    The parallel in the end with the kids was also ingenious. Ame decided to be a wolf after finding himself despite being afraid as a child. While the other one chose to stay human when she was the most wolf like as a kid.

      Yeah, she is a people pleaser for sure. Always sacrificing for everyone like she has no personality or self worth. The moment the wolf guy doesn't show up for the "date" I would have been GONE. To my warm safe home. Instead of sitting on a street corner in the dark like an invitation to abuse me. She created all her hardships herself.

    One of my all time favorite movies. I had my parents watch it on a Mother's day, and even though neither of them cares for anime/animated media, the fact that my Dad did not fall asleep during it and liked it is a a big Thumbs Up. Just love it.

  • @x3mslayer
    @x3mslayer 3 года назад +501

    This movie is simply amazing, fricking amazing and underrated. Nothing like what watched before, it feels like I'm observing life of a single mother and some normal kids, but at the same time there's the supernatural element. The detail is amazing, the characters feel real. The central element that is family and love of a mother, is so touching I had to tear up watching it. Thank you for reacting to this. Possible the perfect anime movie, contending with "Your Name".

    • @RecoveringChristian
      @RecoveringChristian 3 года назад

      I disagree. I found the motivations lacking. The character arc of the brother meh, esp with Japanese/asian culture, the prospect of abandoning your widowed mother is pretty selfish. Strong beginning and middle and avg to below average ending.

    • @ManiacalBlueberry
      @ManiacalBlueberry 3 года назад +3

      @@RecoveringChristian Ehh, but at the same time, would the mother really want to hold her children back from their calling?

    • @RecoveringChristian
      @RecoveringChristian 3 года назад

      @@ManiacalBlueberry no, she's the selfless door mat type that gets taken advantage of. You expend all your time, energy and resources and love into something that eventually has little to no returns. If anything, the ending defines what a thankless job motherhood can be, oddly from a western perspective where it's expected that children should leave at 18/upon maturation.

    • @scaredstiff7176
      @scaredstiff7176 3 года назад +16

      @@RecoveringChristian Bruh, it just sounds like you have a problem with motherhood in general. I mean, motherhood is the journey, not the end result. Different people like motherhood for different reasons, and just because you don't find the idea of motherhood exciting, doesn't mean other people won't.
      And she isn't a selfless doormat, she fights for her kids and her place in the world. She fights against society (ie. people telling her to give up on moving to the country, her fighting society to keep her kids safe and healthy without them being science projects lol) and nature (her trying to teach her kids their wolf side without it being out of control, and her trying to live in nature). I'd say that's a lot of battles to try and fight.

    • @RecoveringChristian
      @RecoveringChristian 3 года назад

      @@scaredstiff7176 which makes the ending lackluster, oh ok just go do what you want kids...I'll just be over here left to my own devices. Also nice projection, this is a common perspective many parents have: wonderwoman super mom on the daily, but little to no recognition AKA a thankless job.

    I love when they first move to the country so much. It's so beautiful, the landscapes, music, colors, everything is gorgeous and peaceful but also feels real because of the struggles to fix up the house (which by the way is the most beautiful house I've ever seen and you can't change my mind). And the characters' personalities really start to show and just the artwork, character and background designs, and soundtracks are wonderful. That place in the country is exactly where I want to live. In the mountains far away from everyone in an older but still really beautiful and spacious house, my own garden, entire mountain forests to explore and run in, a beautiful creek, just everything about that place makes me want to jump through the screen and go there right now.

We saw him at the beginning and then boom, we never saw him again throughout the entire movie; that was it for him. He didn't know that Yuki and Ame are wolf kids, nor will he do. He probably died somewhere. And also, I liked how Hana is being her optimistic self and I always felt bad for her. Agreed. She is the epitome of a strong single mother and I admire her optimistic attitude. Tho it was probably exhausting. She didn’t have anyone to confide to. I doubt she did to her children. OH NO! This movie broke 12 year old me who was just getting into anime and looking up stuff on the internet. _I was traumatized_ the absolute _pain_ when the husband died and the some left ༼;´༎ຶ ۝ ༎ຶ༽. Was never the same again. Surprised I still kept watching anime after.

      As a young child who didn't know much about anime, I went from Black butler to Host Club to this, each time was very jarring.

    My Favorite anime is Made in Abyss. Simply due to how the anime actually can impact you physically. I hope you watch it (subbed) but please, don’t get too attached it’ll hurt.

    This film needs a *legacy sequel (set over 20 years after the original),* where a grown up Yuki and Ame both go on to raise their own child and how the paths they took influence how they raise them. The cousins end up crossing paths and through each other they learn about their other half that was kept hidden from them. The sequel should be told from the cousins point of view (particularly Yuki's child) to make the film stand-alone from the original.
    Mamoru Hosoda already did a sequel already, The Girl who Leapt Through Time (which was a stand-alone sequel to the original novel).

    weird that you started with Mamoru Hosoda's middle child. But since you already started... :P might as well marathon it from The Girl Who Leapt Through Time all the way to Mirai. :D
