Everyone can agree Octavia spencer was amazing but the movie itself was incredibly underwhelming.
What felt weird for me was as if Ma had no past whatsoever up until the story started. Like as if she appeared out of nowhere.
I would buy if she was 25 but 40 something? All the parents acted like they have never seen her for 20 years while living in a tiny ass town.
I get it, the lead girl and her mom moved back but what about the others? What did Ma do, hide herself for 20 years? Never ran to each other in that liquor store? Why did she wait all these years?
The event that triggered it all was just because she was there at the liquor store when the kids were too? None of that made sense at all. It just didn’t feel realistic to me.
I was rooting for ma. I felt for her when they explained how she was traumatized when she was young. As someone who was also bullied I understand a lot of her actions, not all but alot

@NeverMindGaming I like them as well but it DOES mean something as it means an allows for a level of depth in 16 minutes that you do NOT have in 2 or 4 mins.... fandom is easily seen an understandable is the clear point in that scenario.

I honestly knew nothing about this film except that it was a horror/thriller starring Octavia Spencer when my brother took me to see it. I was entertained and enjoyed it to a certain degree, but I was told after watching that basically the whole movie was spoiled in the trailer which didn't surprise me one bit. I can totally see where you're coming from Cody.
Great review, Cody! I'm totally with you on your criticisms of the script. There are so many half-baked ideas crammed into this movie and very few of them get the exploration or resolution they needed. I agree that this feels more like an early draft than the script of a completed film. Octavia Spencer was great at least!

Completely underwhelmed with the movie, and too drawn out for how little “torture” there was. Ma’s daughter was a character that pulled me in. The actress who played her daughter did very well drawing in sympathy.
I was afraid this was going to be the way the reviews were going to go for this movie. Going to see Brightburn tomorrow night, I can't wait!!! Gotta recommendation for you Cody, "The Perfection" on Netflix was very cool and Lee McCoy liked it and reviewed it even.
I love this review so much, I'm glad u warned me aboutt his film, I am a huge horror film guy as well, the fact that this film was made so lazily hurt me, I love horror, am excited for the new "Collector" film and Child's Play. 🙂

I surprisingly enjoyed this movie....I'm a horror nut especially for the slow burn, psychological kind, but this one was a fun movie to watch. Had its flaws of course but I enjoyed some of the twists and storyline. I didnt see any trailer in full for the movie so it was all fresh for me :)
Octavia Spencer was the nurse in Halloween 2 who got the shit stab out of her in the dream hospital sequence

Nice wrap up... one of my issues is the question of the church girl... do they show her surviving after getting hit on head by iron? I can't recall her fleeing when they're rescued. If she's not shown, why didn't they help save her, at least her body if she was dead from the hit. Hmmm 🤔🤔🤔 Thoughts?
To be honest I completely forgot about her. She felt thrown in for a joke in the end she had no place in that climax

It's hard to believe Octavia felt compelled to even do this movie because it seems so simple. It doesn't seem like something a woman of her caliber would be attracted to.

I agree the script wasn’t good and there were questionable decisions. There were multiple times throughout the movie where they should have called the cops, but if that would’ve happened we wouldn’t have a movie so I just kinda of forget about that. I also cringed at the party scenes with the music that just didn’t fit and looked nothing like a high school party imo. But Octavia Spencer was amazing and there were multiple moments where I genuinely felt uncomfortable. Therefore I liked it and will probably watch again when it comes out. I think it’ll age well

I feel like I'm the only one who liked this movie 😅. I did think "just call the police" too but then thought about some things that happened when I was a teen where maybe I should have called them but remembered how much pressure and anxiety I'd get for even thinking about it so I didn't. So I can kind of see her POV for not calling, cause even in a bad situation you don't want your friends and pretty much everyone else hating you because you took away party city 😅. Her friends were all being harrassed and stalked too though so yeah they're retarded for still going back 😂.
Tbh I agree I loved this movie obviously there are bad written parts but Octavia spencer made up for it. I completely agree with you

It's funny when the trailer for this comes out, it's followed by a my pillow commercial. I brought one to this movie. I see why. I give it 0 stars but 500 sheep jumping fences while humming hero by nickleback.
i have noticed recently that when a bunch of dumb obnoxious kids are in a horror movie that usually they dont have any depth or arc and are there just to die but after five minutes i dont care.
I agree completely about the trailers! I was so disappointed because so many scenes could have been better if they didn’t show them all in the trailers! Very sad but I had an enjoyable time watching and absolutely loved Octavia Spencer!!

Agreed with you completely. I knew exactly what was gonna happen when it happened. I really wanted this movie to be good. But.......it wasn't. Also this movie has 2 of my favorite actors. Octavia Spencer and Luke Evans. Its freaking bad when they can't save your movie.

This is a "horror" movie....and remember keep in mind the script doesn't have to make sense or be too real... It's just about a popcorn ride. That's it.

It's the type that should've been near as great as misery but idk after watching it. The ending also reminds me of the new Halloween. And for those who ask for a sequel, turn it into a Netflix series instead I think it would be told better this way

I disagree with some things. I actually really liked the movie BUT I didn't watch the trailer before and I didn't even know it was a horror movie bc I'm an idiot but I think that mistake actually made the movie 10 times better for me. It also made me super mad when they were being stupid but then again putting myself in they're shoes I don't know if I would call the police or not because of popularity and things. Im in middle school and people get beat up a lot for being snitches so idk. She probably didn't know that ma would go to the lengths she went to so it didn't seem like a big deal at the time. I can see both ways of thinking.

