Psycho (1960) - Movie Review

- Beginning my Psycho review series, we arrive at Bates Motel for the first time. Psycho was a landmark and highly influential film that for all intents and purposes kickstarted what we now know as the slasher genre. Has Norman Bates' first descent into madness held up these past 60 years or has time left a few vacancies?

This movie is almost 60 years old and it's still better than the most recent horror movies out there. An absolute Masterpiece.
I agree
I think it’s timeless, even watching it now it’s still one of the greatest horror films regardless of era 😁
I agree! It’s a timeless and proven classic!! I love this movie
Exacto fue obra maestra.
It's kind of weird how I know
Psycho references from other horror movies than the actual movie. I came to this movie very late.
That intro was great😂
I like his wet hair in the intro. That intro kinda reminds me of that one Staind music video with the rain effect.
Reminds me of an episode of Bates Motel
Norman Bates definitely deserves to be be up there with Michael, Freddy, and Jason!!! Psycho's like the founding father of slashers
One thing that helps the ending is the final scene after the doctor describes Bates' personality disorder. The camera just slowly zooming in on Anthony Perkins while the "Mother" has this monologue about framing her son for all the murders she committed. Then her final line about how they'll all see that she "wouldn't even harm a fly", with Perkins giving this chilling smile before the scene dissolves to Marion's car being dragged out of the swamp behind the motel. One of the things I loved the most about that scene was that apparently some cinemas showed that scene with Mother's skull superimposed over Norman's face at the end, while others didn't, instilling this sense of "did I just see that?". Awesome film!
Alfredo Hitcock removed the bass frequencies during the "mother oh god, blood" scene to make Norman sound more like a teenager.
I always thought that instead of saying "Mother! Oh God, Mother! Blood! Blood!" Norman would have said "Mother! Oh God, Mother! What happened? What have you done?" that the moment would have played better; but I'm not the director - so it's not up to me.
Love the Marcellus Wallace audio drop
It’s funny that you drop this the day after Alfred Hitchcock’s birthday.
AWWW shit missed opportunity
I didn’t know it was Alfred Hitchcock’s Birthday today
@@CodyLeachYT the most missed opportunity of all fuckiing time
Norman Bates’s creator has been died and buried in green lawn cemetery for the past 40 years...
@@CodyLeachYT heh heh
I'm pumped for your thoughts on the sequels. Everyone loves Psycho II as a great follow-up(and so do I), but I've always had a special fondness for the Anthony Perkins-directed Psycho III. He used a lot of nonconventional theatre tricks to make that film pop visually and I love the juxtaposition between 60s Norman and 80s Duane.
Incredible acting performance from Anthony Perkins as 'Norman Bates'
Psycho (1960) is a Horror Masterpiece !!! Hitchcock was a Genius Storyteller..
The Birds is another great movie by Hitchcock
Just sed that even rear window was amazing film
I love "The Birds."
@@erika8214 On the best
oh and rear window
and rope
One of the things I love about this film after forty years of watching and re-watching is when Norman comes into the motel room and finds Marion. He gets the mop and bucket and starts the process, because he's done all this before. I just finished watching this again with a good friend who'd never seen it. He had seen the shower sequence and the ending but never the whole film. His idea of horror runs to the Universal monster classics. After we were done, he told me this is the one of the greatest films he's ever seen. Felt a bit of pride in that. Then I told him all about Ed Gein.
I got all 4. The first one on Blu Ray and other 3 on DVD I grew up on Norman Bates
The Birds, Rear Window, Rope, Vertigo, and Strangers on a Train are some of my other favorite Hitchcock films.
Add Shadow Of A Doubt, Dial M for Murder & To Catch A Thief, & I'm all in!
Yes, Norman deserves much more credit!!! I’m a big Psycho fan and really enjoyed this review! Excited for the saga!
Norman Bates wife died on the Sept 11, 2001 plane crash
@@Gmthekiller she died the real wife Berry Berenson on 9/11 she was on that plane
Been waiting for you to review this!
10/10 from me. My favorite Hitchcock film.
I love Psycho 2, I can't wait to see the rest of these reviews.
Part 2 was a great film. One thing you didn’t mention ... people were afraid to take showers after the film. I’m older and every door and window needed to be locked up tight to shower. To be that vulnerable.
I first saw Psycho back in 1986. Going in not knowing anything about this film & man I was left literally shivering from fear & Psycho remains to be the only horror film to ever do that to me & that’s why it’s still my all time favorite horror film. I didn’t take a shower with the shower curtain closed for 3 months cause I swear I felt like I was gonna be attacked. 😳
Fun Fact Alfred Hitchcock used Chocolate sauce for the blood in the shower. 😁
Great review Cody! Can’t wait for you to review the rest of the great horror series.
