It's very important to check if the existing flywheel has magnets on the inside. Most e-start engine's do, most other engine's don't. Without magnets on the inside of the flywheel, the output of the coils will be close to zero amps.
Not regulator, rectifier. Rectifier changes ac voltages to dc voltage. I’m not sure ,it may have a regulator too, but without the rectifier it would not make dc voltage. Love your stuff and appreciate your knowledge. Have learned much, thanks.
Whenever you see a rapid pulsing of the headlight it is because they are being run directly off the charging coil on AC current. Once you install the rectifier/regulator, the pulsing should quit, since they are now being fed "clean" DC current and also seeing a constant voltage from the battery. While they may get slightly brighter from the slight voltage increase when revved from idle to RPM , they should not have the "strobe" effect that the un-filtered charge coil current provided.
@@motododo4626 Yes, you will need a new flywheel. When I upgraded from a HiSun 196 to the 224 I just swapped the flywheel over and it works great. If you don't have a flywheel to steal from another engine, monsterscooterparts has a 3-magnet flywheel for $27.49 that looks like it'll work.
ive caught that govonor spring almost broke my leg trying to hold the cart back while i pulled the plug wire off to kill it because i didnt have a kill wire hooked up yet. im finally getting around to doing this for my world record charity ride this summer testing has been flawless. however i only go about 800 yards round trip and the battery has an onboard charger so when its parked at home its constantly on a trickle charger. i suck at wiring so thank you for explaining it to where even i can understand it
Me Going Fast channel did a similar video showing all the wiring needed to the lights, this video answered questions about the Tillotson 👍👍. Looks like the flywheel is no different than that video.
I have a Coleman 196cc with two charging coils connected together with a brown and yellow. Is the yellow wire a ground, or a charging wire like the brown??
Nice video buddy! You got me thinking: if i got a TILLY 212 electric start, and opted off a battery all together... dont you think that one coil that comes stock would power a 7 inch LED light bar at 12V and 1.5A when running? I bet it would, and i really dont mind pull starting. Thanks again for the ideas.
Thank you my friend! This is exactly what I needed to see. Based on this, at 3amps I can charge a small battery. Any info from Tillotson what the minimum CCA should be for this type of motor?
I have a 16hp and it has a single coil , on a log splitter , and I need more charging , so I've bought the dual coils not hooked up yet , so with one stock coil there is no rectifier but two coils I will need one . Cheers .
What to do if you have after market parts to soup up the bike. I remember hearing that the “stock” flywheels could not handle the revs, but I still need to charge!
@Knight Recon late reply, but I just installed one of the electric start kits and I most certainly would not remove the governor using the replacement flywheel the kits come with. It's awful
Hey man thank you for this very informational video, i had a question, is there any other way to tighten the fly wheel to spec if you dont have a tie down tool or in this case a old 30 series cvt pulley to tie down.
When this is all wired up and working properly, what voltage should you be reading on your battery? For example on a car, your battery should be reading like 12.5ish volts while the car is off. When the car is running, the alternator takes that to about 14V. Should you see something similar on this setup? Would the voltage increase when at full throttle vs. idle? I am just trying to make sure my setup is connected properly. When running, I am seeing the same battery voltage as when off.
I am seeing the same thing. I put the Go kart on Jack Stands and at wide open throttle I see the battery slowly go up in voltage but only to around 12.8 to 12.9. At idle it seems to be the same voltage as when the Go kart was started.. I hope someone answers this question.
@@venomchris5818 it's because he used half wave coils with a full wave rectifier. This is a shit way to try this. You need the "charging coils" 2 wire coils and a full wave rectifier.
So if I have the charging coils where they are daisy chained together so I only have one wire coming from behind the flywheel do I only need a rectifier/regulator with 3 wires (coil wire, out put wire/ ground wire)?
I really don't mind if I continue using the pull start. However I'd like to do the headlight and then add front turn signals, rear turn signals, brakelight and tale light. Do you have any video on this?
I have a 420cc predator motor from harbor freight and I have a push start installed but I am having issues getting it started it's been sitting for a while but I have clean oil I have not checked the spark plugs I don't know if it could be something around my carburetor there's fuel in it though I just don't know what to do to get it started because it won't start it cranks but it won't start
Would I need the dual coil for a coleman ct200u. I want to add lights to it? Also, I have a bx200 that already has a light, where would I get a single coil to add to it?
I have a non electric start Predator. Where can I get a flywheel with magnets to convert it (along with coils and regulator) to have a charging system?
