A wild and windy day was forecast with temperatures dropping rapidly once the warm front had moved through. Not expected were the thunderstorms that rolled in later. I had initially planned on getting some shelter near the river in the lee of the cliffs but the caves were then only dry locations available as the storm rolled through... Another plan B was deployed ....

P.S. As mentioned in the vlog I placed foil under the woodburner (after initial filming) and took away what remained of the log and disposed of it later . The fire was off the ground and the woodburner was placed on solid ground (not on peat or any material that may burn after the event). All remnants left in the woodburner were also placed in the bag with the foil and removed.

Nice vid. The scariest night of my life was about 3.5 miles offshore in a thunder storm in a sea kayak. Lighting strikes all around, carbon paddle, carbon kevlar kayak, covered in salt water. 45 mins later I made it back to land. Fastest I have ever paddled.
The thought of that is scary enough, glad you made it back to tell the story fella.
I’m probably too old to survive an adventure like that now, but by Harry I enjoyed watching you take it on. Thank you, what a guy!✊🏻
That was quite scary. I don't know what would freak me out more lightning in the cave or walking back down over that rocky wet terrain in the dark! I'm glad you got down safe!
Got the chills when I thought I saw two eyes in the cave.....two dots of dust on my screen. There is no way I could sleep knowing that there's more cave behind me! Didn't know it was a whole cave complex. But it is beautiful. The cold is also trapped in the stone
Gary Johnson crikey - was getting worried (until I mentioned the dust spots!) glad I didn’t have any company of a paranormal variety !

I didn't know that about caves and lightning strikes....interesting.
Here in Canada we avoid caves in the winter....🐹🐹🐹
@@JoeZUGOOLA You minimize risks. Lightning will want to travel across any surface, which is why the cave is inherently more dangerous than being out in the open. But it's still better to be dry than to get soaking wet outside in a storm. There's no good time to be in a storm.
Thanks for sharing . I never knew that a cave was not safe in a thunderstorm , and I hadn’t seen this I would have always thought it would be safe .
I like your calm demeanor… and also the fact that you’re not afraid to admit that nature won that round. 👍
absolutely - nature 1 me -0 !!lol I don't mess around if things aren't looking too great weather wise. Not many people realise that there is an increased chance of lightening strike in a cave (especially at the entrance of the cave - hence my quick departure!!lol
Take care and thanks for watching

I just love how most of your videos come out naturally. Thanks Murray
I watched enough horror movies *coughs* The Descent *coughs* to know to stay away from the creepy-ass caves haha
Lol!!! True!! There are both good movies; The Descent
I am sorry you were cold ☺ but for me this video was a treat👍: the rain, the sounds, the caves, the lovely crackling of the fire...All beautiful and peaceful 😊 Thanks so much for posting it ☺

My claustrophobic level rose when you went deep in the cave
The car is the always safest place to be during a thunderstorm, not because of the wheels but because of a process (discovered by Michael Faraday) called Faradays cage. Basically the electricity just passes around you as it will always take the path of least resistance. Another great video, and another beautiful location. Luckily I've only been in dry weather!
Those bone caves have a special feel about them.
To think thousands of years ago.. Man, animals would have sheltered in those caves as you did!
Really enjoyed watching.

Great video Murray! I didn't know that about lightning and caves! Thank you! I'm glad you got down safely! Awaiting your next adventure!
I think that you are an amazing man, a real boyo ( I'm Welsh!). What an honest and beautiful video. Live long and prosper my friend x
Like many others, I wasn't aware that a cave wasn't the best place to be in a thunderstorm. In that area and those conditions it would have been the first place I'd have headed for!!! Every day is a school day, as they say!!! Love your channel. Good Luck!!!
Usually you check the floor of the cave and inspect the "ceiling". If there a rocks on the ground, especially if it looks they have fallen in recent times/years, you get out of there. If there is any signs on the "ceiling" of any loose or recently dropped rocks, you get out of there. Otherwise it might be safe enough to stay in. Might.
Gosh Murray some expedition that. Glad you were not too far away from the car. So glad you stayed safe.
Just goes to show how careful we need to be and respect the elements.
Alan Easter it certainly was Alan - was glad to get away for the thunder for sure !

