Hi Graham for what it's worth I made most of the same mistakes with mine. I also managed to rip it trying to get rid of the bubbles in the sky. I ended up putting strategically placed pictures of hot air balloons on it to hide the rips. As they say "the man that never made a mistake never made anything".
Ok the mistake you made is as you thought paint the wall then the paper leave to go off for about 10 min then apply to the wall ,buy a wall paper brush and comb .

That is so true I damaged mine I think I'm going to have some strategic rock faces lol
great video on putting up gauge master backscenes. I was looking at purchasing some of the backscenes for my layout.
