Civilization VI: Leader Spotlight - Dido

- Dido is the leader of Phoenicia in Civilization VI: Gathering Storm! She is an expansion-focused leader with some unique naval bonuses! I initially had very poor expectations for Dido, but I'm glad to say that she is a surprisingly fun Civ to play!

One strength I think is being able to build cities right next to enemy ones
I meant to write this on the original video, but the reason I think she gets the Eureka for writing is because she is a natural for island type maps.. Maps where you are more likely to not meet another civ for a long time and so miss the eureka completely. Unlike some other civs that are natural for Island maps, she doesnt get instant embarkation so she cant go exploring over the waves right away.. Hence her need for the eureka so she can get her campuses up quickly.. So situationally on these maps, this is a pretty powerful ability. (granted, on Pangaea or continents where you meet other civs quickly.. its not nearly as important.

No, it’s because the Phonecians were the first civilization that developed a written alphabet.
@@RenegadePharmD I get the historical reason for it.. but I am seeing it from a game balance side. I am guessing it was never the main part of their bonus.. just a realization that on island maps, Phoenicia would start to fall behind because she doesn't have a fast method to explore for other civs.. and so not get a chance at the Eureka.. so they added it in that she just gets it right off the bat.
No they made it specifically for history
if you play on deity, which I always do, they will find you before you research writing
@@RenegadePharmD NOT. just the progenitor for Latin script
Highly intelligent review as always Saxy! The move the capital strategy worked well for me in my first ever win on Diety.
I would’ve given Diplo a “B” as the Cothon/Harbour means lighthouses which means international trade routes which generally means better relationships with other civs. I had Diplo as my back up but won on science.
Best individual leader videos for Civ 6 on RUclips by 7 country miles!!!!
Thank you for all your efforts that to this day are the gift that keeps giving 🙏 🎷
Phoenicia deserves at least a B for Diplomatic, and here's why;
- Lots of money from Cothons + Additional trade routes mean you're going to have a lot of money to throw towards aide requests. You'll also be able to quickly and easily fufill quests from city-states that require building/purchasing units/districts/buildings.
- You're going to have cities on other continents, so it'll be easier for you to get your units where they need to go for military emergencies
- More trade routes means you can pop out specific wonders (Kilwa, Statue of Liberty) faster
So a pretty decent diplomatic civ imo!
In my two times playing as Phoenicia I got the culture victory, but then again I'm a culture victory type of guy, all I usually do is found my theatre squares and buy everyone elses great works with the surplus of gold I get from the cothons and trade routes. Other instances I accidently get the culture victory early while trying to go for a different victory type. So far Phoenicia is my favorite because like you said its very versatile in how you can play it since it doesn't have a direct playstyle.
One thing that would help an early sea attack rush (specifically the loyalty issue) is that there are a fair number of admirals that can be retired to boost loyalty (especially if you have the mausoleum). If you are going harbor-heavy, you WILL get a lot of admirals (the computer doesn't seem to prioritize them at all).
in general I would like to see changes to Great Admirals. every one I get is like "gain a pathetic amount of Gold. get more money from plundering naval trade routes." because the Harbor is such an important district in coastal cities, it's annoying that almost every one of them is a military bonus. not to mention that naval war is completely unimportant and I have yet to plunder a naval trade route.
You noticed the broken mechanic with policy cards. However I’m not sure if you realize just HOW broken the strategy is.
All you need to do is rush the wonder “Casa De Contración”. This provides another giant multiplier to your production. Combine this with the other “Colonial” type policy cards and your yields start skyrocketing. Currently the AI doesn’t prioritize this wonder so it’s easy to get every game.
I think Broyer did this strategy and now has them as a top 10 science civ. Personally I think they are a top 10 civ if played by the right person. It’s just a higher skill level required.
It doesnt work, i tried it. My original capital and first 7 cities were built on one continent and then i moved my cap to my 8th city on a new continent and it just buffed the new cap instead of all the cities on the old caps continent. Its stupid
@@ollydavis2495 It does work. But the CASA wonder will "lock in" the capital at the time it was built. So it's wise to move the capital BEFORE building this wonder. In this case, the bonuses from the wonder will apply to the cities that are not on the new capital's continents..which is what you want
I'm a simple guy. I see saxy gamer video. I watch.
I absolutely LOVED her in Civ 5!! She quickly became one of my favorite civs to play as since she could embark early and it made the islands map that much better.
*) Casa wonder + colonial taxes card + colonial offices card. (Move the capital BEFORE building the casa wonder, because it locks in the "foreign cities" at the time the wonder is built nd it will allocate the bonuses to them, fixed)
*) Cothon + Ancestral hall + colonization card + magnus with provision promotion --> insane expansion nd fast settlers
One Wonder for Phoenicia.
Step 1 Expand you empire on other continents.
Step 2 build the Casa de Contratacion
Step 3 Profit
Does Gov't Plaza/Casa have to be built on the continent BEFORE moving capital or AFTER moving capital?
