I think it's my number 1 movie I have never gotten bored of it, I learn something new everytime watching it. It's bloody great!
The old man white hair and the glasses was Edward Woodward, star of the original TV show The Equalizer!!
@@GaspachoSoup and the original wicker man
As a testament to Edgar Wright's skills:
There are two long one-shots in Shaun Of The Dead, which were done on the first day of shooting.
Edgar chose to do that because it was his first feature and the veteran crew didn't trust this young upstart yet, so he knocked out the two hardest scenes on day one to prove himself.
The editor, Chris Dickens, won an Oscar the next year for Slumdog Millionaire.
"I don't know nothing about no skellingtons".. probably the funniest line in the movie for me
@@ehwren nah the sheer unexpectedness of “fingered up the duck pond” paired with Simon’s drink spit out is unreal for me. Judge Judy an executioner is solid as well
@@coreyrees840 yea, this was a great script.. a lot of favs
So few people point out the late legend Edward Woodward - the ORIGINAL Equaliser, long before Denzel got into it. Wonderfully foul mouth in the outtakes 😅
Also, was famously in The Wicker Man, which this heavily references.
@@timaustin2000 loved The Equaliser when I was little, theme tune still gives me the creeps 😄
@@SSD_Penumbra that’s the role people keep associating with him whenever I listen to reviews of this film. I forgot he did the OG equalizer series.
I absolutely love this movie!
I like how you guys recognized Waldor Frey from GOT but not The Hound lol.
Edgar is a fan of Dr Who of old. We are still waiting some 19yrs later for our Edgar Wright episode of Who.
Aren't we also still waiting for the Peter Jackson (directed) episode of Who too ?
Doctor Who is lost
No its not lost at all.@@Psycorde
@@PsycordeNo. You are lost.
Among so many perfect elements (that others have already commented on), the music over the opening montage is "Goody Two Shoes" by Adam and the Ants. Perfect tune for the perfect cop 😂
Santa was Peter Jackson, Lord of the Rings director
Ex-girlfriend in the forensic gear was Cate Blanchet
Love your reaction to this fantastic movie! 👍
one of my all-time favorite movies to watch when i'm stressed, so excited to watch this video!
You've just watched a film with:
A James Bond.
Missed opportunity to say "same person" about Walder Frey from GoT and Filch from Harry Potter... 😄
isent he cato the elder? the one they couldnt understand dialect of older policeman
And the original Equalizer
And Ken Barlow's first wife!
Edward Woodward was also in the gritty TV series 'Callan' - a 60s gem. If you are in the UK, you will recognise comedians, etc, in small parts.
There is no filler or fat on this script. Basically every line is either a joke or a set-up for a joke later on in the film.
_And I looked, and behold, a pale horse! And its rider's name was Death, and Hades followed him._
“I’m not Janine” Got me dying laughing 😂
Sharp script, great cast, awesome directing -- one of my favorite movies. Great reaction! Edgar Wright is awesome. Shaun of the Dead, Baby Driver, Scott Pilgrm vs the World. The guy is a fantastic director.
The Wicker Man was a major influence for this film, and its star Edward Woodward played the head of the Neighbourhood Watch. He was also The Equaliser back in the eighties.
Just the perfect reaction / review. I loved this! Brought new energy to one of my all-time favorite movies, if that's possible. But, you did it!
Angel was gonna have a love interest, but the role got cut.. They gave a lot of the lines to Danny instead, and it just works :D
@@RatelRegalement I'm glad they cut out the romance because the bromance is sooo much better haha
Best reaction to Hot Fuzz I've ever seen! Amazing work guys❤️🙌🏻
As you loved this I think you'd love "Attack the Block".
Everyone who clicked the like button did it for the greater good.
The greater good.
@@craigmarriott6759 shut it!
For .. the greater good hahaha 😂😂😂 you gotta love it
This movie has one of the tightest scripts, ever.
The letters NWA were on the office door for the Neighbourhood Watch.
@@solitarymaninblack Was waiting for the penny to drop on what the Neighbourhood Watch Alliance's initials are lol.
Comin' straight outta Sandford
“Make Sanford great again” line is truly a mind blower
Especially when this came out years before 2016.
