great video! i love this thin soil method and i am slowly converting my tanks when i reset them this year one by one to the thin soil method. you're absolutely correct and great point of view about spending more time with family and enjoy watching the aquariums instead of setting up and tear down. can't wait for the next video!

What percentage of the time do you successfully set up new caridina tanks? I'm defining success as you get a healthy breeding colony within a few months of adding the shrimp, but please feel free to modify that description as you see fit. I've heard that even the very experienced breeders may only have about an 80% chance of success with their tanks, which is part of why breeders are constantly trying different methods of tank setup.

How long will such a thin layer of soil last? How can you tell that the reservoir is running out?

On one of my video I shared about this, 8 months is where I put a check point. However I don't use time as an indicator for change. If the condition of the tank doesn't do well in say 4 months I will reset. But at 8 months that is where I look at starting the reseting chain process because I will need to transfer shrimps to newly cycled tanks before I can reset.
That being said, I have 1 tank out of the hundreds of tank that has gone more than 12 months and still doing mighty fine with lots of babies.
I have done reset of a tank after it was reset because it didn't look like the soft water parameters like biofilm, microorganisms are present. So I reset it right after a reset.

What are your thoughts on using UGF boxes?

I have plenty of them in the beginning, doesn't work well with my work flow, too messy, cumbersome, and no added value to the shrimp.

lower the intensity of the light. During the first 2-3 weeks there is no need for any light to be litted. if needed because of plant, choose low light plants so you don't have to have high intensity light to increase algae formation.

@@anthonyd4388 on the new setup? i will wait till it's cycled than i do about 20% WC before i put shrimps in. For regular water changes, usually 5%. i keep bioload low, for those tanks with higher amount of load i'll change up to 20%. Selective breeding tanks with only 2 shrimps i'll change 5% at max.