Fucking great!... especially the beginning. Can't wait for Psycho 2.
Damn, Cody! That intro was freaking awesome! As always great review and you are setting a standard for production values! 👏👍
Without the creation of psycho. We never would have got the 70's classic the texas chainsaw massacre.#MikeNice
Outstanding opening and that background is awesome! Great work as always, Cody!
For a film shot in black and white, Hitchcock makes great use of colors. Marion’s undergarments are white in the beginning of the movie to show that she’s pure/innocent. Before the shower, they’re black showing that she has sinned.
Fun fact: The original shower head used in the shower scene was stolen off the set.
Still a classic, done by the g.o.a.t of all time as far as directors go. Bout time to see YOU and THIS channel approach this legend and was beyond happy a "kill carnage" kinda film and enjoyed it and found joy and quality in this masterpiece. @Cody you continue to impress as just when I think I have you "pegged" you show depth or in some cases go far outside the box :) kudos to you Sir.
I’ve been waiting on this one for a while now, hands down my favorite film of all time
Brady7890 Great pick for favorite film!
Amazing intro. Fantastic review. Can't wait for the franchise reviews!!
Very nice review - we don't always agree, but this time I'd scarcely change a word of what you had to say. Good to see you looking at some older films/franchises (was also glad to see your review of Dressed to Kill), and I hope you find the time to do more of them. Have never had the nerve to watch any of the sequels out of fear they'd diminish my enjoyment of the original movie, but I might actually do so now as you've helped me discover some very good films over the years. Many thanks Sir, and may you long continue.
Psycho is a classic and I really like it! However, it is a little dated for me. But I freaking love the second one! I actually think it's better. Did everything the first one did right but took it up a notch.
Well, thanks so much for reviewing this amazing classic movie! It is a pleasure to meet you Cody, and I do really enjoy just watching you rank, and review these movies!
One of the best Hitchcock films. I love the movie. I saw a replica of the Bates house at Universal Studios Florida a while back.
Love the backdrop you're using for this video. Janet Leigh and Jamie Lee Curtis appeared together in Halloween: H20, and "Marion's" car can be glimpsed in the background of one scene. The Bates Motel TV series was a super cool updating of this franchise. And I don't suppose your merch. store has some stationery with Bates Motel printed on it, so I can make my friends back home envious ha ha!
Another great review. Can't wait to here your thoughts on Psycho 2. I feel its an unappreciated film over shadowed by the legendary status of the original.
I don’t know that I’ve ever agreed with you more on a review, even though I tend to agree with you quite a lot. Every problem you had with the film is the exact same things that irk me anytime I go back and watch it. & the positives are so good, they are why I come back over and over.
Please do psycho 2. It’s one of the most underrated sequels in my opinion 👍🏾
Indeed!
Psycho was one of my Dad's favorite Movies!!! Since he grew up the 60s. I am Sad That Universal Orlando has Removed the Dedication to Hitchcock. My Mom and Dad BOTH did Audience participation in that Attraction. Great Memories
That iconic house itself is terrifying. It's a perfect visual for a horror film. Great review dude 😀
If I had to stay in that house on my own I'd be creeped out.
Awesome intro!!!! The one thing that makes this so scary , even more scary than some others is this is something that can really happen !!!! Awesome review Cody!!!! Are you ready for Halloween season I am so excited
You should def watch Vertigo as your next Alfred H. film
The postman delivers another first class review of a Hitchcock masterclass, awesome intŕo Cody that was bloody impressive how you did that my friend you done Hitchcock proud.
Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates gives hands down on of the most chilling understated performances I've seen in horror there's something just slightly quirky with his character that makes him seem unnerving.
Janet Leigh gives a great performance of a person who has a moment of madness stealing money who's fate is sealed when she stays at the Bates Motel.
Great direction & editing, awesome music score & that last shot of Norman in the holding cell smiling still to this day gives me chills.
Can't wait to hear your opinions on the sequels.
I remember when he was at like 11k subs
Hey, Cody I like that intro shot in the rain where you turn around and give that grim smile.
I thought at the beginning you would take off the coat and reveal a dress and wig like bates does 😂. Great video, good choice. Would you ever do more Stephen king movies like misery or have did you do that one?
Amazing film and yes I absolutely love the ‘98 remake ! Joseph Stefan’s script is that good
For all those who are a fan of Psycho and think that it was the first slasher movies, you guys need to check out Peeping Tom (also from 1960). It's so much more brutal and SO ahead of it's time. It makes Psycho look like a comedy in comparison. Peeping Tom actually got banned for being so vicious.