Cool video, I actually live in the highlands, but when you see it on film it shows how much we take it for granted!! 👍🏻
When the pandemic has calmed down abit you should come over to florida I'm 14 and me and my freinds allways try find caves and we have found loads and my dad owns a hotel what I'm guessing you can stay at pay free 😊🇺🇸🇺🇸
@16:20 i tell you what, you might say " it took me back to my childhood......etc etc".......but....i think seeing that, it takes us back to our ancestors, sheltering in those caves, warmed by a small fire, light flickering of the jagged inner edges of the caves
Lightning gives me the fear while hiking. Was nearly at the top of Tinto Hill a few years ago when lightning struck at the top. I've never legged it down a hill so fast in my life. XD
Cracking video as always. Thanks for posting.
Ewan Goes Hiking like wise - been in the elements a few times when thunderstorms have been rolling about - not a good place to be - remember running off Beinn Ime in the Arrochar Alps about 20 years ago as the storm crashed in about me 💩

I must say that as South African, I am enjoying the sound of the rain, the views and the cave. Honestly though, here in South Africa, we wouldn't risk the cave without checking it thoroughly because of our wild life. Lastly, I am enjoying your accent.
I live my mountain days again through you until I can get there again. Absolutely awesome , Bypassed the caves when I climbed the munros, will return with 2 dogs and camp without a thunderstorm.
I didn't know a cave wasn't a safe place to be in a thunder storm, so I learnt something today.
Must have been so cool to camp in a cave like that! Awesome video and glad you're safe.
hikerekih it was all good until the thunder ! Actually a bit of a phaff - a grassy spot near the spring would’ve been nicer - the cave was a bit wet, muddy and a lot of very hard uneven ground (and not as much room as it looks ) to pitch ! However was nice to be out of the storm for a wee while :)

If those caves could tell their stories ! ..... The things you do for us Murray , really enjoyed this one - glad you got back safe . Here's to the next adventure . Thanks again.
Great video, also learnt something new today. Caves and lightning don’t mix.
Loved this Murray, brought back memories of a similar experience when I was younger, caught in a rain/snow storm on the Cuillin Ridge and escaped the weather by spending the night in a cave at the back of Sgurr Alasdair....coldest night of my life, I'd forgotten my sleeping bag and just had an old bivvy bag. First light and I abandoned my traverse of the ridge, I was just too cold and the weather hadn't improved much. Looking forward to your next adventure, thanks.
Love vids with rain, wind and thunder, great video. Love your accent reminded me of that famous comedian, young Billy Connelly, without the swearing, lol. First time subscriber as well. 👍👍
I can see an advantage to why bushcrafters are so fond of making a raised platform log bed. Insulation from cold ground and electrical currents ( assumming its dry).
I've been watching campings adventure and tiny house for weeks, i hope i could try it someday. Im definitely bringing my cozy blanket. Great video.
cozy blankets are definitely recommended :)

Everyone before you that ever stayed in that cave had a fire.
Yea this anti fire shit is retarded
Pretty sure I saw a massive sign on that trail too. We aren’t the brave northern people we once were

That was unlucky but the only sensible thing you could do. How the elements play such an important part in what we can do safely in the mountains.
When you first showed the JetBoil, my first thought was how noisy they are. Then I realized you hadn't lit it yet! Yeah, best to come down, I'd say. Great vid, thanks. 👍🙂

I might have been 100k years ago but our ancestors spent a storming night in that cave.
Nice one. Good decision to bail. That’s the difference between experienced adventurers and novices. The lightning striking a cave can also dislodge Any loose rocks above your heid. I’ve camped in a few. Always in bivvi bag. Lots of rain up there too. Forecast has been all over this year. Loved the photos of the firelight and tent. It’s all part of the memories and makes good viewing. Look forward to the rest. Atb mate.
Without knowing the track back, think I would have stayed, but no tent deeper in 2nd cave. My last adventure posted was in a cave too, has a different feel to tenting. Fires are very comforting both heat-wise and physiologically. “The brave may not live forever but the cautious do not live at all!” glad you made it.
Cracking video , you mad the best if the natural features in wild weather , thanks for posting
i clicked this video for the peace and beauty but those caves remind me of something 😂😂😂
Like your attitude. Knowledge combined with humility. And you seem to feel no need to appear tough or super-eager, unlike so many. Yeah chilll in the car till you feel like getting goin. It"s what we do. I bet it's what most people do, if we're honest. Let's face it we go into the wilds for our enjoyment, not for any other buggers. Love
I would have thought that you were in more danger of a lightning strike walking on a bare hillside in a thunder storm. All the best.
With my Italian surname and NYC accent you'd never know one of my grandmothers was of Scottish heritage. I'd love to visit the beautiful land of her, and my, ancestors someday. (And maybe even try some haggis!)

We were heading up Bidean Nam Bian from the hidden valley in winter. Were were just grouping on the bealach when my then hubby heard a hissing sound from his ice axe. We headed back down pretty sharpish as there was an electric storm just above us. We were just exiting the hidden valley when there was a terrific rumble of thunder. One of the guys had seen lightning travel across wet ground before and needless to say he was first off the hill

Back in the 1970's whilst in the RAF our team were in Glen Co and during the night another party arrived and because the camp areas were filled up they decided to go live in tents on a wee island but come morning , their wee island had shrunk due to the water flow off the hills and to me it was funny seeing three couples struggling to stay relatively dry and yet facing an uphill challenge of moving tents and equipment to drier ground. Yeah never trust the weather in Scotland to stay as expected! Cheers man and hae a guid new year wherever your travels take you.
