Yeah my Dad was an engineer and, after he retired, he took an interest in drawing. He did technical drawing at school WAY back in the 1930's/1940's, but never had a chance to do real "art". I guess he kept a lid on it for his first 65 years because, the second he retired, he came to me (I was then around 19 or 20) and asked me if I wanted to go with him to a local art class, running twice a week for 4 weeks, just around the corner from us at a local college. I didn't, but I agreed anyway, just to spend time with him. He was like a kid again, he couldn't wait to get started. When we turned up, it was literally 15 old people (60+) and ME, and this young hippy style lass with a nose piercing. She was attractive, so that was one reason for me to keep going in! But my Dad, he had prepared and been out and bought himself some art stuff - and it was ALL from the pound shop. The lowest quality, sratchy, scrapy pencil crayons - terrible brushes - poster paint style watercolours, cheap paper etc! He wasn't having much luck in the class, despite trying his best. So I took in some of my own stash - 160gsm cartridge pads, some old Derwent artists crayons, my Derwent pans. He had a lot more fun then. But he'd still, from time to time for years after that class ended, come home from town with a bag full of art supplies he'd "gotten cheap from the discount store" and give them to me! I'd smile, say thanks - and put them in the chest with the others! XD
Same, these kits are awful and in general make kids feel like they are just terrible at art in general. I made sure as an adult to only give kids the real deal. I would rather give them a 12 pack of Polychromos or Prismas and some decent paper than waste money on those kits.
The fact that you still made some really incredible art with these supplies proves that when it comes to art, skill determines the quality over supplies.
This kit is aimed at kids - toddlers! My daughter loved these kits when she was a toddler. She did not care that the paint was flakey or that the the wax crayons were waxy. As for the pens, she would leave the lids off within a hour of opening the new pack. So as a parent, the price and quality is perfect for a toddler. As my daughter got older, I have gradually spent more money on better quality supplies for her. But absolutely agree about the size of the paper sheets!! Crazy!!

Same. I thought the similar set was really expensive and fancy so I rather used my old art stuff than tried the ones in the set. And now I have thrown the art set to trash long time ago but I still have some other crayons and colored pencils from my childhood that still works fine.
As a mother of a 9 year old (commenting Jan 16, 2024) I can tell you artistically leaning kids like mine will draw on *anything* they can get their hands on! 🤣They will draw on good paper, bad paper, small paper, big paper even if they don't have the fine motor skills. My kid has loved drawing since he was very tiny. His aunt introduced him to it and he would have happily drawn on that from a his toddler years up to now. 💜

I actually look at these super fondly because I wasn’t always as into art; I got into art when I was hospitalized for a long while as a little girl and my mom brought me one of these to keep myself occupied since I tended to like art class. I ended up spending the time drawing things for my doctors and nurses, physical therapists, etc. It was a highlight in a dark time.
I love these. Not for the supplies inside (they're... unbearable.) But for the case! They're actually nice for turning into a portable lapdesk and you can add little USB gooseneck lights and stuff.
I have one of these I got for $5 from Michaels! I genuinely adore it. Hear me out... I have prismacolors, I have alcohol markers.... But these just make me smile.
Hey Rae. I remember, back in 2016/7, when I found your channel. I remember watching a bunch of videos back to back, and really liking how much passion you had talking about art stuff. I was studying at University at the time, in an illustration degree, and sometimes at 2am when I was still working on a brief with just a week left of the deadline, I'd make a coffee and chill out for 30 minutes watching your videos. Now you have almost TWO MILLION subscribers! That's INSANE! XD I'm so glad for you! My youngest daughter is now 10 years old and, over the years, whenever I bought myself a new set of Derwent or Faber Castell pencil crayons (or whatever), I'd always make her a pencil roll of my spares / old pencil crayons. She has a lot of talent, and loves to draw. I wonder sometimes if the teachers notice that her pencil case at school holds around £200 of pencils / blenders / putty erasers! XD XD Keep going. Great videos, as always.
