  • What if Superman used his powers for evil instead of good? Brightburn introduces us to an alien child who upon discovering his otherwordly powers takes a turn for the worst. Does this genius concept for a horror film deliver or is it Kryptonite to our expectations?

This is a badass movie! I loved the kills, special effects, characters and or course Jackson A Dunn as brightburn.
My only little nitpick is it should've been longer. I hope we get the trilogy there talking about. 10/10.

Brandon switched because of what was in the spaceship, he spoke in a ancient alien language and figured it out. If good aliens can switch on dormant genes or kundalini energy in us, then the fictional side can be to flick on the genes of this kid. It's like an awakening. Also, he learnt to lie and manipulate since discovering the spaceship. I believe he wanted to do good until his mother betrayed him as his father did. The "sorry" word ticked him off.

I just came back from the theatre and personally I loved the movie and it's definitely bluray worthy for me. But It probably could have used like 20 to 30 minutes extra screentime to flesh out the characters and like Cody said, give more background info on Brandon and his motivations etc.

Usually im with you almost 100 percent of the time, but i do disagree with you on the character development of Brandon. He explained his purpose through analogy within 10 min of the movie. In the classroom when he gave his explanation of the Wasp species, thats all ill say for those who have not seen it, thats why he was there if you remember. It was an awesome explanation and telling us what to expect there. Also, this movie was shot on such a minuscule budget it would almost be unbelievable to hear the pitch and then what you plan to make it with financially. I want to say it was between 7 to 8 million. Not saying it was perfect and that i didnt want to see more, but i absolutely loved this movie. Always look forward to your videos. Keep em coming and thank you for the work you put forward.

Finally watched this movie. I really enjoyed it. I sort of disagree about your take on Brandon’s character. You can definitely still see some good in him when it comes to people he cares about. He would’ve never killed his mom or dad if they didn’t try to kill him first. He also tried to give his aunt and uncle a chance to not tell his parents or the sheriff so you could see that he still wasn’t 100% evil. He still somewhat cared about those close to him until they crossed him. Love your content though man. Keep up the awesome work. My favorite horror/review channel

  • @Aqwtiny
    @Aqwtiny 5 лет назад +5

I think he was worried about the sheriff cause at that part of the movie he’s still trying to be lowkey, like he was still trying to make everything an accident, by the end it was no holds barred after what happen with the father, I think that completely made him ballistic

From what I've heard Brandon decodes a message from the ship that brought him to Earth that says "Take the world" and he interprets that as "Take over the world." And the reason he has such a thing for bugs is because he was a brood parasite sent to Earth by his race. So basically despite how well his adopted parents brought him up he couldn't escape his true nature and purpose. Plus having the power he did probably made him think he could do what he wanted since he stalks Caitlyn, is obsessed with her and thinks that because he fancies her she's obligated to feel the same way.

  • @regeice
    @regeice 5 лет назад +1

His switch from normal kid to pyscho path was too ridiculous. He was like cool, I have super powers, alright who's getting murdered first? I mean I couldn't get a read on this kid either. Was he sent to earth to destroy it, regardless of his own will? Or was he just a nutcase that just happened to go the opposite route of Superman?

I watched it on Amazon Prime and I loved it! I wished I seen it on the big screen back in 2019, I had a feeling it was going to be good. Yes I would watch it again. It's more of a horror than a comic book hero in my opinion. It's different and that is a good thing. Creepy in places. A very entertaining movie, not a dull moment in sight.

I love that poster at 20 seconds in. Haven't seen it before. I'd REALLY like to see this made into a comic. I think it'd be a clever idea to make a comic about the events immediately following the movie and then in a few years when they make the sequel they can start it "5 years later". That way the next movie could focus on Brandon at the peak of his powers/ maybe finding the other villains referenced in the credits/ starting a full on offensive against the planet Earth but let the comics tell the story of him growing into the ultimate super villain.
The story in comic form would be better for his "development years" because it's easier to convey what's going on in his mind in a comic and that way the film sequel can tell the more action filled part of the story when he starts attacking the world powers on a larger, deadlier, all out apocalypse scale.

