Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Mary Jane's Last Dance - 1994 09 08

  • Video awards live performance from NYC's Radio City Music Hall.
This song is one of the 90's biggest success for the band but wasn't included in any album. It was a single for the greatest hits CD from 1993.
Part of intro is missing (and i hate that) nonetheless is the best rip i've seen.

Stan Lynch the original Heartbreakers drummer featured here has such a beautiful feel. This is probably one of his last appearances with Tom Petty and his laidback groove is incredible. Just like Ringo or Charlie Watts he just played exactly what was required for the song, no more, no less.

She grew up in an Indiana town
Had a good lookin' mama who never was around
But she grew up tall and she grew up right
With them Indiana boys on an Indiana night
Well, she moved down here at the age of eighteen
She blew the boys away, it was more than they'd seen
I was introduced and we both started groovin'
She said, "I dig you, baby, but I got to keep movin' on, keep movin' on"
    Last dance with Mary Jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin' in and I'm tired of this town again
Well, I don't know but I've been told
You never slow down, you never grow old
I'm tired of screwing up, tired of goin' down
Tired of myself, tired of this town
Oh, my, my, oh, hell yes
Honey, put on that party dress
Buy me a drink, sing me a song
Take me as I come 'cause I can't stay long
    Last dance with Mary Jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin' in and I'm tired of this town again
There's pigeons down on Market Square
    She's standin' in her underwear
Lookin' down from a hotel room
The nightfall will be comin' soon
Oh, my, my, oh, hell yes
You've got to put on that party dress
It was too cold to cry when I woke up alone
I hit the last number, I walked to the road
    Last dance with Mary Jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin' in and I'm tired of this town again

They improved on the original version, here in this live version. And they don't seem to have done it this way again. I agree that it's so great to see Stan performing it live, in one of his final appearances with the band. He's so good on the studio and live versions, and frankly throughout his entire time with the band.
Steve Ferrone was a very precise drummer, very talented, played whatever he was asked to play. But the band lacked Stan's creativity and "feel" for the song, once he was gone (he was out of the band before their 1995 tour, so this was near the very end after 18-19 years).

Intro was by Rosanne Barr (sounding like Minnie Mouse). The band was never as good once drummer Stan Lynch departed, which was a few months after this performance.
Replacement drummer Steve Ferrone didn't have the "feel" for these songs that Stan had, played too heavy and too mechanically, never even had considered himself a rock and roll drummer anyway (at least before joining Petty & The Heartbreakers).

      --------/----7^(7)7p-5--
      --------------------7-
Middle strings BGD string with b on top in my diagram
It willl be too hard to tab here sorry just listen and play around with that Am pent. That’s just the very very first bar of the like main part ur probably thinking of where the 2nd guitar comes in (on the record) for the long solo/outro thing

She grew up in an Indiana town
Had a good lookin' mama who never was around
But she grew up tall and she grew up right
With them Indiana boys on an Indiana night
Well, she moved down here at the age of eighteen
She blew the boys away, it was more than they'd seen
I was introduced and we both started groovin'
She said, "I dig you, baby, but I got to keep movin' on, keep movin' on"
    Last dance with Mary Jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin' in and I'm tired of this town again
Well, I don't know but I've been told
You never slow down, you never grow old
I'm tired of screwing up, tired of goin' down
Tired of myself, tired of this town
Oh, my, my, oh, hell yes
Honey, put on that party dress
Buy me a drink, sing me a song
Take me as I come 'cause I can't stay long
    Last dance with Mary Jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin' in and I'm tired of this town again
There's pigeons down on Market Square
    She's standin' in her underwear
Lookin' down from a hotel room
The nightfall will be comin' soon
Oh, my, my, oh, hell yes
You've got to put on that party dress
It was too cold to cry when I woke up alone
I hit the last number, I walked to the road
    Last dance with Mary Jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin' in and I'm tired of this town again
