John Carpenter's Halloween (1978) - Movie Review

  • Evil has come to your little corner of RUclips. Kicking off my undertaking of the entire Halloween franchise, we start with the timeless classic...the one that started it all...the night he came home. John Carpenter's Halloween was a game changer for the horror genre and inadvertently kicked off the slasher craze of the 1980's. What about this original film, Halloween, makes it continuously stand above the pack in the franchise and the standard that all slashers are measured against?

The best part about the history of michael Myers is that John carpenter was inspired by a young boy he witnessed at a psych ward in his youth says the boy just stared at him with blank pale evil stare..

I think the closest thing Michael had to a motive in the original was to recreate Judith's murder as a twisted way to celebrate 15 years since he'd committed it.

To be completely honest, Donald Pleasence was utterly brilliant in this film. Utterly magnificent. Every time I see this performance, I remind myself that any bozo could have played Michael. Pleasence had to build quite a lot of the character and plot developments with his dialogue. The man doesn’t get enough credit for this role (and I write that knowing he gets acclaimed for this role from fans of horror)

    • @theflyingguillotine3788

I think every MM film after 4 proved that any bozo playing MM means nothing does not ring true with me. Nick (and all the others) that played Michael in the Original did OUTSTANDING jobs. Dick Warlock did a fantastic job in H2-1981, and George did a truly fine job with a horrible mask in H4. after that......every person except for James j Cortney just were not good Shape actors. this is MPO, so oh well, but I'm sorry, having guys playing bad versions of Michael really hurt those films to me.

  • @ShotgunSandwichENT
    @ShotgunSandwichENT 5 лет назад +29

Yes, it was unique the way Carpenter portrayed things.
    He split up the ‘Hero’.
Traditional films combine the Protagonist (the character that drives the story forward) and the Main Character (the character we experience the film through) to create the ‘Hero’. But Carpenter separated them.
Loomis is the Protagonist. He’s taking action, tracking down Michael, warning everyone, etc. He has a dramatic objective that is urgent.
Laurie, as the Main Character, has no goal or dramatic objective. She’s just subject to the horrifying situation and we experience it all through her eyes.
This is a very unconventional method for telling a story, but it works perfectly here. ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ did it very well beforehand.
    Great review!

The struggle between Michael and Annie is the focal point of the scene, not the gore. Most movies would cut straight to the throat slit after the jump scare, but Carpenter holding the shot to capture the struggle without any accompanying music is what makes the scene work

What's genius about the mask is it fits Loomis's description of Michael's face under it. Michael for all intents and purposes is wearing a mask of his own face. Michael and Freddy are 2 different kinds of evil. Freddy loves every minute of what he does but Michael is cold, emotionless and uncaring about his actions.

I really think it was that simplicity that IS the genius of the original Halloween. No $10 million budget, NO convoluted, crazy ass back story OR all these little unrelated subplots used as filler. Just Carpenter's vision, a group of friends with talent & some excellent camera work. Sometimes that's all you need to make an iconic movie. Carpenter & Romero will always be 2 of my faves in the horror world!
I still get chills when Jamie Lee Curtis delivers the line "Was That The Boogeyman?"

On the special features of the DVD I have of Halloween there was a part on a behind the scenes documentary, in the scene where Loomis shoots Michael and he flips over out the window and falls, Donald Pleasence asked John Carpenter "how do you want me to react when I see Michael is gone? Shocked or more like I was afraid I was going to see him gone?". To which John Carpenter replied "play it like you were afraid you were going to see him gone". It was the right choice.

What I find very interesting is that Michael Myers as a character exhibited behaviors that actual serial killers do - the stalking, strangling their victims with their hands, staging of the bodies. This was all depicted in the film. Very interesting.

I agree with Cody completely here, I have seen other reviewers talk about how slow this film is and I have to say that is one of the things i love about it. Acting (especially from Pleasance) is great and hammy too...WHICH IS ALSO FUCKING GREAT! Dean Cundey cinematography is superb, music is the best in the slasher genre, puts Carpenter in Bernard Herrman's category of creepy yet beautiful themes. The hype is real , this film is great. All things came together whether by luck or talent....more so talent.

With everything of this original halloween, it is the film that brought me to horror as a kid, to me it feels like a modern day frankenstein story(minus the monster building). The idea of a veteran kinda character who knows this evil and is trying to stop it while that evil attacks new victims out of non existant motives. It feels like a slasher/monster movie to me at points. It doesnt subtract anything from the film it enhances it to my opinion. I love it

Seeing Halloween ‘78 on the big screen this Wednesday, I’m super stoked! Halloween’s by far my absolute favorite in the series and possibly my favorite horror/slasher film of all time. Not only is a beautifully crafted film on nearly every technical aspect, John Carpenter’s Halloween is also a great deconstruction of the concept of evil, the supernatural - Michael Myers is the living embodiment of the darkest parts of our subconscious minds; perhaps that’s why we, as an audience, fear him - we fear the evil within ourselves, as we are all capable of waiting for that silent alarm to trigger us off.
    Great analysis, Cody!

The original is my 2nd least favorite Halloween movie. 4/10. I just think all of the sequels did everything much better.

27 Murders? Jesus Christ! Also your laugh in the intro reminded of Sam Neill's character in "In The Mouth Of Madness" 😂😂.
I love the intro and your review, can't wait to see the Halloween 3 review!! (Most Underrated Halloween film)

Did you know Michael's First head tilt is actually *NOT* when he kills Bob but when Annie is stuck in the laundry room. If you look very closely, you can see his reflection doing the tilt.

I remember, I was in the 2nd grade and my babysitter told me that if I watched Halloween all the way through Myers would come out of the TV and stab me. I was terrified for year's.

The Postman delivers the goods with yet another outstanding review, Cody love your reviews buddy, humoured & informative your the man.
First horror I ever seen on UK Tv on a Saturday night in 1982 when premiered, I was 7 yrs old & allowed to stay up & watch it, I was literally terrified & when it finished i was frozen with fear, there's something eerie about Michael Myers that unrelenting force of nature who stalks you from the shadows.
Jamie Lee Curtis became the legendary scream queen & Donald Pleasence stole the movie with that dramatic monologue to Sheriff Brackett about Michael.

The tameness of it now is definitely noticable but using 4 letter words in cinema was actually considered shocking back in the 70s. Also the teenage girls are dressed like grandmas, it looks so tame today yes. I do like this film though it showed how horror can be set in an ordinary suburban neighbourhood. You don't need big gothic mansions and castles.

I think the ending was perfect for what Halloween was supposed to be. A different movie about Halloween. Just like the end of Halloween 3, it was open ended. I still believe the Halloween franchise would have been much better if they had done what they intentionally wanted to do, and make it a different movie about the holiday.
