Great and fun episode! I agree with Gruff. There is no story reason for them to stick together after meeting the duke... I'm curious to where this could lead.
I'm a huge dragon fan and I am PSYCHED that Mark is giving them the love they deserve. He's right, dnd dragons are rubbish. This is how you do dragon's right. Of course, they seem OP. That should be the point, they're gigantic. I'll never forget playing Dragon's Dogma where the dragon there was very much like 'Get stronger and face me.' and then you spend the whole game just trying to prepare for this battle that takes you through the nightmares of fighting something so huge and it was the first time I felt myself truly amazed about the scope of it. (If the revive system didn't exist, no one would be able to defeat this thing - and you see the countless bodies where it was properly laying siege to old armies. Same with dnd, though, you can revive so the threat level isn't as great. Especially because... probably a level 15 party can defeat an **Ancient** dragon. If you can't have that option, these dragons are INFINITELY more terrifying to face.) Mark upping the stats and actually giving them genuine lore for why people haven't overthrown them - because they are POWERHOUSES as they should be - I just really love.
That runescape 1 shot was AMAZING i'd watch more of that ngl but it does depends how much more. idk if i'd want a neverending 200 ep campaign of it :P The only thing i've not watched is the previous campaign aerois. Just a little fun fact I wanted to throw in here, according to Volo’s Guide to Monsters Kobolds can actually live to be 100+ years old but just “rarely do so”. Just imagine the size of the Tarik family if all of them lived to be that old…
Yes, the avrage life expectancy of kobolds is 6 days, but thats because quality of life and safety is the Worst among all races. And people are racist.

I think the dragonborn are a race of their own, delivered to the world through magic rituals. Mark, our benevolent and omnipotent dm, may decide they can ascend to full dragonhood so who knows really...

I agree. I think it has a lot of potential but think it should be limited to a fate dice per short rest if you want to use it for your player. It seems like as it is currently that its just a lot of back and forth boosts, which are what modifiers are supposed to do anyway. Just my opinion of course. I don't think it impacts too too much currently
It's pretty much Fantasy Flights Star Wars Destiny Tokens. Which works better there since it has a dedicated die with slightly more variation (possibility of doubling up). Though I feel like any system that lasts per session is more likely to be exploited as said session nears its end. And yes I'd like to see it do more. But the capacity for that has yet to be built out and relies on the players to request big asks.
Well, latte fun being a coffee shop & the proprietor being a cow does prompt an immediate question on the precise source of the milk used for the drinks (implication that it was farm fresh from the owner herself, as per Trott's pregnancy joke). I don't know if there's another layer to it though (at least some milk foam :-).
SPOILER: I can't believe after all the work they did to find out more about the demonic magic in the lamps that they didn't inform the Duke about it AT ALL! Hopefully the high priest sends word and they get an audience with him because holy moly that was a huge thing to leave out of their audience!
I think Mark has cleverly steered them away from doing that, both in and out of character. Even the introduction of the renown system, its kind of setting the foundation that the group will have to build trust in this region, gain evidence and present a strong case to a then allied duke.