I made a custom set for my kids from a zippered binder and supplies I bought. More expensive but it’s way better. Always tried to stay away from those cheap kits. I love your videos 😊
This review made me laugh a lot. As an "art-child" growing up this was the only gift any grown up ever thought to give me. how I would dread those wrapped slim rectangular boxs. Core memories unlocked haha
These kits are the main reason I thought I hated watercolor. XD Although the grainy effect (Not the powdery effect, I think that's binder) you get is probably just granulation, some pigment granulates a lot more than others, but even expensive ones will. Some artists actually look for highly granulating pigments!
Yes, you’re so right, the filler is what makes them so chalky. These aren’t watercolours, looks like poster paint to me. I love granulating watercolours but that is a crappy set of “watercolours” . Those are the kind of paints that made me hate watercolours in school. 🤪 Now I love to paint!
I wonder if my bullies in seventh grade who made fun of me and called me “Crayola“ for trying to make small talk about how much I preferred the brand are watching this video as adults and think of me and realize how right I was! (I’m 38 next month, this stuff stays with you)
I love how the item count for the kit neglected to mention all of the repeat colors. As a kid, I knew the supplies would be trash, but the nicer kits (like from costco or something) would come in lovely wood briefcase style boxes, and I wanted the fancy box more than the weird pastels and dry markers inside lol. Now I am an adult and have fun organizing my supplies however I want.
I had this exact kit as a kid! My aunt gave it to me for a birthday and the crayons were underwhelming. The markers were quite horrible, and everything was just.. Horrible. Good thing I'm safe in the hands of proper supplies nowadays.
i remember loving this kit when i got it cause i was more of a quantity over quality type of girlie when i was younger lol, BUT i remember instantly hating it cause the markers were so dry and squeaky + i hated watercolors as a kid (little me didnt know watercolor paper existed)
Supplies like that were the reason I hated art with a burning passion until I found RUclipsrs like you. I didn't discover my ❤ for art until my late 30's! I'll be eternally grateful for your content for teaching ne how to find quality supplies on a budget. I recreated this kit for my neice & was able to buy her quality supplies for a few dollars more than price of that kit. It was my goal to get her as many things as that kit included & I'm really proud of what I was able to get her by assembling the kit myself. I would love to have a nice wooden briefcase to keep all of my supplies in though. Maybe a affordable, quality art brand will get on that.
They had a bunch of these on sale at Walmart here for 2.00 each.......they were trying to get rid of them. I bought 6 of them, tossed out all of the contents, sanded the container, painted it in several different colors, personalized each one with their names and refilled the boxes with all types of good quality art supplies for my grandchildren. My goal was to make art FUN for them ...NOT to frustrate them!😂I don't believe in buying cheap art supplies anyway for anyone, children or adult. The fear of toxic ingredients alone keeps me away from crappy supplies. Needless to say, they loved them. I changed the latches of the boxes also to make it stronger. It was a fun project too!
As a kid I loved drawing on small paper. And I loved these cheap.kits I also didn't know better and my experience with them did give me the knowledge of all the bad things cheap supply and when I got better supplys I was so impressed
So... In terms of supplies I didn't expect much, but I'm quite intrigued by the little box. They're ridiculously expensive trying to get wooden or similar boxes for supplies here!
I think this is why a lot of kids don’t think they are good at art. I never felt good at art. And, now, as an adult, I wonder if I just had bad supplies.
To be honest I am a pre teen right now (11) And I love art! This kind of looks like the same one I got for 2022 Christmas from my auntie and I loved it!
I had multiple of these as a kid and oh gosh I remember hating it so much but I felt guilty because the adults who gifted them to me were so nice I didn’t want to disappoint them so I’d force myself to use it anyways lol
8:48 The chalky layer on top is what happens when the watercolour itself is poorly mixed, the dye soaks into the paper and the cheap base stays on top, once the water evaporates, it turns into a dry powder.
As a child I think that it is important on how good the supplies are because I consider myself an artist and a decent one. If I had to use these I could deal with it but it just shows how people don't care about the product and the person who uses it as long as they get money, so I wouldn't waste my money on things that don't even work well. So yeah STOP MAKING CRAP PEOPLE 😭! also love your vids Rae your art is inspiring and amazing I hope I could be as good as you when I'm older! ❤
I got one of these kits when i was a child. I'm guessing that the quality has went down. But they weren't that bad. Maybe the paper. My kit lasted up mid highschool. I had art classes so I used it up fast. The only thing that was meh was the watercolor (they were super chalky) and like Rae's reasons is the crayons. I had markers and oil pastels too. It wasn't too bad.