Nice video buddy! I have an odd one for ya: on a 4 wire rectifier off a mega moto 212 kit... I am seeing a DC voltage DROP as RPMs go higher?! I read 12AC+ on the meter coming off the two coil wires before the rectifier too. I'm thinking the rectifier is bad. Ever seen this before?
I also need help selecting the correct load resistor to stop pulsing on my bt200 with an led headlight. He did mention the coil puts out 1.5 amps so if I assume my regulator is putting out 12v with no battery it would be 12/1.5 so an 8ohm resistor . My question is do I need to check the voltage after voltage drop from the led to know for sure what resistor to use and is a battery even required or is the resistor not required with a battery.
Hey the link for the voltage regulator says it's for 150cc engines, will this work for 196? The regulator from go powersports for that engine only has 3 wires, 2 green and a red, can you explain?
I’m running a stage 2 kit I wonder if I can even do this now 🤦🏻♂️. Guess I’ll take the flywheel off when i get my muddskipper twister with the 11hp 212
I have 2 word coming out of Duramax xp7hp electric start. There is 2 wires coming out of the magneto. It's hooked up besides the one I didn't see when I rewired it. It's a black wire with a white strip any idea what it is?
Hey sir!I would like to install a charging system on honda gx160. The hole for a charging coil have not a thread. I will do them... and do you suggest me a kit flywheel and charging coil with a regulator/rectifier. Sorry fo my bad english! Thank you!
Get the propper tool and learn correct method, crimping will always be more reliable than soldering, when done properly particularly when there is vibration involved. Insulated crimps where invented for aviation. Yes, I have been properly trained and experienced in soldering too.
Will this work on a 420 predator and will it keep battery charged if I install lights, like tail light and head lights led. It’s for a golf cart project?
A question I have as I'm preparing to install charging coils / starter motor to my Honda powered pressure washer, isn't there a rectifier / regulator installed inside the key switch box? If not then I need to locate one to be wired into the box as I intend to mount one to my setup.
Hi I really liked your video I have a harbor freight predator 301 engine and I'm trying to find a electric starter kit for it . Do you know what might work based on your experience with small engines .I have seen the ones from ebay but I'm not sure what to get .
I was unlucky enough to ruin the threads on the crankshaft of a predator 212 by taking the flywheel off using the 13/16 nut to protect the threads like you did in this video. It seems like I was just unlucky but wanted to let people know it CAN happen. Maybe a defective and weak thread in my case, but the nut was not being hit aggressively at all. This is still the seemingly safest way to remove the flywheel that I have seen.
I need some help. Going to watch this, but my needs are a little different. I have a 15hp 420cc horizontal engine. Would like to set up a similar system that’ll charge a 12v deep cycle marine battery. Do you know roughly how many amp hours you could charge with in an hour? Is there a calculator. I don’t have an electric start, can I put one on?
Those coils are for a half wave rectifier. Won't charge at lower rpm. You need the actual charging coils not just a lighting coil. The charging coil has 2 wires out and produces higher ac voltage so when the rectifier steps down the voltage and converts it to DC you still get decent charging below 4k. Do it right next time.
Ya know I took apart my tilly 212 NON E start to remove governor but I did'nt look if flywheel had magnets... Do you know if stock flywheel will take a coil with stock flywheel?
Hey red beard!, quick question would this setup work on a predator 212cc? Looking to throw some lights on my go cart but Ive only seen people use the old fly wheels.. is it possible that a go power sports fly wheel would work? Would I have to put magnets on it?
Hey Alex did you end up using this set up for a predator 212? I am thinking of doing the same and I ordered a stage 2 kit for the 212 from GPS. I believe it does have magnets on it though
Hey I have a question, in the full suspension ct200 video where did you get that gas tank or what model Harley Davidson did it come from because every single gas tank that was on the engine broke off
I think I have a bad rectifier. Mine is wired the same as yours. I get 3 to 10 volts DC out but that's not enough to charge the battery. The voltage goes up with RPM but at a certain point it reverses and starts going down with more rpm.
Just curious. The new wire under the edge of that wire hold down. Because it's pinched and not ran through the loop will vibration over time wear into the wire and cause a short?
Can you show a video of you putting back the electric starter key switch stock back with the 12 volt regulator I would like to keep my original key switch and put a 12 V regulator going to add headlights need some help can you direct me to the right direction
I have a tecumseh engine, I would like to know if I can put something similar to it to put lights on my Go kart I would really appreciate it if you could help me

The regulator is actually a rectifier/regulator since it’s purpose is to convert AC input to DC output.
