Hereditary is easily the most hyped horror film of 2018 so far not starring Michael Myers. A simple tale of a family uncovering literal and figurative demons in their lineage's past has taken the horror community by storm on both ends of the reception spectrum. With a movie that is easily the most divisive movie out right now, how do I fare with my thoughts on Hereditary?

I have to disagree with you on this one, which is totally fine, but the plot was there since the beginning. Everything is there. The movie is about a family being cursed. The movie is a pure nightmare.

@@Zach0087I’d agree it’s slow at times more of a horror/drama but the 3 or 4 scenes that are scary are horrific. The last 20 mins is top tier horror.

I can’t forget this movie. It’s so unusual. Never seen a horror movie unfold this way. It kept you guessing as to whether the people were going craxy or whether it was really supernatural.

Hereditary spoiled other horror movies, for me nothing else compares ... I'll be watching Ari Aster's work very closely from now on. This was as close to a perfect movie as I've ever seen in every aspect.

I've been a horror fan most of my life and can easily recount the handful of times a movie has legitimately frightened me. I'm more difficult to provoke because the ways in which I am scared by a film are very specific. I'm also super critical and analyze every film I watch in order to understand what they're all about. 'Hereditary' offered everything I could want from a horror film. I had to take a break after first viewing to calm my nerves, cause it gave me non-stop anxiety. It was easily one of the most intense experiences I've ever had at the theatre. And, five days later, I have yet to stop thinking about it. I've been piecing together all of the subtle and clever setup/foreshadowing that happens within the first half. Narratively, everything seemed straight-forward and easily understandable to me. Of course, I'm one of five people who actually loved the ambiguity of last year's 'It Comes At Night' and found the ending of that film very upsetting - so what do I know.

I'm a big horror fan, and this one disturbed the shit out of me. It's better on multiple viewings. Alot of the details in the film isn't spoon fed to the audience. I caught certain symbolism, and conversations most people would ignore that was all foreshadowing. Every moment was important, even scenes most would ignore. The more you study it, the more frightening it is. Definitely a film you gave to watch, with someone who catches details similar to you.

Great review, Cody!! Well, like I have said before on other videos here on RUclips, it is VERY difficult to scare audiences these days with films-I mean genuinely SCARE you. Everything that can terrify us has been done many times over. We, as a culture here in America have just seen SO MUCH in Horror Films, that we are practically numb. If we think that we can be scared EVER AGAIN by a movie-it’s not happening-those days are gone people. The only thing that’s left is for these Horror films to do in my opinion is: amp-up the quality of the acting, keep you engaged, great pacing, as much as POSSIBLE do something new, and give a satisfying ending. We not going to be scared anymore. Back in the day, people were scared because those Horror fims were completely new at that time and they were not use to seeing what was on the screen.
Anyhow, that’s my two-cents! 🤷🏽‍♀️ Two thumbs up for this video! 👍👍 Your skill, Cody, in how you review these films is priceless and totally under-rated. I enjoy every video you do! So glad I subscribed to this channel. 🤗🎥

    • @ratwithnoswag
      @ratwithnoswag 4 года назад +1

Ravenwind999 I’m going to have to disagree. It’s not that horror movies aren’t scared anymore, it’s that the youth gets exposed to horror in other things than movies far earlier than when they watch their first horror film. If they were to see a good horror movie before any of that, they would be scared shitless. It’s not the industry’s fault, it’s the media’s. However, do not confuse that as me saying that all new horror is original. A lot of it is overused burnt out topics, but casual viewers won’t care because they wouldn’t have seen any of the real haunted house classics like the exorcist and the amityville horror. Lastly, as Cody said in the video, what scares people is totally subjective. You just can’t make a claim saying that no audience will ever be scared by a horror film again. In my opinion that’s bullshit, this movie freaked the fuck out of me and I’m a decently seasoned horror fan.

  • @wittysass3812
    @wittysass3812 Год назад +4

I think the main reason it didn't land for you is the expectation of what you imagine the 'most scary horror film' to be and having those expectations not be met. Of course if you think Insidious is scary by comparison that already explains alot.
What makes it so horrific is mostly situational, but then add on the cinematography, editing, score, and phenomenal acting and it becomes a master class in dread as your unease builds. Like the mom discovering her daughters headless body the next day but the camera remains fixed on the son from the moment of decapitation until the next morning, disturbing is putting it lightly.

