Ach aye yer doin a braw job mate , it looks fine n dandy , I did the same thing as you n wae the back scenes except I painted the sky in as I had a few big hills and a cutting a bit like the devils beeftub except no as steep lol . Like you I had mine in a bedroom . I’ve moved to a bigger bedroom for a new build as I had one of my Nairn’s come home 33yrs old she is so I gave her the layout room . I needed an excuse anyway for the wife to move lol . Best of luck my fellow Scot I shall watch yer progress with gusto .
Cheers Jim. Sounds like a good excuse to get into a bigger layout room to me. 👍 I'd thought about painting but my art skills would make it look like a 5 year old had done it. 😂 Thanks for watching and commenting. John.
Back scenes are evil... Seriously. Even with ones with self adhesive. I don't think anybody has a good way to do it. So that looks fantastic. Unless I hire an artist to do it for me it is what it is. Thank you for sharing everything.
Hi Stewart. Thanks for watching and commenting. Yeah, I've no idea how to get it totally smooth. Considering just using wallpaper paste for the next ones to see if it makes any difference. At the end of the day, if people are noticing a few bubbles in the backscene, I've either done a terrible job of everything else or they're just too picky! Lol. Cheers, John.
@@GreenhillJunction I think picky sometimes. Their layout will look beautiful, but they forget why they did it in the first place, to run trains. Great videos by the way.
And that's exactly it Stewart. I'm building the layout because I enjoy running and watching the trains. Sure it helps that there is nice scenery for it to run by, but the backscenes really just frame the whole thing, like a picture frame, and sometimes I wish I'd just painted them blue. Cheers, John.
@@GreenhillJunction I keep on looking at the tutorials of scratch builders and how they do clouds with white paint and sponges. And how they get the blue just right. Shall keep on watching and playing catch up with the videos
Hello John good effort with the backscenes, not the easiest job to master ,I have messed mine up in the past with wrinkles on the finished job ,and redid them when a friend of mine told me before putting the backscenes on first give the boards of either a coat of wallpaper paste or watered down pva and let completely dry then glue your backscenes on ,it did help when I did them again just a few tiny wrinkles not horrible like my first attempt, and you can of course put some sort of scenery to cover things ,ie trees ,bushes etc ,you could also get some cardboard and paste on some buildings ,houses etc and build some depth up in places where you want a more built up area ,gives a 3d effect ,have to say I liked how you built the boards and attached them to the baseboards with the brackets, atb Ray.
Hi Ray. I had watched some videos where the backboards are painted white first, I just didn't see why but maybe there is a reason for it. Could always try the PVA method, got plenty of it lying about. Cheers, John.
Hi Andy. Thanks very much. It will look better once I get scenery in. I want to try to add depth to it too so it doesn't just look like a photo on a board. I was just frustrated at no matter what I tried it still got wrinkles and bubbles. Cheers, John.
Hi John as always an informative video and I would say that from normal viewing distance the overall scene looks good. because you know the issues it will bug you but for us viewers it looks fine. I particularly like that shot at 28.15 and the closing shot. I had my own backscene battles mostly due to mine own fault of not getting them in place before joining the boards . The result is an usightly gap in one corner and obvious joins.!! We live and learn LOL Keep Safe ...............Cheers Kev
Hi Kev. I do like to inform people of how my bodges go. 😂😂It does look good from a distance and I purposely did the running shots close up to see how it looked. It was just frustrating that I followed the instructions but it still got bubbles. Still got the other half of the layout to do at some point so I'll maybe experiment with something else. Cheers, John.
Dave @ Cottesmore did an interesting video where he used double sided tape and the end you start , some PVa , then another strip of tape and so on finishinh with a strip of the double sided tape .
Ok. I'll check that out and see how he got on. Maybe I can do each board as an experiment with different techniques and see which one turns out the best.
Great looking layout John, love your two levels and you have managed to get so much in there. Hiw big us tge layout? Mind us about 9’x9’ and J don’t think I have utilized the boards as well as you have Charlie
Hi Charlie. The layout is approx 13ft by 8ft. Tbh I might've put a bit too much track in and it might compromise some of the scenery but I prefer having lots of trains running instead of looking at scenes. Took a while to plan it all in but there is over 85m of track down! Cheers, John.
Cheers Simon. I think it's a very difficult task to stick them down without creases and bubbles. Glad you liked how I did it, sometimes my bodges work out! Cheers, John.
Hi Steve. I was going with the manufacturers guidance as I'd never done it before. I've still got half the backscenes to do once I get to that part of the layout so I'll maybe try that. Thanks for the advice. Cheers, John.
Good video
Cheers. Thanks for watching and commenting. John.

The back scenes look fine. You can hide the joints and wrinkles with scenics and trees etc. Its all looking good atb Andy

I do like the way you do your backscene, mine turned out terrible, too many creases/bubbles.

It suspect that you should have used photographic spray mount adhesive