Okay, be honest: did you know about this film before Scream 4? XD haha.
PT is nowhere near Psycho's caliber
@@shamrockballs1066 yeah, I got through a good chunk of it and wound up turning it off. Didn't find it nearly as interesting.
@@mrskinszszs peeping Tom is no we’re near as creative as psycho I agree
Before my time's
I only watched this for the first time a few years ago and even though I knew the shower scene and the discovery of the dead mother, I was so confused at Marion being the main character at the start because I knew she died. I also got confused at 'Mother' walking around the house when I knew she was dead. I didn't for a minute think Bates was mother too and I'm so glad that (somehow) wasn't spoiled for me! XD
It makes me wonder how audiences reacted to the "Norman is Mother" reveal way back in 1960.
Absolute shock!
Great review and background. 👏
Norman Bates definitely deserves to be remembered as a great Slasher icon
Yep totally agree
Will you cover the Bate's Motel A&E series sometime?
Any reviewer that is worth their salt (Cody damn well is) will include Bates Motel.
I wont have time to squeeze it in by October but I thought the show was awesome
Cody Leach Understandable man. I’ve thought about reviewing shows but they do take a lot of time considering how you and I go in depth on the film.
Welcome To The DARKSYDE
Especially if the show is 5 seasons long with 50 episodes altogether
Daimon Atkins Yeah I’ve wanted to review Bates Motel but TV shows longer than 3 seasons that I’ve already seen seem like a massive chore to review lol
8+8+5 =21
So theres 10 movies missing from 31 on 31 so far. Maybe Hills Have Eyes. Hopefully if it is they're including Mind Ripper. Also hopefully Sleepaway Camp, hopefully including IV The Survivor
Classic film and great review Cody great job man👍🤘
Hey Cory Yes Norman is definitely one the greatest horror icons ever. Glad to hear ur including the Psycho franchise in the 31 on 31 this year. I did a huge ranking with the Freddy, Michael and Jason movies and added Psycho, Chucky and Scream movies to it. That was a large list lol. Psycho 1 and 2 both made the top 5. Looking forward to ur thoughts on Psycho 2 because I’ve heard u mention how much u like that one.
Originally, Alfred Hitchcock didn't want the psychiatrist (exposition dump) at the end of the film (and in Hitchcock 1st cut of the film it wasn't included at all) it was only after the studio heads of Paramount viewed Hitch's 1st rough cut of the film that they felt an explanation scene was needed to explain everything to the audience. Hitchcock disagreed and tried to keep it out...but since the studio heads were bankrolling the distribution & advertising of the film, a reluctant agreement was made (just another case of studio heads under estimating the intelligence of even 1960s audiences)....factual information taken from several documentaries on Psycho & Alfred Hitchcock.... 😁
I think that it would be fair for Norman Bates to be mentioned in relation to the other horror icons just because his name is synonymous with the genre. The score, sheer scene and overall plot. Are among the most recognizable if not THE most recognizable.
Your reviews are among the best on YT. They are structured well, you’re up front and honest, you don’t dumb it down but you also don’t get too inside baseball with the technical stuff. Keep it coming for 2020. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Very good review yet again Cody, actually watched Psycho last night - Love your review series! From one of your fans all the way from South Africa - Keep it up!
That intro was fantastic 👍
Great intro Cody. Thanks for the excellent content u continue to put out. Just a suggestion Rope is a very interesting thriller by Hitchcock that is a must to see. In my opinion I enjoy Psycho 2 more than the first. Not that the first is bad I just think Psycho 2 is more intense n shocking. Again just my opinion. Lol
Rope is a great film but so underrated doesn't get talked much
Awesome video as always man and great review , this has probably been answered before but whats the song name or who did your intro song ? Its badass man . Thanks agin cody . \m/. Ps yes norman should be a horror icon with freddy , jason , micheal and so forth .
Best intro by far
We need another scream stream. ☺
Dont hold your breath man

One of a kind classic one of my favorite Hitchcock movies
Excellent! I was wondering when you were going to do this movie. Thank you my friend. 🤘 I could be wrong but something tells me you're going to put the Psycho remake for your bottom of the barrel pick lol.
Great job on that opening!
Ayeee one of my favorite movies of ALL TIME!!!!!!
Going to review the Bates Motel TV series too?
Personally, this is my favorite horror franchise and I'm happy to see it's still being appreciated! The one that really got me into it is Psycho 2. 😱🔪
Alfred Hitchcock is one of my all time favorite directors. Please check out Rear Window next. I have so many favorites but I think that one should be next followed by the Birds.
It's good to be able to watch these videos again; it's been 3 months, I'm now a United States Marine, and I'm ready to binge watch the hell out of these vidoes
Terrific review Cody!