I am incredibly late to this party. I will be real...this movie disturbed me and that is NOT easy to do. I have never watched a possession film and walked away disturbed. I can't say that anymore. This movie stuck with me and kept me tense. From the first small scene where we see Mom in the corner and I was like...oh its gonna be like this? Okay, lets see what you've got Hereditary. I loved it. I think it was the quiet way it got you. It felt more real than it did Hollywood and you don't get that anymore. Definitely a MUST see for horror fans. I went in knowing NOTHING about it other than it was the possession film.

OK, so I literally just saw this movie a few weeks ago because the trailer turned me completely off when it came out. I also stayed off the "Scariest Movie Ever" because I've heard it so many times over the years, only to be disappointed. There's not a whole lot that scares me these days but HOLY...SHIT...I actually couldn't sleep for a few nights after I watched it because I kept freaking picturing Toni Collette "Spidermanning" across my bedroom ceiling! Lol
Yes, it's a slow burn but I thought the way that it unfolds felt like it moved at a decent pace. It was only roughly 30 minutes into it when you see one of the more shocking scenes, which kinda surprised me. I thought the ending was pretty damn creepy BUT I wish they had done something different with the old people cult situation in the closing scene. It felt a bit cheesy & cartoon-ish, almost like they had already spent so much time, effort & money on the rest of the movie & just felt like wrapping it up, so they slapped together the cult gathering scenario & tacked it onto the movie.

    • @reed3272

Great review, Cody! 👍🏼 You & I definitely have the same taste, I purposefully waited until you reviewed this one until I went to see it. I figured it wouldn’t live up to the “scariest movie of 2018” hype but I’m still intrigued since I live for psychological horror/stuff that sticks with you for awhile after.

Thank you Cody. I agree with this review. It was a good movie, it had suspense and some creepy scenes and great performances but I went into it thinking it was a horror film and I didn’t feel it was. I appreciate the connection you made to It Comes At Night, I went into that one thinking it was horror and it wasn’t. It was a good movie and I enjoyed it but I think the marketing really did them an injustice. For those that find it scary, that’s fine, for me I did not find it scary. I feel the performances are making people overrate the movie instead of the movie being able to hold itself up on its own.

Amazing movie, loved every moment. I thought it was cool that it's disguised like a drama. In my opinion it made it way more effective, gave it a certain authenticity. Overall, it's a well researched film, and a lot of details packed into it. Terrifying (not in a typical way it digs deep) especially when you re-watch it, and understand certain things the general audience would dismiss as irrelevant. So much things dealing with rituals, and the occult done very accurately. This one lingered with me.

    Spoilers:
When peter drives to the Party the Leave the Camera on the Exact pole
Before Annie does her first sayonce. One of the Cult members puts a pamphlet about sayonces
Joanie Emphasizes that Peter needs to be there for the sayonce.
Annie Talks about how her brother was schizophrenic and said his mother tried to put stuff in him but he killed himself before which is exactly what happens to peter.
Also Annie didn’t let her GMA near peter but let her near Charlie and charlie said GMA wanted her to be a boy. Also Charlie had Paimon in her as she was a carrier until they could get to peter.
Joanie had the same floor mat Annies Mom made.
At the beginning of the party you see them making the cake and one girl is Dicing peanuts.
Annies mom left a Note saying she was sorry for what shes done/doing and that it will all be for a good cause
The light you see is Paimon

I had no issue with the pacing and went into it expecting it NOT to be that scary, as I can't recall the last time I actually found a movie to be scary, and I could feel the pure dread seeping through me like I hadn't felt since I was a kid by the last half hour. However, I felt the final scene just sort of derailed what had come before. It felt like such a hard left that it straight-up stopped being scary for me.

