When you said "the Ottomans and Hungary are equally matched in domination" I laughed out loud, because in History they fought and really was equal. They ended up with a peace deal and conquered the sh!t out of their other neighbors:D
That was until the death of Matthias, after which the Ottomans conquered most of Hungary, scoring a real life Golden Age.

@@fledbeast5783 "the next dude" was out of options. Matthias had no legal child, he wanted his "natural son" to succeed him, and buffed him up to havens, made all the land and fortune he could to his private property. The only thing, he couldn't inherited was his fathers ambition and political brilliance, so after Matthias died, he couldn't grab the Hungarian throne, but kept all his private property (more than half of Hungary).
The "next guy", Vladislav II. in order to take the throne, had to promise not to collect the historically high (and somewhat cruel) taxes of Matthias, the ones that's very purpose was the rather costly maintenance of the black army (a third of the annual income of the king). Without the money he couldn't maintain the army, but he couldn't become king if he would take the taxes. If he refused, the nobels would find a guy who wouldn't. So in my view, the barons and the nobels are to blame here, they didn't want a strong king, they wanted someone they could walk all over.

Another benefit of Hungary as domination is if you conquer a city that was a former city state, you get the opportunity to liberate it instead of taking it into your empire. This gives you automatic suzerainty at 3, 6 or 9 points depending on the stage in the game. Although you don't immediately get the army benefits (because there are none) you also get the boost to your second unit.

    Great upload. A few notes:
    1. I believe that the Foreign Ministry gives you +4 combat strength, and not +5.
    2. Hungary is great, but very situational(like many other civs). If you haven't met a few city states first, you would have hard time using your bonus(especially on Deity). And if you have a riverless land, then you can throw the other bonus away as well.
    3. And yes, the great thing is that you can upgrade a Horseman into Black Army and later into Hussar.
    4. You still have to build units, to avoid a situation, in which your levied army's time is done, and now you are left without units at all to defend your conquered land.(levying them right back could turn out to be super expensive, now that all the units are upgraded. So gather shitload of money)
    5. Yes, I believe it's a bug.

I could debate on Diplomatic Victory. I feel it should be an A or S. Buying envoys is very easy which gives you a ton of diplomatic favor that no one else gets. Also, depending on the city states out there, you can find yourself leaning towards the other victory types as well, giving them some versatility.

    • @TheSaxyGamer
      @TheSaxyGamer  5 лет назад +1

The issue with Hungary is that you now receive negative favor per turn for having high CO2 output (which you normally do in domination because units that consume resources output CO2) and for having excess grievances (which you almost certainly will have in domination), so those effects can cancel out the benefits that he gets.

@@TheSaxyGamer But you could levy units to get diplomatic favor and act in emergencies, but not play the domination game. Yes, it's be a rare thing to do, but you could and I'm willing to think it would be effective.

I was thinking the same thing, but in my latest playthrough I had more diplomatic favor than I knew what to do with. After securing your borders, you can turtle up and play the diplomatic game very well if situations go south. Plus you are getting tons of suzerain bonuses from a lot of city states. I levied ofen whether I needed to or not just to keep my envoys up. Couple that with one gold per envoy and that gold for levied troops are never felt. In reality, by mid game you should have most if not all city states as your puppet.

I think Matthias is really suited for any kind of victory, pearl of the danube is super useful and can get you to any victory really, if you manage to get some river cities. Other than that, obviously, they're better suited for domination, and surprisingly, they can easily get a diplomatic victory because of the suzerain bonuses. Though it's very tricky to get him into a good game, a lot of conditions have to be met and you have to have a decent skill at the game to reap the most benefits. For me it's a very tricky civ, I still don't really get the hang of it because it's very different from other civs I really enjoy like Phoenicia or Arabia. Plus the music is arguably one of the best.