I wasn’t really expecting much from this movie after I saw the trailer but when I saw the movie I really enjoyed it. Octavia Spencer did an amazing job in this film but what brings the movie down is the characters. Some of the acting was ok but not that great. And the little twist where the wheel chair girl is MA’s daughter was kinda stupid in my opinion because I forgot about that character because she was only in one scene of the movie until close to the end. But other than those negatives I really enjoyed the movie and I would probably give it a 3/5 it was ok but not great
Thanks, Scruff McGruff for telling us that it was "ruff" to watch. The movie does look interesting when you watch the trailers for Ma but when you finally go see the movie, you left disappointed and that is not a good feeling.
What or who, (octavia spence)drew me to the movie. That i would love to see her in a completely different roll. Until every critic kept saying Otavia spencer was amazing but the movie...not so much. Then i started to think "how did they get her to do this blumhouse movie)?

owed a favor or felt obligated, because the director of ma also directed the help, for her oscar winning performance. Last option...blumhouse begged her to do it and started pushing that guilt button harrrrrrrd. She is the best part of this movie. After this, no more blumhouse productions for her...but she should do more dramatic and horror based roles. She is great as (almost) always and she must be the world's strongest woman...because she managed to carry 99.9% of this movie on her back. I don't know about you ,but this tiered me out...So goodnight every1. 💋💋💋💤💤💤
The one peeve I have with a lot of movies and TV right now is one mentioned here, and that is, we have this plethora of titles that have NO likable characters. They may too "cool", way badass, a goody twoshoes or just plain assholes but the one thing they're not is likable. I want to root for someone in a movie. Good or bad. I want to empathize with at least one character.
With Ma I kinda empathized with OSs character but in the back of my head, I knew I wasn't supposed to and in the end, the payoff wasn't worth it.
I think a lot of writers (and audiences) right now have an antihero fetish that's detrimental to fleshing out any truly good stories with characters who are well rounded and fully developed. I'm hoping the "fad" passes quickly.

Ok: so first off, the main draw to this movie is its trailer which when seen by any horror fan in particular will have them queuing to see this. Now, the premise to this movie set up brilliantly in the trailer is just extraordinary and the potential of OMG! what is this crazy Ma character capable of? - goes into overdrive again heavily fuelled by the trailer.
Now, theres no other way of saying this but this movie is an incoherent shambolic mess.The horror elements and the gore elements are just thrown in there for the hell of it without being plausible embroidered into the movie.
What motivates Ma to do what she does is a bit far fetched. Wot? She got pissed off just because of that? Really?
It would appear that the script was written over-night, I mean the writing & the way things are just willy-nilly thrown in there kind of beggars belief. Its like someone puts a whole load of ingredients into a liquidiser but the lid wasn`t placed on properly & then when the ONswitch gets turned on, the shit goes everywhere with us the viewers going WTF!
The writing & execution of this movie is such an incoherent mess, it beggars belief.I can`t believe that before its release, Octavia Spencer didn`t call an emergency meeting, thump her first on a boardroom table & demand re-shoots or someone to fix this movie because after-all, she is the face of Ma.
This movie is really an insult to remarkable exceptionally talented actress Octavia Spencer turning her into a cartoonish laughable charter having her do crazy bad-ass stuff just for the sake of cheap laughs.
As I said, the premise of what could`ve/should`ve been a edge of your seat nerve-jolting terrifying movie turns out to be horror for the sake of horror, gore for the sake of gore turning Octavia Spencer into a cartoonish character along the lines of the house-keeper in those Tom & Jerry cartoons And it screams the question How can this be? with supposed experienced talented writers who write movie scripts for a living in Hollywood.
There is also some plagiarism elements from other movies in there also, mainly Fatal Attraction where Diana Silvers returns home to find Octavia Spencer sitting down having tea with Juliette Lewis, identical to when Michael Douglas returns home to find Glenn Close having tea with his wife And three plagiarisms from Steven King Misery also where ornaments are moved, a police man calling to the door and a guy restrained on the bed.
Now, the character development in this movie is fantastic: this movie really takes its time and effort in developing those characters even the supporting cast And superb exceptionally credible performances also by everyone including the supporting bit part cast, and the chemistry between the high school kids is superb also.
Alison Janny delivers a hilarious bit part cameo. Luke Evans is bit part extremely credible But a standout has to be from Juliette Lewis. Back in the 90s Juliette Lewis was labelled a Shit for brains actress who only got movie parts because she took her tits out, I was completely and utterly gobsmacked at just how extraordinary amazing Juliette Lewis was in this movie; I mean My God, she totally went for it.
This movie is entertaining in a ludicrous comedy horror sort of way but its just extremely disappointing that its gonna end up being nothing more than a flash in the pan forgettable movie instead of a horror classic it potentially could`ve been if a bit more thought & effort had gone into it.

Overall it was pretty good to me. Perfect...no but thats why when I was watching Us I saw the trailer for Ma and thats why I skipped it. I try not to watch trailers certain movies.