One of the best action comedies of all-time. The Neighborhood Watch Alliance(NWA) seem to have a problem with the police
The "Yarp" guy is the Hound in Game of thrones.
I’ve watched this film so many times and never twigged to that! 😂
The thing about Hot Fuzz is that every time I fucking watch it, I find some new detail that had previously escaped my notice that enhances the larger narrative.
Don't forget to watch the film "Paul" they did as well, boys . . .
Have you seen Baz Luhrman's Romeo+Juliet guys?
It makes the play so much funnier. BANG! 🤣🤣🤣
So many great choices to react to lately!
❤
Here’s one way you know you’re getting old: finding out it’s possible for these guys to be knowledgeable be Edgar Wright fans who haven’t seen Hot Fuzz or Shaun of the Dead… cause, you know, the man has had a career since these movies came out.
18:28 I must’ve watched this film 30 times and I’ve never noticed Danny was wearing his cowboy hat under the covering 😂
I love your videos. It's weird because even though I've seen the films, they seem funnier watching alongside you, and I up seeing so many more things and appreciate them even more. So thank you.
This remains one of my all time favorite movies. Absolutely classic.
Fun fact: "Genine" is played by Cate Blanchett uncredited. It's a masterclass in acting with just your eyes and voice every time you watch that scene.
Fantastic film. So many scenes are tributes to 80's 90's cop budy movies. Love the model village fight scene copying the final fight in Lethal Weapon
I'm not usually a fan of these type of videos, but seeing you two react to this reminds me of the first time I saw Hot Fuzz. Such a great film ❤
Shaun of the Dead and The World's End to complete the trilogy are MUST reacts!
This is a comedy-mystery that is a decent mystery.
Ah, love it guys. Some good cameos in this... They guy who played Lurch/Yarp also played the Hound in Game of Thrones... and Paddy Constantine who played King Viserys in House of the Dragon plays a detective in this.
Also Cate Blanchett as his girlfriend at the beginning.
I forgot how much I love that movie. One of my all time favorites. Probably in the hundreds for time I have watched this. You guys had all the great reactions and look like you were on the edge of your seat for these movies. Fun time.
This is such a joyous reaction. Great to see you enjoying this amazing film.
Might be my favorite action movie ever. Its an homage that pays fan service but still creates its own narrative that rivals the legacy that came before it with legitimate twists, payoffs and callbacks that surpass even the legends
danny wears my local footy team bristol rovers’ top in this film🤣🤣love it
I really enjoyed watching this reaction guys, y'all made me laugh! good job!
Possibly the best reaction to this film.. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 You boys got it all the way ..👌🏻
Top film by top producers 🔥
It’s one where the more you watch it the more you catch too, I’ve watched it so many times and still catch something new each time
My fav Simon Pegg movie 🤣🤣🤣
This was so damn fun! Great content fellas.
The cast is a who's who of UK acting, even the minor characters.
I still say it to this day, it’s a perfect movie. Action, tight script, plot never stops, always funny, I genuinely don’t have a single negative about this film. 10/10.
You can't appreciate how good this was until you know who the NWA actors were....
The amount of cameos in this film is ridiculous!
Great reaction to one of my favourite films. Really enjoyed this
The first time I watched this I had a great time at home with a few beers.
Easily one of my favorite movies, Edgar Wright is insanely good.
By the way, the gas station cashier IS Edgar Wright.
It's not Edgr, why do people keep posting this?? The actor is Colin Michael Carmichael.
Everything from these two comedians is gold.
Hot Fuzz is GREAT✊🏽
The editing on the opening sequence made me sit up instantly riveted: I yelled WAIT we have to watch that editing again!
Great fun smart hilarious movie, satirizing many things and none more than the legendary “deadly British charm.”
(Deadly charm is not only British of course but they probably perfected it first, and coined the term)😉
The guy in the aviators is Paddy Considine who plays Viserys Targaryen in House Of The Dragon…
Edward Woodward is in this, he's the 80s Equalizer, before Denzel took the role up for the reboot
Rory McCann as Michael.. Yarp.. it's the Hound. Paddy Considine as one of the detectives.. Viseryus. Kate Blanchett as his ex.. Peter Jackson is the stabbing Santa at the beginning.
13:04 That V-sign Danny does there is the British equivalent of the middle finger. Fyi.