Hey The Saxy Gamer how do you feel about Hungary vs The Ottomans? I saw your video about how awesome the Turks are at steamrolling and I believe it was before you did a leader spotlight of Matthias. I have preferred Hungary as the better Domination Civ. One big reason I believe that is how even their "weakness" (like you mentioned) on being reliant on being a suzerain to a city-state, still has a plus side to it in the mid to late game, when you consider that it opens Hungary up to emergencies that are diplomatically beneficial to them if say that city-state is attacked. This kinda lets you play sides at the least, or possibly give up warring and focus on any other avenue of victory that seems appropriate. Thanks for the vids!

The Saxy Gamer I was playing Hungary on single player and realized you can basically buy envoys. If you use Amani (the governor) levy the units, remove her from the city in oreder to lose suzeranity and put her back on the same turn (you can do that instantly) you'll be able to levy units again, and again until you no longer lose suzeranity from not having her on said city state.
I am not that well informed regarding this game, so I wanted to ask a pro: Can this be considered an exploit? I want to use it on multiplayer (if it isn't an exploit evidently) and play diplomacy with him.

A good trick ti Hungry is to work with the aggression vs city states, you can cut down on grievances MASSIVELY if you wait for the AI to declare on your city states, you can call protectorate wars, and lose most of the grievances causes by declaring and due to you getting 100 grievances from being suzerains, the AI will ignore most of the grievances generated from city occupations

    • @jyakulis1

Matthias is a good bit insane. I just got out of a turn 143 win on immortal. I tried it again to see if it really was that easy, and I spawn near the Spear of Fionn. Well, that won't make it any harder on me lol.
Id be absolutely terrified to play against this guy on multiplayer against anyone with half a brain. I can't say I see the AI ever get much going with him, though. Secret societies make him even somewhat more ridiculous. Now you have an Amani that much quicker. Scout spam early for city state finds...game over? Hamstring myself with only 6 city states?
I just had a few points about some of his good synergies. The adjacent to river production (Danube) is a great bonus for more commercial hubs, which is what you need quite a bit to get going and levy more city states. It will be interesting to see how the new River Goddess pantheon plays in a few days also. I got a religion this game with no district. I was very anti messing with religion at all with him, but he gets Ancient Era golden ages so often with suzerainities and outpost kills. The thing is monumentality isn't that good in the classical era so, what do you take when you have no infrastructure? I don't want to be purchasing builders. I want to be levying military in the classical era. I just have this massive army and this Prophet here. The army is just wondering when this weird dude showed up.
He's also really sweet in the sense that you pretty much want to just make horses. I mean in games I have made a few warrior or archers early to protect myself. But units like this just can't move fast enough with the levied armies. I pretty much leave my own infantry mostly on the defense. You really mostly need cavalry, which again just synergizes so well with his other bonuses. Now your army can move with the same speed as your insane city state super soldiers. So, rush animal husbandry and guarantee horses for your second (or first) city, and you are pretty well set up. Maybe you need a little bit of siege stuff. I'm not sure the AI can last long enough to get walls against him for that, though.
And just as a general bonus. He's nice in general early on because you can build quite a bit more monuments early helping you push to oligarchy since you can free yourself out of making units from production often.
Secret societies? I can't see how anything but Owls of Minerva works here. The vampire is fun and cool, but you don't need an insane production capital for units like you do for other civs. I guess maybe the vampire castles would be kind of cool on a larger map to be able to move around quicker so, I guess you can't say never.
Levied units also make great Volcano sacrifices. I think perhaps I will try for an Orszaghaz in this next one. I think I'd be able to then hold two capitals/kills and still generate diplo favor to sell the AI. I have had the same issue with you with the Thermal Bath so far. It sounds really nice on paper...maybe a little bit better in a longer game.

In my eyes, the Huszar is just slightly better Cavalry unit, but you'll rarely ever get the alliance bonus because if you're playing for the domination game (which you should with this civ), by the time you unlock the Huszar you should have run up your grievances really high. Best case scenario is you end up with Alexander and/or Gorgo in your game, who don't mind warmongers as much, and maybe someone with the Darwinist agenda, and hope you can get an alliance with them. Otherwise, the Huszar is just a cavalry unit with +3 strength.