I had gotten one of these cheaper art kits and the one I bought had paint, marker, charcoal, pencil crayon, blending stumps, a posing doll to use as a reference, oil pastels, chalk, watercolor pencils and markers, and I believe some paper. It was only 40 dollars or so, but was such a good find, as all the materials were really good quality. I don't think it's available anymore, though :(
I feel like when companies put out super low quality art kits like this they are doing such a disservice. It makes kids frustrated. I know I was frustrated for many years. Then I found the art community on RUclips and learned about better quality supplies. I'm not as good as Rae here, but creating art is definitely a more enjoyable experience when I don't have to fight with my supplies!
😂 that look at 10:41 took me out! Spoke volumes. I was hoping you'd shove the box off the table while yelling GARBAGE! LOL! Cuz that's what I did. I got suckered into that same "kit" now it's in a landfill somewhere.

I hate art 101 I got the jumbo kit and it was so bad. The markers bleed through the paper and it’s poorly made and no care are actually put into the product they sell. The crayons don’t really even show up on the paper, and the paint just is either too pigmented or it’s not pigmented
i got this same kit when i was 8, and i fully agree with everything you say. The same things happened to me, the neon yellow, the chunky crayons, the goofy ahh paper, everything!!! not to mention the markers…constant pain. My pink marker also broke and at the time this was devastating to me. THE WATERCOLOR!!! the watercolor was okay for me but i scratched my paintings too much and my little painting bin was full of chunk :(
I want to say something to the water color: I live in Germany and these water colors are a staple of school art class and every student is familiar with them. In Germany, gouache would be called water color as well, because here it really is just a category of water based paint. What everyone calls watercolor (so the one that seeps into the paper and is very watery and stuff) would be called "Aquarell" here. But of course these in the art box are shit quality and there really are better ones that do behave kind of in the middle of watercolors and gouache :)
Don't you have poster paints as well? They are even more guachey I think, more opaque than the chalky "watercolors", even though they were actually less chalky.
Same like here in Hungary, watercolor has 2 types: 1. Student quality (vízfesték=waterpaint) it contains more binder less pigment => cheaper 2. Artist quality (akvarell=aquarelle, watercolor) more pigment less binder => more expensive, also we have gouache but I think we call it tempera.
Yeah, we have a lot of water-based/soluble paints here in the US but the only paints considered "watercolors" in the art schools and universities are aquarelles. Gouache is still kind of niche in the US and not easy to find in a local store. Like if you go to a random dollar store in the US, you'll find a watercolor set, and maybe a set of acrylics, but not gouache. In elementary schools, most art classes use non-toxic paints like (egg-free)tempera which teachers can buy in bulk as a dry powder and mix with water as need or buy in giant bottles pre-mixed.
This is honestly so relatable. When I was younger I had one almost identical to the one in the video. The markers ran out of ink so quickly and the crayons weren’t that good.
GIRL, the second I saw the brand she picked up I was like NOOOOOOO because I have tested out supplies previously by that brand and it was baaaadd...so I knew what I was about to see.
8:14 BRUHHH this brush tip got a serious case of Scoliosis 😭💀 Also I think the kit box is supposed be painted on possibly leading to the reason why the papers were super miniature cuz it looks like part of the design to paint on the box but idk
I love these wooden art boxes and buy them whenever they are on sale and cost under 10$ - just for the wooden case. All the contents are given away to the kids in my neighborhood who paint and draw outside in the summer - if something goes missing, is forgotten or lost, it does not matter.
As a kid I have always wanted those. They seemed soooo fancy but my mum wasn't willing to spend that much on it (coz I have 2 siblings who'd want the same) so she'd always buy the discounter markers and pencils etc. I am glad she did that coz those were reeeeeally good. :D
I think while price may be the main selling point, convenience is another factor to consider since everything comes in one nice case. However, if you gathered every supply on your own, you’d get higher quality products at the same or lower price.
when i was 5 or 6 years old my father noticed my intrest in art so he superised me with this kit and as a kid i was the happiest child alive at that moment
I used to get these from my family members all the time when i was little bc i draw a lot. I always used the small papers as swatches or like a color testers before you use them on your actual paper.
