  • Netflix brings us their newest horror thriller Bird Box. Sandra Bullock leads a post-apocalyptic journey of what it means to be alive. Is it enough to simply survive or is there more to life? While Bird Box asks these questions, supernatural creatures cause mass suicide and hysteria, survivors have to keep their vision impaired to navigate and survive their new world.

    The thing is that Bird box was based on a book that came out in 2014, whereas A quiet place was a completely original film, so if anything a quiet place copied Bird box

    With the naming thing - I think the point is that Sandra Bullock’s character never named the children because she couldn’t allow herself to do it as she had to focus on survival. Naming the children might lull her into a false sense of domesticity, which might endanger them all. So by sticking to the bare necessity (Boy/Girl), she could focus on helping everyone survive. And when they finally reach a safe place, she allows herself to be sentimental and to name them.

    • @WesternXC
      @WesternXC 5 лет назад +3

      Also, she never wanted children in the first place.

      I think all three of you are right but I also thought she didn't name them so she wouldnt get too emotionally attached because they might die and it would be harder to live down...or some shit

      @Move_I_Got_This Damn straight it's borderline sociopathic.
      Movies these days love to portray motherhood at best as an inconvenience and bump on the road for otherwise strong independent women to work around if not outright neglect if they couldn't abort...

  • @Fitzcarraldo92
    @Fitzcarraldo92 5 лет назад +6

    My interpretation of Sandra's character not naming the children was that the "entities" would use their name to torment them I.E. they call out to Malory throughout the entire film by name. They ever called to the children.

      Kris G at the end of the day whatever I like and whatever you like is just an opinion . Opinions don’t matter , but numbers don’t lie . The ratings (by both audiences and critics alike ) are higher for a quite place . It made more money with a lower budget . Number don’t lie . Also , I’m sure the book was amazing but the movie doesn’t do it justice .

    • @richardgerlach515
      @richardgerlach515 5 лет назад

      Anthony dominguez we can argue about movies all day long. I just get tired of people calling this A Quiet Place rip off since it’s based on source material that came out before A Quiet Place entered production. I feel bad for another author named Tim Lebbon who wrote a novel called The Silence, that got filmed into a movie last year. That novel has a VERY similar premise to A Quiet Place, even though the movie is a Canadian production that was filmed before any news about A Quiet Place, it’s gonna be called a rip off. This was Tim Lebbon’s first movie adaptation, and it’s gonna be called a rip off.

    I still don't get why some people are hating on this movie. It's not a ripoff of 'A Quiet Place', despite the similar premise. It's way better than The Happening (love what you said about that movie Cody, that the best way to approach that movie). I enjoyed the movie just as much as you did Cody. It's a nice post-apocalyptic that hold it owns with excellent acting from Sandra Bullock!
    May you and your family have a safe and Happy New Year Cody!

    A buddy at work told me I should watch Bird Box. I asked him why and he said because it's exactly like the Happening but if it had been made by a competent filmmaker and didn't suck. I watched Bird Box and.. yup. That's it. It's a parallel universe version of the Happening in which it was made into a really good movie. I loved it. I really liked the fact that you never saw the monster or found out why it happened.

    I didn't see Bird Box but A Quiet Place is EASLY one of the best family horror movies i EVER saw! Don't remember the last time when i cared so much about some characters and the idea of beeing unable to make a sound would drive me crazy in max 3 days! Might not be the scariest horror movie but giving birth to a child with a creature in the same house with you? Now that's tension! I have waited for Venom, Slender Man, Halloween, but A Quiet Place made me so invested that i jumped at every noise and literally holded my breath MYSELF! I didn't have any expectations but was VERY surprised!

    You missed the point she never named the kids because she didn't want to fall in love with them, her forcing herself to never name the kids is her way to cope if they ever die. Also its her way to tell herself she doesn't care about them even though she clearly does. The same thing happens to mothers that have miscarriages when they leave the babies room all set up even though they know the baby isn't coming home its just there way to cope. I think it was very well done.

    I also loved the movie, think it was a great suspense watch, I just wish they explained a little more about the entity, how they work, the followers etc. I'm fine with a mystery and not knowing everything, but also we have speculations about the entity that's it., Oh and one scene that i found was unbelievable is where she tells ( the girl) you don't try and save me you just go. and I'm like you do realize she is 5 years old in an unknown location and blindfolded, there is not much she can do alone. I Do get mother instinct in keeping them alive but still.

