I was the 700 like
I think this pastel piece came out beautifully, I love the color palette, and it’s such a soothing piece. I also love how much it transformed from the sketch to the final piece, you just went for it.
You can spray fixative on it to keep it from becoming a finger print disaster. Or spray it with hairspray if you are felling cheap, but any craft store cells fixatives, they are usually in the painting section.
Hairspray is a quick fix but it tends to to yellow overtime.
I used mr. super clear since I had some from other hobbies. I dont know how well that works on paper though.
@@cc-bm8sz Oh my gosh using MSC on that sounds crazy! I mean it's a primer...but she already has a rough surface to hold onto the pastels...there has to be a need for something to protect it

“Once you've finished your work, if you need to protect it from being smudged, use Fixative Spray that is made for specifically this purpose. Hairspray will also work in a pinch. Only do this once you're finished though - since it will make it near impossible to add more chalk once it's done.” I knew hairspray would work bcuz I have a huge chalk drawing that was given to me by an art teacher. One of her students used hairspray to seal their creation.
spr1teakiss there is also workable fixative...which is made so as though you can choose to rework on it later
I found out that these eyeshadow applicators are wonderful for pastels and graphite. I always have a few cheap ones at home.
Just a general tip of advice for everyone.

For the most part, I love the sound of art supplies like pencils making scratchy noises, but for some weird reason these were like "skincrawl" scratchy. 😣😆

I ask cause i always struggle with coming up with my own thing to draw so drawing with her feels impossible for me lol
Grace Carnal Most of the time, I’ve already got a drawing in progress (it takes me really long to finish anything). But to me, Rin is so inspiring, there’s always some part of her artwork that gives me a new idea or motivates me to practice something specific. In this case, it’s colourful skies in gouache, which I’ve never done before. And colour schemes. But also the idea of a character blending in with the sky, I’d love to try that with my own interpretation :)

I just absolutely love when artists have that “Ah-Ha!” moment with an art supply or overcome any kind of problem they’re facing with art. Creative problem-solving is so satisfying ☺️

I would imagine this being a fantasy species ❤️ they could be called sky giants, they could be halfway/fully invisible creatures that are only visible at certain times or when they want to be seen, they could walk the skies and clouds like land and stuff, I think it’s a cool idea 🤷♀️
I always "seal" it with hairspray 😅 tho I'm sure there are professional things you can buy to properly seal them
Fixative for graphite works! Winsor & newton has it. (Expensive option)
Same I always use hairspray, but since it's not like an actual professional fixing spray like the Winsor and newton one, always test it on a different paper with the same medium scribbled on it before you use it on your finished piece. The hair spray can mess with whatever you drew with sometimes and make it have a weird texture so always test it first lol. I speak from experience >~
You should try another dimension in the art world,

Hi there is a product called “Fixative” that seals pastel and chalk artworks. There is a final and a workable. Good stuff!

You can use hairspray to seal it ^^ also there is a spray that's made specifically for sealing those kinds of things, it also makes it so that you can add layers

there are sprays for sealing pastel works but i can't remember what they're called? i seal mine with hair spray and it works pretty well!
They are called stray fixities and you can get a can of it for only a couple bucks :) but hairspray works too in a pinch!

Each time you draw something, I think: there's no way she could draw something more awesome and beautiful. But each time you surprise me 💞💞💞😘
I believe if you spray it with any kind of hairspray it will keep it. I do that with my charcoal drawings. You spray it about a foot away with light even coats, wait for it to dry then spray it again. I spray it about four times to coat the art piece. It's not a garentee but it's less likely to smudge, or get the pigment s everywhere, and if you lay wax paper over it it will protect it as well. Love your art work Rin!!!!

Soft pastels are my favourite (that and charcoal) and I was nearly vibrating with happiness when you started realising how much better a good paper makes it all look and behave! Those skies you made were soooo lovely~
The dark clouds at the bottom kinda look like mountains in shadows and the peachy space between them kinda looks like a river glowing in dawn light! I LOVE IT SO MUCH

I just want to say that you inspired me to start drawing again. For some wierd reason when I was little I thought that the only art style that I would be "recognized" for was realism. It was probably because all of my friends did something similar to that. Because I was so bad at it I stoped drawing completly untill a year ago when I found your channel and got inspired to draw. Long story short you inspired me to draw again and I just want to say thank you. If you do see this sorry for the long comment.

Try hair spray, (like what you'd use on charcoal drawings) that might keep it from smudging a little.
I know Rin doesn't like pastels (i dont either) but this turned out *REALLY PRETTY!* I *LOVED* the idea too!

Part of me is loving how nicely the pastels blend/fade out, and the other part is cringing at the sandpaper/chalk sound 😖

It’s not that bad
When I was like 8 I went to this special, afternoot art school and on the first lesson we had to draw a still-life of fruit etc but from our imagination (to practise composition) and we used pastels for it. My teachers praised mine to high heavens for the composition, saying I was talented etc, and all was fine. Then the teacher's assistant was tasked with sealing every student's piece with fixative before we could take them home, which would have been fine, but the next time I saw that drawing it had a giant yellow hand-print right in the middle, left by the assistant before she sealed it. This still haunts me to this day
And yes, you can use some kinda fixative on pastels to make them not smudge (though IDK if there's a specific type that should be used for pastels ;;)
Your final piece is amazing, but the thing I love about your videos is your process, I was having 'art block' at the beginning of the year and watching you definitely helped me to be less rigid, to let your your rough sketches flow into each other until you draw the final piece... and not to forget to have fun with it...

Chalk pastels are one of my favorite mediums. They blend so easily and you can layer the heck out of them (on the right surface)
i think it's so inspiring that despite pastels being your arch nemesis and dreaded art supply, you keep working with them when they come up, genuinely getting new ideas for working with them and learning how to get them to work for/with you. actually make an art piece with the materials.
whereas with other artists, i've seen them upload an unboxing...they see a supply they don't like and proceed to do nothing with it or just do random stuff with it, more or less destroying/wasting the supply while saying quite negative things. which is really sad.
i like that you keep your positivity, even though frustrated at some moments, you don't give up and find something good.

I belive that they're chalk pastels
Soft pastels are far less 'goeey' then oil. They are made from a soft chalk based with Kaolin. 💜