My parents used to get me art supplies like this, but it was a lot better quality. It was oil pastels, 5 different types of paint, charcoal, chalk, a sketch book, it had a bunch of nice art supplies like metal sharpener, brushes, etc. AND I remember it came in this nice thick wooden pack. Lol. I had it for years
Thank you for calling out substandard art supplies made and sold everywhere! It's as if the manufacturers actively hate children trying to develop their art. Poor tools and experience making creating good art even harder (I've had drawings that turned out fine, but I hated anyways, because I was fighting the materials the entire time!). What is truly heartbreaking is that countless of us as kids were so grateful to get a big art kit like this, from (possibly non-artist) indulging parents who either didn't know the materials were shoddy, or simply couldn't afford better. Could you imagine if in school sports or performance art, if the kids' pointe-shoes or their athletic cups suddenly broke while in use-- you'd get effing mad, wouldn't you? Our children deserve better.
Ok I can't be the only one who noticed that Rae isn't using her own caution paint cup 😂 Time stamp- 8:58 And also she is so amazing even using the horrible art supplies she created a good drawing!
To be fair! A lot of the dirt-cheap "for kids" watercolors are just chemical dyes with a water soluble filler like clay or chalk (which is what makes them act more like a gouche instead of a real watercolor). She was probably worried that if it was dye-based that it would stain her mug.
Mine was way bigger and had a pull up thingy with drawing paper but still didn’t have watercolor but I never used them as a kid because i was a stoopid child folks and I had no idea those were paints.
To be fair, I know as a kid I begged my parents for one cause it looked so cool with all those different supplies 😅 so if they had gotten it for me it wouldn’t have been their fault. We just went to the dollar store though, they had watercolors, colored pencils, felt tip markers, actual Crayola crayons, almost all the same stuff :) though I don’t think you could get the pastels they sometimes included at a dollar store
xD Every complaint you had about the "watercolors" brought back VISCERAL sense memories. All I could do was laugh and nod. I thought I hated watercolor for most of my life because of this shit, and then I decided to get an actual GOOD watercolor palette as an adult on a whim and found out I actually really love it!
7:21 that same thing happened to m the ink wasn’t so I pressed harder on the marker and poof unusuble And we also had both reds break first, very ironic
I remember having this kind of set as a kid that I feel like a true artist. Good times. Even though they are sht, I am grateful for these set for jumpstarting my passion for art.
i LOVED these as a kid because there was just so many options all in one case!! however, as i got older and got one for like my 11, 12, or 13th birthdays it wasn’t as magical anymore lol, def a great cheap option for little kids but for sure NOT my favorite art supply now

It was a highlight in a dark time.
i love the way rae never is rude about a bad product
I love that she risked her phone for an ad😭
Seeing the piece of art that Rae produced: "Oooh! Yummy strawberry!!" 🍓
Then seeing Rae's face: "Oh. Rae isn't happy."
Ikr
Yeah, I can’t even draw it
@hesmybabyflx lol
@@Cordenbluemy name is charlotte so your name is complete. (My dad made this acc and I didn’t change it.)
Funny thing I got one for a Christmas when I was little and the markers were the second best the worst was the water color
Okay but that strawberry is still gorgeous, you're art is always amazing
Ikr!
I was like "Why is she pissed? She still made a beautiful art!" LOL Although when she showed her previous strawberry picture I was like "Ohhhh."
It looks like a story book 💕
I love these. Not for the supplies inside (they're... unbearable.) But for the case! They're actually nice for turning into a portable lapdesk and you can add little USB gooseneck lights and stuff.
i'm using one right now with my cooling pad and laptop on it, on the couch
I was eyeing up the case as well, it does look pretty solid.
Yeah sometimes I actually keep the case
I had the Crayola brand version of one of these when I was little, and everything in it was actually pretty good quality.
XD XD
Keep going. Great videos, as always.