Great opening to this review. I really enjoyed your review. I will admit the first time I watched psycho I was I think too young to appreciate it. But as I've got older it's become one of my favorite films it's a classic. I agree some stuff does not hold up too well. But like you said it's a movie from the 60s.
I watched this movie as a kid and it was my first horror movie. The end scene with NB at the end when his voice is in mother’s voice scared the hell out of me… I am a huge Hitchcock fan and don’t think they make movies like this anymore. My opinion is we don’t leave anything to the imagination any more… thanks for the review.
Great series to review. your back drop is perfect/beautiful.
I actually watched the '98 version of this first, when I was younger (because I didn't like the black and white,) told my mom it was stupid so she made Me watch the original. I thanked her after 😂 great review Cody! Your intro scared my youngest kid and he said you need to go to time out 🤣🤣🤣
I love the intro!!!! Great content, keep it up!!!
I adore it, but I also have to forgive some od the cheese. The story line is brilliant. The 98 remake was ASSSSSSSS.
That intro!!!!
That movie was actually iconic aswell because it was one of the first to have an unwed couple in bed together , in their underwear *gasp*
Apparently it was the first film to show a toilet onscreen too.
Xehanort10 not the first toilet I general but the first flushing toilet
I love Psycho. Thanks so much for covering it in this vid. you have a awesome channel
Very cool intro Cody. Excellent review.
I love Psycho. first saw it on tv when I was about 13 and instantly fell in love with it. I wish I could add more to what's already been said by everyone , but theres a good reason that people talk about the directing, performances, music, lighting etc. they really are that great. I totally agree with your negative points though. The exposition, although somewhat necessary was overkill and I don't find sam and lila near as engaging characters as marion. That said though, I will happily put this in my top 10 movies of all time
Great review man! Psycho was always a movie that I want to go back to 1960 and watch with an audience. Groundbreaking for horror!
YAS! One of my all time favorites! Psycho 1960 is my second favorite horror film of all time!
America Love it Or leave it Halloween 1978 lol
The first time i actually sat down and watched this film all the way through, i was surprised that it actually scared me at one moment and i can appreciate the story and the character of norman
Love the background for this review
Great review with an amazing intro!
I love Your Intros This is one Of Best Horror Movie's Ever Made The Performances The Story The Suspense Everything 10/10 ☆☆☆☆☆
If you're looking for more Hitchcock to dive into, start with either The Birds (his only other horror film) or Rear Window (his best thriller), and then check out North By Northwest (hugely entertaining thriller), Vertigo (most "art house" Hitchcock film and endlessly intriguing), Strangers on a Train, Dial M For Murder, and Rope (all fantastic thrillers centering on murder).
There are no negatives on this film in my opinion this is a masterpiece.
Wicked intro!
Love that intro man!
I agree about the exposition dump with the psychiatrist. In the book (that the movie was based on) this explanation was given as a conversation between Sam and Lila (Marion's sister) some time after the main story. And I think that worked a little better because it was more of a discussion rather than a monologue.
The Crossover I never knew I was waiting for!
I'm very happy that you reviewed this film. I have watched it a few times over the years, but all the Halloween references I was completely oblivious to. Lol. I feel dumb now. Great Work Cody!!!
This movie is a masterpiece. Just finished it today. Alfred Hitchcock is praised like he is for a reason. After mulling it over for a couple months, this and The Fly flip-flop as my favorite movies of all time.
Great review. I love Psycho. The Shining and Psycho are my top two favorite horror film's of all time.
Epic intro, man. 😂 Love how you’re mixing it up with some classics. I find it hard to watch stuff pre-1970 but this remains a great film. Dated...but in a good way. And yes, Norman Bates belongs up there with the classic slashers for sure.
Love the intro love back round love the review
Those dialogues in movies like Psycho and others back in the day were pretty corny and forced but that's how they made them in the past and don't get me wrong I'm agreeing with you Cody but I just give them a pass a little bit.
Well, the movie actually has some really quotable dialogue, too. How about that final monologue by “mother” before the movie ends?
Classic!! I’m surprised you reviewed this though 😁
Brilliant review mate. Your sharp observations and insight are a joy to hear for me (a lifelong fan of the Psycho films) and it's always a buzz for me to see others as blown away by it as I am. Like you, I havent seen all of Hitchcocks back catalogue... but if you are going to dig up some of his other films, I would INSIST you pick 'Frenzy'.
Anyway, nice work Bruvva and I'm off now to see your review of my favourite of the franchise....'Psycho II' ....Fuck, I love Meg Tilly!!!!
Loved that intro. 😀😀
I need to see this film.