Yes they may not be able to accuse the guild but it's basically like finding a bomb in a street, having a meeting with the chief of police and not saying anything. They had the evidence and reliable testimonies from Blackwing, the High Priestess, That guy from the Blacksmith's guild and Lamplighter Teresa. Apart from the Lamplighter those are all prominent figures in the town.
@@AlybobsonWhile I do agree with you they've kind of just been guided (or maybe coached is a better word) away from that course of action. I don't entirely agree with the reasoning given however. It seems to be the gamey thing of PCs being the doers so NPCs, no matter how powerful, aren't doing things for the players. And while that is a necessary division of labour there is certainly a burden of narrative that isn't being met here.
@@AlybobsonDidn’t Blackwing say that the evidence they had wasn’t enough, if they brought it up they might have run the risk of the lamplighters catching wind of this and executing their plan ahead of time.
I think it would have been unwise to potentially taint the Duke's favour by bringing guild politics up. There's no way he'd have taken their word for it and with their tenuous evidence, the best they could expect is that he'd have someone look into it, and his son already is doing that. Also, the priest they met before has already passed on word about the fiend in the lamp so the people who need to know about that already do; bringing it up again still wouldn't change much. And that's the best case scenario - at worst the Duke might have taken it as a baseless attack on his longstanding and well-trusted friends by a group of strangers including a gold Dragonborn who he clearly has some prejudice against. I think not mentioning it was wise, and I'm certain they'll get another chance to do something about that soon.
I get the reason but man I am not a fan of the way the mark has the duke rewarded them. Thank you for what you’ve done you remind me of myself. Here’s a piece of shit that in order to get to a livable condition you have to dump every coin you have and do quests for more because you probably won’t have enough on hand. It feels more like a punishment.
tbf its a rather large sum of moneis worth by the sounds of it... for not a small job.. but fairly small mission. sure it needs repairs. like what 1k gold? and its haunted. and i might be mistakeing but i belive i heard mark said the land as it stands has a value of "10's of thousands of gold" u can check at "1:48:30" maybe more maybe less if mark changes it later on. not only that its theirs without haveing too pay a tithe 2 times a year like every other land owner would have too. that alone has a staggering value over years. for the mission they did a piece of land worth 20'000 or more gold, free off 2 yearly taxes for life... seems like a VERY VERY valueable reward. even more so when u consider the 600 golds worth mission they just did, sounded too me just as hard.... but then again im no expert.
Well, it is very in keeping with feudalism to give them a fief, I thought it was quite the coup this early on. They could probably sell off or lease part of the acquired land (it sounded sizable) and put the proceeds immediately back into the tavern repairs, if they wanted to expedite that. It doesn't seem like a low reward to me with that in mind, especially for the prospect of passive income (recouping any initial out of pocket) & not needing to pay for room & board -- squatter ghost notwithstanding. :-) Story wise, I do wonder if the duke didn't have ulterior motives for choosing this, especially waving away the haunting concerns so cavalierly. Maybe he aimed to test the party's capabilities, and also instill loyalty with his generosity, with an asset that for him was being unused/not delivering any value? Two birds, one stone sort of thing.
Ophelia is open about her nature that disturbs others. There's no real need to guess on where she stands or what she represents. Everything about her boils down to cultural and religious differences. Xantheus on the other hand is a figure shrouded in mystery. Some members of the party have seen that he has no problem lying to keep his secrets hidden, even to them. He only gives half truths and eerie diversions. Not really someone you can place that much faith in, outside of combat encounters.

I'm a huge dragon fan and I am PSYCHED that Mark is giving them the love they deserve. He's right, dnd dragons are rubbish. This is how you do dragon's right. Of course, they seem OP. That should be the point, they're gigantic. I'll never forget playing Dragon's Dogma where the dragon there was very much like 'Get stronger and face me.' and then you spend the whole game just trying to prepare for this battle that takes you through the nightmares of fighting something so huge and it was the first time I felt myself truly amazed about the scope of it. (If the revive system didn't exist, no one would be able to defeat this thing - and you see the countless bodies where it was properly laying siege to old armies. Same with dnd, though, you can revive so the threat level isn't as great. Especially because... probably a level 15 party can defeat an **Ancient** dragon. If you can't have that option, these dragons are INFINITELY more terrifying to face.) Mark upping the stats and actually giving them genuine lore for why people haven't overthrown them - because they are POWERHOUSES as they should be - I just really love.
That runescape 1 shot was AMAZING i'd watch more of that ngl but it does depends how much more. idk if i'd want a neverending 200 ep campaign of it :P

I agree. I think it has a lot of potential but think it should be limited to a fate dice per short rest if you want to use it for your player. It seems like as it is currently that its just a lot of back and forth boosts, which are what modifiers are supposed to do anyway. Just my opinion of course. I don't think it impacts too too much currently
It's pretty much Fantasy Flights Star Wars Destiny Tokens. Which works better there since it has a dedicated die with slightly more variation (possibility of doubling up).
Though I feel like any system that lasts per session is more likely to be exploited as said session nears its end.
And yes I'd like to see it do more. But the capacity for that has yet to be built out and relies on the players to request big asks.