I went into Hereditary knowing nothing. I came out of Hereditary dragging 600 lbs of palpable terror and dread. I spent WEEKS jumping at shadows (both night and daytime) and sleeping with every light on in the house.
I'm 44, and my track record for horror movies is not lacking, but I have never experienced a movie that produced such anxiety and dread and fear as Hereditary. Really, I don't understand why. I just know how it affects me. Great movie. Seen it once. Won't ever see it again....If this makes me a pussy to the ones who weren't affected by this film, I only have one thing to say - "Meow"

  • @munchies24

I saw this in theaters with my girlfriend, and neither of us liked it because we felt that movie had no real focus and the writers tried to do way too much! If it stayed as a psychological thriller then it would have been great. The meandering slowly gave the focus to the breakdown of the family due to a poor woman losing her aloof and controlling mother and her daughter who she barely felt was hers at all, and that worked for me. That part of the story made sense, was coherent, and I was immersed. It seemed like she was going insane and slowly but surely, so was the rest of the family, and we were watching it unfold... until we were reminded about her grandmother and the ever so popular trend of DEMONIC POSSESSION MOVIES THAT WE HAVE SEEN 10 ZILLION OF! Towards the end the pacing became unbearable as everything was just kinda crammed in, and the ending was so shock value, jump scare-ish, and abrupt I didn't know how to feel. It isn't an awful movie and the acting is great, but the writers just needed to make up their minds for what kind of movie they were trying to make. At the end I didn't find it the least bit scary or even coherent. I think the hype is built around today's audience not being given a proper popular paranormal horror movie.

although i like fast-paced movies, i really, really enjoyed this movie. i find it very well crafted and is engaging (and i don't really like possession/haunting movies in general, didn't like "the conjuring", "sinister" and all those mainstream flicks).
i totally agree on the aspect that you should avoid trailers and would even go so far to say that it is best to avoid any kind of hype. hype involuntarily builds expectation and i don't really consider many of the popular horror aspects or tropes as scary at all. so, to get engulfed by opinions of people who probably feel very different about specific horror aspects than i do, proofed to be not a good idea for me.
i really like your channel. it is somehow comforting for me to be able to watch any of your videos and get just your honest opinion. it is just a true (opposed to "false" in this case) experience every time and that is just very special and dear to me.

Just watched the movie and I 100% agree with you. It was so oddly paced and meandering that when shocking things did happen it doesn't land as hard. I wasn't scared at any point which is odd because the visuals are as frightening, as can be, but again due to the lack of tension the pacing questions I had, they didn't land.
That said, Toni Collette deserved every award. I feel this movie would have been a better character study of paranoia and insanity rather than the whole devil thing in which I had a ton of unanswered questions.

This movie was not "scary" or a "drama", although there is a lot of drama.
    This movie was purely *disturbing*
There was a scene on first viewing I thought that the person calling out was trying to help, initially.
One night I was sitting in my kitchen just going over the movie in my head until I realized that the person was not trying to reach out to help.
She was trying to force him to die.

Wait... Alex Wolf? I thought it was Nat Wolf. Is that a brother, or something? Nat Wolf is a great actor, in a lot of great films, but I had no idea there was an Alex.

I just found your channel and appreciate what your saying. I am a HUGE horror fanatic. Been one since I was a kid and times have changed. With that being said, your right about the fact that they have over done the supernatural genre. We have so many others that can be done but haven't even been touched. Hopefully that will changed!
Now on to Hereditary! I personally loved this move. Than again I like the slow burn and I also have some knowledge in demonology. Soooo, when I realized it was Paimon they were summoning I was like on Snap! I loved your review and subscribed. I look forward to your future reviews.

I really loved this film. It reminded me of The Shining more than anything else in terms of the acting, atmosphere and tone. It made me feel edgy and uncomfortable more than terrified. The only movie to really scare me over the last 10 years was 2008s Martyrs. That film stays with you forever lol.

How the fuck are you going to compare this movie to like other possession/demon/haunted house movies movies around its time? Those movies aren't even the caliber to this movie( writing, acting, cinematography, etc).

