  • For months I've been telling you that the ID Backscenes printed backdrop I ordered back in January was on the way and finally it appeared in the mail. So in this video I'll show you how easy it is to apply these vinyl backdrops using the adhesive backing they come with. I was really impressed with how easy it was and also how it suddenly transformed the layout.
    These photo backdrops are available in both 15” and 9” tall versions and are made in the UK but in the US can be purchased on eBay under ID Backscenes. I ordered mine from Hattons.com in the UK and usually receive stuff in about 2 weeks. Other major UK hobby shops such as Rails of Sheffield also sell them.

    Good job Larry, I was biting my nails wishing it all to line up the way you wanted. I turned out very well. Thank you.

      I actually have to go back and pull part off and reapply it as some puckers popped up this winter when we turned on the heat. I will just hit it with a hairdryer and it will peel back then I can apply some spray adhesive and get it laid flat again. This vinyl stuff is not supposed to do that but………are you in the UK?

    Really excellent Larry, achieved under the Pressure of being filmed too and with all the Ingredients for something to go wrong. The Landscape looks a wee bit like somewhere on Dartmoor. Thank you for your Presentation.

      Yes, the left end reminded me of the hills behind the station at Buckfastleigh. I just wish the right end looked more like the left, a bit greener than I expected from the photos on Hattons website but I plan to go over it with a thin overspray from my airbrush to dull it down a bit. There also are a few vehicles in that section that date the photos to the modern era-good thing I know how to use the airbrush!

    Great video Larry. I'm awful with wallpaper so I was afraid to try a back drop. After watching you coast through this with such a great step by step explanation, I'm going to try it. You Sir are a True Craftsman.

    The backdrop looks good and you did a great job installing it. I'm glad I had a chance to see this installed, I have been concidering using some for my new layout. However I will not be able to work on a flat area as you have been able to do, so I think I will pass on this method and just paint. Again, great job and thanks for the video

    You Sir, are a Brave Man. I wouldn't even think about attempting that without three people. But I am extremely clumsy. I wonder about the simple use of a cloth, versus a tool like a J-roller, and how much pressure needing to be applied. I suppose I am looking at it from the perspective of applying a plastic laminate to plywood, which requires far more pressure.
    Great backdrop. Reminds me of East Strasburg, Pennsylvania, looking North from the depot towards the valley and the far hills. Very nice.

    • @TheDCCGuy
      @TheDCCGuy  3 года назад +1

      It was a lot easier than I had expected. It only takes light pressure for it to adhere and the company suggests using a soft cloth to press it down. I ended up without any air bubbles or creases at all.

      I thought I said in the video they are available on eBay under ID Backscenes but that may have been clipped in the editing process. Most large hobby dealers in the UK offer them as well. I ordered mine from Hattons.com . They also have versions of the Rocky Mtns, the Alps, and generic trees, etc.

    Maybe a silly question - but when you trimmed the excess half inch or so off the top - why not just fold it over on the top edge of the masonite, and then to the back side of it?

    • @TheDCCGuy
      @TheDCCGuy  3 года назад +5

      With a flap like that folded over and only about 1/4” excess after the fold is more likely to get snagged and rip. Also the backside of tempered hardboard has a rough texture that the adhesive is less likely to adhere to. Better to give it a nice clean cut edge at the top.

    Great work Larry. How many backdrop pieces in total, and are they designed to be continuous? The 2 smaller pieces you cut blend so well in the backdrop scenery, so just wondering if that is just the start of the same backdrop or if the right hand side (and left hand side) are each 2 continuous pieces. Sorry if I missed that.
    Thanks

    • @TheDCCGuy
      @TheDCCGuy  3 года назад +2

      There are 4 pieces each 4’11” long forming a continuous scene. The company also males some that have 3 sections so must add up to almost 30’. I plan to do some light airbrushing to blend them where the colors are slight lighter on the older portion.
