I just saw this movie with a friend, and I have to agree with Doug when he said he felt it started as "a great movie and then it becomes a good horror film." The first half actually brought tears to my eyes, dragging up how my family dealt with conflicts and a lot of the mental and emotional pain that took place because of it. The fights, though about a much different topic, just brought up so many memories of fights that I have both witnessed and took part in with my parents and siblings. It was honestly the first time a movie made me feel something so strongly that I was fighting to hold back tears since the first time I watched Old Yeller when I was about five or six...
And then the second part happened which, though not bad and well filmed, just didn't have the same impact. Everything was just so well acted and interesting to watch (though slow). And then that ending... I'm not going to spoil it, but I went from holding back tears and almost walking out of the theater crying to "Spidermom, Spidermom does whatever a Spidermom does~" so yeah... That ending... I thought I was going to finish the movie feeling perfectly heavy in the heart and deeply impacted, but my friend and I left laughing (along with the two people in front of us) about Spidermom.
I'm not saying that the movie was bad. In fact I felt that, over all, it was a good movie. I personally wouldn't watch it again because of exactly how close to home certain scenes hit, but that just (to me) shows how well acted everything was, how well written and filmed it was. I actually recommend it to others. Just go in there expecting to feel, as Doug said, very disturbed.

No, I do not find what happens to a certain character in this film sexual. After seeing the film, it makes you realize how brilliant the trailers have been with misdirection because you think you know how the 3 act structure will go but you have no idea. Outside of that HUGE spoiler for keen eyed folks in the first trailer, they give nothing away.

I loved Hereditary but some people fail to understand that horror is subjective. It results in them just bashing a film and telling others not to see it and that's not fair at all. Shit, I know a lot of people that find Silent Hill 2 scarier than Dead Space but I feel the complete opposite and I absolutely love both. If you don't find something scary then cool. Just don't spread false shit like "It's not scary. It sucks. Terrible movie." because then you completely disregard the sound design, cinematography and great acting.

I had a couple girls in front of me who were literally giggling through the whole thing. Not the nervous laughter like I was doing (quietly), but actual straight up giggles. Like fuck man, quit ruining my atmosphere.
Other than that, this movie was terrifying. This is the first time I’ve felt legit SCARED by a movie. I thought the character development and the relationships in the first half were very much needed in order to appreciate the scares in the second half. Yes, there’s gore and people will obviously be scared by that, but that fades quickly if that’s the only reason why you’re scared. It would get old after a while if you didn’t have the story behind it. It was so well acted too. The lady that played the main girl was so convincing and just absolutely brilliant. Like Tamara said in her review, it just sticks with you. I personally didn’t really like how they just told you everything at the end, it was kind of thrown at you and I was a little confused until after I got out and thought about it. Now it makes sense, but at the time, I didn’t really get it.
This movie is fucked up in so many ways, but that’s what I love about it. I like when movies make me feel something. The ending could’ve been done better, but it’s still such a great horror film. It left me reeling by the end, I needed to actually sit through the credits before I felt like I could get up, and even then, I was still a little jumpy. I loved that the sounds went in different speakers relevant to where they were coming from in the movie. That made me second guess every single sound I heard as I was leaving and the theater attendants were coming in to clean up.
It’s so unsettling to start and just turns into straight up horror by the end, and it’s done so well. Fucking loved it.

  • @Saimeren

The connections between the two halves of the movie are actually quite prevalent, but subtle. The mark on the telephone pole, the deer in the road, the people smiling at their "friend" at the funeral. The whole family dynamic, and everything put into motion are being manipulated by the effects of the ending.
Hard to explain without giving it away, but I think you know what I mean.
She eats the cake because of suggestions by her "friend", he also acts to have her open the window to get some air. Ect..

Gerald’s Game? Evil Dead remake? Sinister? The Innkeepers? The Crazies remake? The camera work reminded me a lot of The Shining and how it allowed the images to breath and let you actually see whats going. The best parts for me were the silent moments with nail biting tension. The scariest part for me was actually near the beginning when you see the outline of the Grandma in the darkness that sent shivers down my spine. I didn't care as much for the ending but it is a good film much better then most horror movies nowaday, it definately makes you think and sticks with you. I'm in the same mind with you about watching it again I didn't think I wanted to but maybe I will give it another viewing just to see the peices being put together more clearly in the first half.

Whenever I look at a video of Doug's now all I hear is, "What's so bald about this bald is that bald is really bald and bald bald bald and does a good bald being bald and it bald me bald because bald is just so bald and the bald thing about this is I really bald a lot and overall this bald is a really good bald. So that's about it, bald."

The movie sounds interesting but I really don't care for gore (although I love horror)...so as soon as the word "gore" was mentioned I became unsure if I should see it in the cinema. At least at home, I can fast forward through the gore. "Disturbing and uncomfortable" does sound like great horror, though.

I'll tell you, I LOVED this movie so much. I was late to watch it but I absoluely loved it. First and second half of the movie.
There are two movies out there that has scared me. Hereditary and The Exorcism Of Emily Rose. And I have seen just about everything ;)

So glad you did a review. I was skeptical about seeing this movie based on how let down I've been lately with many of the horror movies released. Now I'm excited about watching this movie, long over due.

Agreed. Every time a horror movie gets hype, it always lets me down. I hope this is the movie to at least match some of the hype that’s being built.

From the reviews, I think Collette could definitely win the Oscar but only if Meryl Streep doesn't come out with a movie about a woman struggling to come to terms with a yeast infection a couple of months before the ceremony.

I really loved the beginning / middle of this movie, I somewhat liked the building of the final act but honestly some of the last few scenes almost felt like they ruined the movie for me, it was starting to answer a bunch of questions but then some of the last scenes start bringing up so many more questions and new factors that i remember at a point almost at the close where after having so many questions start piling up in my head I just remember thinking "you know what, i dont care anymore." The film is certainly amazing, first half had me completely sucked in and uncomfortable while fascinated, and this issue only showed up at the very end.

It was alright. There were a couple of shots and moments that did creep me out, but it didn't scare me throughout. But it also felt a bit jumbled in how everything was building and how everything connects. Yes, I did like one or two things about it, but overall, it was okay, yet nothing truly grabbed me.

I was with my mom, we were the only ones in the theatre and I was hoping for gore but my god not as much as there was. The first shock had me shaking and I think you know what I'm referring to. I walked out feeling confused but once I understood it I liked it a bit more it was just more disturbing than scary.

I've watched several reviews and your's is the one I can relate too (opinion wise) I liked the movie so much before the ending. I didn't know how to explain it, but yes.. it was a great experience and it turned into just a traditional good horror film.
I read or watched a SPOILER review (STOP READING IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GET KIND OF SPOILED) that explained how it starts with the close up to the doll house and the father comes in. According to the person who reviewed it, that meant that the beginning of the movie was the father's point of view of the situation (he is trying to rationalize what's happening). That's why we feel is just a family dealing with grief and mental illness. The end gets this supernatural turn when he is not there anymore. We start seeing things as they really are.

  • @gabuks1