@@nico80808 I don't think it should matter. Unless it's buggy, the bonuses to non-home continents should shift whenever you move your capital.
Had to comment about the "say-oh-wahns" @ 12:23
Korean is largely a phonetic language (so I don't feel bad commenting on the Phonecian's video!). "eo" makes the same sound in every word it appears in. So in Seowon, the "seo" sounds exactly the same as in "Seondeok", which I believe you pronounced correctly.
"wo" is like a w sound + the eo sound.
The "eo" sound isn't in English, but the easiest way to pronounce it is like the u in "sun". Suh-wun sounds closer than say-oh-wan.
It's not a big deal, and I'm not Korean myself, but I felt compelled to point it out since it wasn't just in the first video.
Civ really needs a pronunciation guide! haha
On a more relevant note, these are awesome videos, and thank you for uploading them! As a new player to civ, it's been overwhelming to digest all of the information, and I'd have a very difficult time if I tried to make sense of all the different bonuses between civs just by reading them. But I've been watching the whole playlist, and I feel much better prepared to play as or interact with any of the civs in the game now! (well, except for the last dozen or so that I haven't watched yet! =D )
The way it works is probably like this: I settling a city in different continent and switch the capitol to the city. since afterword you can settle city in this continent coast without worrying about loyalty issue you can spam settler to the continent and the consequence is that you can have a lot of city in the continent different from the original capitol Tyre and finally you can profit the colonies taxes policy.etc. It's not easy mission to accomplish in practical...
杰克 叔叔 production cost for transfer is high
I figured this was kind of Harold 2.0. I played Dido a couple of times already. whatever her set up, I could not go wrong. Harold seems to have gotten jipped in the game bias. When I set up a Harold game, he either gets poor production in everything, or the side the capital is on is a land locked inland sea (of that makes sense). The land mass goes from top to bottom of the map and all those ships the capitol makes never get to break out into the true ocean.
Been looking for this vid. You have no idea how nervous I was typing "saxy gamer dido" into the youtube search bar.
After a year I re-view this video again, and since then Dido has become my favorite leader in Civ 6. I think the feedback given here is really fair and accurate. Thank you for keeping up with the game and all the knowledge you provided over time !
You can also get *+150%* Production towards Settlers
I would say they deserve a B for Culture. The 3 main ways to get Culture Victories are Wonder based, Land Based, and Great Work based... To get a Wonder based one you need a Super City with a ton of production, To get Land Based ones you need to get a lot of land for Seaside and Mountain Resorts, maybe squeeze in a few National Parks. To get a Great Work based you need to get a ton of cities to get more Great Work slots...
Guess what? Spamming out a ton of Settlers, getting a ton of land, and getting a ton cities is what Dido specializes in! She can pretty much aggressively advance in both prongs of the Culture Victory
You could even use the fact that you probably have 2-3x more Trade Routes than every other Civ in the game and send them all out internally from a central city that specializes in building Wonders.
Mr. Saxy: I love your videos. Super informative, and you have a great voice. I have a small request: can you tell us what, if any, mods you use and why you would recommend them?
I'm pretty sure the bonus to districts from the government plaza is to offset the inevitable settler spam. If you build your government plaza in say, your capital, you can use that city to spam settlers and still be able to quickly pick up the districts you need.
Hello saxy. the strategy of changing the capital mentioned in the vedio is not working at all, at least not in that way. I did the experience, in the late game i had the casa de constracion and the policy card of colonies taxes. I did the project to change my capital to a different continent and the city in the same continent of original capital is not effect by these boosts. I though it was a bug or something, however when you look closely to the policy card it says different from the "original capitol" witch literature means the original capital Tyre. And I know this is disappointing. And even for the casa de constracion dosen't work like this.
I played her and was mostly just happy with settler spam and extra gold. In hindsight the capital switching might be better than I thought. Won a diplo vic with her.
Vic Ratlhead military for me. Island maps
The city spamming, all the harbors for GAs and the loyalty bonus probably make her great for dominating. Diplo seems geared for high production and gold civs. She pulled that off pretty well too.
i feel like diplomacy should be at least a b, because the sheer amount of money they gain can lend themselves well to getting dipomatic victory points through contests and other things.
Cheap setters directly lead to whatever yeilds you want
Bye Phoenicia.
In all seriousness tho they have the sexiest color scheme in the game. The violet & sky blue is gorgeous and is way more interesting than the red/yellow blue/white ones you see on most other civs
It is called Tyrian Purple. Actually something they have taken from history class.
Yeah Tyre was known for its dyes, aye? :3c
@@thefoxoflaurels3437 actually yes, made from shells. It was and still is one of the most expensive kind of dyes.
I totally agree. It's one sexy color combo!