I am glad that it was at least done right and done in a serious horror format and did not add forced comedy did not add forced good endings if the writers and directors did not initially want it. This would have been the best version of Batman versus Superman based on the premonition you mentioned. But if they could've gotten that warehouse fight scene fitted somewhere in the movie that would have still been awesome so this movie plus the Batman Warehouse fight scene would have been awesome. Plus, I never thought Batman was scary, I always thought Superman was scary and this is exactly the reason why, his abilities. Bruce Wayne saying, he could burn the whole place down and nobody could do a damn thing to stop him. This is exactly what this movie shows.

Not all kills have to be stomach churning, but creative and it was creepy and suspenseful and that is what is a horror movie should be to me. I was eating pizza during this movie so I am glad I was not put off. I just want to be entertained. Hostel it's not but why should it? Hostel and a Serbian movie don't scare me but these are disgusting and gross with a desperation to shock, not my kind of thing. Bright burn goes for creativity and the kills are more better than Child's Play remake in my opinion despite I love Child's Play 2019.

    Theatrical Review @bobsbaldheadsreviews
    Brightburn
Here is the question Brightburn asks; what if Superman landed on earth and didn’t believe in truth, justice and the American way? Elisabeth Banks and David Denman star as the Kent…. Um errr the Breyer family, desperately trying to start a family. One night an alien space craft crash lands on their farm and they discover it has a little boy inside… Clark…. I mean Brandon. Fast forward- Brandon quickly grows up to the age of 12 and begins to realize he is “special”. Unfortunately, some strange force calls him to not use his powers for good. Brightburn’s premise is a good one in a very small package and I give it points for trying something different. I’m not sure what I expected from this film, but it felt like something was missing. Beyond the gory detail the film takes with our Hero’s wrath against humanity there really isn’t much more to sink into. If you have seen the trailer, you basically have seen the movie and about halfway through the second act it becomes a straight slasher flick. Banks and Denman do a good job as parents dealing with and basically trying not to believe their “son” can be doing these awful things but in the very quick run time things settle fast in an underwhelming finale. This film is worth a rental and based on the Rotten Tomatoes Score of 57% and only a 7.8 million dollar take over this weekend, you may be able to see it very soon.
    Final Verdict:
2 out of 4 Bald Heads (Decent)

I love this movie but my big plot hole problem is with Erica's death and Caitlyn. Brandon goes into Caitlyn's room and tells her he's going to "fix" the situation with her mother and then an hour later her mother's "being alive" problem is fixed...she's killed, thats what im getting at. If i remember right, after Erica's murder one of the cops says she can only get 2 words out of Caitlyn. I'm assuming those two words are "Brandon Breyer" so how is that the cops don't so much as look into Brandon until they find two vague symbols at the murder scenes that, by some miracle, they recognize as "BB" instead an 8 or just a random symbol AND assume BB refers to Brandon. Maybe theres nobody else with those initials in the town?
It seems like Caitlyn would tell the cops that Brandon said he was going to do something to her mom right before she died and the cops would have enough common sense to know that's no coincidence. They get a warrant, search Brandon's room, find the notebook covered in the BB symbol and drawings of the murder that are so detailed they show her eye wound and the freezer door being burned in half which is information he couldn't possibly know without being there. This would probably lead to Brandon's arrest and, judging by his actions later in the movie, his reaction to being arrested would probably involve jaw detachment, laser beaming people through the head, and making someone straight up explode by flying into them at incredible speeds.
I know just about every movie requires a few leaps of faith for the sake of storytelling but they really set this one up and then immediately forgot about it. Like I said though, I love this movie and can't wait for sequels

If this movie came out now in 2023 it would get so much more praise just so happen to come out in peak MCU time… sure the story needed a bit of tweaking but pretty entertaining

i’m not sure if you’ve done this on your channel already but if not, you should think about possibly ranking the horror icons in your opinion from your least favorite to favorite!