This is so sweet 🥰
Amazing mom/ dad located
I made a custom set for my kids from a zippered binder and supplies I bought. More expensive but it’s way better. Always tried to stay away from those cheap kits. I love your videos 😊
i doubt it was much more expensive than this

@@tinadahlgren7781 Same! I have Winsor and Newton watercolors now and they are amazing!
@@JasmineZellmer So do I slowly changing my cotmans into professionals as they run out.
I've found the neon yellow problem to be common in cheap colored pencils (either that or yellow that's basically invisible)
or pink looking like magenta🤡
How hard it is to find the correct basic yellow pigment? They were so close to having a decent supply.
@@mintstarmari Yellow is the hardest base color pigment to produce/apply, even with expensive mediums imo
@@dannydanny2789 Oh. I didn't know.
It actually explains so much about the cheap yellow pencils. Does this apply to crayons, markers and paint too?
I wonder if my bullies in seventh grade who made fun of me and called me “Crayola“ for trying to make small talk about how much I preferred the brand are watching this video as adults and think of me and realize how right I was!
(I’m 38 next month, this stuff stays with you)
You were right then and you’re right now!
well, happy birthday as i see its now the next month
It never ceases to amaze me how artists can create amazing works of art out of the worst materials.
This review is mandatory viewing for anyone who will buy art supplies as a present for anyone, ever.
I used these when I was young those tiny sketches were literally a nightmare. Thanks for making this video Rae love you girls ❤🎉
Sketches refer to markers
Rae: *shows image*
My step sis colouring with that kit next to me: 👁💧👄💧👁
i remember loving this kit when i got it cause i was more of a quantity over quality type of girlie when i was younger lol, BUT i remember instantly hating it cause the markers were so dry and squeaky + i hated watercolors as a kid (little me didnt know watercolor paper existed)
What this proves is that I can’t blame the supplies anymore for my drawings cuz her drawing was still amazing with the bad supplies 😂
What do you mean?
Rae even with bad art supplies she always makes everything look good!
Ime the same(ish) age and i have cared about the supplies since i was 8 😅😅
I had multiple of these as a kid and oh gosh I remember hating it so much but I felt guilty because the adults who gifted them to me were so nice I didn’t want to disappoint them so I’d force myself to use it anyways lol
You can make ANYTHING turn into a beautiful masterpiece!!
And also make me laugh! ❤
8:48 The chalky layer on top is what happens when the watercolour itself is poorly mixed, the dye soaks into the paper and the cheap base stays on top, once the water evaporates, it turns into a dry powder.
i remember when i got one of the art kits. none of the pens worked, and the crayons disintegrated. but i was like 8 so its fine i loved it so muchhh
I know these are trashy... but the major nostalgic it holds is unbelivable!!!
IKR, reminds me of my childhood🥲
That fact that she was able to create something that half of us couldn’t with trashy art supply’s 😢😢😢
I couldn't do that with Gucci or any other high-end brand that I can't remember now.
i could create a semi realistic cat with bad graphite pencil
Awwww Rae was using Moriah’s brush at 7:16 !
1:03 I don't know if you know but Casetify has been accused of stealing case designs
I also had this living hell of an art supply!

Whenever Rae makes a Video where she draws a Strawberry to test the Artsupplies, i cant stoo but think "Haha.... a Strawber-rae" and giggle to myself
That's funny 😂

(not trying to be rude)
This is honestly so relatable. When I was younger I had one almost identical to the one in the video. The markers ran out of ink so quickly and the crayons weren’t that good.
Rae: This is the worst art supplies I've ever used!
Also her: *creates a masterpiece with it*
GIRL, the second I saw the brand she picked up I was like NOOOOOOO because I have tested out supplies previously by that brand and it was baaaadd...so I knew what I was about to see.
8:14 BRUHHH this brush tip got a serious case of Scoliosis 😭💀
Also I think the kit box is supposed be painted on possibly leading to the reason why the papers were super miniature cuz it looks like part of the design to paint on the box but idk
as someone who has mild scoliosis, we pass this on to the random kids who chew up crayons
I love these wooden art boxes and buy them whenever they are on sale and cost under 10$ - just for the wooden case. All the contents are given away to the kids in my neighborhood who paint and draw outside in the summer - if something goes missing, is forgotten or lost, it does not matter.