I denounced any Civilizations for settling at nearby coastal areas because I warned them about the naval units, Water Parks, and Harbor districts, but they would never listen. Also, I completed Norwegian's unique agenda, but still, I don't make any friendship with other Civilizations especially Norway and prevent any Civilizations from building Colossus, Great Lighthouse, Venetian Arsenal, Panama Canal, Golden Gate Bridge, and Sydney Opera House Wonders. The Statue of Liberty Wonder is the worst for the AI, because I would've lose the Diplomatic Victory to the other Civilization.
I've yet to try Phoenicia yet but may do this weekend! Oh and Dido should get bonus points for being the most psycho female leader in this game its creepy but funny at times XD
Comparing Dido's abilities directly to the abilities of another leader doesn't make too much sense. The leaders are balanced as a whole, not on a per-ability basis. Some are going to have straight upgrades or downgrades from other people's abilities and that makes perfect sense from a game design perspective because you're playing the combination of all their abilities versus a combination of all your enemy's abilities.
While I agree starting with the Eureka is dubious (especially since it's so easy to get that Eureka: I would have given them the Eurekas for all five techs of that level myself), it's worth pointing out that starting with Pottery would give instant access to the Great Bath wonder.
I think you underestimate the efficiency of her other abilities. Being able to forward settle on almost any coast more efficiently than any other civ (even the maori don't get the 100% loyalty perk) is nothing to scoff at, especially given how fast the cothon pumps out settlers. I'm more upset about how costly the capital move project is.
Honestly, I've always found the continent map generation is awful in Civ 6, so the point that all foreign-continent based abilities are useless (it's usually a HUGE amount of work to start getting anything going on another continent, and very rarely worth the bonuses)
Just so everyone is clear. The loyalty thing only applies to cities you have founded; if you conquer a coastal city, it will not take effect.
Hey Saxy, I wish you would get more views because these are generally very helpful. I appreciate these videos and I hope you can continue to make them so I can further improve at this game.
They should have given her the tech to build harbors
Phonecia is given the writing eureka because they developed the oldest written alphabet in the world.
Ollie Zerafati and they probably made Mediterranean colonization skyrocket
She is awesome with science with capital switch with casa and policy cards. Spamming settler early is broken
I can’t wait for you to rate Maori’s godly yields.
Just finished my Deity win with them yesterday, they're gonna get some pretty good ratings haha
Is there a chance u redo the top 3 leader series in the future? since GS introduce more leader and all those new feature and gameplay, im pretty sure alot have change since then :)
Does the diplomatic square work with Phoenicia’s bonuses like the gov plaza?
I change the capital to a continent which has least of my cities then adopt the policy that gives cities not on your capital continent with extra gold and production.
It doesn’t work I tried
TheLowsofSolipsism it doesn’t work I have tried. The colonies taxes card said different from original capital which is a boomers
@@zhentongzhang7144 I believe that you need to slot in the policy cards after you move your capital, same goes for Casa de Contratacion (it needs to be built after you move your capital). I ran these things in the game I played and I'm fairly certain that they worked as intended, perhaps its a little buggy though.
@@TheSaxyGamer Ooh! Thanks for the reply. I guess it is a bug. Actually I slotted the policy cards before the accomplishment of project. I am thinking what i need is unslotting the policy card and re-slot it in the government. I need to try it . and also the casa de contratacion is indeed built before the capitol switch.
It seems that although the Cothon is quick to finish. The lighthouse, takes turns without chops. Strangely my science game with Dido is good. Ignore religion. Ot at least do not bother with the civics in a hurry? Domination seems to follow later? I like Phoenicia. Seems you do too?
If you choose dido on an islands gameplay, you can just hypertroll the other civs.
15:02 space farts first.
I think plays a bit similar to Rome but not nearly as good. Settler anywhere an everywhere. The changing capitals thing is way too expensive of a project in my opinion it costs as much as a wonder basically.
but you dont really have o change it that much. Its all about securing cities on a different continent and then placing your capital in an isolated city with policy cards
For domination just raze enemy cities and put your own in their place. Not that you really care about grievances in domination right?
Should I put a muhahahaha on my comment?
The Maori will be A tier because of their lack of good terrain. To settle.
Also is she a better Rome
The policy card play i find amusing because they are all things like colonialism, but you're doing it on your oldest cities on your original continent.
It's pronounced "fi-nish-a". You don't pronounce the word "phoenix" as "fonics". Seriously bugging me. Who do you think you are, Sean Bean reading for Firaxis?
Yes, I am Sean Bean in disguise and no one had figured it out until this day!
Do Matthias
I'd say at least a B in religion. Consider that you can also spam holy sites and that, with them being just about everywhere, spam missionaries and apostles at the right places.
no
Dido isn't good or bad rather interesting. Her ability is pretty scrupulous. Situationally awesome or MEH at the rest of the times. So your tone was appropriate to describe her.
SO AN AWESOME VIDEO AGAIN SAXY.
LOOKING FOR MORE. ;)
Yeah, but that makes her a B tier, not a C tier.
What England should have been.
England is amazing as is
@@BigPurpleCarrot Modern England is, but on release England was kinda trash... Now they get absurd Industrial revolution benefits