    Cool review, I just watched Bird Box by recommendation from a co worker. Not a bad movie but a lot of things made me as irritated as the GPS scene, you mention.
    The one guy who has the keys to the grocery store not only ends up at the house where they are, he still has his work vest on?? Really?? Okay. Maybe he can go back to the store since he made it to the house fine. Wear a blindfold, walk there and push a shopping cart back.
    The first scene of the movie is Mallory teaching the children the rules of the game. Under no circumstances, remove your blindfolds. They are five years old at this point in the story. How did they make it that far without knowing what's up? You would think that by the time they could walk and talk, they would know that they can't go outside and they have to keep their blindfolds on, but, five years later, she finally explains how this works. Okay.
    The scene where Tom kisses Mallory and they have sex...what? Five years later? It really plays out like that was the first time they shared a tender moment. Maybe I wasn't paying attention.
    The scene where John Malkovich wants to stay at the store and live there...why did he go back to the house with them?? They make the scene about how Mallory isn't an asshole so, she wants to go back to help everyone. That's great leave him at the store!
    Anyway, I think that rant was long enough.
    Oh, wait...my other issue with it....HOW DID ALL THE BLIND PEOPLE GET TO THAT SCHOOL??? Obviously they were there before the phenomenon happens at the beginning but did they have to take a boat ride down the river to get there?? How did that doctor get there? Why is she even there?? Oh, because she was someone from the beginning of the movie.

      I'd like to add some more things that I hated about Bird Box. How about that car accident scene, near the begging? Car flips over and lands upside down. Mallory not only climbs out without a scratch on her, she gets knocked over and lands on her stomach. Okay, I could see how the baby would be fine. Makes total sense.
      Can someone explain why those two women went into labor at the exact same moment? I didn't get that. What was that about?

The book it is based on is 262 pages and it feels like they were trying to cram the book into those 2 hours. Some things just felt underdeveloped and rushed. That being said, the performances are really good and I would watch a sequel if they decided to make one. Enjoyed your review!

    I have this movie 21st out of 33 movies that I watched this year so far. I generally love this movie. I wasn't bored with movie. The reason why not high on my list is because the back of fourth of the past and present day. If you just did it in chronological order. It will be a damn good movie. 2nd reason is because I didn't like when Machine Gun Kelly and that girl dipped out. 3rd reason is the kids was named boy and girl. 4th and final reason is the ending.

      TheBadassNinja the kids name being boy and girl is realistic, it’s a survival thing and their names change at the end. The ending was a bit shit though.

      the ending was bad when they got to the safe place, but leading up to getting there was amazing and exciting, also I love the names for them it’s just so funny

    I really liked this. It wasn’t perfect (like you said, some logic issues) but it was really engaging and fun to watch, which I think was achieved in part by the non-chronology. In my opinion much better and more believable than a quiet place

    It was ok. I thought all the parts in the five years before we’re good, but that part in the forest right before the end was just an awkward mess.

    I really enjoyed Bird Box. But this type of movie doesn't have the rewatch factor for me. Same goes for The Quiet Place. Bird Box had a pretty good supporting cast.Even though its bullshit i did like the scene with the proximity sensors going crazy it was so simple but had maximum effect for me. Also the scene with the crazy guy that had the drawing and started to kill everyone and make them see the monsters that was Gold! The next netflix movie I'm gonna watch is Mowgli Legend of the Jungle.

    Given the basic premise, comparisons to A Quiet Place is inevitable. However persons saying it is a rip-off of A Quiet Place need to check facts, Bird Box is based on the book of the same name that came out in 2014. If there is any finger pointing it actually can be toward A Quiet Place borrowing from Bird Box and just tweaking the details.

    Wait.. If they can attempt to put stuff over the windows where's the person who has a car with a highly tinted car? They can't wear sunglasses or high tech tinted eyewear or nothing like Oculus or something? I mean it is 2018 even in a apocalyptic world you'd have intelligent tech people who'd know how to rig, fix or create a virtual headset that would allow you to both see and survive.

    I personally think bird box is a better film than The Quiet Place. However The Quiet Place is a better Horror film. Bird Box has a better meaning and an actual goal. It tells the story of a women that can't connect. Its more than just a horror film. The Quiet Place is just a horror film. It does have sad gloomy moods - However Bird Box does it way better than The Quiet Place. The Quiet Place has a few good minutes of fear. Until the monster is shown. That's when fear of the unknown leaves. The Bird Box keeps that fear the whole time. However that doesn't mean its scarier.
    The name of the movie clearly shows that this isn't just a horror movie. The Quiet Place is a name made to strengthen the fear factor. While Bird Box was a name made to symbolize something. Whether you perceive it as Freedom, Love, Self Improvement, etc it has a meaning. The Quiet Place has no meaning. It was simply made to scare. The Film doesn't have a meaning like Bird Box does. Even with The Quiet Place being an undoubtedly better horror film I personally think the monster in Bird Box is way more scarier than The Quiet Place could ever dream of being. Due to the way they use fear of the unknown. Therefor, Bird Box is undoubtedly the superior film.
    Monster Explanation: Likely the entity will take out the greatest fear someone has. However it is different for some people. "They come as you Greatest Fear, Sadness, Or Loss". For most, it will be as scary as the sketches one of the characters reveal. However, Sadness and Loss is likely for special kind of people. Our main character almost saw her greatest loss - Tom. Before Tom, she would have seen her greatest sadness. Or she would have turned to one of the beauties. Lydia - the women who tried to save the main character saw her greatest loss - Her mother. Fear will cause suicide by force, Sadness will cause suicide by will, and loss will cause suicide by convincing or leading.