The adding water to the marker .... i learn new things everyday and its always when i dont need it anymore
the one with markers paint crayons and paper my parents got it for me the markers get super dry easily
As a kid I have always wanted those. They seemed soooo fancy but my mum wasn't willing to spend that much on it (coz I have 2 siblings who'd want the same) so she'd always buy the discounter markers and pencils etc. I am glad she did that coz those were reeeeeally good. :D
Thank you so much Rae. I used to think I was horrible at art even though I had good supplies. You taught me so much!
I always used the small papers as swatches or like a color testers before you use them on your actual paper.
you have inspired me to pick up my brushes after years of abandonment. love your videos and all the art tricks and supplies you share !!

@Starie135 im sorry I don't mean to offend u but why to u even watch her vids if she "Yaps too much"-_-
My parents used to get me art supplies like this, but it was a lot better quality. It was oil pastels, 5 different types of paint, charcoal, chalk, a sketch book, it had a bunch of nice art supplies like metal sharpener, brushes, etc. AND I remember it came in this nice thick wooden pack. Lol. I had it for years
That is so nice!
Ok I can't be the only one who noticed that Rae isn't using her own caution paint cup 😂 Time stamp- 8:58
And also she is so amazing even using the horrible art supplies she created a good drawing!
To be fair! A lot of the dirt-cheap "for kids" watercolors are just chemical dyes with a water soluble filler like clay or chalk (which is what makes them act more like a gouche instead of a real watercolor). She was probably worried that if it was dye-based that it would stain her mug.
@@xena91388 ohh thanks for explaining
Mine was way bigger and had a pull up thingy with drawing paper but still didn’t have watercolor but I never used them as a kid because i was a stoopid child folks and I had no idea those were paints.
Rae can make anything beautiful 😻
To be fair, I know as a kid I begged my parents for one cause it looked so cool with all those different supplies 😅 so if they had gotten it for me it wouldn’t have been their fault. We just went to the dollar store though, they had watercolors, colored pencils, felt tip markers, actual Crayola crayons, almost all the same stuff :) though I don’t think you could get the pastels they sometimes included at a dollar store
Me!! Always wanted one but the whole family refused to get me one
I'm always so shocked to see Rae making stunning art with cheap, expensive, bad, and good art supplies. Amazing! 🤩👏
xD Every complaint you had about the "watercolors" brought back VISCERAL sense memories. All I could do was laugh and nod. I thought I hated watercolor for most of my life because of this shit, and then I decided to get an actual GOOD watercolor palette as an adult on a whim and found out I actually really love it!
I’ve had this exact same kit and boy does it bring back memories
One of the most relatable videos tbh
7:21 that same thing happened to m the ink wasn’t so I pressed harder on the marker and poof unusuble
And we also had both reds break first, very ironic
I remember having this kind of set as a kid that I feel like a true artist. Good times.
Even though they are sht, I am grateful for these set for jumpstarting my passion for art.
Wow. The result looks absolutely miraculous to me. I have no idea how you were able to achieve such beautiful results.
im genuinely shocked like she made a drawing that beautiful with supplies made for kids (which aint good) so like wow way to go Rae
That art supply only cost 2-3 dollars in where i live because everyone knows its trash and no one buys it except for cheap gifts for kids
I just started to watch her randomly and now I love her videos ❤❤❤
now that you've tried this, I'm curious how trying the Crayola brand version of this art kit would go! maybe there could be a part two? ❤👀
i LOVED these as a kid because there was just so many options all in one case!! however, as i got older and got one for like my 11, 12, or 13th birthdays it wasn’t as magical anymore lol, def a great cheap option for little kids but for sure NOT my favorite art supply now
That was like a trip down memory lane. I remember weird streaks in watercolour and crayons. For years I thought that’s how it’s supposed to look like and didn’t wanna do any art 😢😅
I HAD THIS AS A KID PLZ- 😭i remember being so disappointed when the “oil pastels” were just crayons with a different skin ☠️
When you rub your hands on the watercolors after they dry you can get your hands all colorful like you would with chalk
I can’t even draw a half decent eye, I don’t buy art supplies, but yet these videos are so entertaining 😂😅❤