I agree with the review, the movie is good but there is stuff they didn't take advantage. As you mentioned, they really needed to make Brandon more sympathetic because it's nonsense that "oh, the spaceship is telling me I need to be evil...sounds good!" They seem to forget that what makes a villain it's his/her backstory be tragic, showing that humanity is cruel and give a reason to make them hate the human race, they are insects to him, it's cliche but you do want the bullies to show up to torment this kid and realizing he has super powers he takes down 1 by one
Same goes with one of the plots like have the girl he's attractive to show some sympathy o be horrified on what he did to her mother, i think they didn't want to show him kill a pre-teen girl but still, the plot with her didn't go further.
A missed opportunity in this is that we don't see him punch someone! He uses laser eyes which is cool but imagine if he had punched someone, he could've ripped his head off or torn part of the body while the person is agonizing.
Finally, the final could've worked if they had a ton of cops or the entire army and i will spoil it a bit but i feel the fate of Elizabeth Banks character was dull, it could've worked if she was the only one that she believes Brandon has some good inside, showing Brandon that he still has some humanity in him until someone shots and kills his mom, losing that tiny bit of hope it's gone because his mom's dead and so it's Brandon which it only left is Brightburn.

Agreed. It's enjoyable, but wicked undercooked. It's all premise, and no real compelling story. Lots of potential, given bare minimum attention. Visually good, cast was fine, horror was effective, but it was squandered of any greatness.

Being fair, with the overabundance of Horror PG-13 movies than seem to be released year after year, R rated violence seems to be a rarity now a days. Yeah, Lee's review talked me into seeing. In some ways, might have walked into it knowing less than you, Cody. I never heard of it until the Drumdum review, and turned off Lee's video before spoilers, watched the rest afterwards.

Months later I finally watched this movie. I enjoyed it and it seems they are hinting at evil versions of Justice League members without using their names. Lol Michael Rooker said so. Lol I think it’s an interesting concept, but I’m not sympathetic with this kid and if there was Sequel, I might not see immediately because he would feel more like a plot device or concept. It is interesting, and some of those kills were gnarly. But then again I’m not a huge horror or gore fan.

5:40 I disagree, for one he came to the fact pretty quick that he was evil, and it was kinda a interesting flip since it's usually the father whose oblivious, and the mother who has to talk some since
I think the simple story works well for this film
While it is obviously influenced by the hero stuff, they dont need to copy a complex story like the actual superman or something like that, this movie to me is like good takeout on an afternoon, it'll fill you up and keep you satisfied
8:00 well when he killed that one charecter who was related to that one charecter, they left the surviving one in massive despair and sorrow so he probably didnt have to do much else

This movie is a darker, cynical take on the Superman mythos. Likewise, Watchmen (2009) was a darker cynical spin on superheroes. One of the main Watchmen images was a smiley face. Brightburn features a smiley face painting In the Breyer's family home.
Brandon Breyer's name follows the classic comic-book convention of superheroes with alliterative first and last names, such as Clark Kent, Peter Parker, Bruce Banner, etc.
The mask Brandon wears seems partially inspired by wasps. An early classroom scene he talks about how certain wasps place their young in a separate hive, getting others to feed them. This is a clear parallel to his situation.
The 'info' description given for the movie on cable of "An alien boy uses his supernatural abilities to exact revenge on bullies at school" is inaccurate. The only other student he hurts is the girl whose hand he breaks for being weirded out by him.
In many scenes, Brandon wears combinations of blue, red and yellow, the main colors in Superman's traditional outfit
Elizabeth Banks and David Denman both appeared in Power Rangers (2017).
In class, when describing wasps, Brandon says that wasps are more aggressive than bees, work in groups to attack, and that one species forces other insects to raise its young. This becomes a clear analogy of Brandon's alien species of origin, as they left him to be raised by human parents and later instruct him to dominate his surroundings.
Superman traditionally stands for "truth, justice and the American way". The essay Caitlyn is writing when she's visited by Brandon is "The Decline of Truth and Justice in the Modern World"
The scene where Tori tries to stab Brandon at the end right after telling him she loves him, holding the knife behind her back and then attacking as they are hugging, is very similar to the scene in Carrie (1976) when Margaret stabs Carrie at the end.