Honestly, I hated the slow burn of this movie on my first watch. My wife fell asleep both times I tried to watch it with her. I found that the scene at the end where the mom was up on the wall in the corner of her son's bedroom in the shadows was very creepy and how for like 2 minutes she was always just somewhere lurking in the darkness was very well done. The more times I've seen it just to try and understand it more, I've grown to actually somewhat like it. My biggest negative is that, while I've learned enough to understand the plot much better, I hate the fact that there was never a motive explained about WHY this cult was doing what they were doing. Like... WHY do they want to bring back this Paimon demon? What benefit would that have for ANYBODY? Perhaps the people of this cult gain some supernatural abilities through doing this or SOMETHING. But, that aspect is never even close to explained. So, we get an entire movie where this cult is making all of these horrifying things happen to resurrect this demon because... reasons. I'd really have appreciated a motive behind it. And lastly, I absolutely agree with you about the son devolving into a small child in those scenes. Hearing him sobbing uncontrollably and blubbering "Mommy... Mommy why are you doing this?! I'm sorry mommy! Mommy, please stop!" was so unrealistic that it takes me out of those scenes. He was still acting his ass off in those scenes and MAYBE they'd have been more believable if he was a bit younger, but that's just not how any teenager his age would ever act. Especially a male. But, I have grown to appreciate the movie a little more over time with a few more views.

My opinion on this movie is that it's confusing. You're watching it and 20 minutes later, the story goes to a different direction you weren't expecting, and it does it in not in a good way. For instance, one time the child is the protagonist, then the mother and later the teenager guy?

Really liked your review. Like you, I didn't watch any trailers and went in blind. I'm a huge horror fan and have seen countless horror flicks and tv shows. Sci-fi/fantasy and horror is my genre! I did hear the hype and fell for it as usual. And just like you said, I left disappointed. I mean this movie is supposedly this generation's Exorcist?!? LOL! Okay! A24 is hit or miss with me. I didn't like The Witch or Hereditary, but loved It Comes At Night. I must say that I would put this movie in the occult/cult subsection of horror, not demon possession or haunted house. The grandma was part of a coven, which was obvious from the start. I spent most of the movie waiting for the coven/cult to do whatever it set out to do, but there was a lot of family drama in the middle that took away from the horror part of the movie. I'm really curious about your questions. I feel like the coven in the PA movies made more sense than this one.

this isnt just a demon possesion movie. it deals more with the occult and their manipulations bringing a demon into play for their own needs.

I’ve watched a lot of horror movies, and I agree, it’s not very scary, bar two or so scenes that I did not see coming. The musical score made me uneasy, and the acting was good insofar as what they had to work with. In saying that, the pacing is too slow, it had me checking my watch a few times waiting for the plot to pick up, and I thought the overall story was weak and nonsensical. I realised precisely how nonsensical and silly it was when I explained the plot to a friend. I wouldn’t call it a classic, but it’s definitely different.

I think its overrated. The trailer was misleading too. My friend walked out bcuz it bothered him plus a critic said it was The Exorcist of our time, which is my favorite so I better se something good. I think it took elements of Conjuring Insidious & Triangle if you seen Triangle u may know what I mean.

I hated this movie. Creepy vibe? Yes. Great acting? Yes. My issue is I didn't care for any of the characters. They all had bad habits I was hoping they'd all die. I was intrigued by the sister but after what happened to her I cashed out. I understand people liking it, but people who put it as top horror movie of all time, I don't get it. I put this with it follows, and the babadook. Over hyped boring movie with unlikable characters.

I really enjoyed this movie, people should definetly see it, but I had to watch it 3 times before I figured out what is was that kept it from being great. Plot holes. Giant gaping plot holes that you can drive a mack truck through. You don't pick up on them because the acting and tone is so good, but the plot holes are BAD.

this movie is supposed to scare you in other ways. not insidious style jumpscares. it’s supposed to mess with family. there’s stuff in here everyone in any family has to deal with but nobody talks about. it’s supposed to make you uncomfortable not jump. the demon plot is in the last part of the film because that’s not really what it’s about. By the time the characters themselves uncover that plot it’s too late, it already has them. it’s from the perspective of a realistic family that subverts their issues until they “boil over” (and then your family is fucked because the demon has already sunk it’s nails in) there are clues throughout the movie if you actually just pay attention instead of getting upset there’s no dude in a rubber darth maul suit to cut the tension for you. this movie is tension.