Can someone explain the Latte Fun / Cow wildheart joke / reference? I want to delude myself that I'm in on the joke.
Well, latte fun being a coffee shop & the proprietor being a cow does prompt an immediate question on the precise source of the milk used for the drinks (implication that it was farm fresh from the owner herself, as per Trott's pregnancy joke).
I don't know if there's another layer to it though (at least some milk foam :-).

I can't believe after all the work they did to find out more about the demonic magic in the lamps that they didn't inform the Duke about it AT ALL! Hopefully the high priest sends word and they get an audience with him because holy moly that was a huge thing to leave out of their audience!
I think Mark has cleverly steered them away from doing that, both in and out of character.
Even the introduction of the renown system, its kind of setting the foundation that the group will have to build trust in this region, gain evidence and present a strong case to a then allied duke.

Yes they may not be able to accuse the guild but it's basically like finding a bomb in a street, having a meeting with the chief of police and not saying anything. They had the evidence and reliable testimonies from Blackwing, the High Priestess, That guy from the Blacksmith's guild and Lamplighter Teresa. Apart from the Lamplighter those are all prominent figures in the town.

I don't entirely agree with the reasoning given however. It seems to be the gamey thing of PCs being the doers so NPCs, no matter how powerful, aren't doing things for the players.
And while that is a necessary division of labour there is certainly a burden of narrative that isn't being met here.

I think it would have been unwise to potentially taint the Duke's favour by bringing guild politics up. There's no way he'd have taken their word for it and with their tenuous evidence, the best they could expect is that he'd have someone look into it, and his son already is doing that. Also, the priest they met before has already passed on word about the fiend in the lamp so the people who need to know about that already do; bringing it up again still wouldn't change much. And that's the best case scenario - at worst the Duke might have taken it as a baseless attack on his longstanding and well-trusted friends by a group of strangers including a gold Dragonborn who he clearly has some prejudice against. I think not mentioning it was wise, and I'm certain they'll get another chance to do something about that soon.

I get the reason but man I am not a fan of the way the mark has the duke rewarded them. Thank you for what you’ve done you remind me of myself. Here’s a piece of shit that in order to get to a livable condition you have to dump every coin you have and do quests for more because you probably won’t have enough on hand. It feels more like a punishment.
tbf its a rather large sum of moneis worth by the sounds of it... for not a small job.. but fairly small mission. sure it needs repairs. like what 1k gold? and its haunted. and i might be mistakeing but i belive i heard mark said the land as it stands has a value of "10's of thousands of gold" u can check at "1:48:30" maybe more maybe less if mark changes it later on. not only that its theirs without haveing too pay a tithe 2 times a year like every other land owner would have too. that alone has a staggering value over years. for the mission they did a piece of land worth 20'000 or more gold, free off 2 yearly taxes for life... seems like a VERY VERY valueable reward. even more so when u consider the 600 golds worth mission they just did, sounded too me just as hard.... but then again im no expert.
Well, it is very in keeping with feudalism to give them a fief, I thought it was quite the coup this early on. They could probably sell off or lease part of the acquired land (it sounded sizable) and put the proceeds immediately back into the tavern repairs, if they wanted to expedite that. It doesn't seem like a low reward to me with that in mind, especially for the prospect of passive income (recouping any initial out of pocket) & not needing to pay for room & board -- squatter ghost notwithstanding. :-)
Story wise, I do wonder if the duke didn't have ulterior motives for choosing this, especially waving away the haunting concerns so cavalierly. Maybe he aimed to test the party's capabilities, and also instill loyalty with his generosity, with an asset that for him was being unused/not delivering any value? Two birds, one stone sort of thing.

Ophelia is open about her nature that disturbs others. There's no real need to guess on where she stands or what she represents. Everything about her boils down to cultural and religious differences.
Xantheus on the other hand is a figure shrouded in mystery. Some members of the party have seen that he has no problem lying to keep his secrets hidden, even to them. He only gives half truths and eerie diversions. Not really someone you can place that much faith in, outside of combat encounters.
